The Flemish Weaver, Corsham

Great improvement since new licencees took over last year. The place is much more friendly and welcoming, good reasonably priced food, decent range of beers. Well worth a few visits!

The Royal Oak, Corsham

Check before you go - they seem to close when they like. We had arranged to meet friends there at 8.30 last Friday night, only to find a disgruntled group of customers outside who told us that it has just closed 'because they didn't have the staff'!

The Royal Yacht Hotel, St Helier

Great location but not much of a place to go to for a drink. Despite advertising that the bar is open to non residents note that the toilets aren't! We were told to leave the pub, cross through the bus station, cross the car park and go to the public toilets.

The Hop Pole Inn, Limpley Stoke

Attractive small country pub, unfortunately owned by the distinctly unimpressive Latona Group, but at least here they started off with a good pub and haven't done anything to make it worse. Good garden, food is not as good or varied as it once was but it's still fair. Bar staff generally friendly and welcoming, which is again unusual for Latona.

The Pulteney Arms, Bath

The Pulteney has been under new management again for the last 6 months or so and the improvement is spectacular. The place is clean, the food is good, the beer is good and the staff are friendly. They've replaced the aged TV's with decent new ones. There's no better place to meet before and after a Bath game or to watch sport.

The Chequers, Bath

Nice pub set in residential streets to the north of the city. Recently refurbished in an understated way, good beer and wine, food looks good although I haven't tried it. Bar staff very friendly. This is a pub to go to for a drink and a chat, rather than a wild night out

23 Feb 2006 16:04

Chapel etc, Corsham

Sorry, should have added - Chapel etc is closed all day on Sundays, which is a great pity.

Chapel etc, Corsham

A welcome new venue for Corsham, nicely renovated and good atmosphere. Bouncers on the door seems to be rather OTT although they're very friendly and the seating is slightly odd; a row of tables at 'normal' level flanked by two rows at high level, so if you're on the side tables you look down on those in the central seats.
The main area is smoking, which is a real pain if you want to eat here - I've eaten here twice so far and on both occasions we were enveloped in fug before we had finished. There is a no smoking area, but it's down below the main level and screened off so that you can't see anything.

Sam Wellers, Bath

Currently closed down and boarded up

The Methuen Arms, Corsham

recently redecorated and re-upholstered - all done in plush 1970's style. Recently introduced background muzac - terrible. May appeal to the over 60's with a penchant for blandness. Staff and manager all wear traditional black trousers/skirts and white shirts - very tea shoppe, very naff.

25 Apr 2005 10:26

The Royal Standard, Lyme Regis

Surprisingly quiet on Saturday night.
Traditional pub, maybe it gets better in the summer!

25 Apr 2005 10:17

The Cobb Arms, Lyme Regis

Large, smokey, not much atmosphere.
Good beer and reasonable food though

25 Apr 2005 10:14

The Grappa Bar, Bath

The GP ' most unlikely conversion I have ever seen', couldn't agree more - we visited last night for the first time. A fine C18 Georgian building has been 'refurbished' with a host of cheap stained softwood beams and columns to give it a rustic feel. Utterly naff! Finished off with a cheap plywood bar.
They don't serve draught beer either, only lager.

15 Apr 2005 08:29

The Kings Arms, Salcombe

This has always been a fantastic pub from which to watch the world go by on a sunny day, but when we visited this easter we found that the landlord had enclosed the whole of the outside area in 2 metre high trellis. It's like sitting in a cage and totally destroys the atmosphere.

1 Apr 2005 08:43

Victoria Inn, Salcombe

We had a meal there over easter - food was very good, no complaints at all.

1 Apr 2005 08:38

The Fisherman's Cot, Bickleigh

It's a great urban myth though. Apparently it is documented that he stayed there in the 1960's, and it is by a bridge, and the water is sometimes rather troubled

24 Mar 2005 16:14

The King of Wessex, Bath

It's a Wetherspoons, which more or less says it all. It's in a brand new cinema complex so doesn't even have the redeeming features of having character or atmosphere. Feels like a canteen, bouncers fairly friendly though. Smoking ban to be introduced shortly.

4 Mar 2005 15:55

The White Horse, Biddestone

A fantastic proper pub in a beautiful village with duckpond, ducks etc. Garden to rear is good for small kids - small scale play equipment, aviary. Food is good and not overly expensive. Bar area can get a bit smoky for comfort, but on a summers day there's nothing better than sitting outside at the front. Friendly landlord.

21 Feb 2005 10:50

The Hat and Feather, Bath

Apparently it has been taken over by the landlord of the Grappa bar (see comments under Grappa Bar to see how he's destroyed that place).
Will be re-named Hunters Bar and Grill or something equally lacking in historic charm.
Another one of Baths most memorable pubs bites the dust.

10 Feb 2005 17:25

Red Lion, Lacock

Imposing pub near Fox Talbot museum and Lacock Abbey. Good mix of clientelle although often ovberwhelmed at lunchtime by large parties of pensioners on tour. Small garden at rear but beware of wasps in summer - I think they breed them there!

29 Dec 2004 10:52

Pheasant Inn, Chippenham

A good pub, heavily food orientated on the right hand side, left is more of a drinkers bar.

29 Dec 2004 10:46

The Old Lane, Chippenham

Modern pub set in the middle of a modern housing estate. That said, it's not at all bad. Only one half allows kids in and then only until 9.00 pm.

29 Dec 2004 10:41

The Pigs Nose, East Prawle

Brilliant pub! Great open fire in winter, idiosyncratic decor and furnishings, characterful landlord and friendly barstaff. Regular live music. Close to coast path.

30 Nov 2004 12:20

The Ferry Inn, Salcombe

Garden is a bunfight in summer, service slow and food poor but expensive.

The only thing going for it is the view, which is unbeatable

30 Nov 2004 12:16

The Sun Inn, Barnes

Called in Saturday (27 Nov) after an absence of 6 months. Big mistake, the place was almost empty and the old atmosphere was sadly lacking.

29 Nov 2004 15:24

Sam Wellers, Bath

It hasn't been known as The Full Moon for at least 20 years!
Very mediocre pub catering to tourists and because of it's central location it doesn't need to try too hard.

23 Nov 2004 16:39

The Livingstone, Bath

Frosted glass makes it sound nice.....they're glass bricks - very lavatorial!

23 Nov 2004 16:27

Dandy Lion, Bradford on Avon

Great pub - suggest you book in advance if you want to eat though, I've failed 3 times by not pre-booking

23 Nov 2004 16:14

The Methuen Arms, Corsham

A truly terrible pub.
Once great (many years ago) but now 1970's dated, peeling paint on the windows, tatty, odd cubicle style seating. Food poor, service poor, prices for beer high.
Hotel rooms smell of smoke and are generally gloomy but expensive.
If ever there was a pub in need of a major overhaul and change of management this is it. Be careful when you go as it closes at odd times if there are no patrons.

23 Nov 2004 15:54

The Great Western, Corsham

Currently for sale I believe, so some change may be on the way....

23 Nov 2004 15:46

The Rams Head, Denshaw

'Open fire when its cold' - it's always cold, there have been occasions when I've had to cling onto cars in the carpark to keep upright against the wind - and that's before I've had a drink!

23 Nov 2004 15:42

The Bell, Bath

One of the best drinking pubs in Bath. Baths best live music pub. Interesting clientelle.

23 Nov 2004 15:38

RSVP, Bath

Depends when you go. Lunchtimes are pleasant with good selection of newspapers, good food, central location, outside seating areas front and rear.

23 Nov 2004 15:32

The Barley, Bath

Good pub, much improved in recent years.

23 Nov 2004 15:30

The Pulteney Arms, Bath

Real gas lighting, good beer, good cheap and filling food, great place to meet up before a Bath game.

23 Nov 2004 15:29

The Old Green Tree, Bath

It may be small but it manages to fit in a beautiful smoke free room.
Well worth a visit

23 Nov 2004 15:28

The Grappa Bar, Bath

Now known as The Grappa Bar.
Formerly the best and last cider house in Bath

23 Nov 2004 15:26

The Northey, Box

Formerly The Northey Arms until recently refurbished.
Large road pub 4 miles from Bath.
Heavily biased towards food, which is good quality, interesting, and priced at restaurant levels.
No longer a particularly good pub to go to just for a couple of beers as the 'drinkers area' has been filled with dining tables.

23 Nov 2004 15:22

The Flemish Weaver, Corsham

This pub was once one of the best in the area. It was refurbished 2 years ago and is now hideously bright and lacks soul. Concentrates on food and it's not a place to enjoy a pint (although it is usually quiet!)

23 Nov 2004 15:18

The Royal Oak, Corsham

Excellent local pub. Right hand bar is a typical pub bar - bare boards, bare tables, open fire in winter and hops hanging from the beams. Often very smokey, which is a shame.
Left hand bar is a more cafe/bistro atmosphere.
Friendly place with great comedy club, folk club, jazz events etc., all held in upstairs function room.

23 Nov 2004 15:13

The Barge Inn, Seend Cleeve

Interesting attractive pub, inside and out. More of a food pub than many, but well worth a visit and if you are eating, the food is excellent.

23 Nov 2004 15:03

The Hare and Hounds, Corsham

An OK pub. Too bright, too smokey. Enormous carpark overlooked by pub tables but sadly no garden
