The Woodpecker, Cowplain

completely agree with "outtamehead", have known pub for many years and used on odd occasion, not so appealing from the road, but the place is well designed and obviously fairly recently redecorated. two beers on draught as stated before. the butcombe was in perfect condition and served by a very friendly young girl. pub was relatively well supported fro early evening drinkers while the car park was empty so serving its local clientele well i guess. didnt stop for food but on the basis christmas day is already fully booked at 45ph i am guessing its not bad. will use again, shame they cant invest in kerb appeal

The Cricketers, Turgis Green

closed. no surprise

The Churchillian, Portsmouth

visited few weeks ago late lunch time. food was passable but not worth the high prices. seems like the view is worth an extra 2 a plate here. beer and selection ok. staff not particularly attentive but as suggested its a tourist buzz here.

Spotted Cow, Cowplain

visited on many occasion over past few months, beer always good, red fox being a favourite. landlord and staff know exactly what they are up to and friendly. live music, pool and darts plus the standard large screen tv and football. a warm welcome for anyone seems to be the motto here and as such will keep my custom when in area.

The Winchester Arms, Portsmouth

certainly not the pub it used to be, but looked relatively supported by a handful of regulars at the weekend. beer was good but in general seemed to have transported me back in time according to the decor. landlord could do a lot more to generate the trade in this densely populated area.

George & Dragon, Portsmouth

having known the pub for many years we popped in late last weekend, found the place to be clean, tidy and very presentable. bar man (possibly dutch) was friendly and polite. beer good, trouble free but particularly quiet for 10pm on a friday evening. would happily go back next time in area.

The Plough Inn, Badbury

have now revisted several times and what a difference when the manager is not around, food almost out of a different kitchen and staff are more interested in talking in the bar than serving. shame as when its good its good. did we just get a good night?

The Plough Inn, Badbury

Fantastic little pub, good honest food at very sensible prices. Wine menu simple but effective, service friendly and punctual. Warm, cosy and definately worth a return visit.

George and Falcon, Warnford

I believe was taken on and modernised in early 2009 by Marstons, few real ales and ciders from the barrel behind the bar - ok. Very large and open plan interior with many new furnishings. Staff polite but not exciting! We tried the ploughmans on our visit which was most disappointing and particularly over priced.

The Crown Hotel, Blandford Forum

Hotel nice and accommodating, staff friendly and welcoming. Food ok, beer needs a lot of attention, flat, tastless and out of condition.

Coach and Horses, Portsmouth

Visited last week, walked in to be told kitchen had issues and thus no food for half an hour. Several other tables in so we decided to stay and wait. It seemed that every member of staff was brand new on the day as many stated they had no idea of what they were doing and that it was their first day so please bear with them. We did and had a medicore meal. At the end of the day its cheap and cheerful microwave food.

Cant comment on beer as only had a bottle of wine - although we did wait half an hour for it to be opened and only then when I fetched a bottle opener from the car as they couldnt find theirs.

Could have been a lot better but with inadequate staff training, "issues in the kitchen" and no bottle openers it is really the responsibility of the owners to sort this place out!

The White Horse Inn, Priors Dean

here here "gelboy", for all the pubs trying hard in these difficult times lets hope the current landlady takes some notice and closes her doors. the beer may be good and the summer events obviously have following but this pub just needs tlc and yet it gets ignorance from its current management. rudeness, overpriced and poor quality meals wont keep this pub going for long

Black Dog Inn, Waltham Chase

Oh dear, visited this pub a lot many years ago and returned last night for a meal. The pub istelf is looking tired and worn, the car park badly lit, radio 4 on in the bakcground, chairs piled up in the doorway. Of the 7 staff that were on duty no-one offered any form of service, in fact the ladlady had to find a member of staff just to take a drinks order. The food bland, tasteless and resembled very bad hospital food 20 years ago! Cold plates with a pot of gravy with three chunks of meat was the idea of a pie, over cooked vegetables that had obviously come from the freezer. Starters were just as appalling taking almost 5 minutes to serve 4 plates & cold toast. Everything had been bought in on this menu and the only homemade dish (the pie) showed the culinary success of a school child in home ec! Overall a terrible experience, my only hope is that this pub is one of the many due to close this week as the trade continues to lose out to supermarket giants.

Oh dear oh dear - ale ok, service and attitude of staff appalling, food no better than cafe in town but at three times the cost. Local food does it for me but a Taste of Hampshire plate at 12 thats got to be special - thin slice of smoked salmon (hampshire??), cooked cold smoked duck slice, cheddar stithers and pineapple relish, all in very small quantities, ok as a starter but billed as main course! Loved the charm of the building, but why oh why do these olde worlde buildings never get cleaned properly - cobwebs dont add charm especially in a food environment. Wont get a return visit. Will try the trooper next time in the area.

The Thomas Lord, West Meon

Apparently this pub has won just about every award under the sun - how I really dont understand, we visited on quiet monday night and were the only ones in the building. the meal was mediocre at best and took an hour to arrive meatballs and burger. Needless to suggest we didnt order anything else. Even the bill took half hour to arrive. Butcombe ale was however super! As per previous comments this pub really does need a tidy and refresh paint in some places, there is olde world and there is tired! Liked the idea of a all local menu but someone needs to offer this place a little more TLC before its worth of a return visit.

The Rose and Crown, Upper Farringdon

visited a few times now, beer always in excellent condition and the place has had a much needed over haul in last few months, although not particularly now inkeeping with its location with somewhat random sways of cloth and novelties. Landlady very friendly but wont take criticism, be prepared to wait a long time if you are disappointed as we were with our meal.

The Hogget, Hook Common

ate last night for the first time, classy menu bit more of a restaurant than a pub especially with the prices. not the best value for money in the area would suggest using one of the smaller village pubs if you want that. beer remains well kept.

The Earle Arms, Heydon

Spent a week in Heydon last week and several evenings in the Earle Arms. The beer was fantastic on every visit (Adnams). Good selection of wines too. Food (we ate twice) was good and even appealing to my four yr old! Very cosy pub in a excellent location, roaring fires, very friendly staff. Will definately come back when nest nr Norwich!

The Cricketers, Turgis Green

not really a pub anymore, a restaurant with high hopes. we visted a couple of weeks ago, poor value for money, waited ages and had to site next to a very smelly chimney. staff were attentive but at the quality and cost i wont go back. if im going to spend that money i would rather visit tylney hall or go to london

30 Nov 2008 17:36

The Leather Bottle, Hook

like the refurbished hogget a place designed to eat and thus not really a pub any longer in the true fashion. nevertheless drink in here some lunch times and always found the place to serve a good pint, london pride this week! will keep coming back to the see the friendly faces, wouldnt use in the evening as i guess a bit too busy for the drinker

30 Nov 2008 17:12

The Hogget, Hook Common

drunk in here a few times since the refurb, always had a good pint - look forward to seeing what the guest beer is when we do return. staff reasonably friendly although get the feeling drinkers are not really required!

30 Nov 2008 17:09

The Kings Head, Wickham

ok run of the mill pub, recent change in owners under the new fullers regime, well kitted out after its refurb, good "pub menu" that was reasonable, busy for a monday evening, used to live very close hence return visit, will be back. Heard good reviews of sunday lunch - a must try at some point

30 Nov 2008 17:06

Slug and Lettuce, Bournemouth

if you want a laugh pop in when the area manager is doing his audit - we did yesterday! what we presume was the manager walking around chewing gum in a tracksuit!! (do they still make them?) the place had staff everywhere but not many customers. quick bottle with fresh slime and we were off. comical value 10 pub 2

2 Oct 2008 22:59

Yates's, Bournemouth

a better than average pub in the local area. bar staff friendly, shame to see the place empty but guess probably fills in the evening. any place that serves from plastic gives me the impression there is trouble ahead. didnt fancy the steps up into the place, ok for lunch but wouldt use in the evening

2 Oct 2008 22:56

Walkabout, Bournemouth

souless place - serves from plastic glasses - this isnt a pub. steer clear

2 Oct 2008 22:54

O'Neills, Bournemouth

boring - another cheap, cant be arsed attitude pub, plenty of other good drinking holes in bournemouth

2 Oct 2008 22:53

Bar Vin, Bournemouth

very friendly bar staff, a decent pint served well. very quiet for a wednesday in general. lacks character, somewhat like a dark airport lounge. didnt eat but from the chaps next to us the food looked very good value for money.

2 Oct 2008 22:52

The Inferno, Bournemouth

Agree with chopin - awful place - cant believe places like this still exist - lager tasted like cider shandy!

2 Oct 2008 22:48

Goat and Tricycle, Bournemouth

Visited last night after a local tip off, of all the pubs in the area this is the best by a very long shot. A very rare find set just off from the main high street. 13 real ales very well kept, food is fairly priced and of very high standard - try the home made pork pie! Friendly bar persons who provided plenty of entertainment. Appeals to all ages. Will definately be back.
