First visited this pub in about 1970 and became a regular. It was then probably the best pub in the area - in the mid 70’s I think it came 2nd in the London Evening Standard pub awards. In my opinion it started to decline in the early 1990’s when the brewery decided to update it and put in a manager – the warm and friendly atmosphere never returned. I continued to visit occasionally until a couple of years ago when the service behind the bar deteriorated even further. I heard recently that the management had changed again last year so decided today to pop in for a pint – big mistake. The pub was busy but the service I received from the woman that served me was appalling. No welcome, no smile no please or thank you and my change was thrust into my hand while she spoke to another customer. I shan’t be going back – very sad to see what was once a great pub go this way.

Comment: Nice beer and a really nice pub sort of out of the way but a great place to stop if you are driving between Purley and Caterham on the Hill. (Long drive and that 3 miles can really take it out of you). Although you are really in an urban area you feel like you are in the middle of nowhere. I hear (and saw) that the food is really great if thats what you use a pub for but personally the beer does it for me.

Sad to see Brian (the manager) go. He kept a good pint of Cask ale and a good pub. By the way, the previous comment is wrong as the person obviously doesn't know who ran the business (Brian must've been cooking in the kitchen at the time of her visit). I feel that Stonegate have done him an injustice, but who am I to tell the people that "know how to run pubs" how they conduct their business. He was very hard working and when he did get a chance to talk to the customers would usually be very funny. I understand that he was sacked due to standards, maybe stonegate should invest in the Wattenden so standards then could be improved and take an initial hit on the wages to allow any manager coming in to manage instead of cooking, cleaning, admin, ordering and anything else that Brian did to keep the Wattenden trading. All the best for the future Brian and I hope that you get employed with a company that actually cares about their employees instead of just profit!!!!!!

The woman who 'runs' this dive of a pub is to be avoided at all costs - on a Sunday in any event. One of the attractions for us is that after an embracing walk on Kenley airfield, they serve cheese and biscuits, which fellow reviewer, you may think - "how nice, what a refreshing change, you don't get that much these days..." But buyer beware - it comes at a price. When ordering your round, especially when regarded as 'an outsider', you will get harried into, 'yes, anything else, anything else...?' as if the pub is packed, and they are rushing to serve other people, when there are in fact only 6 people in the entire place at 1205..... That, accompanied by the extras from 'Deliverance', that 'populate' the bar area in a very successful menacing way, makes this place a real charmer.

In addition, having survived the drinks order interrogation from the Harpee behind the bar, you notice the rest of the surly and untrained excessive amount of staff tucking into the patrons cheese and biscuits on the bar, and I kid you not, discussing the merits, or otherwise, of the punters they have just served!

However, I refuse to give into the old Trout, and her sub human subordinates, and keep tucking into the nibbles!

I only went to this pub to see the woman with a giant malteaser for a head (as seen in the photo above) ... and she wasn't even there!!
