Brannigans, Romford

Became "Club Ciroc" for a short while but has now closed down altogether. No great loss there, then.

The Lamb, Romford

Reopened under the name "Mulligans". Had a bit of a refit. Looks OK but have not had a drink there yet.

The Wig & Pen, Colchester

Now called The Duchess. Soulless and crap GK house. Went there last Christmas and had the worst Christmas dinner ever, bland meat, soggy sprouts and carrots and spuds as hard as bullets. Don't even bother.

The Victoria Inn, Colchester

18 months since my last review and the pub has gone from strength to strength. Now 5 hand pumps in the back bar. Crouch Vale 'Brewer's Gold' is the only permanent ale, with a wide range of, mainly local, guest ales from the likes of Colchester, Harwich and Sticklegs Breweries - but also further-travelled ales from Yorkshire and elsewhere putting in an appearance (e.g. Sheffield's Kelham Island). Tasters are freely offered before a pint is bought.

The front bar now has a wide range of real ciders and perries on sale.

Occasional beer festivals, barbecues, quiz nights, band nights and general fun evenings make this a convivial place any time you visit. No TV blaring out nonsense, but a great jukebox which can play any hit that there's even been. The locals ensure an esoteric selection of music is kept playing. No generic R 'n' B pap here!

The pub's slogan is 'A proper pub' and it certainly is that, thanks to the efforts of Sheena and Andy and the excellent bar staff Ian and Emma.

The Life Bar, Romford

Closed. Has been closed for a while and for sale.

The Custom House, Romford

What is it with this place that it gets a refit and a name change every 2 years or so? Now called Kosho, as you'll see above the pic it used to be Bar Mango before Custom House, and it was Global Cafe before that. I dare say by the time BITE change the name to Kosho it'll be called something else.

The Goose, Romford

Opposite station, cheap beer, chain pub...I was expecting this to be ghastly when I went in recently for the first time for years. But it's actually quite good. As rachael says the old alky brigade seem to have moved on (nextdoor it would appear) and there is now a mixed age crowd of generally nice friendly people. Huge garden out the back which even non-smokers like myself can enjoy. Definitely worth a visit.

Downside: It's just changed hands from M&B to some new pubco, they've taken some of the beer range away (Kronenbourg, Carlsberg & I think one ale) and put the prices up (London Pride from 2.10 to 2.55 - still cheap for Romford but quite a hike all the same).

The Old Oak, Romford

Surrounded by scaffolding and getting a total refit inside and nice new windows. Looks hopeful that it will be a nice place. Should be open in a week or two and I'll report back then.

The Albert, Colchester

Not really a pub with food. More a restaurant with a bar.

Quilters Bar, Colchester

Was in last night and was quite impressed - Guinness only 2.60 a pint and other special offers. Staff were friendly and there was a good atmosphere. Better than I remembered.

The Old Oak, Romford

CLOSED

Now closed, boarded up, To Let sign on wall. Was in here about a month ago and it was friendly enough, if a bit dingy. A week later it was shut. Hopefully someone will take it on and give it a much-needed tart-up. We shall see.

The Victoria Inn, Colchester

This pub has had a proper makeover and, like I said, I wanted to post a good review, so here it is! A lovely couple have taken it over and it is now the best pub in the area, with friendly locals and good beer. I will certainly be popping in regularly now.

Bristol Ram, Bristol

Are there two Bristol Rams, then? This site has one at 32 Park St and one at no. 48.

Curlers Tavern, Glasgow

Used to be such a great pub 20 years ago, jazz upstairs - I saw Tommy Smith play there once. Now it's just a dive I'm afraid and if I'm in the area I'll go to Tennents or down towards Dumbarton Rd.

Denholms Bar, Glasgow

Agree with Sparky. Not friendly. Pub and clientele both a bit on the run-down side.

The Alpen Lodge, Glasgow

Small and basic old-school Glasgow pub opposite the side of Central Station. Always friendly and prices are very reasonable for the city centre. I often pop in for a couple before getting the train when I'm in Glasgow.

The Victoria Inn, Colchester

Now appears to be closed. It has had whitewashed windows with little signs saying "closed for refurb" for about two months, but no sign of a refurb. Now a "To Let" board has appeared on the front so it looks like this is definitely closed.

Hopefully someone will take it over and brighten it up, so I can post a good review. It is in the ideal location for a post-work beer for those heading from the town to the station. If it was made welcoming I am sure people would start to use it. But it'll probably become flats.

Romford Working Men's Club, Romford

CLOSED

I don't know why this is still on here. It has been closed for about 5 years and the dance studio that was upstairs has extended into where the club was.

The Friendly Society, Soho

I normally prefer 'pubs' to 'bars' but I love this place. Fab decor, interesting mix of clientele and crraazy landlady who holds court on the floor, clad in some fabulous Westwood gown, introducing random people to each other. Sometimes you like 'em, sometimes not, but that's life and you just move on. Service is always quick and I've never found it to be bitchy and I've been in there loads of times. Only drawbacks are the 'traditional' closing time (11pm - just when it could really be getting going) and the prices, which are a bit steep even for Soho.

The Victoria, Romford

A great little pub within striking distance of Romford town centre but without the idiot element. Only one real ale (Adnams) but it's generally available and ok. Very nice beer garden/smoking area with patio heaters and railway-station-style canopy. Not the cheapest place in Romford but then that keeps the morons in the Goose.

The Durham Arms, Romford

Gone downhill rapidly under the new manglement. Either it seems to be full of chavs or middle-aged wannabe chavs, or totally dead, even on a Saturday night. Unpleasant atmosphere and unpleasant open-plan decor which makes you feel very exposed. It was 10x better in the previous incarnation with cosy pub-style decor. "Family's welcome", it says in the window, which just about sums it up.

The Wheatsheaf, Romford

Very much in the "we don't like strangers round 'ere" mould. Unless you or your family has been drinking here for 30 years then forget it.

Bar:me, Romford

Been closed for a few months now. No 'to let' boards or signs of refurbishment so who knows what will happen here. Nobody misses "The Place" anyway!

Ye Olde Marquis, Colchester

I had a pleasant session after work one evening in here. Staff and customers friendly, and Hopback Summer Lightning and Guinness both well-kept.

The Norfolk, Colchester

Quite nice now after the refurb. I went in after work on a weekday afternoon and there was a good mix of office types, workmen and general drinkers. 3 real ales on tap (IPA and Abbot, being a GK pub, and Speckled Hen). I had the Speckled Hen which was very pleasant. Recommended as a stop-off on the way to or from the station.

The Victoria Inn, Colchester

I went in here on a Saturday afternoon and I was the only customer. The landlady was feeding coins into the fruit machine like a woman possessed, there was a young man eating fish and chips out of the wrapping at the end of the bar, and a disinterested barmaid behind the bar. Decor was dingy and dark which only emphasised the row of flashing machines. One of those rip-off cash machines was bolted to the bar counter.

If you were the only customer, you'd think that you may get some pleasant chit-chat from the staff about what you're doing in the area, etc, but not here. I drank my 3.10 pint of Guinness and left. Avoid.

Quilters Bar, Colchester

I work in the office block across the road. The pub is closed for refurbishment and is due to open in mid-September as "Riverside Lodge"
