The Chandos, Trafalgar Square

Despite its location, this place is comfortable, friendly and has a pleasing atmosphere, altho I've never been downstairs, 8/10

The Dog and Duck, Soho

This is a great little place, completely unpretenious and a great place to meet people due to the fact that it's so small. Staff are completely true, if they like you they like you if they dont they dont, which is how it should be, none of this 'customer-service-smile-at-everyone-wetherspoons' crap.
About Westminster Council - they are trying to shut down many pubs in this area because 'locals' are complaining, locals meaning rich people who want to live in this area but don't appreciate the area's vibe late at night. Unless it's a heavily regulated area most places won't stay open later and the dog n duck is not in the right area (altho it's very close). Not the pub's fault.
Go here any time of day, do what you want and be what you want. It's a much better experience if you have no hang-ups

The Marylebone, Marylebone

Great place, unfortunate that whenever football's on the untrained masses swarm there, but it's fairly easy to ignore them

The Northumberland Arms, Goodge Street

This is my favourite pub in London and I've been to a few. The staff are great - you can talk to them when you want and be on your own when you want. Not so great if you can't get a seat inside but the guiness is top notch and they do creme de menthe which for some reason I only want when I'm there. Great place if you have no hang ups

The Village Inn, Shaw

good for kids

Sun Inn, Lydiard Millicent

good garden and yokel-cider, small but has a very disturbingly 'local' feel

Walkabout, Swindon

it's a walkabout and very small compared to other ones at that, although does try to authentically australian but they are all whiners anyway, so what's the point. Good for live music true but full of indie-boys when it is

Shield and Dagger, Swindon

very very scary, full of pikies and chavs, avoid at all costs

The Victoria, Swindon

Recommended although I don't like it much as it's full of indie-kids with a-symetrical haircuts. The 90's are over god-damn it! Otherwise very good.

The Roaring Donkey, Swindon

Best pub in Swindon unpretentious, great juke box, backstreet, good beers, just wish my Dad wasn't in here so often. Otherwise top marks.

Riff's Bar, Swindon

I dunno, it is nice and small and staff are very friendly and beer is good and well-priced, but who needs tribute bands anyways?

Pattern Store Bar, Swindon

Tourist pub for a town without any tourists.

21 Nov 2004 15:49

O'Neills, Swindon

Good staff, good beer, nicely decorated and good food. Pretty average for an O'Neills but that isn't a bad thing.

21 Nov 2004 15:48

Longs, Swindon

Full of posers, the worst being the bar staff. Mainly over-priced but food is very good. Very mainstream. Pretentious to the point whereby it's uncomfortable to go in there if you don't look 'up-market Swindon', aka haven't spend a fortune on boring designer clothes rejected from London

21 Nov 2004 15:47

The Lava Lounge, Swindon

Alright for a few visits but you get the impression that it doesn't really know what it's trying to achieve. eg despite having a cool picture of The Jam on the wall a member of staff didn't know who they were. Retro is not cool. Cover bands are not cool. Lava is hot (not cool) and lounge bars are not cool. In summary, not cool.

The Jovial Monk, Swindon

Surburban pubs are always rubbish and this place makes no attempt to differentiate itself. But not bad for what it is.

21 Nov 2004 15:41

Groves Company Inn, Swindon

A Wetherspoons with a distinctly Wetherspoons crowd, well-below average and obviously catering for those caught short (of a few pennies)...scary at times

21 Nov 2004 15:40

The Glue Pot, Swindon

An old man's pub in the best possible sense, nice location, small and very friendly, great place to while away the long summer days and in most cases nights. Kudos.

21 Nov 2004 15:38

Broadwalk, Swindon

very averagely swindon

21 Nov 2004 15:35

The London Pub, Bloomsbury

Tourists anybody? Looks rubbish, is, as some of the punters would call it 'trash'

21 Nov 2004 15:33

The Marlborough Arms, Tottenham Court Road

I quite liked it when i lived round the corner but i can see why it's so disliked. I did find the staff quite friendly most of the time and it's nice to be able to sit out. Crap jukebox.

21 Nov 2004 15:32

The College Arms, Bloomsbury

Got a very eerie sense when I went in that a fight was about to break out between the students and the suits. Rude, uber-cool studenty staff who can't pour pints - stick to the union

21 Nov 2004 15:30

Point 101, Bloomsbury

Very boring, rich americans, soundtrack for 14 year old girls, distinctly average may be too generous

21 Nov 2004 15:28

The Grosvenor Arms, Mayfair

very hip old man-style pub, fantastic music and extremely friendly staff who's ability to have a good-time is contagious, great prices too. Highly recommended 10/10
