The Plough, Pyecombe

We've been to the Plough in the evenings several times over the last couple of years with another couple and really enjoyed the meals on the main menu, with excellent service and prices to match the quality of the food. On a recent evening visit we were shown the "Bar Menu" which looked just right for lunchtime. We therefore went there for lunch with several friends after a local walk. Big mistake - Only 2 of our group enjoyed their meal. The rest were definitely not at all happy. The gammon steaks were like rubber as was the tough substance in the so-called chicken pie. Least said the better for the lasagne. To top it all - when we commented on the stone cold plates, the waiter made a joke of it. By this time were not in the mood for jokes - Never again!!

The Country Inn, Bepton

What a pleasant lunch time experience. We all greatly enjoyed the food and the Doombar was well looked after. We will return.

The Bulls Head, West Clandon

We dropped by at lunch time today and were treated to a mixed grill to die for. Enjoyed an excellent couple of pints of Doombar to wash it down. Friendly staff and very reasonable prices completed our enjoyment.

Sussex Potter, North Lancing

Our experiences have obviously been very different to the last 2 reviews. We've been to The Sussex Potter 5 or 6 times in the last year, and have been very satisfied with the service, the food and the drinks. Yes it's a steak house - like it says on the label. However, we reckon they serve the best steaks for many miles around. They also have plenty of other main dishes if you don't fancy a piece of dead steer. Their day time fixed price menu is good value too - 8 oz rump steak for 8.95 & deserts at 2. Yes, the beers are limited but we couldn't fault the Harveys.

The Six Bells, Chiddingly

Well - the previous entries say it all. What a gem. We have sampled the fare twice in the last 2 weeks at lunchtime and couldn't wish for more. The service is friendly, the food very satisfying and the beer exceedingly well kept. We will return for more in the near future.

The Half Moon Inn, Balcombe

The previous 4 reviews really say it all. Our group of 9 dropped in for lunch today after a very pleasant walk and really enjoyed our visit. The proper pub grub was just the job and the Harvey's bitter was perfection in a glass. The food took a while to arrive but was well worth it. It makes a pleasant change to find an unspoilt village pub like this which has not been turned into a pretentious gastro pub.

The Chalk Pit Inn, Lewes

This is one of our favourites. Friendly staff, good atmosphere, good menu.

The Rising Sun, Moseley Green

Chose the rising Sun from BITE whilst on a walking holiday with friends. Apparently the place has recently changed management. Felt very welcome, with great menu choices and well cooked food (I've never seen a pile of chips this big before!).

The Old Ship, Ringmer

We've been there 3 or 4 times in the last year or so and have enjoyed our visit every time. The food is excellent and well presented with a wide range on the menu. The service was good as was the Harveys. Well worth dropping in.

The Swan Inn, Falmer

I've just read in the Argus that the new licencees who inherited the pub are going to throw the pub open to football fans on home match days. If this is true, dear old John will be turning in his grave. OK they want to make a fast buck, but what a kick in the teeth for John!

The Horns Lodge, South Chailey

Good food, good choice of proper beers, friendly service. Isn't it nice to feel welcome these days. What more could we ask?

The Royal Oak, Barcombe

Been here twice lately. Once for a very welcome pint after a walk on warm day & more recently for an evening meal with friends. Really pleasant service and well cooked and served meals. This is what village pubs should be.

The Wheatsheaf, Plummers Plain

What a great pub! 15 of us rolled up there unannounced lunchtime on Wednesday after a pleasant walk in the area to a very friendly welcome. Our meals were superb and served up in very speedily. We will return! If only to meet again Smirnoff the african grey parrot who resides in and around his cage (with the door open of course) at the end of the bar. What a character!

The Royal Oak, Wineham

Having read the very positive comments for this pub, we went for a pleasant walk in the area and got back to the pub just before 12 intending to have lunch there. When I asked for the menu, I was told that it was not ready as they produce a new menu every day after discussion between the management and the chef. The landlord said it would be ready "in ten". After sitting in the garden for a while with our drinks for well over ten minutes, my wife went back to the bar to ask again for a menu. After having been ignored at the bar for quite a while, my wife eventually got the attention of a member of the staff only to be told that the menus still had not yet available. We decided to cut our losses at this point and find a pub that actually wanted our custom. Perhaps we picked a bad day?

The Preston Park Tavern, Brighton

Definitely not for us. We went there for lunch and ordered the beef roast. Unfortunately we didn't enjoy the experience. The beef was tough. The vegetables were seriously undercooked & I needed the serrated edge knife to cut into the roast potatoes. The staff were very pleasant and efficient, but the food really let them down. Such a pity.

The Queens Head, West Chiltington

Just enjoyed an excellent Sunday roast washed down with a couple of well-conditioned pints of Harveys. The new landlord & landlady are very pleasant and attentive and our compliments to the chef. We will be back.
