The Ship Hotel, Maryport

Visited The Ship at Allonby during our annual visit to the picturesque Solway Coast. Spent several evenings sat on the benches outside the pub watching the stunning sunsets. Alongside the usual Yates Bitter (3.7%) was Solway Gold (4.4%) - both of which were excellent. Brilliant pub in a lovely location.

Royal Oak, Braithwaite

Called into The Royal Oak last week. Not been in for a couple of years and was glad to see it hasn't changed a bit, which was great news. Had a pint of Jennings Bitter which was excellent. The pub is comfortable and cosy and well worth a visit if you are in the area.

18 Aug 2015 20:55

Swinside Inn, Keswick

The Swinside Inn is a traditional 17th century Lakeland inn. The beer garden has wonderful views across the Newlands Valley. I tried a pint of Swinside 10 in 10 Brew which was superb, especially after the walk I had just done! Hope to call again soon.

18 Aug 2015 20:44

The Bounty Inn, Maryport

As of August 2015 - The Bounty Inn is being converted into shops and flats. Another community local lost.

15 Aug 2015 20:57

The Oakwood, Glossop

Called in the Oakwood last night, the first chance since the pub was given a full on makeover. The beers from Robinsons are still on good form, especially the double Hop. However, the pub has gone for the trendy wine bar look - with slate tiles and textured wallpaper. It was rammed so must be doing something right!

29 Mar 2015 21:30

The Commercial Inn, Glossop

Visited The Commercial last night. This is a genuine local with a nice vibe and great ales, and a warm welcome. The ales were Ringwood 49er, Robinsons Dizzy Blonde and Jennings Cumberland Ale - which were excellent. Particularly like the mural of the pub regulars gathered round the bar, a nice touch. Highly recommended.

29 Mar 2015 21:29

Queens Arms, Glossop

Visited The Queens Arms last night. This is a comfortable pub in the style of a modern country inn, with slate floor and roaring log fires. Five real ales were on offer including the excellent Thornbridge Jaipur IPA at a bargain £3.00 per pint. Well recommended.

29 Mar 2015 21:28

Fairfield Arms, Audenshaw

Grand looking pub from the outside but a shade disappointing once inside. Sets its stall out for diners with a menu as long as your arm. Beers are from the excellent Hornbeam Brewery (in Denton) but the in-house quality is variable. Sorry, not for me.

29 Nov 2014 14:41

The Kro Bar, Manchester

This bar is opposite The Manchester Academy and was rammed before the gig on Monday. Had a couple of pints of Deuchars IPA which were good. Had to sit outside and watch the busy Oxford Road go by! Overall OK for a pre-gig pint.

29 Nov 2014 14:15

The Salisbury, Manchester

Very busy when I called in on Monday night. Good selection of real ales on the bar. Tried a pint of Regimental IPA which was good. Good pub and hope to call in again soon.

29 Nov 2014 14:04

The Lass O'Gowrie, Manchester

Top class pub. Classic tiled exterior gives the pub a distinctive iconic look. Interior has a timeless feel, especially the snug. Tried two beers from Allgates (brewed at Wigan) both of which were excellent: 'Dry Bones' which was light & tasty and 'Hung Drawn & Portered' which was dark and delicious. Fantastic place.

29 Nov 2014 13:54

The Sheldon Arms, Ashton under Lyne

Large custom built pub that seems geared for diners. Three Lees beers were on the bar. The Lees Manchester Pale Ale (MPA) was excellent and very popular with my friends and colleagues. Overall a good pub and will call again soon.

29 Nov 2014 13:15

The Engine Rooms, Ashton Under Lyne

Called here on a Saturday night a couple of weeks ago for the first time. Large open plan pub with several distinct sitting areas. Four real ales on tap with Wychwood Hobgoblin being very good. Friendly barmaid. Overall better than expected.

29 Nov 2014 13:05

The Prince Of Orange, Ashton Under Lyne

Currently closed and undergoing a total refurbishment. To reopen early Dec 2014 apparently.

29 Nov 2014 12:50

The Star Inn, Glossop

Report from Glossop Pub Crawl on 03.05.2014: excellent pub right next door to Glossop train station. Had Moorhouses White Mist which was very good.
The pub is traditional and comfortable in style, and is well recommended.

4 May 2014 20:54

Howard Arms, Glossop

Report from Glossop Pub Crawl on 03.05.2014: no real ale, so did not hang about too long.

4 May 2014 20:45

The Prince of Wales, Glossop

Report from Glossop Pub Crawl on 03.05.2014: now serving four bees from the Marston range - Pedigree, EPA, IPA and Jennings Cumberland Ale. We tried the Cumberland Ale & IPA which were vey good. The interior of the pub is traditional in style and very comfortable, and was busy when we called.

4 May 2014 20:44

The Globe Hotel, Glossop

Report from Glossop Pub Crawl on 03.05.2014: had the Porter (4.3%) and Imperial Stout (5.8%) - both of which were very good. The Mexican Bean Chilli was also very nice too. Nice pub with a nice vibe.

4 May 2014 20:40

Friendship Inn, Glossop

Report from Glossop Pub Crawl on 03.05.2014: this pub has hardly changed since my previous review (March 2009) - which is no bad thing!
Robinsons Trooper, Unicorn and 1892 were on the pumps. All of us had the Trooper which was very good. Nice traditional style pub.

4 May 2014 20:31

The Oakwood, Glossop

Report from Glossop Pub Crawl on 03.05.2014: Three Robinsons beers were on offer: Double Hop, Dizzy Blonde and Hoptimus Prime - all of which were excellent. The pub was remodelled into a more café style a few years ago, which lends a nice atmosphere and relaxed feel.
Great stuff and well recommended. 8/10.

4 May 2014 20:23

The Corner Cupboard, Glossop

Report from Glossop Pub Crawl on 03.05.2014: Could not get in - absolutely rammed due to the Manchester City versus Everton match being shown on the big screen. Shame, as this pub has been good on previous visits.
This is a staunch Manchester City pub.

4 May 2014 20:16

Norfolk Arms, Glossop

Report from Glossop Pub Crawl on 03.05.2014: Comfortable pub right next to the train station in Glossop. This pub was updated a couple of years ago and is very spacious. The Holts bitter was good. Very busy when we called.

4 May 2014 20:13

Bulls Head, Stockport

Closed on our last Stockport pub crawl (29.03.14).

5 Apr 2014 08:09

The Rising Moon, Matley

Have been calling into The Rising Moon on a regular basis since my last review (April 2010 - goodness, how time flies!). The Robinsons Unicorn is always excellent and in great form. We have dined regularly with the food being great and good value too. The 'new' licensees (since 2012) are doing a good job and are very welcoming.
There is a nice outside seating and childrens play area, which can be very popular during the summer months.
I have been using this pub for over twenty years, so my comments are based on frequent experience and not an isolated one-off visit.
As I said in my previous review, heartily recommended!

1 Apr 2014 21:58

The Boundary, Audenshaw

Have been calling into The Boundary since my last review (Jan 2013) for an occasional pint after work. The Hornbeam beers are always excellent and in great form - especially the Champagne ale. The staff are friendly and the pub looks great since the refurbishment. Well recommended!

1 Apr 2014 21:39

Swan With Two Necks, Stockport

The Swan was another pub we tried on our pub crawl of Stockport last Saturday (28.03.14). Robinsons Unicorn was one of the ales on offer and was very good. This pub is like stepping back in time to a bygone era - as it retains an interior little altered since the 1920's and consists of a wood panelled smoke room and a small snug to the front. Quite simply a classic.

1 Apr 2014 21:30

Winters, Stockport

Winters was another pub we tried on our pub crawl of Stockport last Saturday (28.03.14). Holts Bitter was on offer and was very good. Bearing in mind we called about 5.30pm the Karaoke session was in full swing, with lots of "singing" being done by the clientele. This was lots of fun and good natured as the locals were actually well friendly.

1 Apr 2014 21:19

The Queens Head, Stockport

The Queens Head was another call on our Stockport pub crawl last Saturday (28.03.14).
One real ale was on offer, Sam Smiths Old Brewery Bitter. This was in great condition and great value as three pints cost an astounding £5.40.
As I said on my previous review in 2011, the pub is narrow and has lots of little alcoves which are cosy - so it is easy to getting chatting with those sat nearby! This is a pub full of character and charm, a real gem.
Again, this was another pub that was very busy during our visit to Stockport, which is great news.
Highly recommended if you are in Stockport.

1 Apr 2014 21:09

The Boar's Head, Stockport

We called into The Boars Head on our Stockport pub crawl last Saturday (28.03.14).
One real ale was on offer, Sam Smiths Old Brewery Bitter. This was in great condition and great value. I do like OBB, but do admit to missing Museum Ale (which was withdrawn years ago!!). Also the pork scratchings need mentioning, as they were great too!
The pub comprises of lots of different rooms and is very comfortable with nice traditional décor. Again, this was another pub that was very busy during our visit to Stockport.
Well worth a try if you are in Stockport.

1 Apr 2014 20:58

The Arden Arms, Stockport

Called into the Arden Arms last Saturday night. We tried the Unicorn, Trooper and 1892 ales - all of which were excellent. The pub is full of character and now has a nice conservatory area attached, which was really popular. This was by far the busiest of the pubs on Stockport crawl - and it was easy to see why.

1 Apr 2014 20:45

The Pack Horse Inn, Stockport

This pub has now reopened following a short period of closure, and has been renamed The Cocked Hat. Four cask ales were on offer which were very good - this included the house beer (as brewed by Titanic), Thwaites Wainwrights and Conwy Infusion.
The pub itself is smart yet traditional and was very busy on Saturday when we called. There was also a great range of pies at £2 each. So naturally we had to try them! - and very nice they were too.
This pub is part of a small chain of pubs owned by Atwill Pubs, and faces St Marys church just up from the Marketplace in Stockport.
All in all an excellent addition to the Stockport beer scene and will definitely call again soon.

1 Apr 2014 20:34

The Boundary, Audenshaw

Called into the The Boundary this weekend, which has recently reopened after a period of closure. The pub has had plenty of redecoration and refurbishment before reopening and looks great - traditional yet modern; the new décor really suits the place. Three Hornbeam beers (brewed locally) were on handpump – Champagne, Galaxy and Top Hop – all of which were in excellent condition. Great value at £2.40 a pint as well! The new licences were very friendly and welcoming too.
So heres hoping that The Boundary is as successful as it should be!

19 Jan 2013 20:49

The Globe Hotel, Glossop

Visited The Globe last night (29/12/2012). We found the beer to be rather fine and had several pints of Toby Porter and Amber. Unfortunately, the first pint of Toby Porter had to be changed as it had not been pulled through, but this was done without any issue and with due apology from the barman. Apart from this, all the beers were great! The vegetarian food was tasty and good value for money - the Veg Curry and Spicy Mushrooms were tried and enjoyed. The pub has a nice vibe and was the busiest of the night.

30 Dec 2012 21:27

The Corner Cupboard, Glossop

Visited The Corner Cupboard last night (29/12/2012). Two Thwaites beers were on offer – Lancaster Bomber and Wainwrights. We had pints of each and they were found to be good. The pub seems to be sports orientated, and was reasonably busy.

30 Dec 2012 21:18

The Star Inn, Glossop

The Star is a nice pub in a handy location for the Train Station in Glossop. The beer is well kept and always good. There are usually four or five beers on the handpump. On my latest visit (last night, 29/12/2012), I had pints of Ossett Brewery Treacle stout (particularly nice), Taylors Landlord and Pictish Columbus. The pub is traditional and comfortable in style, and is well recommended.

30 Dec 2012 20:58

Cotton Bale, Hyde

Went in The Cotton Bale last Saturday night. Had a pint of Elland Brewery Maximum Darkness, which was a dark beer and very good. The pub was quite busy but we got served no problem! Overall, not a bad Spoons at all.

19 Jul 2012 21:36

Hare and Hounds, Stalybridge

This pub is now closed and has been converted into an art gallery!

24 Jun 2012 20:47

The Railway, Stockport

Report from Stockport night out 31 March 2012: The Railway was our last port of call on the evenings beer tour and was very busy. Thonbridge Jaipur IPA was sampled, which was superb I understand this is now a regular beer at this pub. The pending redevelopment of the nearby shopping area will undoubtedly sweep away The Railway sometime in the future, so enjoy it while you can!

1 Apr 2012 21:08

Tiviot, Stockport

Report from Stockport night out 31 March 2012: The Tiviot was the quietest pub during the evenings beer tour. A pint of Robinsons Unicorn was sampled and was found to be on good form. This is a gem of a pub recently saved from demolition due to pending redevelopment of the nearby shopping area.

1 Apr 2012 21:04

The Magnet, Stockport

Report from Stockport night out 31 March 2012: The Magnet was extremely busy with all seating taken. The pub was doing a roaring trade, probably the busiest of the evenings beer tour. Several pints of Chocolate Mint Stout from Outstanding Beers were sampled, this beer is just sublime my favourite during the night!! Also, the pork pies are great value at 1.25 each.

1 Apr 2012 21:00

The Midland, Heaton Norris

Report from Stockport night out 31 March 2012: The Midland has now reopened, but did not get chance to sample. Not sure if real ale is still available?

1 Apr 2012 20:58

The Pineapple, Stockport

Report from Stockport night out 31 March 2012: The Pineapple was our next venue. A pint of Robinsons Unicorn was sampled and was found to be on good form. Solid, no frills boozer.

1 Apr 2012 20:54

The George Hotel, Stockport

Report from Stockport night out 31 March 2012: The George has now reopened, but did not get chance to sample.

1 Apr 2012 20:52

The Crown Inn, Stockport

Report from Stockport night out 31 March 2012: Started the evenings Stockport beer tour at The Crown. Two dark beers were sampled - Abbeydale Dark Angel and Phoenix Monkey Town Mild, both were superb. A wide range of beers was on offer, with something for everyone. Class pub.

1 Apr 2012 20:51

The Bay Horse, Newton

The Bay Horse has closed this week.
The Robinsons and Bay Horse signage has been removed from the pub and all of the building has been boarded up.
There is a To Let sign on the building and a barricade has been erected to prevent entry of vehicles onto the car park.
Obviously, this does not look good for the future of this pub.
What a shame..

Times must really be tough if a pub like this cannot survive.

26 Feb 2012 20:50

Hop Pole Hotel, Ashton Under Lyne

Now closed, boarded up, and up for sale.

5 Feb 2012 20:49

The Sportsman, Hyde

Called into The Sportsman last night for a pint. Tried the Pennine Brewery Rossendale Ale and Hambleton Bitter along with Thwaites Wainwright. All were superb and in great condition.
This is one of the two best pubs in Hyde, the other being The Cheshire Ring.

29 Dec 2011 21:36

The Waggon and Horses, Matley

Had a meal and drinks at The Waggon and Horses recently. All the meals in our party of eleven were great and there was clean plates all round!
The pub is smart following some renovation work a couple of years ago, but is definitely geared towards those wanting to dine. The range of Robinsons Beers served are good and well kept. As others have posted the prices are little more expensive than other pubs in the locality. Still, a pretty good pub overall.

29 Dec 2011 21:33

The Cheshire Ring, Hyde

Called into The Cheshire Ring last night for a pint. Tried the Beartown Kodiak Gold and Polar Eclipse beers. Both were superb and on great form.
This is one of the two best pubs in Hyde, the other being The Sportsman.

29 Dec 2011 21:22

The Boundary, Audenshaw

No wonder it is shut again.
It was absolute rubbish on my most recent visit.
Shame - used to be a great place.

27 Nov 2011 22:15

The Lowes Arms, Denton

The Lowes Arms is good pub on the cusp between Hyde and Denton.
They often sell the excellent Hornbeam beers brewed just up the road in Denton, which are superb. Alternatively, Phoenix beers and guest ales are sold too. The beer is always in good condition. The pub itself is smart and comfortable.
Food is good too - you can get a three-course Sunday meal for 11, with plenty of choice (umpteen starters, mains and puds) with lots of other meal deals throughout the week.
I do miss the LAB beers though - personally, I rather liked them.

27 Nov 2011 21:20

The Globe Inn, Hyde

Its Official. The Globe is no more. Currently being converted into flats.

27 Nov 2011 21:08

The Band Stand, Gorton

The Bandstand is a pub that focuses on dining and will appeal to familes, due to the childrens play and activity area that forms part of the premises Fuzzy Eds. However, there is an adults only area if you want to escape the anklebiters. The food is cheap and cheerful, with all main courses on a two for one deal. We dined and the food was OK considering the cost. No real ale available, only mainstream lagers and smooths.

17 Jul 2011 20:35

The Oakwood, Glossop

The Oakwood has changed it focus since my last review (May2009). Three Robinsons beers were on offer: Unicorn, Double Hop and Dizzy Blonde. All were sampled and were judged to be excellent. Very Friendly staff, and the place has a nice vibe.

10 Jul 2011 21:39

The Globe Hotel, Glossop

Spent a great evening in The Globe last night (09/07/2011). This pub is just outstanding. The home cooked veggy grub is well recommended; I had the spicy mushrooms & rice, which was just superb. The Globe beers are ace too! I had several pints of Amber and Toby Porter, both of which were delicious. Good value too, as a round for a party of eight came to a few pence over fourteen pounds. All in all just a great place, just wish it was my local.

10 Jul 2011 21:24

The Sair Inn, Linthwaite

Spent a pleasant Saturday afternoon in the Sair Inn. Six real ales as brewed by Linfit were on offer: Bitter, Linfit Bitter, Swift, Gold Medal, English Guineas and Old Eli. All these beers were sampled and each one was top notch and in excellent condition. As there is no TV, we had to check FA Cup final scores via my mates internet phone! The jukebox was also heavily sampled too. The great thing is the The Sair never seems to change. This pub is just superb and we are already planning our next visit, which cannot come soon enough.

15 May 2011 20:50

The Riverhead Brewery Tap, Marsden

The Riverhead Brewery Tap is located in the heart of the village of Marsden. There was a selection of Riverhead and Ossett beers, which are served from a long bar on the left as you enter the pub. We all tried some of the Riverhead beers, all of which were in good condition. The pub was very popular, and quite right too!!

15 May 2011 20:37

The Queens Head, Stockport

The Queens Head is a cosy, traditional pub in the Underbank area in central Stockport. The pub is long and narrow with a panelled bar area at the front, followed by a few booths and alcoves, which lead to a comfortable seated room at the rear. Of interest are the font dispenser on the bar and various old pictures adorning the walls. The sole draught beer is Sams Smiths Old Brewery Bitter, which is always well kept. The pub can get quite crowded and space is often at a premium, probably due to the bargain cost of a pint!

13 Mar 2011 21:06

The Magnet, Stockport

As I was the first to post a review, I cannot believe this pub has achieved such a (undeservedly) low rating since then. You can enjoy a great selection of real ales (usually a mere 14 on handpump), which have been spot on every time that I have called in for a pint. My colleagues have also enjoyed the range of bottled continental beers that are available too. The dcor and layout is more modern and brighter than a traditional real ale establishment, and maybe some punters find this too sterile? Overall, this pub is a great addition to Stockports real ale scene, and is well worth a try.

12 Mar 2011 21:22

The Ship Hotel, Maryport

Visited The Ship at Allonby during our annual visit to the picturesque Solway Coast. What can I say, this is just a great pub in a lovely location and it is definitely well worth a look if you are ever in the area. Alongside the usual Yates Bitter were Bees Knees 4.5%, Sun Goddess 4.2% and Solway Summer 4.2% - which were all excellent, as always. The sign outside The Ship sums it up rather nicely: Real Food, Real Ale, Real Craic, Real Pub.

27 Aug 2010 20:45

Lifeboat Inn, Maryport

The Lifeboat is great pub situated on Shipping Brow, between the harbour and shopping area in Maryport. The pub itself is small but comfortable, served by a single bar at one end. Four real ales are currently available: Jennings Bitter and Cockerhoop, along with two other rotating local real ales. All the real ales sell for the princely sum of 2.00 per pint!! The beers that I tried were served in great condition and very tasty. Apparently, the pub re-opened in 2008 after period of closure, but seems to be marking its mark locally. Definitely well worth a visit if you are in the area!

23 Aug 2010 21:39

The Cheshire Ring, Hyde

Called in The Cheshire Ring last night and it seemed to be business a usual, I am glad to say Great range of well kept beers were on offer, plus a new addition of a range of tasty pies as well. Brilliant!!!

11 Jul 2010 20:27

Roe Cross Inn, Mottram in Longdendale

Recent addition to the local real ale scene, which has been subject of several recent plaudits. I visited today and tried the Everards Golden Zest, which was nothing short of excellent. The pub itself is traditional in style, and there was a nice friendly welcome on my first visit. Well impressed, and will visit again soon.

20 Jun 2010 21:25

Ye Olde Bulls Head Inn, Beaumaris

Oak beamed bar on the main street in Beaumaris, with plenty of character. Serves a couple of real ales, which are reasonably kept. Just a few minutes walk from the castle and worth a visit.

17 Jun 2010 10:05

Stable Gate, Denton

Not much to shout about, IMHO. Family orientated bargain bucket eatery with kiddies play area bolted on for good measure. Nondescript fizzy keg beers are the order of the day, and no real ale available. Can get busy at weekends.

17 Jun 2010 09:52

The Albion Inn, Ashton Under Lyne

Sadly now demolished and gone.

17 Jun 2010 09:36

The Sailors Return, Beaumaris

Nice and comfortable pub, with traditional feel and dcor, and friendly staff. Only one real ale was on offer, which was Draught Bass which was good and seemed to be selling well. Food seems to be big business here, but as I just nipped-in for a pint was made to feel warmly welcome. The Sailors Return is just a few moments walk up Church Street and I will certainly visit again when next in Beaumaris.

7 Jun 2010 22:11

The Liverpool Arms Hotel, Beaumaris

Pub/bar with a nautical theme, situated at one end of the main street in the centre of Beaumaris. Two real ales were on offer, which were Flowers IPA and Old Speckled Hen. I sampled the Flowers which was reasonable. The place has plenty of character with lots of memorabilia and pictures, even a divers helmet!! Next time I am in Beaumaris will certainly give this place another go.

7 Jun 2010 22:02

Cotton Bale, Hyde

Much-improved Wetherspoons pub, which now offers up to 10 real ales. On my last visit the Gorlovka Stout (6.0%) was nothing short of excellent. My colleagues (drinking buddies) were also well impressed with the (other) beers they had. Lets hope they can maintain and sustain this standard.

7 Jun 2010 21:49

The Rising Moon, Matley

The Rising Moon is a great pub, located in a semi-rural location. The pub is traditional in style with roaring log fire in winter and scenic outside seating area for enjoying the sunsets during summer. This pub caters for both drinkers and diners with aplomb, and will appeal to those who like real pubs. Two real ales are available from Robinsons, the regular Unicorn bitter along with the seasonal beer of the moment (currently the well tasty Dragons Fire) I can certify that both are extremely well kept/served. Food is also served all day and very nice it is too (and reasonably priced). I have been enjoying this pub for many years and is always excellent. Heartily recommended.

6 Apr 2010 22:18

The Mottram Wood, Mottram in Longdendale

Not much to shout about. Family orientated bargain bucket eatery with kiddies play area bolted on for good measure. Nondescript fizzy keg beers are the order of the day. Real ale does surface occasionally, but is usually something bland offering from Courage or similar.

6 Apr 2010 22:01

The Magnet, Stockport

You can enjoy a great selection of real ales (usually a mere 14 on handpump) that are very well kept. My colleagues have also enjoyed the range of bottled continental beers that are available too. The Magnet is certainly great addition to the Stockport Real Ale scene. As I was the first to post a review, I cannot believe this pub has achieved such a (undeservedly) low rating since then. Maybe we need a reality check please

6 Apr 2010 21:50

The Magnet, Stockport

The Magnet is great addition to the Stockport Real Ale scene. The pub has recently been refurbished and now sells a truly top-class selection of real ales. The beers are certainly spot on with Hop Back stout and Gorlovka Stout being superb on my recent visits. The pub has a modern yet traditional feel and is a nice environment for a pint (or two!). Also, The Magnet is only a mere 5-minute walk away from the equally excellent Crown, so that is plenty of reason to visit Stockport for a beer in the evening!

20 Mar 2010 11:08

The Boundary, Audenshaw

Currently closed with a large Pub To Let sign bolted onto the front.

9 Jan 2010 20:49

The Agricultural, Penrith

Report from annual trip to the Lake District, for Agricultural Hotel, Penrith. Visit date: August 2009. Summary of visit: several beers from the Jennings portfolio were on offer; the bitter and Snecklifter were sampled both were on top form, especially the latter. Lunch was taken in the separate dining area, which was also excellent. The pub was very full, even at Saturday lunchtime! Highly recommended.

4 Sep 2009 21:08

The Ship Hotel, Maryport

Report from annual trip to the Solway Coast, for The Ship Hotel, Allonby. Visit date: August 2009. Summary of visit: Yates Bitter and IPA on offer; the bitter as always was excellent, as was the IPA - which proved very popular. Friendly landlord, landlady and locals. Food very nice and reasonably priced. The establishment is very comfortable, with a lounge for dining & drinking and a separate games room that has a TV for watching the footy when it is on. There are a few benches in front of the pub, and in the evening you can watch the stunning sunsets. You can even buy real ale to takeaway too!! A absolute must if you are in the area.

4 Sep 2009 20:51

The Lowther Arms, Maryport

The Lowther Arms is a pub in the tiny village of Mawbury. The pub comprises of a nice rustic lounge to the front, a large games room to the right and more modern conservatory cum dining area at the rear. The bar serves a couple of ever changing local guest ales Hawkshead Bitter and IPA were on during my visit, both of which were very nice. The pub is sign-posted off the B5300 Maryport to Silloth road, so next time you are passing why not stop-off at Mawbury and pop in for a quick pint!!

4 Sep 2009 20:19

The Smithfield Hotel, Manchester

The Smithfield Hotel is a pub in the northern quarter in Manchester. As other correspondents have stated, the pub does not look much from the outside and has a traditional yet antiquated feel inside but if its top quality beer you want, then this is the place, without doubt!! Went yesterday for one of the periodic beer festivals that are held at The Smithy. Some twenty five beers were on offer, many direct from the cask in the cellar. All beers tried were great, but the stand out was Wem Lime Zinger awesome! Thankfully, The Smithy shows no sign of fading away unlike some of the other real ale pubs have done since the regeneration project hit the northern quarter. Long may it continue

The Albion Inn, Ashton Under Lyne

This pub is now closed and boarded up, due to compulsory purchase. It will be demolished soon to make way for a bypass. Its a shame as The Albion was quite a nice pub, in traditional style serving good Robinsons beers and not a poncey gin palace, like most of the other so-called pubs are in Ashton centre. Farewell.

Hawkshead Brewery Beer Hall, Staveley

The Beer Hall is the Hawkshead Brewery Tap, overlooking the scenic river Kent. Obviously, all the Hawkshead Beers are available I especially enjoyed the Red on my last visit. The Beer Hall is a nice airy modern open plan area, and you can view the Brewery as well. The only slight drawback is the opening times of midday to six pm. Also, try Wilfs Caf - which can be accessed directly from the Beer Hall - for some great grub. Overall, totally superb!

The Sun Inn, Hawkshead

The Sun Inn is a 17th Century Inn on the edge of Hawkshead village. The beer range varies, with up to three guest ales on offer. On my last visit, the Taylors Landlord was in good form. The pub has an open plan bar area and there is a nice sitting-out area in front of the pub, which overlooks the village and hills beyond. A good pub in a village of good pubs.

Queens Head Hotel, Hawkshead

The Queens Head is an elegant pub, with fine wood panelling in the bar area and dining room. Beers are from Robinsons and were very good especially the Double Hop. Check-out the sports memorabilia and signed painting in the snug. This pub has a definite old world charm, and is well worth a visit.

9 Jun 2009 14:21

Red Lion Inn, Hawkshead

The Red Lion is a welcoming pub in the picturesque Hawkshead village. It serves three Jennings beers and a guest beer which was Coniston Bluebird on my recent visit. The beers are well kept, and the pub seemed to be popular with locals and tourists alike. The pub itself is very comfortable and there is a beer garden as well. The Red Lion is well recommended and a nice alternative to the nearby Kings Arms.

9 Jun 2009 13:43

The Kings Arms, Hawkshead

The Kings Arms is a friendly pub in the centre of Hawkshead Village, serving two Hawkshead Brewery beers and two guest ales which were all in fine fettle on recent visit. There is a front bar with log fire and a separate restaurant. There is a nice sitting-out area in front of the pub, which overlooks the village square. All-in-all a great Lakeland pub and well worth a try if you are the area. Also, check-out the wood carving next to the bar, which appears to hold up the ceiling!

9 Jun 2009 13:25

The Oakwood, Glossop

The Oakwood is a no-frills basic boozer, with the emphasis is on chat in the large main room. A single real ale, Robinsons Unicorn bitter, is served from hand pump and is a very well kept pint indeed. The pies are good value when you can get them (two for a pound). This pub is located on the main road running through the centre of Glossop, a few moments walk down from the train station. All in all a genuine boozers pub, so why not give it a go and see what you think.

The Sair Inn, Linthwaite

The Sair Inn is a pub I would love to have as my local. As it stands I have to cross the border into Yorkshire, which is no hardship come journeys end. The Linfit beers are, in my view, peerless. I particularly enjoy the Guineas stout, but all their beers are totally brilliant. The pub itself has a nice timeless and rustic feel, with stone flagged floors, roaring fires in the colder months and some quaint dcor. There are various rooms to get oneself comfortable and sample the many delights of the bar. Also there is a great jukebox, which caters for those with a taste for classic rock. The locals and bar staff are really friendly too.
Absolutely one of my all time favourite pubs, I can only award this place a big fat ten points!!!

The Ship Hotel, Maryport

The Ship Inn is a traditional 17th century coaching inn in the centre of Allonby overlooking the unspoilt Solway Firth. The beers are from Yates of Westnewton (just up the road from Allonby): Yates bitter and another ever changing beer from the Yates portfolio. The beers are well-kept, delicious and great value. Food is also available and very nice too. All in all a lovely traditional pub in a marvellous unspoilt location. All in all there is only one word to sum up The ShipFantastic!

4 Apr 2009 22:42

The Caledonia Hotel, Ashton Under Lyne

The Caledonia is an oasis in the centre of Ashton. The interior of pub itself has a modern yet traditional feel, and is divided into several distinct areas. The Robinsons beers are served via handpump and are well kept. Food is good and reasonably priced. The best pub in the centre of Ashton!

17 Mar 2009 21:35

The Prince of Wales, Glossop

The Prince of Wales is a nice pub, just a few minutes walk up the main road from the train station. The interior of the pub is traditional in style and very comfortable. The beers are Marstons Bitter, Marstons Pedigree and one guest ale, all served by hand pump and are well kept. Well worth a visit.

15 Mar 2009 21:35

Friendship Inn, Glossop

The Friendship is a comfortable pub just off the main road in Glossop. The interior of the front room of the pub is wood panelled with lots of Cricket memorabilia adorning the walls. To the rear of the pub there is a pool room, which is more modern in feel and appearance. At the rear is an (heated) outside drinking area, which seems popular even on a chilly March evening!! Robinsons Unicorn Bitter and Hatters Mild are served by hand pump. Also, take note of the old fashioned lamp above the front door as you enter the pub.

15 Mar 2009 21:11

The Roscoe Head, Liverpool

The Roscoe Head is by far my favourite pub in Liverpool. This is a traditional multi room pub that can only be described a classic. Excellent, well kept beer - with the Jennings Bitter being particularly recommended. As other reviewers have already said, this pub has been in all editions of The Good Beer Guide and once there, it is easy to see why. What can I say, just brilliant!!

24 Jan 2009 22:15

The Globe Hotel, Glossop

The Globe is great pub that brews its own (excellent) beers on the premises. Each beer has its own character, but the Porter is especially recommended. The pub itself is in the traditional, classic style like taking a step back in time!! The veggy food is cheap and very good. Located via a five-minute walk from the town centre, but the exercise will be well worth it! A gem.

5 Jan 2009 21:42

The Prince Of Orange, Ashton Under Lyne

The Prince of Orange is a pub in the centre of Ashton, next to the bus station - it serves hand pumped Robinsons Unicorn Bitter, which is in good condition. The pub dcor is a bit tired, and is maybe in need of some attention. In the Evening it can get quite raucous with the karaoke or entertainment, so it wont suit everyone.

5 Jan 2009 20:34

The Cheshire Ring, Hyde

The Cheshire Ring never, ever disappoints. Several of the excellent Beartown beers are always on offer, along with an ever-changing selection of quality guest ales. Beer quality is always on song and at reasonable prices too. A brilliant alehouse, and is highly recommended.

4 Jan 2009 22:06

The Hare and Hounds, Hyde

The Hare and Hounds is a pub mainly geared for diners but has some superb views from the top of Werneth Low (you can literally see for miles!!). The pub has a multi-room interior with a traditional country inn style dcor. There are two guest real ales available, which are usually in good condition on my last visit the Hanby Rosy Nosey was very good indeed. Worth popping in if you are ever passing by.

2 Jan 2009 21:00

The Sportsman, Hyde

The Sportsman has been recently refurbished but without loosing any of its character or innate charm. Now serves virtually the full range of Pennine ales - which are very good and well worth trying. Also, still serves Black Cat mild one of my personal favourites!!

1 Jan 2009 22:42

The Crown Inn, Stockport

The Crown is a true gem. Situated beneath the railway viaduct, just a few moments from the bus station this is a pub not to be missed. The interior consists a multi-roomed layout with traditional pub dcor, which is both welcoming and comfortable. There can be up to 16 real ales on the bar, which are always served in top class condition. If in Stockport you should pop in and sample The Crown for yourself!

7 Nov 2008 21:48

The White Lion, Hyde

The White Lion is a good Robinsons pub that is situated facing Hydes market place and is often busy during the day and evenings. The interior of the pub can be classed as traditional, with a main room and sung that is separated by a long bar. The clientele is generally on the ageing teenager side, but does attract younger types as well. Robbies Unicorn and Mild are now served on handpump and are both great. Usually serves the warming Old Tom during the winter months too. Go on give it a try!

7 Nov 2008 21:31

Swan With Two Necks, Stockport

The Swan is a cracking pub. Great Robbies beers that are served well. I really like this pub as it is quite charming inside and a quiet oasis way from the shopping centre. There are two comfy rooms to the rear of the pub; the wood panelled room is timeless and a small snug type is nice. Quite simply a classic.

4 May 2008 21:22

The Pineapple, Stockport

Superb traditional style pub. Good friendly welcome. Top form Robbies beer with Unicorn still under 2 per pint!! Top class.

31 Dec 2007 20:58

The Globe Inn, Hyde

This pub has been shut for some months.

31 Dec 2007 20:46

The Bike And Hound, Hyde

Great pub with great atmosphere. Guest beers are sporadic - but theres always Newky Brown instead. Classic hard rock jukebox is worth a go - it even has Hawkwind!! Some good bands also play there too. Well worth a try, just give it a go.

13 May 2007 21:23

The Arden Arms, Stockport

Superb classic pub with legendary interior and decor. The Robinsons ales are excellent - especially Double Hop very tasty! Good food too - The Brie and Grape sandwiches are recommended. Well worth a look. An absolute gem.

31 Jan 2007 21:13

The Railway, Stockport

Excellent pub serving tasty Porters beers, all at reasonable prices. The pub itself is basic but comfortable, the ideal place for a pint. Food served during the day. Good range of foreign beers, too. All this and bar billiards as well!! This pub is highly recommended - its a shame it will be demolished in the New Year (Feb 2007 or thereabouts) - so try it while you can.

9 Oct 2006 21:33

Royal Oak, Braithwaite

Excellent lakeland pub serving superb Jennings ales and good value grub. Nice pub with traditional decor. Smashing!!

24 Sep 2006 22:40

The Bay Horse, Newton

Well-regarded pub in Newton. Robinson’s beers are always on top form (especially the Unicorn - delicious!). Large and imposing pub with several rooms and traditional style dcor. Highly recommended.

24 Sep 2006 22:22

The Sportsman, Hyde

A long-standing real ale bastion in Hyde. Top quality beer in a unique pub, with some memorable decor! Regular Plassey ales and Moorhouses Black Cat, plus excellent guest ales as well. Smashing!!

24 Sep 2006 21:50

The Queens Hotel, Hyde

Good no frills but friendly pub. Holts ales are well kept and good value. A good addition to the Hyde real ale scene.

24 Sep 2006 21:36

The Cheshire Ring, Hyde

Fantastic Pub. Excellent Beartown beers are on offer along with a selection of good guests. Beer quality always on song. A cracking alehouse, well worth a try.
