Tullie Inn, Balloch

Beer range and quality is nothing special. They had a Houston beer when we called in but we had to send it back, and with Deuchars also off there were no Scottish real ales available at all.

On the plus side the food was fine and the staff were really, really polite and friendly. I'd definitely call in again - if only to see if the beer side of things has picked up again.

The Ship, Solva

Visited the curry house restaurant recently - the food and service were top-notch.

Only passed through the bar and it looked like there were just three fairly unadventurous real ales available. I chose the Jennings Cumberland (you can choose from the bar for consumption in the restaurant) and it was OK.

The best real ale + curry choice in quite a large area I imagine !

The Harbour Inn, Solva

Location is lovely, service so-so, but the beer (Rev. James) and food were both pretty good.

The dining area on the right as you enter lacked atmosphere (at lunchtime) - the more traditional, cosy room on the left was much more appealing.

The Swan Inn, Swineford

This pub has everything I need ... Bath Ales, a sunny beer garden, and imaginative, tasty food.

The bar staff were very familiar with the regulars but I wouldn't say it affected the attention they gave us.

Some good walks around the area too.

The Trackside, Bury

Half a dozen good real ales from near and far when I came in today.

This place if heaven for railway buffs, but the outdoor tables on the platform are a suntrap and a very pleasant place to while away an hour or two with the added interest of people and trains coming and going even if you're not.

Bar staff were really friendly, and the food is simple and cheap.

New Delight Inn, Blackshaw

Definitely agree that the choice and condition of the beer is excellent, especially the Bridestones which is brewed by the landlord's son. We certainly didn't expect to find 5 real ales and several lagers including Kaltenburg Hell in such a remote spot.
The landlord himself was on duty behind the bar when we were there and was perfectly welcoming.
The menu is good and includes lots of locally sourced ingredients: the meals we had were very good and reasonably priced.
The pub is very close to both the Pennine Way and Calderdale Way, making it an excellent refreshment stop on numerous walks over the glorious moorlands in this area.
The pub is a rare example of a community local surviving in a remote location and yet offering a better range of food and beer than many a city pub.

The Grove Inn, Holbeck

Great pub, a true survivor squatting amidst office and apartment buildings that have sprung up around it in the last 5/10 years. Food is basic but that's not a priority here.
The Groves true principles - a traditional atmosphere, wide coice of real ale, live folk music - are unaffected by the radical change in punters' profile - long may it continue !

The Cavens Arms, Dumfries

Superb pub and deservedly popular (book for food). Bar staff are very very friendly, the beers great, and there's a bustling, cosy atmosphere.

Canal House, Nottingham

Surprisingly quiet on a Saturday lunch time when I visited. Interesting building to enjoy a pint in, and the Castle Rock beers were (as you'd expect) in tip-top condition.

The Head of Steam, Huddersfield

Agree this place has something of a transient atmosphere with people stopping for a pint of two on their way home from work or going out, but I don't think there's anything wrong with that. I've always found the beers in good nick and the food is served pretty quickly - a good thing for people with trains to catch !
Friendly staff and a choice of 4 rooms decorated with railway nostalgia.

The Knott Bar, Deansgate

Agree with everything ROBcamra says - a great pub/bar fully 1 minute's walk from Deansgate train and tram stations.

15 Feb 2009 13:09

The Devonshire Cat, Sheffield

A contender for one of the very best city pubs in the entire country - a great selection of real ales and menu of foreign (mainly belgian) beers running over many pages. Food is hearty and freshly prepared in a kitchen at the end of the large open room. Staff a friendly & efficient.
Popular with real ales fans, fooball fans (Bramall Lane is a 10 minute walk, and the pub is also along the tram route to Hillsborough), and students.

Barton Arms, Stablefold

Consistently good food and beers, nice clean, modern interior. I particularly enjoy it at lunchtime or evenings earlier in the week when it's not too busy.

Church Inn, Chelmorton

Friendly welcome from super pub in a quiet Derbyshire village. Good food and real ales. A few smart bedrooms available for B&B in an adjoining extension. Good walking area.

The Crescent, Salford

Echo yamato's comments - a great range of good quality beers in a friendly, atmospheric pub. Might not look much from the outside but well worth a visit.
About 5 mins walk from Salford Crescent station (along A6 toward Manchester).

The City Arms, Manchester

Yep - the City Arms is definitely still open and serving an excellent, ever-changing range of real ales in a quiet street of the city centre. Always loved this pub although it did use to get very smoky - obviously that's not the case any more.

The Royal Arms, Tockholes

Just to confirm the previous comments - this is a lovely friendly pub with great beer and food - thoroughly recommended.

The Greyhound Inn, Oldham

Friendly pub, good Lees' beer - I always pop in here for a pint before a match at Boundary Park and never had any trouble as an away fan.

The Hare and Hounds, Manchester

I presume this has changed hands now - the interior has been repainted and the fantastic old football memorabilia that used to line the walls have been replaced with routine hunting prints. It's still falls into the old-fashioned town alehouse category but has lost some atmosphere.

The Mark Addy, Salford

This unpredictable place hasn't been serving real ale for about 6 months now

24 Jan 2007 18:57

The Britannia Inn, Farnworth

Very quiet when I popped in on a Tuesday night. Looks run down from the outside (opposite Farnworth Bus Station) but the barmaid and locals were friendly and the Moorhouses beer was well kept and very cheap.

The Buccleuch and Queensberry Hotel, Thornhill

Welcoming old coaching inn at the centre of the town with good quality food and real ales.

Pack Horse Inn, Bury

Classic country pub with good walking nearby and great views back over Manchester (really !). Good range of Lees beers are kept well. Includes a restaurant with picture windows but the same menu is available throughout the pub. The food is a bit more expensive than average but justified by the quality and interesting choices. The emphasis on food doesn't detract from the beer or pubby atmosphere.

The West Riding Refreshment Rooms, Dewsbury

Superb place - good beers, friendly staff, relaxed atmosphere. Worth interupting any trans-pennine train trip for !

25 Jan 2006 09:14

The Sweet Green Tavern, Bolton

There might not be much sweet green left around this traditional little pub situated on a busy road between Morrisons and Sainsburys, but despite the unlovely surroundings the pub remarkably manages to retain a friendly, cottagey atmosphere. Usually a few real ales on, and in good condition. Just a stone's throw (across that road) from Bolton railway station.

15 Jan 2006 17:38

The Peveril Of The Peak, Castlefield

Absolute classic green tiles on exterior and a cosy, wood panelled multi-roomed interior. Usually a few decent beers on. Can get a bit crowded - but Rain Bar is just over the road if you can't get in. Dwarfed by the warehouses and flats around it, it looks like a country cottage that the city has grown up all around !

10 Jan 2006 21:51

The Lass O'Gowrie, Manchester

Great pub - usually half-a-dozen real ales, lively mixed clientele, and although it's not a sports dominated pub it is a good city-centre bet for a lively atmosphere when there's a big match on telly. Home brew beers and lovely tiled exterior.

10 Jan 2006 21:46

The Strawbury Duck, Entwistle

Picturesque country pub next to Entwistle halt on the Bolton-Blackburn railway. A good selection of real ales, always in tip-top condition, and very good food. Located in Bolton's "Lake District", very popular with walkers, especially at meal times.

10 Jan 2006 21:42

The Grey Horse Inn, Manchester

Friendly place, always a good pint and a cosy port-of-call just around the corner from Piccadilly Gardens.

10 Jan 2006 21:38

The Eddington Arms, Hindley

A traditional Holts' pub, smartly redecorated last year, doing what all the best Holts' locals do - serving good beer at good prices in no-nonsense surroundings. Handily located right next to Hindley station.

10 Jan 2006 21:34

The Hare and Hounds, Manchester

Classic, traditional city-centre boozer with fabulous tile, wood and glass interior. Friendly staff and never had a bad pint here. Some great old footie programme memrobilia in the front room.

10 Jan 2006 21:28

The English Lounge, Manchester

It's a pleasant enough place and the bar staff are friendly, but I think the beer takes second place to food here. On a recent visit I took back a Deuchars IPA, but the Black Sheep the staff (amicably) replaced it with wasn't much better.

10 Jan 2006 21:26

test 16, Manchester

The most reliable, cosy little pub in the centre of Manchester. Consistently good quality and variety of beers. I've been going here for 15 yrs and always found a traditional and welcoming atmosphere.
