please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

A local pub for local people. Okay in it's way but wasn't impressed with the Dartmoor Jail ale - mustn't travel well from the West Country.

Addlestones cider. Prices typical of the district. Nice garden.
jgurney1 - 8 Apr 2015 14:53
Can't fault it, great food (French chef). Great selection of reasonably priced beers wines and cider. Fantastic, cosy village pub atmosphere. Nice, friendly, welcoming staff (as opposed to the previous tenants). Very clean, we'll run establishment and not before time. Quite frankly the best pub in the area, very glad to have become a regular once again.

The most amazing roast dinner, definitely worth a visit!!! I've heard the ribs are good, as well as the Cajun chicken, so I will be back there without hesitation to sample! Has a lovely family feel and everyone is friendly, polite and very welcoming.
Duly1980 - 27 Jun 2013 16:41
Me and my wife have started to use this pub as our regular. The landlady and the staff are always friendly and welcoming and always go the extra mile to please everyone. Unlike other pubs nowadays which are cold and have no sense of familiarity, the plough is warm and cosy and has a real sense of community which you don't often get now.

The food is good quality and for a reasonable price as well! I would definitely recommend the Sunday Roast! The garden out back is well kept and great on a sunny day.

The pub is dog and children friendly which is great when we want to stop for a bite when walking our dog. Overall the new managment is just what that pub needed, Me and my wife have been walking past it for years until now and are glad for the change!
Pub100 - 23 Jun 2013 12:43
Thought this was a lovely pub. Well kept beer and friendly staff. We didn't have any food but selection looked reasonable and priced the same as most comparable Woking pubs.

Seeing as all the negative reviews were posted roughly the same time, and the reviewers have no other history of pub reviews, I would suggest that they are not happy with the new management and the changes that they may or may not made. These people are probably now spending there £8 budget in Wetherspoons on an evening.

So don't be put put off and give the pub a go. You may be pleasantly surprised.
franky666 - 27 Feb 2013 14:41
Under New Management, Bring back the old i say, The beer has gone down hill, the food, Foods over priced and not up to much, The staff aren't great either, John is still there! The Management are loud and cocky. What have they got to be cocky about they have wrecked the pub. Its not friendly or welcoming we won't go back.
walkingaround - 22 Feb 2013 12:40
The Plough under new management what a disaster. My family and friends have been going there for years. The beer is not good, i ordered a pint of real ale and it was on the turn and i was told there was nothing wrong with it, The food was over priced and tasteless again when we complained the responce was no one else has said anything. The Staff are rude, unhelpful and lack of knowledge as to what they serve. John the bar is still there (when he is not in the cellar, What does he do in there?) Jack and Clare have bailed out to. The Management are loud, brassy and only interested in there mates not the good old loyal locals. H didn't smile alot but that was him it was fun trying to get him to crack a smile, Jillie what a cook her food was fab, whe was always bubbly and fun and went out of her way to make sure you had exactly what you wanted. The Plough was cosy, warm and friendly. If you like cold, rude staff and rubbish service run of the mill food and beer served on the turn then thats the place for you. My family and friends will not go back even though it's on my door step.
PUBMATE - 3 Feb 2013 08:50
well rdv last of the big spenders ? lol
The improvements to this pub are there for all to see, not having pies on the menu is insignificant compared to fact this place is now clean, and welcoming, void of the instructional blackboards and cctv everywhere, miserable landlord and wife. The smell of the kitchen in the bar has gone too. The beer seems better than it was and the menu now varies from day to day, with a chef in the kitchen, not a pie making machine, all in all a great improvement all round, well done , keep it up

The pub has recently changed hands, and unfortunately the excellent pies provided by the previous licensees are off the menu.

I visited with my wife for Sunday lunch and we chose the roast beef, which was a good - if standard - pub meal.

What let this visit down was the service, which included a barmaid asking me if Budweiser Budvar is the same as, "normal Budweiser". Fortunately the 6X and the Budvar (served as two halves due to excessive head!) were in excellent condition.

As we were finishing our meal and drinks (and the pub was filling up with lunch latecomers) , the landlady came across to our table and informed us that we had to move as she had apparently told us that our table was reserved. There were three set and reserved tables but ours was not one of them, and the the only thing the landlady had previously spoken to us about was what we'd like to eat! It should be pointed out that our table had not been set and there were no signs indicating a reservation.

We said that we were not aware of a reservation and drank up and left. Unfortunately The Plough has lost two customers as we spent £28 and were then rushed to move elsewhere; and the food is now very similar to that of other establishments who value their customers.

Drinks: good condition.
Food: good.
Service: disappointing.

Visited this Pub several times recently. What a smashing place, I wish I lived much closer. Dogs welcome in the Bar but not in the garden, which suits me well.
LuvPubs - 12 Jan 2011 11:52
Location and Beer excellent, manager not so good
5stardrunk - 18 Sep 2010 20:41
Can't agree more with all the other reviews - been there several times now after stumbling across the place by accident. Great food, good location & atmosphere - nice to see nowadays - cheers
nogs - 12 Jan 2010 13:26
I believe the food is great in this pub but I didn't eat so can't comment on that, maybe next time! A really nice local type pub, friendly bar staff, good location and cosy child friendly garden. A good selection of ales, though seemed a bit pricey; 3 for a pint of Deuchars which is 2.20 a pint at the Sovereigns in Woking town centre.
sidjtu - 19 Mar 2009 16:55
Great Traditional Friendly Pub. Great selection or Real Ales and lagers, lovely pint, wide selection of everything on all drinks. The Food Home cooked and lovely. Love the setting, Warm and cosy but i will look forward to those long summer evenings when you can take it all in
JaneFor - 5 Mar 2009 09:37
We saw the write up in the local paper about the nonination for the Steak & Stilton Pie. Thought we'd give it a go. It was delicious, nice to have home cooking, for a change in a traditional English pub with a great selection of Real Ales and Lagers. The pub is well worth a visit Friendly and homely. There are not many of these pubs left. Jillie you should be aiming high with your pies they are amazing we will be back.

Only sugestion to others certainly book at weekends to avoid disapointment this pub is definately worth a visit
alanheart - 10 Feb 2009 09:50

Very Plesant Visit to The Plough recently. My Husband and i had a lovely meal the range of Ales was great for him and as i was the driver the extensive range of soft drinks was good for me. Lovely setting and good friendlyservice. Good place to take the family. The secure garden will be nice in the summer for the children. certainly will be back.

I am NOT a relative , owner or anything else just satified customer

Fizzyhead & Blondecosmogirl33 please make yourself known to the Landlord
LandLordPH - 20 Dec 2008 13:43
> Fizzyhead you go back 4-5 times they must be doing something right

No, they aren't! The pub is very convenient on a pleasant bike ride for us across the common. They can get it wrong a couple of times (everyone has bad days) but every time I've been there, the food has been crap. Urquell has only ever reviewed this pub so readers should be highly suspicious this is the miserable landlord defending his below average fare.

Somebody else, please do try the food and let us know what you think!
Fizzyhead - 13 Nov 2008 14:02
Urquell, in case it had completely gone over your head this is a REVIEW site, therefore, I have given my REVIEW. You either clearly need to get out and about and experience new pubs - or you're related to the miserable landlord!! As for being more adventurous - I'm glad we didn't "risk" anything more adventurous if they can't even get a baguette & jacket potato right!!!
blondecosmogirl33 - 28 Oct 2008 20:20
Careful, Urquell. Any more comments in favour of this pub and you're likely to be reckoned to be a co-owner along with me! ;-)

Glad to see someone with taste standing up for a decent pub.
RobMcC - 24 Oct 2008 00:19
Fizzyhead & Blondcosmogirl stay at home you would make the milk turn sour
Urquell - 20 Oct 2008 18:26
I couldn't wait for next week i've just been back to The Plough for another pie I walked in to the wonderful smell of home cooking Surrey Lamb and Kidney Pie and my husband had the home cooked ham egg & Chips wonderful again Fizzyhead you go back 4-5 times they must be doing something right & Cosmogirl33 you should be more adventurous. The food is fab. If the landlord is looking miserable it must be you bad eggs doing it, Because both the landlord and landlady are always very polite and helpful.
Urquell - 20 Oct 2008 14:33
I seen the review and had to visit The Plough The Previous views were unfounded My Family found it warm inviting The Selection of beers, Real Ale, Whiskys, Every Soft Drink imaginable.

They Catered for all our needs and whims with personal service . Not a bog standard Chips & Peas you were given every selectionof potatoes Veg and salad in any combination, there was something for everyone.

Large Portions and great to have that home cooked food.

The selection of real ales tantalised those taste buds and the rabbit pie left me well satisfied. Although i could just couldn't resist a slice of the Fruity Bottom Cake.

The whole family had a fantastic time and the sevice next to none. Thank you.

The only problem is finding it. If you Sat NAV put in South Road Horsell and get to the edge of the common and you can't miss it. CHeapside is a rabbit warren no wonder there catching them. See you next weekend
Urquell - 19 Oct 2008 22:50
What a shame! A recent discovery, on first impressions, the Plough is ideal. There is a selection of good beers (varies) and a huge menu .. but, the food is so disappointing! A sign by the door implies the food is worth waiting for. It's not!!! We've eaten at the Plough 4-5 times now and every time has been a let down so it's now off our "places to eat" list. The "home made" pies are not much to write about, the meat content tiny diced pieces. The burger I had last weekend was simply disgusting, like a cheap burger van. The chips undercooked and from a freezer, not "home made".

The landlord is fairly miserable too and our request to turn either the plasma TV or the music down (both blaring away in competition) was met with a moan despite there being no-one in the room except an old regular propping up the bar.

The music choice is fairly depressing too, reminding me of the Harry Enfield "Smashy & Nicey" scene where his wife left him.

The beer was well kept and we'll still stop by for a refreshing pint when we pass but it's off my list of destinations to grab a pub meal. There is a sign just inside the kitchen door says "no bar staff allowed in kitchen". Perhaps the landlord should let one in as an experiment, they may be able to prepare some half decent grub!

Fizzyhead - 23 Sep 2008 07:22
Easily missed pub on the edge of the common. Always makes an effort with the real ale. Food is overpriced for what you get, although a great range of pies. Has free wi-fi apparently
fatcats - 20 Jul 2008 15:21
I went to this pub today for lunch for the first time after reading good reviews about it. I have to say after having high hopes for this pub - good selection of guest ales, homemade food etc - both myself and my husband were thoroughly disappointed! We went on a Wednesday lunch time and, including myself and husband, there were only about 4 people in the pub. We ordered a jacket potatto with chilli and a BLT baguette - really not a difficlt order especially bearing in mind how quiet the pub was! The jacket potato was OK but the baguette had magicly become a sandwich. We accepted the fact that it could have just been human error, but when my husband started to eat it, it went from bad to worse!! The bread was soggy and wet, there was no L in the BLT ie it was a bacon and tomoto sandwich with lettuce on the side! and the crisps that were supposed to on the side was actually a very undercooked new potato!!! To make matters worse we went to pay and the landlord quite happily took our money without even so much as a "was everything OK?" or "how was your meal?" Clearly they knew exactly what we were going to say!!! To summarise:- good selection of beers, but below average food and and grumpy old misery gut for a landlord who had no people skills!!!!

blondecosmogirl33 - 2 Jul 2008 14:43
You have live music? Have "Rhedd" ever played there cos you're right on my doorstep - I moved to Goldsworth Park in March and saw them at O'Neills - they were brilliant. Must visit for food - mixed reviews on here, but the pub looks good from the outside and seems to be good honest English grub. Excellent.
Tenacity - 30 Apr 2008 13:25
beers well kept but food was bland and boring, the bar staff have a cant be bothered attitude and I can only assume that RobMcC owns the boozer <g>
groggy - 1 Apr 2008 16:59
Always a different beer to try, usually in good/very good condition, only pub in village that welcomes dogs! Bar staff seem to change on a daily basis
anonymous - 8 Nov 2007 18:51
This Pub is warm and friendly It's award winning Cask Marque kept real ales are perfectly served and over 66 different single malt whiskies They have an extensive homemade menu which is for ever changing I.e Rabbit Pie,Lamb & Kidney Pie, Chicken & Apple Cheesebake to mention a few is a must for a return visit even vegetarians have a good range i noticed over 6 different varieties. Dog friendly. Live Music on the 1st Thursday of every month. This is a real good old English Pub and a good welcome to to newcomers & regulars The surroundings are beautiful and what a way to end a nice country walk with a good pint and a hearty meal well done and thanks To The Plough we will be back
Sal - 1 Mar 2007 00:12
Now a Wi-Fi hotspot as well as fantastic food and great company!
RobMcC - 3 Feb 2007 19:09
Snappy, what exactly do you mean by "characterless"? And considering the range of home-made pies and other fine dishes I don't think you could call it anything less than outstanding, but then we are all entitled to our own views. And they ARE home-made, but with demand so high combined with the variety of the menu of course they're going to be made beforehand and then microwaved. Otherwise you'd have to wait all day for your meal. May I suggest you go to a McDonalds in future?

(OK, yes, I am a bit biased as it is my local.)
RobMcC - 14 Sep 2006 14:55
Not too bad, a bit characterless, but nonetheless, the food was cheaper than usual, but not outstanding in anyway....not the kind of place I'd really enthuse about, or think about coming back to again. 4 out of 10
snappy - 28 Aug 2006 14:52
Very nice pub, good food, friendly atmosphere.
NormanSpoonBender - 17 Aug 2006 12:53
Had a pleasant hour and a half here yesterday evening in their back garden. Our young daughter enjoyed the playhouse and the slides.

The food was ok and there are lots of homemade dishes - albeit warmed up in the microwave. Real ale is available and that seemed to be ok too.

Will probably go back.
GrahamA - 9 Aug 2006 09:55
Went with six children under 8 and six adults for Sunday lunch and we were very well looked after. Children loved their (simple but cheap) lunch with added touches like ketchup faces and lollipops for finished plates. Adult Sunday lunch was well prepared, traditional food and very enjoyable.
Staff were kind and attentive.
Beers also very enjoyable.
Best experience in this area for this kind of occassion.
lsmithgo - 11 Jul 2006 21:15
Food is basic pub grub but okay. Real Ales are great, atmosphere clicky and pub is full of old boys with grumpy attitudes.
BoozyBoy - 11 Jul 2006 16:31
Now accredited with the Cask Marque for the excellent range and quality of its real ales. Good job, and well done to H and Jillie. Keep up the excellent work that your regulars enjoy.
RobMcC - 8 May 2006 19:55
A very friendly pub in Horsell.Food is great but, what makes this place is the atmosphere with the locals . . .
they make it that little bit better.
Well worth a visit. Good live music here as well.
scratch - 1 May 2006 19:11
Great friendly family pub located close to Horsell common serving excellent food and real ale (and loads of whskies. Dog friendly with a 42" plasma TV for special sporting events. Nice garden for those warm summer days.
websitespider - 13 Mar 2006 12:19
Easily the best pub in Woking. Very friendly atmosphere, good beer, good food, and quiz night every Wednesday. I've been drinking here since I was old enough to and can recommend it to anyone.
RobMcC - 23 Dec 2005 10:04
Much better than the Plough in Guildford. They sell Pilsner Urquell and Black Sheep ale here, two very good beers. Good place to eat as well
Will2 - 7 Feb 2005 13:30
Very comfortable pub out of the way. Garden lovely in the summer. Good range of beers.
Tyrone - 21 Aug 2003 15:33
I went to the Plough very regularly for ten years+++, until moving to Hungary. It was always a great place to go for a relaxe pint (or ten) and was always very friendly.
