The Ealing Park Tavern, South Ealing

Can feel a bit dead inside, which is a shame, because it's a very lively pub. Need to do something about all that wood in there - add some drapes, or something.

Sat down for a propaa meal in there. Food was nice, but didn't get much change out of eighty sheets.

The Haven Arms, Ealing

Lovely pubbly.

Chandlers, Ealing

Dirty drinks, dirty pub.

The Viaduct, Hanwell

Good food, except when the wife and I went there they tried to tell us we couldn't have tap water (along with the beer and wine we were buying anyway along with our meal) and would have to buy bottled water.

"Err, no love, that's illegal."

Needless to say we got the tap water but don't let them try it on with you if you go in there. Kind of follows that despite the nice interior and friendly staff the pub might be struggling, as the Sky TV screen has returned on the far side to try and win back the footy regulars who desserted the place.

Ryans, Hanwell

Good pub, good crowd (most over 30 and who have jobs).

Thai food is excellent.

The Red Lion, Hanwell

Deserved to close. That fat lass at the bar was a PR disaster.

Lavins, Hanwell

Went for an after-hours drink in here and it was great. Sandwiches given out and a good bunch.

Scarily though, you can walk past this boozer at 9am and be guaranteed to see at least one geezer at the bar nursing a pint.

The Duke of York, Hanwell

Another horrid slice of chav Poland in West London.

AVOID.

The Inn on the Green, Hanwell

Only recently discovered the Dolphin.

Went in on a Saturday night and we were only two of four people in there.

Returned last Sunday and there were probably 10 or so.

Regardless, the decor is excellent, it's very well stated and has a really nice rustic feel to it.

Needs to get busier though to stay in business I reckon.

The Viaduct, Hanwell

My local. Shame the Sky TV has gone, but they're obviously going for the non-TV audience.

Nice refurb and looks very gastro like.

Certainly recommended for quiet drink stuff, big beer garden too, and the food is excellent.

(The owners are Polish and friendly.)

McCann's, Hanwell

Went it here for the first time last weekend.

Not all that with the decor, but dead friendly, and free sandwiches with beer too.

Nice spot.

The William Wallace, Marylebone

Met my missus in here.

Went downhill after they got rid of the pool table.

Very Scottish. Dart board remains - pretty friendly.

The Marylebone, Marylebone

Like Jimmy Somerville, small but perfectly formed.

The Apollo, Marylebone

Apparently named after 90's dance icons Apollo 440.

Maybe.

Dull colour-scheme but some decent beer and efficient bar staff.

Always relied upon to show football. Food a bit dry but overall serves its purpose.

The Prince Regent, Marylebone

Rude bar staff, who 1/2 way through ordering would naff off and serve their regulars.

Even went back for second helping and the same thing happened again.

Settled for a night down the park with some Tennents Super. Infinitely more entertaining.

The Volunteer, Baker Street

Used to be alright. Now it's full of cushions, ponces and neutral colour schemes.

The Marlborough Head, Marble Arch

Try finding the toilets after a few shandies.

The Half Moon, Crawley

Away fans welcome these days.

Brilliant pre-match boozer, although I wouldn't be seen there for much else.

Slow and unplentiful bar staff. Top pool tables though, quiz machines, big screens; even jukeboxes and TV's on each table.

Would still prefer the Downsman, given the choice, if for nothing else other than the fact they employ bar staff.

The Downsman, Southgate

Top pub. Pool, darts, plenty of space, decent prices.

They put vaseline on the toilet tops to stop people sniffing in there. That didn't work so they put sand down.

LEGENDARY!

Even aside from that it's a top family venue.

The White Hart, Crawley

Don't mess with Pat! Don't ever mess with Pat!

Part Irish part chav pub right in the centre of town. Seems to have become almost trendy for the fact it's a real pub in recent years.

Pool table as well, and incredibly slippery toilet floors.

Beer garden, uninspiring, but the place has a charm all of its own.

24 May 2005 15:57

The Tavern on the Green, Pound Hill

This pub used to be RAW.

Populated by the Hazelwick 6th formers from the year dot, it was a part-comfy part-ramshackle place where I frittered and vomited away some of the best Friday nights of my life.

But the crumbling chairs and wooden beams were then ripped out when aliens landed in Grattons Park.

Never felt the same after that - all a bit unnecessary.

24 May 2005 15:54

The Beehive, Marylebone

Legendary. Nothing special about the place but a genuine old skool pub in an area that struggles to provide many similar options.

Bar staff vary between friendly and moody, as does the landlord, but their hearts are in the right places.

Food is cheap as chips yet passes most tests - the place is a lesser for the lack of the dartboard these days, but I've spent many a night in there and it would always be my first choice.

Birds don't like it because they think it's dirty.

It probably is, though that's half the attraction isn't it?

24 May 2005 15:50

The Allsop Arms, Marylebone

Decent boozer. Plenty to keep people who like pub 'entertainment' amused, with a few fruitys, nice screen for the football, and overall a place resembling something a bit more lively than the other boozers in the area - especially seeing as everyone else is going down the ponce route - Volunteer, Aristocrat and LowLife to name three within spitting distance.
