The Feathers Hotel, Ludlow

The amount of effort that has gone into all these eerily similar reviews (including the ones for all the other pubs in the fake profiles) is quite astounding! I'm genuinely impressed...

Mawson Arms/ Fox and Hounds, Chiswick

Dear Fullers,

It is inexcusable to provide a friendly pub such as this as your brewery tap and supply it with such a substandard range of low quality beer. During a previous visit five years ago almost the entire Fullers range was available on draught along with a well stocked fridge containing all the rest. The beer was excellent.

On my last visit there were four badly kept ales on. My Chiswick bitter was little more than dirty water. No wonder that the largest group of drinkers in the pub were all drinking lager.

In 2015, with a London beer revolution showing no signs of slowing down, such complacency is disgraceful.

The George and Devonshire, Chiswick

Can only echo catbert's comments below, a smart looking pub BUT on a friday night only two out of six pumps available (Pride and a rugby themed seasonal ) and everyone drinking lager. This pub is spitting distance from the brewery, for f**ks sake!

21 Feb 2015 12:03

The Hawley Arms, Camden

I remember that before the fire bouncers would make punters queue behind a velvet rope, such was the draw of this God awful pub to the desperate chancers of Camden. It is still a tragic experience.

Expensive. Crap service. Crap beer. Tiresome 'craft' lager. Full of those who missed the boat 10 years ago. Amazingly busy...

11 Nov 2014 13:04

The Harp, Covent Garden

Have all the old staff gone? On our last visit the service was friendly but so slow...
Beer seemed fine and pub still full of luvvies.

FULLER'S----- DON'T F*** THIS PLACE UP!

7 Nov 2014 13:30

Holborn Whippet, Camden

I wanted to like this pub, but I won't be rushing back. The two pints we had tasted wrong, and it was cold and uncomfortable with sticky tables (what ever happened to beermats?). I especially disliked the coffee shop style floor-to-ceiling glass walls. I don't go to the pub to stare out of the window, and who wants to see me getting pissed as they trudge home?

The beer range was very good and the barman was really nice.

21 Sep 2014 20:14

The Rose and Crown, Southwark

What happened to this pub? My advice is don't bother.

14 Aug 2014 12:55

The Coach and Horses, Soho

Sad. And the bar staff are boring euro-drones.

14 Aug 2014 12:45

The Wenlock Arms, Hoxton

I'm sorry to say that I am in two minds about The Wenlock. The pub has changed hands and been re-furbed, so there's no point in me moaning about how it isn't like the good old days because it is now a different business altogether. But is it worth bothering?

It is clean (although I didn't mind the previous grot). It has lot's of beer. The staff are occasionally very odd. I have been in here when it is quiet and on busy Saturday nights. It is a BORING pub.

The Old Fountain is better, and you can visit both easily enough.

3 Feb 2014 14:20

The Pembury Tavern, Hackney

Even though this pub looks like it was put together by a committee, you should try one here if you are in the area. The beer is ok, the bar staff really friendly, and it's close to the Cock Tavern so you can easily escape when the silly decor and punters start to get on your nerves.

2 Feb 2014 15:30

The Artillery Arms, Old Street

Still a very nice looking little pub etc.

On our last visit all the beer we had was brown dishwater with no taste or condition. Even the keg cider was flat! I've come to expect this from most Fullers pubs around the country and I think their beer is best from the bottle. Problem is any bottles sold in their pubs are 330ml and stupidly expensive.

Also the toilets smelled. To be honest I was glad when we left.

30 Nov 2013 15:45

The Kings Arms, Waterloo

The prices in here make it hard to enjoy your beer, and to rub salt in the wound last visit we were well overcharged by a stroppy barmaid (something I've suspected has been happening to others for a while). A nice pub to visit but be careful.

14 Oct 2013 14:36

The Cock Tavern, Hackney

We came in here to escape the abysmal London Fields beer festival and had a pretty good time. There are no worries about choice, maybe 12 cask and 8 keg beers with 5 ciders. Everything we tried was top notch.

Service was standard East London, either swift and attentive or slow and stroppy. The enthusiasm of young gifted brewers isn't always shared by the bored looking hipsters they rope in to actually serve the stuff.

Walking in the pub is like going back in time to the 50's and is just the right side of grotty. Prices are as expected. A funny bunch of locals...friendly enough, but pretentious.

5 May 2013 15:19

The Cross Keys, Covent Garden

When the missus visits Covent Garden for shopping, we always pop into this pub. Great Brodies beers plus a couple of guests, and I've never had a bad pint. Staff are great. Will get busy after 5pm with a real mix of people, so try to get in for about 4pm if you fancy a session. If you get a table and there is a good range of beer on, this pub beats The Harp (!!!!)

30 Jan 2013 14:43

Euston Tap, Euston

For beer range this pub is in the top 3 in London. When it comes to comfort the building leaves a lot to be desired, and the service is a little slow (but not unfriendly). I feel a bit sorry for the staff because the bar layout means that they are always in the middle on show. Upstairs is a pain in the arse! Still we always enjoy a visit and it's highly recommended.

29 Jan 2013 15:27

The Artillery Arms, Old Street

Very nice little pub with the usual Fullers range.

Went to the 'beer festival' recently, only two beers on(!) with the promise of more to come "when the others are finished". Ho-Hum...

8 Oct 2012 20:20

The Kings Arms, Waterloo

This is the best pub in the Waterloo area. The Wellington up the road soaks up all the randoms, while The White Hart takes all the young posers. Maybe 4 or 5 ales; usually Ringwood, Darkstar and Truemans. I've never had a bad pint and the service is very good.

The pub has two small bars that can fill up quickly after work, and at the back is a larger restaurant area serving Thai food (after 6pm?) which is very popular. They don't mind you drinking in there as long as you move for diners.

If the trains go tits-up I would head here for a couple. The Rose And Crown around the corner is ok but all Shepherds Neame.

25 Jul 2012 12:19

The Lock Tavern, Camden

If you are forced into drinking on the main drag in Camden or going to a gig at the Roundhouse this is a good place to go, but it still makes all the usual mistakes typical of this area. Downstairs always seems clogged up with grumpy North London loudmouths perched at the bar making it a pain in the arse to get served, and the main seating area is all big couches; it's amazing how much space they take up compared to how few people they can seat.

Walk through the pub into the beer garden and things get much better, and upstairs is another bar and terrace with a DJ. They serve food but I wouldn't bother. The barstaff are friendly but slow.

Beer! Maybe one ale on, otherwise Meantime Pale Ale or usual 'premium' lagers etc. Rubbishly expensive, especially since they admitted that they put the prices up at weekends ("standard thing in London"!?!).

11 Jun 2012 13:39

The Shelley Arms, Broadbridge Heath

WOW! Landlord very busy at his computer this morning. How do you find the time to run a pub?

3 Apr 2012 13:41

The Wenlock Arms, Hoxton

Still recovering from our little good-bye(?) drink. Thanks to everyone for yesterday, and good luck with whatever happens next...

1 Apr 2012 21:31

BrewDog, Shoreditch

This was much better than I was expecting. The pub is pure Shoreditch inside, everything is a bit grey with lots of exposed concrete and brickwork with 1980's secondary school tables and chairs (not as bad as it sounds!). There is a cellar bar(?) but that was roped off.

Good news and bad news about the beer. There is a great selection of keg, bottle and cask, but as with everything in this part of London it is too expensive. There is a good drinks menu, whilst on draught there were 3 craft keg black I.P.A.'s, 4 ales and maybe 5 other guests plus bottles from here and Europe. Hophead was the session beer at 3.60, but then it all goes up to 4-8 a pint. Not a great suprise, but until I start earning loads more or drink on expenses it's a ball-ache.

All the beer that we tried was excellant and the mega-hipster staff were very nice. Lots of natural light from the glass frontage, which also gives you a great view of yet more grey millionaire's flats. Worth a visit.

28 Mar 2012 14:08

Ye Old Mitre, Holborn

Previous review based on a visit Thursday 9th February. It was too cold to drink outside. No need to get grumpy if someone has the audacity to criticise your favourite pub!

8 Mar 2012 13:55

Ye Old Mitre, Holborn

On our last visit both the upstairs and snug room were "reserved" for bored looking business men. Result? Both sides of the bar unpleasently packed. Very anti-social. Who cares how good the beer is when you spend the evening in a scrum looking at the back of a strangers head?

Talking about the beer, I don't get all this guff about the booze and food. The pies are not good; either from the cash-and-carry or Tesco. The beer is fine, but only as good as dozens of other Fuller's pubs. The Basket Makers Arms in Brighton manages to do it all much better only without an attention seeking Landlord shouting all night.

Grumble Grumble! Anyway, if you are a casual drinker I recommend going early in the day and forget the evening. Also the bar staff are always very good.

2 Mar 2012 14:28

The Amersham Arms, New Cross

I've been here three times (although never at the weekend), each time going in expecting a grumpy hipster nightmare but ending up having a decent night. Inside it's a pretty standard scruffy London live music bar; badly lit with low couches and dirty tables. Booze-wise there is the usual keg crap with a few bottles and two ales around the side. The beer seems to lack condition but is drinkable. The girls serving looked about 15 but were on the ball and friendly enough.

At the back is a room the same size as the main bar, perfect for music or whatever. If you find this place too pretentious wander down the road towards Deptford and pop in The Little Crown for some old-school-rank-pub action!

13 Feb 2012 12:35

The Jolly Gardeners, Vauxhall

This is quite an odd bar, but if you drink during their happy-hour it's worth going to for a couple if you are in the area. We paid 3 per pint until 6pm and then prices went above 4.

With it's pretentious alternative title of 'Zeitgeist@ The Jolly Gardeners', and hilariously high perching couches, it has the feel of a tw*ts bar from The City. The barmaids were friendly and offered us tasters. We tried two beers I've never heard of which were fine, but I'm not sure they sell anything really exciting. I'm no expert on German beer but they serve Kaltenberg Hell (brewed in Blackburn by Thwaites), and Lowenbrau which is cheap in Sainsbury's. The locals were a mix of Germans watching football on the big screen and grumpy office boys.

8 Dec 2011 12:10

The Prince Albert, Camden

Good looking gastro-pub sited a safe distance from the main drag. The sterile atmosphere was made up for by extra friendly service, and there were two good ales on alongside fancy lager and mulled cider. However, this pub is so arse-achingly expensive that I could never recommend casual drinkers to visit. I'm no tightwad, but I resent paying over 4 for a pint of beer.

Also I wouldn't bother trying to strike up any conversation with the 'locals'. There were a few couples picking at their meals like forensic food critics, and a tragic middle aged man in designer knitwear playing a game on his phone.

15 Nov 2011 14:20

The Pride of Spitalfields, Shoreditch

Sorry to hear about the cellarman. I visited recently and the beer, especially the Brewers Gold, was excellant.

9 Nov 2011 19:07

The Craft Beer Co, City of London

Erm...anyone else getting a bit of deja vu here?

This place is the sister pub of the CASK in Pimlico. When the CASK opened we had the same one hit wonders praising it to the skys and long waffling arguements about price vs quality. All we need now is MR MULTIPLE ALIASES (copyright Quinno 01/07/09 @The Jerusalem Tavern) to crawl out of Ye Olde Mitre and get the pub deleted. Not again please...

The pub itself is an essential visit for beer tourists. The style and range is comparable to some of the great bars in Belgium and Holland, but without the charm and atmosphere. It is overpriced, but judging by the money being spent by the city boys whilst we were in there the owners needn't worry. It's rather sterile (no sitting at the bar, reserved tables upstairs etc.) but the gents behind the bar were friendly and very enthusiastic.

22 Aug 2011 15:16

Project Orange, Battersea

It's hard to see how anyone could rate this bar highly, unless they were an easily impressed twenty-something with deep pockets. It is a bit different with lots of bottled beer, and when we went the bloke behind the bar was a good natured loon. But it's f***ing expensive with no atmosphere. It looks like the sort of crap 'Rock Pub' you find in any European city, where Klaus and Pedro can compare tatoos to a Sports Metal soundtrack. There are some funny pictures painted on the wall and overall it looks a bit like an Amsterdam Coffee shop, but it doesn't really work.

13 Jul 2011 14:24

The White Hart, Bishopsgate

Busy but dull pub with a high percentage of geezers and city boys. Rather good beer selection, maybe six ales(?). We had Camden Green which was cracking. Barman very helpful. Not a pub where you would spend a whole evening but good for a quicky.

21 Jun 2011 11:08

The Pride of Spitalfields, Shoreditch

I've been here twice recently and the beer quality has gone down. ESB had no condition or much taste. Brewers Gold was dull. Locals still a good laugh, and the pub still looks like it's stuck in an early 1980's time warp. Please sort out the beer!

20 Jun 2011 22:24

The Angel, Soho

Nice pub! Everywhere else nearby looked crap, and a quick look in the door re-assuringly revealed the standard Sam Smith's selection, so we knew what to expect (nothing life changing but you can always find something you like). As previously said the interior has loads of character and it was good to see the dart board being used. The local drinkers were the right side of eccentric, and the woman behind the bar was very friendly.

20 Jun 2011 22:12

The Old Dispensary, Whitechapel

This pub has plenty going for it and is worth going to if you're in the area. If you like traditional 'lived in' local's pubs you may be put off. It's very smart looking and business like with a definate 80's bar/bistro feel. But don't panic! There are between two and four ales on; in the past I've had Nethergate, Dark Star, Itchen and Sharps which were generally well kept. There is food (looks ok) and free nibbles for drinkers (weekends only maybe?).

A quick word about the staff. The girls behind the bar are very friendly and actually smile! Staying positive while dealing with the public is hard and the manager of this pub should be proud of them.

15 May 2011 12:05

The Falcon, Clapham Junction

In common with other reviewers of this pub, my visit was to kill time waiting for a train. I had been here years ago and it was crap, but whatever your views on Nicholson's pubs this place is alright. 14 ales! (the only one I wouldn't touch was Marstons Pedigree) and basic pub grub. I tried a good Scottish lager-beer and Thornbridge Jaipur, which was outstanding. The lady who was serving was helpful and friendly. As previously said this is an unusually good station boozer.

28 Apr 2011 22:59

The Southampton Arms, Gospel Oak

Another visit, another great session! I stayed off the cider this time but got an Italian friend hooked on the apple. Food just right and beer very fine. Enemies of pissy keg lager should try the Camden Brewery bespoke version.

28 Apr 2011 22:44

The Pineapple, Kentish Town

Very pleasent pub in a quiet sidestreet. You walk in and are presented with the locals at the bar with their backs to you. This isn't a good first impression but the rest of the pub is a pleasure. It hasn't got the range of beer that the nearby Southampton Arms offers, but during the recent cold weather I re-discovered the joy of a comfy seat in a warm pub with a good pint of Bass (I'm getting old!). There were four or five ales on and I get the impression the staff are proud of the beer they serve. Talking of the staff, I can see why previous reviewers might be critical of them. They are rather vague young hipsters and a bit slow, but very friendly. Round the back there is a large room where Thai food is served BUT this feels totally seperate and doesn't create that frustrating pub-trying-to-be-restaurant-and-forgetting-it's-a-pub atmosphere.

20 Feb 2011 18:28

The Lord Stanley, Camden

Glum gastro-pub in a nice side street off Camden Road. Decent size single room with a large U-shaped bar dominating the centre. Beer at one end and a chef's hob and oven at the other. This illustrates the problem with this place; it falls between two stools. It doesn't want to be a pub and is too grotty to be a restaurant. Who would want to spend 18(!) on a rib-eye steak that you could pick up in the butchers for a fiver, while sat down surrounded by people stood up and sinking half a dozen after work? No-one was drinking the Adnams so we chose Guinness, which was mediocre. I was temted to ask for a pint of gravy, which I hear is AWESOME!!! Just to clarify my last posting...jimmywikks can turn down the humourless indignation. My comments were sardonic and a little cynical, certainly not spiteful. Read the previous posting I refer to. Look at all that hyperbole, all the explanation marks, then relax and have a laugh! Any regular user of this site will come accross such blatant self promotion quite regularly, and making fun of them is one of the best parts of being a reviewer!

5 Feb 2011 16:37

The Bull and Gate, Kentish Town

I came here a few years ago for a gig and remember having a good time and enjoying a decent pint of beer (Shepherds Neame?). A recent visit was miserable. The old brass behind the bar got both orders we made wrong and argued that she was right. The till was set up to input a final total only, so the prices were always different as she added the rounds up in her head. The pint of Camden Bitter I tried was poured from two pumps from around the far left of the bar; not sure why and i'm not sure if I got a mixture of Camden and London Pride. The bitter was pretty poor, but the following pint of Pride was rank and I actually spat out the first sip. It was cold and dank inside with a group of old Guiness sipping locals huddled around the TV at the right of the bar watching 'Deal Or No Deal'. Arse!

3 Feb 2011 14:47

The Lord Stanley, Camden

NEW COMPETITION---FIND THE MOST OBVIOUS AND DESPERATE FAKE REVIEW BY A LANDLORD OR MANAGER PROMOTING THEIR BUSINESS. EXTRA MARKS AWARDED FOR THE MOST RIDICULOUS STATEMENT. I start with the review below, along with "The gravy was AWESOME!!!!"

20 Jan 2011 20:17

Ice Wharf, Camden

Poshest 'Spoons ever! Admittedly we went midweek BUT...No scrotey sicknotes coughing up Old Holborn at the door. Soft lighting and discreet music. Loads of pretty metrosexual couples chatting over their microwaved synthi-burgers. AND (rubs hands over face in disbelief) served me a good pint of ale at the right temperature in a clean glass! I can appreciate the previous reviews, but every 'Spoons has slow service because of staff being distracted by making tea and coffee. And doesn't every bar in Camden Lock hire bouncers from A-hole recruitment? Try the hovel Whetherspoons in Paignton to experience true awfulness.

20 Jan 2011 11:32

The William IV, Leyton

Probably one of the friendliest pubs i've been to in a long time. Not sure if they had the full range of beers on but there was more than enough to keep us happy, especially at 1.99 a pint! We came by tube to Leyton and it's a bit of a trek up the not-too-picturesque High Road; jump on a no.69(?)which drops off very close. It's worth the trip to drink good beer in such a characterful pub.

10 Nov 2010 15:51

The Macbeth, Hoxton

Maybe the ultimate trendy Hoxton pub. Garish clunky interior with a small stage at the end presenting a gig/happening that sounded like a lawn mower being revved. Packed with "Hoxton creatives"(previously known as "Nathan Barleys") draining the trust fund and taking it all very seriously. Only a fool would expect cask ales and a dart board; a bottle of Budvar was the safest bet. Upstairs there is a small smoking area/terrace. Fifteen years ago I would have loved this place...

14 Oct 2010 15:03

The Queens Head, St Pancras

A good looking pub in a crap part of town. I had Meantime pale ale which was fine but it was mostly lager on tap (I saw some foreign beer in the fridge). The young gents who are running the place seem to have high hopes of music, comedy etc. I wonder how many first time(?) landlords have tried and failed to make their perfect local...

27 Sep 2010 22:45

Ye Old Mitre, Holborn

This pub is alright and I have been here maybe half a dozen times. Why does it generate such bullsh*t reviews? Is it the work of a dedicated team or one sociapath with multiple aliases? The person(s) behind WaterlooWillie (account now suspended or deleted) or any of the other delerious postings from the last couple of years have done nothing to enhance the image of this pub.

24 Aug 2010 13:44

The Spread Eagle, Camden

Good beer in Camden....tricky! I like Youngs beers and four out of the five we tasted were fine. This means that beer-wise the place stands head and shoulders above 99% of the local competition. Dunno what it was like in the good old days but I agree it is a bit dull inside.

31 Jul 2010 13:47

The Southampton Arms, Gospel Oak

Exceptional. Eight ales, seven or eight real ciders, and two Meantime lagers served in proper glasses by friendly and enthusiastic staff. The (many) drinks I tried were varied and well kept. Everything about the pub worked; the homemade bar snacks and the record player seemed to compliment the relaxed atmosphere and not hinder it. The locals were a friendly mix of young professionals and more mature types. The pub itself is a pleasent suprise, I was expecting a pokey little place but it was big enough for a busy Friday night and has a cosy courtyard at the back. A brilliant pub.

31 Jul 2010 13:19

The Green Man, Fitzrovia

A pleasent enough pub with a decent range of booze and some outrageously priced bottled cider. There were two ales on when we arrived; an undrinkable Adnams stout (clip promptly turned) and a very good Pure Ubu (went off next pint). Went onto Addlestones Cloudy which was fine. Beer later came back on, the Doombar was o.k. The place got very busy by 7pm and a noisy dj set started, effectively ending any conversation. Is there a need for this while people have their first drink after work and catch up with friends? And who the hell would fork out 4.25 for a 330ml bottle of Thatchers Gold?!? Staff were polite, and drinking outside isn't too bad as it's a pretty quiet street.

15 May 2010 18:23

The Clarendon, Pimlico

A spell binding experience! The previous entry just doesn't do this establishment justice! I quaffed my premium lager with a lump in my throat and a tear in my eye...

27 Apr 2010 13:14

The Windsor Castle, Kensington

Almost a brilliant pub. Inside is very cute and welcoming, but getting anywhere to sit can be tricky if you don't get in early (especially if you are in a group). The last time we were there we were moved from a reserved table for three women who stood at the bar for most of the time. I don't eat in pubs very often (they can be very unreliable and expensive) and I guess I will never warm to the idea of reserving tables in a pub. Rather anti-social, I think. Ho-hum. Last visit we had Adnams IPA, Landlord and 2 a pint Adnams wheatbeer; all fantastic and the barmaid was very friendly.

4 Feb 2010 18:39

Ye Old Mitre, Holborn

Warm and welcoming pub with friendly staff. I'm not sure it's the best pub in the land, though. Some of the previous reviews could be excellent parodies of pub nutters (and not just chavman!). Worth going to if you're in the area.

4 Feb 2010 16:41

The Cross Keys, Covent Garden

I think this is a good pub. I tried two pints of Brodies and a Black Sheep- all very nice. It's a bit gloomy inside (fine by me!), and worth going to if you're in the area.

4 Feb 2010 16:06

The Bell House, Camden

Cheers Quinno! I finally had a good pint in Camden. This is a wicked pub; quite a picturesque old building overlooking the canal path, and the garden looks like it could be cool in the summer as well. Inside was big and warm, with a cellar bar/venue containing a few old blokes playing Bert Jansch and chatting (this is a good thing). Beer-wise...NOT ALL WRONGBOW'N'LAGER!!! A good pint of Broadside and Deuchers! Guest beer was on the turn, but having the choice is what's important. Locals and staff were chatty, and the pub dogs were cute.

11 Nov 2009 02:30

The Good Mixer, Camden

I had a few pre-gig drinks in here the other day and saw a few old faces, and some new ones. Still only lager (the London Pride is flat and muddy). Along with the indie kids and Camden types there were quite a few (friendly) non drinkers using this place as a hang out; walking in and out with no purpose endlessly chatting about nothing. It reminded me of a kebab place on the Holloway Road where the locals never really go any further than a few streets away from home. So boring! And there was a kind of bouncer/big old bloke (best before 1981) mooching outside. So many odd people...

19 Oct 2009 13:45

The Harp, Covent Garden

I'm sure this place has had enough glowing reviews in the past, but if you are reading about this pub for the first time I can tell you it is great.

22 Sep 2009 13:23

The Royal Oak, Borough

Very nice pub with a friendly atmosphere that also looks the part. Tried Harveys Pale, Mild, Blonde, Best and Copperwheat; all of them fine and well kept. My dinner was simple and well done.

25 Jul 2009 12:30

The Pride of Spitalfields, Shoreditch

I'm glad this pub is where it is -compare it to the overpriced w**kers bars further up Brick lane. The beer isn't always the best, but it's not bad and the place is friendly. Most of the punters (a mix of arty professionals and eastend survivors) were outside last time we visited, and it was a relaxed atmosphere. A proper pub in a lively area.

4 Jul 2009 11:48

The Old Fountain, Old Street

Had my first drink in here on my way to the Wenlock. Another pleasant suprise; six ales (I think), and the two I tried were fine. Quite roomy inside with a small but decent beer garden. Locals were pretty middle class with the odd shoreditch type managing to behave themselves. To be honest it was rather boring, but I will be back...

4 Jul 2009 11:28

The Wenlock Arms, Hoxton

Been here a few times now and this pub never disappoints. The sheer range of ale available is totally unexpected. The locals always seem a friendly bunch; a mix of working class natives and a steady stream of beer tourists. Ladies behind the bar a good laugh, beer well kept. An essential place to go if you like traditional boozers.

4 Jul 2009 11:02

The Punch Tavern, Fleet Street

Went in here once. Once. It felt like drinking in the entrance hall of a provincial museum. This place was recommended by CAMRA ?!?

4 May 2009 16:48

The Harp, Covent Garden

Always rammed! Good beer and a good mix of people. It's a bit pokey (although there is space upstairs), but this gives it a friendly atmosphere. Staff were good. This pub is a 'must do' in this part of London.

4 May 2009 16:41

The White Horse, Parsons Green

Quite superb range of British ale, continental booze and bottled beer; there are always a few I want to try. Staff really cool and it seems they are encouraged to know about what they serve. Lots of space and seating, shame so many hedgefunders seem to want to clog up the bar and guffaw into their Czech lager. Food is good (for a pub). Locals are...a privileged bunch (a polite way of saying public school t*ssers), but drink and let drink I say.

4 May 2009 16:24

The Old Blue Last, Shoreditch

This isn't a pub, just an extension of the Vice magazine lifestyle. Owned by Vice. Everyone wearing American Apparel (Vice clothing chain), wanting to be witness to a scene that's dictated to them. Go there for the free gigs and to people-watch.

23 Mar 2009 17:15

Mawson Arms/ Fox and Hounds, Chiswick

You come here to try the Fullers range, not for the view. Feels like a pub on a traffic island! The beer was almost to easy to drink and the irish couple in charge were very friendly, as were the locals (all drinking carling. WHY!?!) . ESB and porter obvious highlights, but all was good. Closes at 8pm.

23 Mar 2009 16:39

The Wenlock Arms, Hoxton

Very good old boozer. Exceptional range of ale, with a samuel smith lager, a cider and a perry (i think). Half the drinkers were ale buffs, the locals seemed happy with carling extra cold or something. Friendly enough; only one gurgling drunk stumbling around. I must go again.

23 Mar 2009 16:25

The Star Tavern, Belgravia

Very well presented and welcoming pub, if a little dull. Fullers beer was as good as it gets. Locals were predictable mix of tubby foreigners in armani and veteran city men laughing and wheezing at old jokes. A classic of it's type.

The Grenadier, Belgravia

Tricky to find. As previously said it should be a perfect little boozer, but it isn't. Pint of landlord rather dull, guest ale ok. Has a 'no photography' rule to placate some French diplomat who drinks there, and Frank Lampard has a half every now and then (so i was told). Actually, looking back that could have been a 'no fun' rule.

The Nags Head, Belgravia

Worth going to if you are in the area. We went late sunday so probably had an unusual time in the pub. Beer very basic; Adnams(okay), plus carlesberg(aaargh!) and "a german lager". Landlord had personality, a rare thing these days. He described the sky sports pub up the road as "Pretty good if you like watching television. And chips." Bar maid nice and genuine. Lots of old pub clutter and cute downstairs bar. Locals were american trillionaires (probably), shame about the smell of bleach while we were there.

Duke Of Wellington, Belgravia

Dependable pub now run by younger gent who was a local. I liked the old irish landlord, but little has changed. Service good, Shepherds Neame beer excellently kept and a good pint of orangeboom lager. Locals have a distinct whiff of public school and the ladies are pretty sloaney, but what can you expect from this area of London! The walk to the pub reveals where the money is in this country...

The Jerusalem Tavern, Clerkenwell

Brilliant little pub and fantastic range of beer. Favourite was the cream stout, but all worth a try. The pub is a little pokey and suffers when the city boys invade. After 4pm prepare to be barged around by yobs in suits.

Quinn's, Camden

A random pub, been here half dozen times mostly for a few late drinks. Will the beer on tap be well kept, or taste mouldy? Will the old lady actually let you buy a bottle of belgian beer, or make a lame excuse not to? Will the old lady's son actually serve you the drink you request, or argue with you? Will he interupt your chat with a mate to lecture you about something? Some things are certain; the pub will be grotty, and later on full of locals shouting at each other.

The Good Mixer, Camden

Not the pub it used to be. Only a few years ago you could be sure of a good night of cheap and nasty FUN. Now has too many hostel deadbeats sat around watching the world go by. Don't bother with the ale (there is no good beer in this part of Camden). Locals and wandering drinkers keep the character level up in the evening, and there's always someone ridiculous/tragic knocking around. Fantastic jukebox and staff are a good laugh.

The Ashburnham Arms, Greenwich

Been here a couple of times. Relaxed and friendly atmosphere, well kept beer and tucked away in a very quiet (and posh) street. Had a very good Shepherds Neame stout as guest beer. Recomended.

The Greenwich Union, Greenwich

Visited here several times over the 18 months. Always impressed by the beer; Helles and London Stout maybe the pick of the bunch. There ARE plenty of those rich young couples with expensively dressed kids on sunday afternoon, but also no trouble or snide old locals. Staff seemed friendly, and if you get the seats you want the place is a pleasure to drink in.
