The Green Man, Great Offley

Me, my boyfriend, and my parents went to The Green Man on 23rd January and it wasn't as good as it used to be. They had no pate so my boyfriend and I had to have the mushroom rarebit thing for starters which the waitress called mushroom bruschetta. It was quite nice but my boyfriend thought it could have done with more mushrooms. We had a chicken and chorizo thing for our main course and I wondered if it would be spicy. That was a joke as it was a pretty bland dish my boyfriend called "average". I couldn't taste any chorizo or paprika in it. The waitress bought my Dad the wrong dish so he had to wait (he didn't have a starter) while the rest of us ate and when he did get the red snapper he said it was terrible and a bit of the fish was manky. The lighting in the conservatory was bad and my Mum and Dad couldn't see the menus properly. My dessert the chocolate parfait was nice and my Dad's dessert was nice (school sponge) and my Mum had no problems with her tomato bruschetta and fish pie. My Dad was offered a drink while he was waiting for his dinner though I can't remember if it was free. I wasn't offered a discount on my dessert even though I didn't have the black cherries or cream, wish I had asked for one but I'm too much of a wimp.

Buck Wilds, Luton

This place is now closed and is the Green Room now.

The Brache, Luton

Went here with friends in July and again the main course was a disappointment but the starters and dessert were really nice.

Bar Me, Luton

I do apologise for my previous comment if the staff were legally employed.

The Round Green Tavern, Luton

This pub is OK - clean enough and the people in there are non threatening. Only been there 2 or 3 times since there is nothing to make me want to go back. The Topers is just a little bit nicer and they do food.

The Royal Oak, Luton

This pub has been closed for a while now, the landlord basically did a runner.

The Jolly Topers, Luton

They have extended the hours food is available, I'd still say this is a good pub but nothing special.

The Bricklayers Arms, Luton

Only been in here for the quiz night and even though me and my work colleagues shook things up taking the regulars tables the quiz master and other bar staff have always been friendly. Good atmosphere, well organised quiz and homely interior.

The Brewery Tap, Luton

Had food in here recently and it's OK, you get what you pay for so good value.

The White House, Luton

I used to like it more before it became a Lloyds when it was just a normal Whetherspoons. Recently my friend got falsely accused of not paying for her drinks and got some free vouchers after complaining to head office but they should never have made her pay twice. So much for the customer is always right. The food is pretty rubbish now whereas before me and my boyfriend used to go there to eat regularly. It's still OK for a midweek drink (face it we haven't got much choice in Luton) but I'd avoid it at the weekends. My friend said she got charged a quid to get in a couple of weeks ago on a Friday night.

The Old Moat House, Limbury

My friend and I went here a couple of weeks ago and the carvery food was gorgeous. Everything was fresh and cooked well and the roast potatoes were almost overcooked which is how I like them. I also had some chocolate "melt" cake which I couldn't fault for 2. The atmosphere was homely and my friend and I didn't feel rushed at all. I recommend it to families and friends and couples wanting a quiet evening/meal out.

The King William IV, Cockernhoe

Went here once for lunch with work and it was very nice. Food was well done and the interior was nice and traditional.

The Green Man, Great Offley

Whenever I've been here the food has been gorgeous and ready quickly. Had a nice roast beef and yorkshire pudding and a gorgeous pate followed by stilton and leek pie another time. Scrumptious.

Yates's, Luton

Typical Yates - part of a chain. OK but nothing to entice you to go on a regular basis.

The White House, Luton

Typical Wetherspoons. Quite nice for weeknights and the food is OK - available till quite late too. Wouldn't go there on Friday or Saturday nights though as it's too busy. Has non smoking sections and the upstairs seating area is good for people watching. Was better before they started playing music which is usually crap.

Warden, Luton

Just like any other Beefeater really. Harmless enough.

20 Mar 2006 14:04

Buck Wilds, Luton

Closed at the moment. Been in there a couple of times and it was OK. Had a couple of fun nights there with people I worked with.

20 Mar 2006 14:02

Red Red Red, Luton

Had a couple of Asian friends who used to like going here as it's a bit of an "Asian" hang out - well it was. Used to have funky cow patterened seats too. Toilets are a bit of a pain to get up to since they are upstairs but otherwise this place is OK.

Park, Luton

Used to go here all the time when I was a student. Is part of the "It's a scream" chain and if you are a student you can get a Yellow Card which entitles you to cheaper drinks depending on what you buy. Was very student-ish and then turned into a hang out for the goths/alternative crowd. Nice enough atmosphere though the toilets are a bit manky.

The Painters Arms, Luton

Been here twice - once on New Years Eve which was a laugh. Traditional Irish pub - smoky and tatty looking but nice enough. Can be a bit of a "regulars" pub but its usually a friendly place for outsiders too.

20 Mar 2006 13:57

The Exchange, Luton

It's called "The Exchange" now and like when it was the Newt is mainly for teeny boppers. Decor is the usual Luton red and beige.

20 Mar 2006 13:56

The Jolly Topers, Luton

Nice traditional pub. The food is nice, the atmosphere is friendly and the crowd is mixed both young and old. Don't recommend it for New Years Eve as went once and they didn't do anything special. But this pub is great for a Saturday night or weeknight. The food is tasty (though shame they don't offer it for longer hours) and you can usually get a seat.

20 Mar 2006 13:54

The Hungry Horse, Luton

Went here once for a Christmas do. Our idiot deputy had ordered our Christmas dinner to go to the Dunstable Hungry Horse so we ended up ordering off the regular menu. It was pretty crap.

20 Mar 2006 13:52

The Great Northern, Luton

Like someones living room. Only went in there once and they all looked at us - it was weird. My boyfriend liked the cup holders but this pub is definitely for the old regulars and not youngsters like myself.

20 Mar 2006 13:51

The Globe, Luton

Been in here once with work to play darts and it's a nice little traditional pub. Had a toasted sandwich which was nice and everyone elses food looked nice and it was cheap!

20 Mar 2006 13:49

The George II, Luton

I thought this pub was smoky and a bit of a dive but only been there once. There was a band in there murdering "Ain't no sunshine" so we only stayed for one drink. Probably all right for the rough old men who were in there.

20 Mar 2006 13:48

Castle Tavern, Luton

A more traditional pub - a bit smoky and like stepping back in time but the atmosphere is nice. There is one toilet lock in the ladies that has been broken for years which they should really get fixed. Other than that is a nice crowd that goes in there - rockers on a Saturday and you can usually get a seat.

20 Mar 2006 13:44

Brookes, Luton

Nice enough place with nice enough atmosphere. Has the same red/beige decor as most pubs/bars in Luton. A bar rather than a traditional pub. The non smoking section only has two areas to sit in and was deserted when I went there on Saturday. Everyone was crammed around the bar. My friend said it was a nice enough B&B as well when she stayed there. The food was pretty nice when I went there with a friend for lunch - better than The Whitehouse.

20 Mar 2006 13:42

The Brewery Tap, Luton

We used to go in here because it has a nice enough atmosphere and you can get a seat. Also the music was OK. Now the music is a bit dancy and it can get quite crowded at times. Also sometimes seems like there is a lot more men in there than women - so good for women on the pull I guess. Mixed crowd - some oldies and young people together. The garden is really nice in summer. The food used to be good but has gone downhill a bit. Would definitely recommend it in summer though. Still go there now since it is one of the nicer and less teeny bopper pubs.

20 Mar 2006 13:38

Brannigans, Luton

Yep its shut. When it was open it was OK - bit more disco-ey like Chicagoes. My friend danced with a scary man there who wouldn't leave her alone so she and her friend left.

20 Mar 2006 13:35

The Brache, Luton

The food in The Brache is OK but me and my boyfriend only tend to go there if we have a money off voucher. The deep fried mushrooms and desserts are nice but for the main course you should stick with steak. Never been in the bar but it looks nice enough I guess.
