The Golding Hop, Plaxtol

I hear on the grapevine that this place has closed down.

6 Nov 2016 20:52

The Kentish Rifleman, Dunks Green

Seems to be more room than the last time I visited, seats have been moved around to give a bit more space. Whitstable 'Native' ale was excellent and the food was very good too. Very busy at the weekends - book if you want to eat. They have industrial-strength Wifi which is becoming expected nowadays.

The Hare and Hounds, Lingfield

When you first enter this looks like a really nice cosy country pub, cushions and comfy chairs around with Harveys and Doombar on pump. Then take a look at the menu - eek!, very upmarket and expensive food, no sandwiches or baguettes available, cheapest snack type think going was a croque madam for £9.50, most main meals around £16.
I think this pub is very nice for a few pints or an expensive meal but there's nothing in between.

30 Aug 2014 09:10

The Ringlestone Inn, Ringlestone

Great pub, fine food, excellent beer, high prices, grumpy staff.

9 Jun 2014 07:30

The Cock Inn, Headley

Seems to have gone even further downhill since my last visit. Bar area is like a disco, blue neon lights and loud music and this on a Sunday lunchtime! Food was of average quality and expensive. Had a problem with one of the orders and got an argument instead of a solution.

4 May 2014 12:41

Bricklayers Arms, Chipstead

Nice pub in a lovely setting opposite the boating lake. Big dining room out the back but just a few tables out the front if you want to sit in the sun. Harveys beers on: Sussex best, IPA & Armada. Didn't try the Armada but the best & IPA were both fine. Food was excellent, if a bit pricey with a large & varied menu.

16 Apr 2014 17:32

The Bush, Aylesford

Big pub in a rather nice village setting. Large garden with a marquee for cover. Doombar & London Pride on, Doombar wasn't up to it's normal standard but the Pride was fine. Food is very cheap & cheerful, nothing pretentious, just basic pub grub. Very friendly & helpful staff.

16 Apr 2014 17:28

Crown Point Inn, Seal

Huge pub just off the A25 near Seal. Big range of food available. It all seemed good and reasonably priced, especially if you go midweek when the carvery is only £5.95. Staff all falling over themselves to be helpful. Several beers on pump, I had the Westerham 'Spirit of Kent' which was fine.

9 Feb 2014 16:17

Fleur-de-Lis, Leigh

Nice old building, plenty of room and a real fire inside. Very friendly staff. Green king house so IPA & Speckled hen on, I stuck to the hen which was excellent. A bit slow serving the 13 of us as there was just one guy in the kitchen but we didn't mind as the food was cheap and very good with huge portions.

8 Jan 2014 15:51

The Wheatsheaf Inn, Marsh Green

Went here on a stormy Wednesday with 11 walkers, bar was deserted when we walked in and it was a while before anyone appeared to serve us. Larkins, Harveys and High Weald beers on, I had the Larkins which was excellent. Food was good and cheap. Building itself is in need of some serious TLC and they could do with some more staff but overall a nice pub.

18 Dec 2013 16:52

The Globe and Rainbow, Kilndown

Went with a group of walkers on a Sunday lunchtime and all they were doing food wise was fairly pricey two or three course set meals, no sarnies or baguettes or anything. Persuaded them to do just single courses at a reduced rate which they were pretty grumpy about. Food when it came was excellent. Had a couple of pints of Westerham "Freedom" ale which was fine, they had a couple of others on as well.

15 Dec 2013 16:29

The Grasshopper Inn, Moorhouse

Big old place, more restaurant than pub. Food was fine but quite expensive and there's no real cheap options, even simple baguettes were a bit pricey. Adnams ghostship and Westerham "gods wallop" on.

14 Dec 2013 16:53

Brickmakers Arms, Crowhurst Lane End

Is currently closed.
There is a sign outside saying "Under new management, refurb in progress, Re-opening early 2014"

5 Dec 2013 12:52

Red Lyon, Slinfold

Quite a nice place, plenty of room and very friendly and helpful staff. There's a big garden at the back for good weather. Doombar, Pride and a guest ale on. Doombar was fine, as usual. Food was a bit slow but I think we overwhelmed them a bit with 21 people to serve and not really enough staff. It was worth waiting for though, good quality and reasonably priced.

26 Oct 2013 18:25

The Fox and Hounds, Toys Hill

As others have said, much more restaurant than pub. Very nice pint of Speckled hen on, couple of other bitters too which I didn't try. Food quite pricey but pretty good but no sarnies available on a Sunday. Lots of reserved tables at 1:30pm on a Sunday afternoon and way too many screaming brats for my liking. Big garden for nice weather.

25 Aug 2013 17:50

The Plough and Harrow, Litlington

Brilliant pub, great beer and awesome food. Especially good if you like fish as it's all caught fresh. Six real ales on, the Long man best bitter was particularly good.

31 Jul 2013 14:42

The George and Dragon, Speldhurst

Very expensive gastro-pub. E.g. Sausages & mash £10.50, Sunday roast £16.50, then they add 12.5% "discretionary" tip on when you go to pay (You can ask them to remove it again). Food & beer was very good however, Larkins, Harveys & Brakespear on, all in good condition.

28 Jul 2013 17:28

The Old Crown, Edenbridge

looks like a nice old rustic country pub when you first walk in but the plastic table cloths make it look like a 70's greasy spoon diner. Food was cheap and good. Beer... well, Pedigree ran out and was off anyway, Guinness then ran out which left Ringwood old Thumper at 5.6%, hmmm.

3 Jul 2013 13:59

The Coach House ( the bull), Chelsham

over a year since my last visit and the place has improved yet more. Sunday menu was roasts, pizza and a few other things and food was good. the "sticky chicken salad" was rated excellent even though it sounds odd. Beer was Doombar And Thwaites and was fine.

2 Jun 2013 13:07

The Dorset Arms, Withyham Hartfield

Arrived on a Sunday lunchtime having booked 16 people in for lunch and got a surprisingly offhand, almost frosty reception. No sarnies or ploughmans available on a Sunday and the main meals were quite pricey. Food was OK, nothing to shout about and I would say the same of the beer. It's a Harveys house, the IPA was good but the Sussex was just average. Can't honestly say I enjoyed the place.

12 May 2013 17:49

The Pelton Arms, Greenwich

Nice "old style" type pub with a great atmosphere. Nine ales on pump, all the ones I tried were fine. Food good value and with "Pieminister" pies on offer I couldn't fault it. Well worth the short walk from Greenwich to avoid the touristy type places there.

11 May 2013 21:55

The Fox and Hounds, Walton On The Hill

First time I've visited this place since it became a pretentious wine-bar/closed-down/re-opened/got new management etc.
Doombar, Youngs and one other on pump, the Youngs ordinary was fine. They had a carvery open (it was a Sunday) but agreed to do sarnies / ploughmans for us. The food was excellent, plenty of it and cheap too. This has now turned into a nice pub, hope it lasts this time.

5 May 2013 16:52

The Crown, Capel

Lovely pub right next to the church. A nice bar area and plenty more room at the back, also a big garden. They had Doombar & Tim Taylors Landlord when I was there, both in good condition. Very friendly & efficient staff, had quite a chat with the landlady about how much work is needed to keep the Landlord well, Doombar is much easier apparently. Lunchtime menu is quite limited but fine, sarnies are pretty large. Evening menu looks much more extensive. I liked this pub a lot.

2 May 2013 17:42

Fountain, Cowden

A bit more of a restaurant than a pub. We were a group of 23 and that filled them up, if you want to eat on a Sunday book! It's a Harveys pub, so Sussex and IPA were on pump with a draught cider as well. Food was very good and you can order smaller portions of some dishes (e.g. roasts, burgers without chips) which suited some people well. Service took ages though, we waited almost a hour for our grub.

21 Apr 2013 17:04

The North Pole, Wateringbury

More restaurant than pub. Went in on a Sunday lunchtime to find that the carvery was the only option for food which was a bit disappointing for some of us. Having said that, the roast was very good and reasonably priced. Four real ales on, I tried the Tonbridge Rustic ale which was OK, not great. For some reason I can't explain, I really didn't find this place very inviting.

17 Mar 2013 14:50

The Swan, Edenbridge

Nice pub in the edge of Edenbridge. Three ales on including Pride & Sambrook's "Wandle" ale. The Wandle was excellent although I'm not convinced it's "Spicy & herbaceous" as stated on Sambrook's website! Food service was a bit slow but the food was cheap and good.

6 Mar 2013 16:12

The Padwell Arms, Seal

Bit of a sparsely decorated pub, a bit like drinking in someone's front room! Having said that, there was a huge welcoming fire on a cold Sunday afternoon and the staff made us feel well at home. Five real ales on, I tried the Tonbridge & the Larkins, both in good condition. Food was excellent and came in huge portions, the Sunday roast defeated most people. A most enjoyable visit.

10 Feb 2013 17:21

The Prince Of Wales, Westcott

18 months since my last visit and I'm pleased to see they've dropped the "hot rock" meals and are now purveyors of "Pieminister" pies. Fullers house so Pride & ESB only on this time. Pride was fine, pie was excellent.

31 Jan 2013 15:46

The Greyhound, Charcott

Well, crossed a line today: the first time I've paid £4 for a pint of Ale. Westerhams 1665, it was good, but was it worth four quid?
Nice welcoming fire on a cold day. Menu was varied and food was good.
They also had Harveys Sussex on, don't know how much that cost.

16 Jan 2013 17:06

The Queens Head, Downe

old style country pub. real ales on. Finchcocks was good, Harveys was bad. & reasonable priced menu but roast beef was tough

13 Jan 2013 13:00

The Queens Head, Downe

old style country pub. Four real ales on pump, Finchcocks was good, Harveys was just ok. Varied menu & quite reasonable prices but the roast beef was a bit tough!

13 Jan 2013 12:45

The Carpenters Arms, Limpsfield Chart

My first visit since it was taken over by Westerham brewery. As expected, all Westerham ales on including Spirit of Kent, British bulldog, Finchcocks, Grasshopper & 1965. Spirit of Kent was easily the best in my opinion, they offer a "Tray" of ales (3x1/3rd pints for £3.40) so you can easily try several. The pub has been refurbished and was warm & welcoming on a cold December lunchtime.
The menu, hmmm, a bit pretentious for me! Went looking for sausage & mash or pie & chips and found pigeon breast with pomegranate salad & "Le Rustique camembert tart with walnut cous cous": You what? The prices were not outrageous but we chickened out and went for baguettes which were fine.
The place was quite full with a lot of reserved tables so hopefully they'll make a go of it.

1 Dec 2012 16:03

The Amazon and Tiger, Harvel

Very nice pub, three ales I've never heard of before on: Healey Silverstone & Wicked hound, both from Cottage brewing & St.Andrew's Ale from Belhaven. I tried the Silverstone which was excellent. The Sunday roast was very nice and cheap too, others had bagettes & soup and all were pronounced good.

25 Nov 2012 18:41

The Golden Lion, Luddesdowne

Nice pub in an isolated spot. They had a big fire going when we visited on a cold day, it was really chucking out some heat. St.Austell Tribute was fine, they also had Adnams Broadside on pump. Food was good and pretty cheap too. Very friendly, helpful staff.

11 Nov 2012 17:40

The Hatch, Old Basing

Big C&B place. Had a pint of Andwells "Resolute", which was average. Also had a pie that was stone cold in the middle. Not much impressed.

30 Oct 2012 18:28

The Swan on the Green, West Peckham

Another classic English country pub on a village green. Turned up with a group of 18 walkers but they easily took care of us. They sell their own "Swan" beers, I tried "Early bird" which was light and very nice and "First packet"(?) which was just OK. Others pronounced the "Trumpeter" good but it ran out before I got a try. Food a on the pricey side but good. Nice interior with bare floors and really solid wood tables.

24 Oct 2012 17:56

The Royal Oak, Crockham Hill

New owners took over six weeks ago and the atmosphere here is much improved since my last visit. Walking groups seemed to be pretty much despised before, now they're welcomed, there's now a bare tile floor on the right hand side of the bar so a few bits of mud don't cause any problems. Several Westerham beers on pump, the Finchcocks was particularly good. Slightly chaotic service, I don't think they'd quite got themselves sorted out yet but food was all good when it arrived. It's turned into a nice little pub.

21 Oct 2012 16:26

The Hare and Hounds, Warlingham

Walked past this place today, it's turned into "Caff-Deli Amano".

6 Oct 2012 15:53

The New Inn, Send

Nice pub my the Wey navigation. Quite roomy inside with a large garden which extends down to the canal. Ringwood, London pride and a couple of others on. Beer & food were both fine.

4 Oct 2012 18:52

The Harrow Inn, Caterham

Another visit here with a big group of walkers. I think the place might have changed hands since my last visit. Six beers on handpumps including Ringwood best, Flying Scotsman Caledonian, Speckled hen, Hobgoblin. Food and beer both excellent, this has turned into a really nice pub.

3 Oct 2012 16:44

The White Horse, Shere

Don't know if this place has changed hands since my last visit, don't remember it being a Chef&Brewer place before but in any event there's been a dramatic improvement. Had a a couple of pints of Black sheep which was excellent, they also had London Pride & Doombar on. Food was very good and arrived quickly and staff were all friendly and helpful. We were there on a Thursday lunchtime, maybe there's a different regime at evenings/weekends?

27 Sep 2012 15:31

Brickmakers Arms, Crowhurst Lane End

Apparently it re-opened on 1st June. Interior has been re-done and the old-world style pub has gone and it's now much brighter and more open. There's still the large restaurant at the back. Larkins & Doombar on pump, both good. Food was excellent and reasonably priced, overheard the chef offering to cook "anything they wanted" for the next table - probably not on offer normally, it was pretty empty at the time. Hope they make a go of it this time, don't know how much trade this place attracts as it is in a bit of an out-of-the-way location.

20 Sep 2012 16:55

The Malt Shovel Inn, Eynsford

Very nice old pub, shame it's on a busy main road but you don't really notice inside. Plenty of room inside and a garden for when it's not pouring down. Had a couple of pints of "Long blonde" from the Long Man Brewery, a light summer ale and very nice to. Food was good & cheap and turned up quickly. Landlord & staff all very friendly and helpful.

26 Aug 2012 18:01

Red Bar and Lounge, Dorking

Hidden up a side road off Dorking high street. Quite a roomy place with a decent sized outdoor bit (but not really a garden). Doesn't have the feel of a traditional pub, it's closer to a wine bar. TT Landlord, Darkstar hophead & Shere drop on pump. Tried Landlord & Hophead, both good. Food was very good, the "Club red" sarnies are somewhat overwhelming!

16 Aug 2012 17:45

The Prince Albert, Bletchingley

Nice little Fullers pub. Excellent London Pride, ESB also on pump. Food good & cheap but service was slow and somewhat chaotic. Enjoyed the place though. Nice little garden for when the sun's out.

6 Aug 2012 12:32

The Fox and Hounds, Romney Street

Isolated pub in the middle of nowhere, quite roomy with a big garden with a koi pond. Four real ales on, I tried the local brew, Knatts valley "Fox" which was very nice. They also had Hepworth's Sussex, TEA and one other I can't remember now. Only did hot food on a Sunday: steaks, pies, roasts etc which was a shame as it was a baking hot day & I fancied a ploughmans. Food service was a bit chaotic and some had a long wait for their food. When it turned up it was OK but nothing special. Their normal (i.e. non-Sunday) menu looked much nicer.

22 Jul 2012 17:48

Royal Oak, Cardington

Classic British country pub in a lovely old village. Several beers on, I tried Hobsons & Pedigree, both we fine. Food was cheap & excellent. Very welcoming for walkers with tile floors and a relaxed attitude to muddy boots. Hard to find fault with this place.

18 Jul 2012 09:26

The Good Companions, Warlingham

Pubs turns to supermarket. It's been sold to Lidl.

18 Jul 2012 09:23

The Good Companions, Warlingham

Seems to be closed down & boarded up.

5 Jul 2012 22:32

Brickmakers Arms, Crowhurst Lane End

I hear on the grapevine that this pub is now closed.
Haven't be able to visit it myself to confirm this yet.

28 May 2012 15:06

The Red Lion, Shamley Green

Improved a lot since I was last here. Nice spot on the village green with plenty of shady seating outside at both front and back. Food good if slightly pricey, they don't do sarnies or jacket spuds on Sundays as there's a roast menu instead. Their ploughmans are very nice. Beer was Doombar, Youngs and Sussex ale, all pretty good. Very friendly & helpful staff.

27 May 2012 20:16

The Stepping Stones, Westhumble

Under new management and, as previous posters have noted, the main menu now seems to be written in hieroglyphics on a backboard. The is also a bar/snack type menu on a laminated sheet if you look around which is a bit more user friendly. Having said that, the food was good and served quickly, the only complaint was that the ploughmans came with just a couple of pieces of sliced bread rather than something nice & crusty. Beer was Doombar, London Pride or Youngs, all seemed fine. Seems to be much more walker/cyclist friendly than before with a notice at the entrance offering to refill your water bottles rather than throw you out if you walked in with boots on! Quite an improvement but do something about that menu!

25 May 2012 10:35

The Red Lion, Chelwood Gate

This place concentrates much more on being a restaurant than a pub. Food good but expensive, snack menu OK and the soup was excellent. Shepherd Neame Spitfire was very good, Harveys Sussex pump was off when I was there.
A certain amount of chaos behind the bar and everyone else paying for drinks on credit cards made service painfully slow but food arrived quickly after we eventually managed to order.

19 May 2012 18:30

The Coach House ( the bull), Chelsham

My first visit since it was The Bull. No longer a "spit & sawdust" place, it's now nicely refurbed. Plenty of room inside and a big garden in front and at the side, looked like they had some kind of function room at the back as well. Doombar & London Pride on, Doombar was OK, Pride was fine. Very nice looking and varied menu ,we tried a Pizza which was hand-made and excellent. Staff all very friendly and helpful. Bizarre choice of music.

21 Apr 2012 14:03

The Withies Inn, Compton

Big pub but much of the inside is set aside for restaurant type tables. Huge garden. Green King and Adnams on, only tried the Adnams which was fine. Restaurant food is at the top end of the price range but bar type meals are much more reasonable. Staff are all "older types" who actually seem to know how to run a pub, so service is fast and faultless.

15 Apr 2012 17:06

The Cock, Ide Hill

First visit since the new management. Menu upgraded and now with above-average prices. Portions are huge, however. Sunday menu has roasts and a couple of items from the normal menu, rest of the week include sandwiches and jacket spuds. Abbot Ale still good.

19 Feb 2012 16:31

The Grasshopper on the Green, Westerham

Old style pub right on the village green. Not much room in the two downstairs bars but there's a big dining room upstairs. Nice log fire burning in the rear bar. Westerham beers on pump, they only had "Jubilee" on while I was there but that was fine. Food was good but quite expensive. Very friendly / helpful staff.

16 Feb 2012 16:38

The Red Lion, Chobham

Out of the way pub, a little bit austere inside, not a "cozy pub" type place but nice enough. Quite a fair bit of room and a large garden for the Summer. St.Austell Tribute & London Pride on both in excellent condition, food also very good and not too pricey.

9 Feb 2012 16:47

The King and Queen, Caterham

Very nice pub on the high street of Caterham on the hill. A Fullers house, we tried the Pride & the "Jack frost", both in excellent condition. Food was good and amazingly cheap: all cooked meals, including Sunday roast, were 5. Nothing on the menu for veggies except sarnies though.

5 Feb 2012 15:47

The Hare and Hounds, Godstone

Food has improved a lot since my last visit, they now have a varied menu and everyone enjoyed it. This time the Doombar was off but the Spitfire was fine. Really friendly and helpful staff. Easily the best pub in Godstone.

29 Jan 2012 16:07

The Bucks Head, Godden Green

Shepherd Neame house set in a lovely location. Tried the Masterbrew & Spitfire both of which were very good. Food was very good but the system was a bit odd ... we were a large group of walkers and we booked in advance saying most people would be having sandwiches / soups type of meals. As a result, they wouldn't let the one or two people who wanted order a roast dinner. Apart from that they were very well organized and helpful. They've got a nice cat too.

22 Jan 2012 16:49

The King William IV, Mickleham

Really nice little place, can't believe I've never been here before. Not a great deal of room inside but a big garden at the back with great views for the summer. Shere drop, TEA & one other on pump, the TEA was excellent. Quite a limited menu with a couple of fairly expensive meals on offer but we stuck to the jumbo sausages / burgers / ploughmans end of the menu which were all good.

21 Jan 2012 17:21

The Kentish Rifleman, Dunks Green

Nice pub in a bit of an isolated spot. Smallish bar area with wooden floor, comfy sofa and real fire but most of the pub is taken up with the eating area with tables pretty much shoehorned in. The roast I had was good and reasonably priced and everyone seemed to enjoy their food. Harveys Sussex was in excellent condition and they also had a couple of guest beers I'd never heard of before. Book if you want to eat at a weekend, the place was packed.

15 Jan 2012 16:14

The Prince of Wales, Esher

This is now a chef & brewer place. Big pub with lots of room. Standard C&B fare, special offers on food lunchtimes Mon-Sat, food all OK but nothing really special. Doombar, Pride & TEA on, Doombar was fine, didn't try the others. Can't say why but I didn't really enjoy the place, it just didn't seem very welcoming.

31 Dec 2011 16:59

The Olde George Inn, Shoreham

Stopped here for lunch on a cold winter's day. They had two roaring fires going which was very welcome. Beer was "Gravesend shrimpers" bitter and "Wolf in sheeps clothing" mild. I hadn't heard of either before but both were in pretty good nick. The pie & veg I had was excellent but others thought their food wasn't served hot enough.

18 Dec 2011 16:53

The Dolphin, Betchworth

Haven't been here for a while but it seems to have got even better. There's a new dining room out back and there seems to be more space around the bars. They had three real fires going as well. Young's ordinary was in very good condition, they also had Special, Winter warmer & Bombardier on. Food very good too.

15 Dec 2011 17:06

The Gallipot Inn, Hartfield

Nice little pub all on it's own on a rather busy main road. Stone/woods floors and a real fire at one end. Harveys Sussex best & Old ale on. Both OK but neither great. Food very good and reasonably priced. NOTE: It's closed all day on Mondays.

2 Dec 2011 16:43

The Golding Hop, Plaxtol

A real gem of a place. Excellent beers (Brains & Adnams), cheap, cheerful & plentiful food, grumpy landlord and a lovely old building. We need more pubs like this.

30 Oct 2011 16:57

The White Bear, Fickleshole

Huge pub with loads of room and an even bigger garden. Even so, seemed to be filling up pretty quickly. Pigrim Surrey ale, Pedigree, Harveys, Brakespears and Ringwood 49-er on. 49-er was excellent. Food good with pretty big portions, even the sandwiches are a full meal in themselves.

29 Oct 2011 15:53

Boars Head Inn, Crowborough

Lovely old classic pub building with nooks & crannies everywhere. Adnams, London pride & Harveys on, I tried the Adnams and Harveys & they were both good. Food was reasonably priced and everyone enjoyed it, I had "wild boar sausages" which were excellent. Bunch of right grumpy locals barricading the bar but I can put up with that.

16 Oct 2011 16:50

The Joshua Tree, Redhill

Four years since I last visited this place, seems to have improved quite a lot. Roomy pub with a dining room type area at the back and a more traditional pub-style bar at the front with comfy chairs etc. Small garden out back. Doombar & Harveys Sussex on, both good. Slightly expensive looking evening menu but the lunchtime options are reasonably priced and very good. Seems to have an African slant: I had a Kangeroo burger & they also had ostrich on. Everyone pleased with the food.

13 Oct 2011 15:04

The Prince Of Wales, Westcott

The new owners have only been there for a couple of weeks. Nice clean place with bare wooden floors. Quite roomy and with a beer garden at the side and a restaurant out back. Full range of Fullers beers on but I tried the York brewery's "Guzzler" which was fine. Very cheap & basic menu or Tapas at the moment but I think they're still getting things in order. Worrying signs of pretentiousness on the horizon with adverts for "hot rock" meals (i.e. cook at your table) around the place. A pleasant lunchtime spoilt by an obnoxious brat that screamed pretty much the whole time.

22 Sep 2011 17:20

The Cock, Ide Hill

Since my visit last year they have now started to cheap & cheerful cooked food on Sundays. I'm talking sausage, egg, beans, chips sort of thing but it's all good. Had Green King IPA & Abbot ale on this time. Tried both, enjoyed both.

18 Sep 2011 16:58

The Hand in Hand, Boxhill

Completely refurbed and now renamed as the "Box tree inn". Bright airy place with wooden or stone floors. Big garden. Brakespears, Doombar, Spitfire & Black horse on pump. Tried all but the Brakespears and they were fine. Menu promised a lot but delivered rather less, food was bland and disappointing. Sandwiches were by far the best option. Service was painfully slow for a couple of people.

15 Sep 2011 15:44

The Black Horse, Stansted

Bit of an anonymous building tucked away behind the church. Plenty of room and a huge garden. Food all cheap & cheerful, I think there's a Thai restaurant involved somehow as all the food was brought out by Thai waitresses. Youngs, Larkings & TEA on, I had the Larkins which was fine but ran out pretty quick.

21 Aug 2011 18:15

The Wheatsheaf Inn, Grayswood

Nice enough pub, lots of room inside including a rather austere 'conservatory' type extension. Very friendly & helpful staff looked after 15 of us without any problems. Food good and fairly cheap too and a good selection of specials on. Doombar, London pride and Gales Seafarer on pump, I tried the Seafarer which was fine.

20 Aug 2011 17:36

The White Horse, Holtye

More restaurant than pub, there is a small bar but you wouldn't go there for an evening's drinking. Menu was expensive but the food was very good (there's a special 'roasts' type menu on Sundays). On pump was Harveys Sussex and Bath ales 'Gem', a beer I've not had before but it turned out to be rather nice.

14 Aug 2011 19:00

The Barley Mow, West Horsley

Quite a nice place, looks big from the outside but seems oddly lacking in seating on the inside. Big garden but once again very few tables in it. Youngs, Pride, Green King & Tim Taylors on, I had a couple of pints of Landlord which were fine. Food good and surprisingly cheap as the place is bordering on a gastro-pub. Food service a bit slow but worth the wait.

11 Aug 2011 15:55

The Kings Arms, Meopham Green

Pub is on a village green but also unfortunately on a busy road. Inside it looks a lot more restaurant than pub but they had a nice pint of Skinners on. Also had Leffe on tap, which is nice. Food reasonably priced and good and the staff very friendly and helpful. Just didn't feel at all like a nice cozy country pub.

10 Aug 2011 17:27

The Black Rabbit, Offham

Huge pub in a picture-postcard location by the river. Tanglefoot, Fursty ferret and Badger on, all pretty OK. Food was reasonable priced, good and plenty of it. Lots of staff to look after you so and the grub came quickly. Unfortunately the place was also knee-deep in screaming kids.

7 Aug 2011 17:54

The Old Ship, Tatsfield

Village pub in a lovely setting on the green. Bombardier & Youngs on, both good. Cheap menu and good food. Very friendly staff. Big garden but not much shade in it so we sat inside on a baking hot day. Looks like the place has recently been refurbished / redecorated.

3 Aug 2011 15:47

The Nevill Bull, Birling

Bit of a nondescript looking pub in the middle of Birling. Had a decent pint of Harveys Sussex and an OK pint of Landlord. Interesting menu, they had a hog-roast going on the Sunday we were there, a cheap "hog in a bap" option or the full roast dinner were on offer. Very friendly and helpful staff. Not too impressed with the beer garden, it isn't much more than a roped-off corner of the car park.

31 Jul 2011 19:32

The Black Horse, Amberley

Nice pub in a very pretty village. Had Hopbach summer lightning & Harveys Sussex, both in good condition. They also had Green king IPA on. Food all good and reasonably priced, the "three way roast" seemed to go down particularly well. Not much room inside really but a there's a big enclosed garden for sunny days.

24 Jul 2011 18:40

The Crown, Otford

Very nice village pub. Four real ales on, Dorking gold, Westerham APA, "Three in a bed" from Tunbridge wells brewery and another. Tried the Dorking Gold which was very good and the "Three in a bed" which was average. Sunday roasts were good and cheap. Very friendly & helpful staff. Only downside is that it's pretty cramped when you're trying to sit down to eat.

17 Jul 2011 16:14

The Black Swan, Martyr's Green

Not really a pub, just a rather pretentious restaurant. Food very expensive, even sandwiches were over 9. At least the Doombar was in fine condition.

14 Jul 2011 17:40

The Rock, Chiddingstone Hoath

Another classic country pub. Low beams and a well-worn stone floor add to the character. Had an excellent couple of pints of Larkins: they had 'ordinary' and 'platinum blond', they also had Doombar on. Food was good with big portions and reasonable prices. Very friendly & efficient bar staff.

10 Jul 2011 16:16

The Cock Inn, Luddesdowne

Beautiful, classic country pub with a "No kids" policy. About six real-ales on, they seem to focus on Adnams but I had a fine pint of Masterbrew and there was also Tribute & Goachers on. Food is cheap & cheerful to the extreme, only five cooked items on the menu: max price 8.50. We went for the submarine rolls which were just what we needed. I like this place a lot, shame it's so far from my home patch.

3 Jul 2011 17:16

The Hare and Hounds, Godstone

Probably the best pub in the village. Nice location overlooking the village green but the "garden" is spoilt by the nearby A25. Harveys sussex was fine but the Spitfire was off when I was there. Food OK, nothing special but no complaints either.

2 Jul 2011 21:01

The Seven Stars, Leigh

Excellent pint of speckled hen. Also had Pride & something else on. Main meals are a little bit pricey but there's a "lite bites" menu that's fine for lunchtimes. Quite a large restaurant type room and a smaller bar area. Nice big garden as well.

30 Jun 2011 17:28

The Royal Oak, Sparklow

Last visited this place over two years ago. Since then they've expanded their camping area and added a bunkhouse. The place is very popular and so if you want to eat booking is essential at weekends. Although the excellent food is the focus here, there's still a bar area to sit & drink in and so it still retains a nice atmosphere. Pedigree, Hartington and Buxton ales on, all good.

12 Jun 2011 17:33

The Stepping Stones, Westhumble

Strange sort of feel to this place, more restaurant than pub. There is a bar area but it's in no way "cozy" like a traditional pub. Beer is all good, Doombar, London Pride, TEA and Ringwood on when I was there. Food is also good and very reasonably priced. Bar service is friendly but slow, they seem to have some weird system whereby they disappear into the kitchen after serving each customer. Somewhat intimidating notice on the door if you're a walker.

9 Jun 2011 17:41

The Cock Inn, Headley

Hmmm .. my comment made on the 2nd June has disappeared. So, here's another go ....

Visited this place today after a gap of about 3 months. Standard of food & service has taken a dive while prices have taken a hike. Portions were small for the price and overall quality pretty unimpressive. Someone actually had a moan at the staff about it (and that takes quite a lot!). Beer still good: Harveys & Hook Norton on.

7 Jun 2011 19:53

The Pineapple, Dorney

Very nice traditional style pub. A bit cramped inside and pretty busy: booking for food would be sensible. London pride, Hobgoblin and Black sheep on. They do an amazing selection of sandwiches all at 7.25 which includes salad, chips or soup. They are almost to much to eat, one of a party asked for a "doggie bag" to take away and it was handled like it's a pretty frequent request.

5 Jun 2011 17:33

The Jolly Sportsman, East Chiltington

Excellent beers from the barrel, Harveys Sussex and Darkstar hophead were on when I visited. Secluded location and a large and very nice garden out the back. Food stupidly overpriced and not worth it.

21 May 2011 16:40

The Valley, Caterham

Still closed and boarded up.

20 May 2011 15:08

The Plough, Dormansland

Nice pub in lovely countryside. Very friendly staff. Doombar, Pride & Harveys on, the Doombar was very good. Food OK, roasts on menu on a Sunday but no sandwiches. Got pretty busy on a Sunday lunchtime, might need booking if you want to eat.

15 May 2011 17:01

The Rashleigh Inn, Polkerris

Perfect lunch spot on a walk from Charlestown to Fowey. Beautiful spot in a sheltered cove, we sat outside and it's a real sun trap. Otter ale & TT Landlord on, the Otter ran out as we arrived, the Landlord was OK, not great. Everyone enjoyed to food. We were there out of season (Beginning of May) and it was pretty quiet, apparently it gets manic in high season.

7 May 2011 19:26

Polgooth Inn, St Austell

Used this as a lunch stop on a walk from Mevagissey. Looks a bit non-descript from the outside but inside it's a real gem. Lots of room and a big garden too. Really nice menu, had a venison & juniper burger and a couple of pints of "Proper job", all excellent. Friendly staff too.

4 May 2011 16:48

The Victory Inn, St Mawes

Had a fine pint of Doombar and really nice sausages & mash here. Which was pretty much what I wanted.

2 May 2011 18:05

Plume of Feathers, Portscatho

Very welcoming place at the end of the walk from St.Just. Decent beer, friendly staff and nice old interior. Didn't eat but the menu looked fine.

2 May 2011 17:59

The Volunteer, Sutton Abinger

New management since I last visited and they were very friendly and helpful. Really nice country pub geared up for walkers / cyclists etc with tile floors, real fires, big garden and hosepipe. Hall & Woodhouse place, Tanglefoot, Badger, Sussex & Hopping hare on pump. Hopping hare was very nice indeed, haven't tried that one before. Food good and reasonably priced.

31 Mar 2011 16:07

The Abinger Hatch, Abinger Common

Walked past the place this afternoon, it's currently closed for redecoration / refurb.

31 Mar 2011 16:00

The Carpenters Arms, Limpsfield Chart

Village green pub popular with walkers and classic car fans. Building is in a lovely location but could do with some TLC, the small garden is a real sun-trap on a summer afternoon. Black sheep and Adnams on, both OK, not great. Just a simple pub-type menu available, food was fine but service was a tad slow.

28 Mar 2011 11:06

The Crossways Inn, Churt

I've walked around this area for a good few years & can't understand how I've missed this little gem. Excellent choice of ales on all weel kept, I had Hopback Crop Circle, they also had Ringwood 49er, another favorite of mine and a couple of others including a mild. Very impressed by the menu, good unpretentious pub grub, I don't think there was anything on it over 9 in price. Everyone was well impressed. On the way out I noticed they've got a big garden on the other side of the car park as well.

26 Mar 2011 17:37

The Two Brewers, Hadlow

Popped in here for Sunday lunch with a bunch of walkers. The place doesn't appear very inviting from the outside: it's on a busy main road and the building looks a bit dilapidated. Inside we found a real gem of a place, a basic village pub with the old-style frosted partitions. It's a Harveys pub and they had four of their ales on, I had the Sussex best which was very well kept indeed. There was a special Sunday menu on: beef/lamb roasts or Sandwiches only but the roasts were good and very good value: 7 each, 9 for two courses, 11 for three. I really liked this place.

6 Mar 2011 17:06

The Whyteleafe Tavern, Whyteleafe

Despite this being my local I haven't visited it for around six years: it's had a bit of a grim reputation! Went there on a Saturday evening, brightly lit, packed out and very lively. There were four plasma screens showing football and a deafening duo singing cover versions. Had a pint of London Pride which was not great, they had several others on including Spitfire. Most people seemed to be drinking 1664 or Magners. Not really my bag of chips but if you're looking for a pub with a lively atmosphere on a Saturday night it could be worth checking out.

5 Mar 2011 22:35

Pub, Chilworth

Seems to have changed a lot since I was last here and now is a gastro-pub, more restaurant than pub actually. Had a couple of pints of Hardys & Hansons Olde Trip which was very good but pricey (3.50). The food was also on the expensive side but was excellent, had the S.African bobotie + Banoffee pie for 12 mid-week deal and was really pleased with it. I don't think it's the sort of place where you'd want to spend an evening drinking, though.

3 Mar 2011 16:20

The Skimmington Castle, Reigate Heath

About a year & a half since I was last here and I have to say the place has improved yet again. Two groups of about eleven persons each happened to turn up at the same time and despite some minor chaos around the bar the
staff managed to look after us all pretty well. St.Austell Tribute & Harvey's Sussex on to start with but the Sussex ran out pretty soon. Food very good and a wide choice on the menu.

17 Feb 2011 18:56

The Bricklayers Arms, Shamley Green

Nice pub on the corner of a village green. Doesn't look much from the outside, on a busy road, but nice inside. Plenty of room with both tables and comfy chairs around an open fire. Beers were fine: Doombar, London Pride, Exmoor & Surrey hills. Good selection on the menu and pretty reasonably priced too, chilli burger wasn't nearly hot enough for me but then I have an asbestos tongue. Friendly bar staff took care of us well. Prefer this place to the Red Lion on the opposite side of the green.

12 Feb 2011 18:55

The Sir Roger Titchbourne, Alfold Bars

Went here with a group of 14 walkers and they fitted us into the restaurant part of the building which was a shame as the other side has a much nicer feel with low beams, an open fire and flags on the floor. Felt a bit out-of-place in a posh restaurant with muddy boots on! Beer was good, I had Darkstar hophead & Youngs, they had others on as well. Food was good too although a tad pricey. Staff all very friendly and helpful.

6 Feb 2011 17:16

The Royal Oak, Crockham Hill

Not a huge place, quite a nice 'pub' style bar on the right and a more sterile, restaurant type room on the right. Westerham brewery beers on pump, I had the SPA which was fine. Food was good the "pie of the day" [steak&stilton] was excellent and just the right size for lunchtime.

3 Feb 2011 16:14

The Anchor Inn, Hartfield

Nice old building, a bit tatty and in need of some TLC. Pleasant front bar and very large back bar / restaurant both with real fires going. If you sit at the very far end of the back bar, you're a long way from the heat! I had a couple of pints of Larkins with was fine. The food was a bit disappointing, some people had a long wait just for soup and my cheese burger was somewhat bazaar: a nice burger, as you'd expect, but with a 1/2" slab of cheese (not cooked, melted or anything) slapped on it. Odd.

31 Jan 2011 13:56

Cricketers Arms, Ockley

A classic country pub. Unfortunately it's on a busy main road but you don't notice it once inside. Ringwood best on and kept in very good condition. Food all good and friendly service as well. Could do with stoking the fire up a bit, it was surprisingly chilly in there.

29 Jan 2011 18:34

The Plough, Leigh

Very nice old country pub set on a village green. One 'proper' pub-type bar and a couple of quite large restauranty type rooms. Tables outside as well. Badger beers on (Tanglefoot, Pickled partridge & badger ordinary) and K&B Sussex ale. Only tried the partridge which was fine. Food all good with a real 'home made' feel about. I like this place a lot.

27 Jan 2011 19:20

Papermakers Arms, Plaxtol

Looked a bit bare and unwelcoming when we first walked in but livened up when some more people arrived. Very simple, cheap menu on a Sunday: roasts, a couple of veggie options or sandwiches: portions were pretty substantial. Beer was St.Austell "Tinners" or "Proper job" both served from the cask.

16 Jan 2011 17:02

The Castle, Outwood

Nice place, cozy & warm inside on a bitterly cold day. Pilgrim's progress and Harveys Sussex on. Only tried the Progress which was fine. Food good with quite a varied menu available. Staff very friendly and helpful and pretty efficient with it.

5 Jan 2011 17:24

The Red Lion, Betchworth

Took a bunch of walkers here as there was no room at the Dolphin. Sunday menu was a bit limited but there's a more pub-like menu on for the rest of the week. However, the Sunday roasts were superb and the food was all generally excellent and reasonably priced. Doombar, London Pride & something else (Adnams?) on, all in good condition. Will make this place the first choice next time & keep the Dolphin as "plan B".

2 Jan 2011 17:05

Wattenden Arms, Kenley

Nice country pub set in a bit of an isolated spot. Very good value food: Sunday roasts for 4.99 and you get a big plate full. Youngs & St.Austell Tribute on, both good. Think they often have Tim. Taylors on sometimes as well.

20 Dec 2010 14:59

Royal Oak Inn, Staffhurst Wood

Big old country pub. Lots of real ales on (30p discount on 'specials' with a CAMRA card!), tried Larkins and Kings which were both excellent. Food very good, bit of a "gourmet" menu but still a couple of classic pub meals on. Place was surprisingly empty when I was there on a Sunday lunchtime but I suspect this was an exception, looks like the sort of place that gets packed most weekends.

28 Nov 2010 16:12

The Jolly Tanners, Staplefield

Visited this pub on a REALLY busy day (London-Brighton vintage car run was going past the door at the time). Was made really welcome, served quickly (we did book ahead) and food was excellent. I was drinking the Harveys Sussex which was excellent. Very friendly Landlord & staff. A classic country pub.

13 Nov 2010 11:21

The Bull, Limpsfield

This has been refurbished since I last visited and is now pretty up-market. Timothy Taylors Landlord & Westerham Perle (A summer ale) on, both good. A very varied menu, including special lunchtime options, everyone enjoyed their food. The place was busy even on a Wednesday afternoon, best to book if you intend eating here at a weekend.

10 Nov 2010 17:29

Dukes Head, Brockham

This place is being re-branded as the "Inn on the green" with the "Grumpy mole" restaurant, opening 9th Nov I think.
Walked through Brockham yesterday and took the opportunity to peer in through the windows. The place has been turned into another gastro-nightmare place. One more country pub gone for good.

5 Nov 2010 11:32

The Station Hotel, South Nutfield

The sort of pub I quite like, a bit tatty, bare wood floors, in the past would have been called a "spit & sawdust" place. Really nice pints of London pride and Fullers Red fox on, also had Youngs but I didn't try that. Cheap & cheerful menu, most meals around 5.

28 Oct 2010 19:13

The Drummond Arms, Albury

Place has been refurbished since my last visit, now more restaurant than pub. They seem to have more room now, plenty of space both in and out. Four real ales on, Pride, Adnams, Surrey Hills and something else. The Pride and Shere drop were fine. Food was OK, the "Drummond rarebit" was described as "odd" but everything served up got eaten. Very friendly & helpful staff.

7 Oct 2010 20:50

The Bottle House, Penshurst

Big place, more gastro than pub, nice country location. Decent pints of Larkins and Harveys on. Foods was all pretty good. Lots of room and a fair size garden as well.

4 Oct 2010 18:54

The Griffin, Claygate

Great pub. In a bit of an urban setting, but has a real cozy feel inside. Paving slabs on one side of the bar, carpet on the other. Quite a few tables outside but they're by a (quiet) road.
London pride, Youngs and Adnams regatta on pump, all pretty good. Excellent, cheap food but we had to wait quite a while for it.

9 Sep 2010 17:00

The Harrow Inn, Caterham

A return visit to this nice pub. Walked in unannounced with 10 of us, a lot of reserved tables around but we managed to fit in OK. Deuchars, Adnams and Speckled hen on. Food was very good indeed, everyone enjoyed their meals. They do a special deal if you're over 60, 5 for a (slightly smaller) main meal + a coffee. There's a big marquee in the garden so you can sit outside even if it's raining.

5 Sep 2010 17:34

The Cock, Ide Hill

Nice country pub on Ide hill village green. Used to be a bit anti-ramblers but seems to have new owners that are much friendlier. Adnams and Green king IPA both OK, not great. Note, they only do cold food on Sunday lunchtimes, which is odd, but the ploughmans and sarnies were fine.

29 Aug 2010 17:59

Scarlett Arms, Walliswood

Current landlord has only been there three weeks or so. Hall & Woodhouse Badger & Tanglefoot on but I had the K&B Sussex ale which was excellent. Even though 18 of us walked in together the food arrived quickly and was good. Staff very friendly and went out of their way to look after us. Well impressed.

21 Aug 2010 18:01

The Red Lion, Shamley Green

Plenty of room both inside & out. Beer (Ringwood 49'er) OK, not great. Menu is pretty pricey but food was fine. Waitress service if you sit down (and eat!).

20 Aug 2010 18:08

The Hatch Inn, Colemans Hatch

Classic old country pub in a lovely setting. Not a great deal of room inside but has outside tables front & rear. Harveys, Doombar and Larkins on which were fine. Menu is changed every day and has quite a wide range of meals, veggie options looked unusually good. Only had a ploughman's but was well impressed. Bar service was painfully slow.

18 Aug 2010 20:33

Three Horseshoes, East Worldham

Nice place, very friendly staff, quite roomy with a garden as well. Food good and reasonably priced. London Pride, Gales HSB and something called "Seafarer's ale" (3.4%) on which was very nice indeed.

15 Aug 2010 18:02

Sir Douglas Haig, Effingham

This pub was always a bit dingy has recently been spruced up and is now quite nice. Food was "interesting", fahitas and pies were good but the ploughmans had some strange combination of ingredients. Menu is quite varied and reasonably priced. Beer was good (London Pride + Adnams lighthouse) but pricey, 3.30. Lots of room and seats outside both front and back.

12 Aug 2010 17:06

The Sun Inn, Chobham

Town centre pub on a busy main road, a bit tatty but quite nice. Friendly staff, cheap food. Several real ales on including one that is brewed exclusively for this pub: "In bourne and bread" ale. Brewed with treacle apparently somewhere in Dorset (Sixpenny brewery??). Strong flavour & very nice indeed.

29 Jul 2010 18:33

The Carpenters Arms, Ilsington

Classic old English country pub. liked it a lot. Food is good and cheap, Otter ales from the barrel.

27 May 2010 08:35

The Rock Inn, Haytor Vale

Quaint old place with decent beer on (Otter, Jail ale, Dartmoor best), but much more of a restaurant than a traditional pub. There's nowhere to comfortably lounge around and drink without feeling like you should be eating a meal. Nice garden opposite if the weather's good.

27 May 2010 08:33

White Horse, Ditchling

Arrived here unannounced on a Sunday lunchtime with nine people. All tables were booked but the staff were really helpful and managed to shoe-horn us into the restaurant area. Initially disappointed with the rather limited menu but we ordered sandwiches which were excellent and fairly substantial as well. Four real ales on, tried the Harveys and Darkstar which were fine. All pretty good really.

10 May 2010 13:35

Pub, Chilworth

Reading through the other reviews I guess this must be another pub that's much better at lunchtime (when I usually visit) than in the evening. Had excellent, if pricey, food: They do a "two courses for 10" during the week which we failed to notice in time. Had a couple of pints of "Ale-pril ale", fine beer, crap pun. Sat outside in the sun, very nice really.

8 Apr 2010 17:07

The Drummond Arms, Albury

Currently closed and completely gutted for a major refurbishment.

8 Apr 2010 16:58

The Kings Head, Holmbury St Mary

Popped in here for lunch today. Six real ales on pump. I chose one from the Pilgrim brewery in Reigate which was one of the nicest pints I've had for a long time. Food was good and surprisingly cheap. They also had a proper log fire going to warm us up on a cold day. Pretty much everything you want in a country pub.

11 Mar 2010 17:16

Ye Olde Windsor Castle, Bookham

Huge chef & brewer pub. Loads of room inside and gardens at front and rear. Standard C&B fare, nothing special but nothing wrong with it either. Had Charles Wells Bombardier on which was fine and a couple of guest ales which weren't. Didn't try the Adnams.

28 Jan 2010 17:32

The William Bray , Shere Guildford Surrey

Came here on a Sunday as refugees from the White horse Inn down the road. Food a bit pretentious and quite expensive. Risotto was fine but could have done with a bigger helping or maybe two helpings. They have a different bar-type menu for weekdays/Saturdays. Had Doombar on which was OK, not great. Also had Shere drop & Ranmore ale on from Surrey hills brewery.

24 Jan 2010 19:20

The White Horse, Shere

Walked in at about 12:05pm on a Sunday. Pub was practically empty. Asked for a menu and was told they only serve food in the restaurant on Sundays. No room at the moment but we could eat about 1:30pm. Walked straight out again and up to the William Bray.

24 Jan 2010 19:07

Crown Inn, Westcott

Paid another visit here last weekend. Still the same old place but now parts of it seem to be falling down, desperately in need of a bit of maintenance and a lick of paint but I understand the landlord is in some kind of dispute with the owners. Had a couple of pints of "Rev. James" which was very nice, a few other beer were on as well. Menu was very limited but all food we had was good. It'd be a real shame to loose this place.

22 Jan 2010 13:52

The Skimmington Castle, Reigate Heath

Re-visited this pub for the first time after a change of management. Food very good, reasonably priced and with quite a varied menu. Had St.Austell Tribute & Green King IPA on. Also had an Adnams pump but it was off when I was there. Beer excellent but pricey (3.20). Seems to be walker-friendly now: boot scrubbing system outside the front door.

26 Nov 2009 17:19

The Carpenters Arms, Windsor

Nice old pub. Went here with a group on a fine Sunday lunchtime, was expecting a full pub but it was virtually empty. Food pretty good and surprisingly cheap considering the location. Very good pint of Doombar, Everards tiger, 6X, London Pride and a couple of others also on pump.

20 Sep 2009 22:19

Cricketers Arms, Ockley

Nice old country pub. Very good pint of Ringwood best on, they also had Green king & London Pride. Good food and very cheap midweek: two meals for 10 deal.

3 Apr 2009 15:49

The Fox and Hounds, Walton On The Hill

Heard on the grapevine that this place was open again: Wrong! Not boarded up or anything but closed and dark.
Locals in the Chequers tell me the previous tenants simply "did a runner". They don't know of any plans to re-open it.

12 Feb 2009 15:55

The Catherine Wheel, Goring

A pub of two halves: one end is a rather characterless eating area, the opposite end is a classic English pub with low beams and a nice fire. About 5 real ales on, the Brakespears was very good. Food was also very good and pretty reasonably priced too.

1 Feb 2009 22:13

The Greyhound, Whitchurch on Thames

Popped in here for a swift pint during a walk. Bit of a shabby place but quite friendly. Charles Wells Bombardier was all they had on and it wasn't the best pint I've tasted.

1 Feb 2009 22:09

The Volunteer, Sutton Abinger

Arrived un-announced with a bunch of 18 walkers. They had no trouble coping with us and the food was served up in quick time. Pretty good stuff but nothing special. Nice badger beers on including tanglefoot and pickled partridge. Also had Harvey's sussex on. The place has a proper country pub feel to it with an open fire at one end and a cast iron job in the middle. Very nice bar staff.

3 Jan 2009 17:40

The Royal Oak, Sparklow

We ate here 2 nights in a row, food was excellent on both occasions. Very nice pint of Hartington bitter on, they also had IPA and a guest beer. We were made very welcome even though we rolled in covered in mud after cycling 3km along the Tissington trail in slush& snow. They also have a bunkhouse, camping field and a paddock to park your horse in.

7 Dec 2008 19:46

Crown Inn, Westcott

Paid another visit to this pub today. Bar has been spruced up since my last visit but still retains that "country pub" feel.
Food good, reasonably priced and plentiful if a bit slow, but then 20 of us did all walk in at the same time.
Beer OK but not fantastic. Perhaps they don't shift enough of it: maybe they'd be better of keeping a smaller range than they do at the moment.
A really nice, unpretentious pub.

6 Sep 2008 21:04

White Horse, Ditchling

Went in here with a group a walkers. There's plenty of room inside and a rather "urban" garden at the back. Sat inside as it was a baking hot day and there weren't any shady tables left outside.
Food was excellent, a bit more pricey than normal but worth it.
I was on the cider to cool myself down, but those on the Harveys pronounced it a fine pint.

29 Jul 2008 12:02

The Seven Stars, Leigh

Nice pint of Speckled hen and some of the best "pub" type food I've tasted.

12 Jun 2008 18:18

The Harrow Inn, Caterham

Took a group of walkers there. Staff very helpful. Nice pints of Ringwood & Speckled hen, also had Spitfire on. Food pretty good and reasonably priced. Quite roomy and has a big garden too.

9 Feb 2008 18:58

The Crown Hotel, Horton in Ribblesdale

A decent enough place, more setup for the hotel residents than drinkers. They only have Theakstons on and only XB on handpump.

28 Nov 2007 13:35

The Golden Lion Hotel, Horton in Ribblesdale

Seems to have gone well downhill lately. Went in on Sunday and the food wasn't very good they didn't have any bitter on! Wandered down to the crown for a pint of XB.

28 Nov 2007 13:33

Crown Inn, Westcott

A cracking English country pub. Friendly bar staff, locals and dogs. Wooden floor so they don't whinge if you have a bit of mud on your boots and a real fire. Nice pint of Adnam's and a couple of guest ales on. Proper pub grub too, none of the usual pretentious muck. Cumberland sausages, eggs, beans and chips: what more could you want!

17 Nov 2007 17:05

The Wotton Hatch, Wotton

This pub is now closed and is being refurnished as an "up market eating place"

16 Nov 2007 21:39

Dukes Head, Brockham

Lovely location on Brockham village green. Nice pint of London pride, they also had Speckled hen on. Food was very good and came in large portions.

14 Oct 2007 15:11

The Noahs Ark Inn, Lurgashall

Classic English country pub on a village green, nice shadey garden to sit in and watch the cricket. Fine pint of St Austell's Tribute, they also had Green King & Abbot on I think. Food was not so impressive, my steak was tough as an old boot and there wasn't really enough. Then a dog scoffed my friends bacon sandwich.

The Joshua Tree, Redhill

Nice pint of Youngs. Food good and plentiful but rather a limited menu (there's a different menu on Sundays). Small garden with patio heaters so I guess that's where the smokers go.

The Tiger Inn, East Dean

Lovely old English pub on a village green. Slabs on the floor means there's no problems marching in with muddy boots & dogs are welcome as well. Horsham & Haveys ales both well kept.

The Cock Inn, Headley

Visited this pub on a Thursday lunchtime and was suprised how full it was: we were lucky to get a table to sit at. Butcombe bitter wasn't at it's best but the Harvey's sussex was fine. Food OK. Twice we had to stand around shuffling our feet waiting for someone to appear behind the bar to serve us, think they were as suprised by the crowds as we were.

The Duke Of Wellington, East Horsley

Went here with a group of walkers. Kitchen was closed: sandwiches only. Had a toasted club sandwich which was served cold and the food service was generally chaotic. London pride was off, Duchars was OK, didn't test the Directors. Maybe we caught them on a bad day but I was pretty unimpressed.

The Barley Mow, Tandridge

This pub has just been refurbished. There's now lots more room inside and it still has the large garden at the back. The "Ramblers rest" bar with slabs down has also been kept. Very nice beers on: Badger best, Hoppy hare, Old speckled hen & Tanglefoot. Food good and reasonably priced. Staff were still learing how to pull a pint but I think it was their first day! A proper country pub.

The Parrot Inn, Forest Green

A big old pub on a village green. Plenty of room inside and out. Nice pints of Ringwood and Youngs on. Food is a bit pretentious and rather expensive: all nouvelle cuisine and no chips. Could have usefully done with larger portions!

The Abinger Hatch, Abinger Common

Nice old pub with well kept Ringwood best & forty-niner on. Plenty of room for big groups. Decent food and quick service. Fairly impressive range of puddings too.

The William IV, Albury

A traditional country pub with classic toilets! A really nice spot to site outside in good weather. "Sheer drop" ale is very good indeed. Don't rate the steak and kidney pie though, pretty poor in fact. They seem to be building an extension (Dining room maybe?) at the back.

The Blue Ball, Walton On The Hill

I've eaten here twice recently. Suprised at how good the food was as the pub actually seems pretty gloomy. Beer well kept. Although the bar is quite roomy there's not really many places to sit and eat but there is a separate resturant area. But bring on the smoking ban!

The Dolphin, Betchworth

Always enjoy eating here. Good pint of youngs on. Food reasonable and the chef even came round and told us how he cooked it all.

The Kingfisher, Chertsey

Big roomy pub, lots of room for groups. Decent pint of London pride. Food pretty good and very cheap.

The Well House Inn, Mugswell

Visited this pub today with a group of walkers. Really nice place, plenty of room, real fire: a traditional English country pub. Good, cheap food with huge portions. Nice pint of Adnams on and I'm told the London pride was pretty good too. Well worth a visit.

The Dorset Arms, Withyham Hartfield

Visited this pub yesterday with a group of walkers. Nice pint of Harveys and good cheap food. Bar area has a proper log fire but is pretty small: with 14 people we pretty much packed it out. There's quite a large resturant area as well but all tables in there were reserved. Nice place, maybe a good idea to book if you want to be sure of a table.

The Chequers, Forest Row

Visited this pub with a group of walkers. Decent pints of Harveys and London Pride on offer. Food OK, not great, but served very quickly (Sunday menu: roast dinners only). Staff seemed pretty efficient but the place wasn't particularly busy.

The Fox and Hounds, Walton On The Hill

This nice old pub has been turned into a trendy wine bar. Went there at last weekend with a bunch of ramblers: we were like fish-out-of-water. London pride still good though and food was cheap and excellent. But not a place for me anymore. Shame.
