Great place to go for a quiet drink. Menu isn't really up to much if you want anything more than sandwiches. Very opinionated landlord, John - pick topics of conversation carefully! (Don't mention the Falmer Stadium!)

No Harvey's (landlord dispute with the brewery) but a very good regular selection of other beers.

old fashioned surroundings (one half pink flower curtains, the other half old wooden beams and benches), neon paper signs (90% about not smoking), the place could do with updating. But clean.

But this shouldn't let you put you off. For lunch, sandwiches are good (especially ham/gammon and salmon), so are the jacket potatoes. Good choice of beer (mainly German). good patio in a lovely old village (with the A27 running through the middle!)

Not somewhere to go for dinner or a good night out, but great for a lunch. Next to two unis, could do much more business if they tried.

I first went in this place nearly 30 years back and then it was a real student's pub. These days there are better bars on campus. Not what I would call a village pub - the decor is a bit bland and I'm told the food isn't up to much. My pint of London Pride was shot so full of CO2 that I'm convinced this place is a major contributor to global warming. I give it another 30 years and then try it again.

The Swan Inn has about 2,500 students living on its doorstep and still it closes in the afternoon. Although obviously not an astute businessman, the owner certainly knows how to maintain a traditional country pub. The ales are always of a great quality and the food is typical pub fare. The staff seem pleasant enough if a little slow at serving customers.
