The Barley Mow, Selmeston

Clearly you can't keep a good pub down. Currently being refurbished and they are advertising for staff. I hope things work out this time as I've always liked the place.

The Barley Mow, Selmeston

Seems to have closed down again.

29 Dec 2014 11:12

The Barley Mow, Selmeston

I'm told that the building is subsiding and that the owner has attempted to sell the site so it looks like the end of the line.

The Barley Mow, Selmeston

Passed by a while ago and a sign said 'Closed for emergency electrical work'. The following week it said 'Closed for refurbishment'. Later still the promise of a grand opening for Mother's Day. Far as I can see it never happened and the place is now closed up with no indication that it will ever reopen.

24 May 2014 17:19

The Stadium, Hove

Now closed and boarded up. Looks like another Tesco Local on the way.

The Royal Oak, Handcross

Visited by accident - we were going somewhere and just happened to pass by at lunchtime. Clean comfortable bar and dining area. Courteous and attentive staff. Harveys and London Pride on tap and very good food. Menu not as extensive as some but we all found something. In fact I had one of the best pub steaks I've ever come across. Very pleasant experience and one which we intend to repeat.

The Golden Galleon, Exceat

Further to my last comment we really put them to the test ourselves by booking a table for ten on what turned out to be the hottest day of the year so far. When we arrived the place was packed inside and out. There was a small glitch - they hadn't put a 'Reserved' sign on our table so we had to wait until it cleared but other than that no one had any complaints. We were warned the food could take an hour to come. In fact it was barely 20 minutes. The staff coped well and were still in good spirits right at the end of the session. This place is definitely becoming a favourite.

9 Jul 2013 08:06

The Swan Inn, Lympstone

Charming village pub with a good choice of beers and an excellent menu. Staff were friendly and efficient and the food came quickly and was very good indeed. Would certainly come again. Incidentally Montie49 if you think £3.20 is dear for Carling then don't come to Brighton - it was more than that even two years ago!

23 Jun 2013 09:48

The Green Jackets, Shoreham by Sea

Now a Tesco Express. Ironically you can get a better selection of wines, beers and spirits now than when it was a pub but thats not really the point is it?

3 Apr 2013 22:10

The Bell Inn, Seend

Excellent village pub with well kept 6X and very good food and service. If I had to quibble we found the meal portions a little inconsistant. My faggots mash and peas was if anything over generous whilst my wife's shepheds pie was rather on the small side but other than that no complaints at all. Will be back for sure.

26 Feb 2013 16:03

The Golden Galleon, Exceat

The demons of the past appear to have been exorcised. We had a big family pre-Christmas bash and I've been back subsequently and have been impressed on both occasions. The real test will be in summer when the place gets packed but what we found is encouraging.

3 Feb 2013 09:15

The Barley Mow, Selmeston

My first visit since it changed hands and I'm glad to say its as good as ever. Harveys and Long Man bitter well kept combined with good food and friendly and efficient service. Won't leave it so long until my next visit!

27 Nov 2012 07:20

The Sloop Inn, Scaynes Hill

Just the place to be on a brisk Autumn day. Splendid pint of 'Toad in the Ale' and a big juicy burger. My companions opted for the Irish stew and did comment that a chunk of crusty bread would have made it perfect - a comment I passed on and which the manager said he would consider. Yippee!!!! Could happily have stayed all afternoon.

28 Oct 2012 10:23

The Filly, Brockenhurst

Another excellent New Forest pub. No complaints at all about either the place itself or what we had to eat and drink - I'll remember my venison with sauted mushrooms for some time to come. If I was to be Mr Picky then the bar staff could be a bit smarter. OK - they had monogrammed tops but the shorts and tatty jeans then ruined the effect and this place is easily good enough to warrant going the extra mile. Definitely going back.

24 Sep 2012 10:07

Turfcutters Arms, East Boldre

Found this one by accident when driving - there was a hand painted sign half buried in the hedgerow! Very nice little country pub. Beer, ambience and service all very good. Foodwise I have to slightly disagree with most other reviewers. My gammon with all the trimmings was first rate but my wife's Spanish vegetable quiche was almost completely devoid of vegetables and was also very undercooked. To be fair it did look bought in rather than home made so its deficiencies may have gone unnoticed. Certainly not deterred from visiting again.

24 Sep 2012 10:01

The Abergavenny Arms, Rodmell

Very impressed. Decor, ambience and service all good and the food was first rate. The only fly in the ointment was that there were only two cask ales (both Dark Star) - the third, probably Hophead, was off and the Partridge bitter, although tasty enough, could have been a bit colder. Nonetheless we fully intend coming again.

28 Aug 2012 14:39

The Old Plough House Inn, Duloe

In 2006 I wasn't too impressed with this one but since then both ownership and attitudes have changed and how! Excellent food, beer and service - couldn't ask for better.

21 Jul 2012 15:19

The Rugglestone Inn, Widecombe in the Moor

Normally when we go to Widecombe its the Old Inn so finding this one was a real surprise and treat. Gem is definitely the word. First rate in all respects and will now be a regular haunt on our Devon hols.

21 Jul 2012 15:14

The Partridge, Partridge Green

We had lunch here this Saturday and were quite impressed. Good selection of Dark Star beers and our meals were very good. Incidentally after we had finished I noticed another table were having the burgers and they looked pretty good to me. Don't be put off by the rather spartan interior. This is a good village pub.

25 Jun 2012 08:56

Dorset Arms, Lewes

Very pleasant, well run establishment. Very good pint of Harveys Elizabethan (please don't make this a limited edition) and good food served by a friendly and efficient staff. Based on Strongers review I was expecting a more extensive menu but its not as food orientated as say the Sussex Ox or the Cock at Ringmer. Having said that what we had was very good - fresh, well prepared and reasonably priced. Three mains plus drinks for less than fourty quid isn't that common these days and as the pub was fairly quiet they didn't use the gong! The only downside is that parking in Lewes is a bitch and although there is a car park opposite you'll be lucky to find a space especially on market days. Definitely going back.

12 Jun 2012 08:13

The Seven Sisters, Seaford

New owners recently took over so my previous comments may no longer apply. Hopefully the standards will be maintained.

1 Jun 2012 14:40

The Green Jackets, Shoreham by Sea

Demolition contractors are now on site so its 'Hasta la vista baby' for another pub.

1 Jun 2012 14:38

The Great Oak, Petersfield

Had lunch here again recently and was rather disappointed. Beer (London Pride this time) was OK but the food and service were indifferent. The waiter clearly wished he was elsewhere and judging by the meal the chef had already gone. You are better off with a Ginsters from the M and S in the filling station opposite.

17 May 2012 09:02

The Juggs Arms, Kingston

Pleasant enough location, cosy and inviting interior BUT... The service although friendly wasn't particularly efficient. The beer, Sheperd and Neame isn't my favourite but what I had was well kept. The food could have been a whole lot better especially given the prices they charge. Kingston is an affluent village so I suppose the locals are happy with it but there are equally nice pubs with better food and service within a few miles so we probably won't bother with this one again.

22 Apr 2012 08:17

The Golden Cross, Hove

Just reopened after a major refurb and is now the Noble House. Haven't tried it but the web site is encouraging.

14 Apr 2012 08:09

The Badgers Watch, Peacehaven

Went in for lunch this Saturday and was pleasantly surprised. Vintage Inns in my experience tend to ride a roller coaster between good and bloody awful but on this occasion we were definitely near the top. It looks like there have been a few changes other than the name. We received a warm welcome. Beerwise the Harveys was not on but the Adnams was very good - I could easily have had a couple more but we had to be somewhere later. Food was good and came promptly and they provided a full table service though whether they will revert to the the wooden spoons in the high season is anyone's guess. I hope that this regime will continue as at this rate I could happily become a regular.

20 Feb 2012 07:42

The Green Jackets, Shoreham by Sea

Drove past this Sunday and its now closed and boarded up so clearly the rugby club were not worth waiting for.

13 Feb 2012 07:47

The Fighting Cocks, Godshill

A welcome refuge after a country walk in freezing weather. A warm welcome from friendly and efficient staff, good beer and food excellent for both quality and value. Don't take too much notice of the usual suspects on the menu - the specials boards are the real stars. My only real quibble is that of the four ales on tap only one (Ringwoods Best) was local. I was also pleased to see that one of the casserole dishes came with a chunk of bread for the gravy - something which should be encouraged as there are many other dishes that have things too good not to mop up!

12 Feb 2012 13:42

The Giants Rest, Wilmington

Superb country pub which ticks all the boxes. On a cold February day what could be better than an open fire, friendly service , Harveys Old and steak and Guiness casserole with dumplings. Possibly a chunk of bread to mop up the gravy but thats just me. Actually I'm thinking of starting a chunk of bread campaign as quite often I've had to leave really nice gravy. Are you with me!!!!

5 Feb 2012 09:00

The Beachy Head, Eastbourne

Well this is weird. We had lunch here last Saturday and for an M & B we were actually quite impressed. Staff were friendly and attentive (despite being busy the barman brought my drink to the table). There was full table service - none of that lining up for a wooden spoon rubbish and the food wasn't at all bad. It certainly confirms what I said before but may also point to an inconsistancy of service which in the past has been the bain of M and B's establishments. I'de certainly be happy to eat there again.

19 Jan 2012 08:46

The Badgers Watch, Peacehaven

Now renamed 'The Smuggler's Rest' but still an M & B establishment and I'm not aware of any other changes. Never did find out who Badger was or what he might have been watching but then I doubt if any smugglers rested here either.

12 Dec 2011 07:48

White Hart Inn, West Hoathly

Lovely surroundings combined with good food and beer. Table service is a nice touch but this is still a pub and not just an eating place. If I was going to be REALLY picky the food could have been a tad hotter but what we had was excellent. Looking at the decorations I would imagine Christmas here would be brilliant. Definitely coming back.

3 Dec 2011 17:36

The Farmers Inn, Scaynes Hill

I've not been back since the new owners took over so after reading the recent vitriolic reviews I was curious to say the least. I'm happy to say that the new regime is doing an excellent job. The building has been refurbished and redecorated throughout. The staff are friendly and attentive and although the beer selection is limited, what is available (Harveys and Bass) is well kept. The food is neither over priced nor pretentious. The menu is standard pub fare but the quality is good and the portions generous. There is also now a coffee shop attached which should help to make the place more of a focus for the village. We certainly intend to visit again. Incidentally there appears to be a green right outside the front door but being a townie I could be mistaken.

19 Nov 2011 17:28

The Green Man, Ringmer

Well I did return and thoroughly agree with the previous reviewer. Better selection of beer than last time - Everards Tiger was very palatable. Will have to go again as there are another four or five ales to try.

2 Oct 2011 09:33

The Ship Inn, Southwick

Smashing little boozer very much in the traditional style. Good range of beers (the HSB is very palatable) and a tempting lunchtime menu. I love the place.

9 Aug 2011 08:03

The Ship, Lerryn

Everything a village pub should be right down to the dogs! Good range of ales though sadly a couple of them were unavailable when we were there but the Betty Stogs made up it. Had one of the best pub burgers ever and the place is run by some really lovely people. Another triumph for for the satnav as we would never have known this place even existed otherwise.

23 Jul 2011 17:51

The Butterleigh Inn, Cullompton

Would never have found this place if we hadn't got the Good Pub Guide loaded into the satnav. (Isn't technology great!!) Smashing country pub in every way. The entrance was a bit confusing as you have to go through the gate which was shut and didn't actually look like the entrance if you see what I mean. However once inside we got a warm welcome and top notch food and drink. I also had to park in the village hall car park as if the pub has a car park of its own then its even better hidden than the entrance. Well pleased.

23 Jul 2011 17:44

The Weary Ploughman Inn, Churston Ferrers

I've seen a few changes to this place over the years and its now definitely a restaurant. The bar is really only for residents of the hotel part or for diners enjoying a pre-meal drink. Go in with six mates for a session and I'm sure that the response will be polite but firm. A bit of a shame as the beer is superb and comes from a micro brewery just down the road (Bays). Given that the emphasis is on dining you would expect high quality for both food and service and you wouldn't be dissappointed. On Sunday its roasts only but we came away happy and if you are a train sado like me you'll like the location too.

23 Jul 2011 17:36

Royal Castle Hotel, Dartmouth

Very traditional and comfortable interior and very popular. Even just after noon on a weekday we got one of the last tables. Several ales on tap. The Doom Bar was very palatable. Food excellent and the service friendly and professional. The proprietor made an appearance as the place was so busy and he is definitely a character! The gents is like being in a giant microwave and certainly doesn't match the rest of the decor.

23 Jul 2011 17:13

The Prospect Inn, Exeter

We had a really good lunch here. I agree about the pie - it was excellent and well supported by the two pints of Tribute! The staff were friendly and the service good. Very quiet even for a rainy Friday but my impression is that the place comes to life in the evenings when there is live entertainment. Spot on!!

23 Jul 2011 17:02

The Ancient Mariner, Hove

Finally got the chance to give this place a proper try and wasn't disappointed. Booked in for Sunday lunch - the usual fairly extensive menu is replaced by some superb roasts with all the trimmings. Beer on this occassion was either No1 or Kings, the former slid down a treat. Service was prompt, friendly and efficient and the surroundings light, airy and welcoming. Altogether a great experience which I certainly intend to repeat.

4 Jul 2011 06:35

The Edge, Port Isaac

Actually its been so long since I suggested this one I've pretty well forgotten what it was like. Can't think of anything bad about any aspect of the place but can't recall anything outstanding either and if I could then its well out of date anyway.

22 Jun 2011 15:00

The Trooper Inn, Froxfield

I can only reiterate the previous comments. We had lunch here a while back and stayed overnight this bank holiday. Both the pub and the B & B are clean and comfortable and the staff friendly and attentive. Not much of a beer selection but what was available was well kept. The food is good but pricey though that didn't seem to be detering the customers. I'de come again.

2 May 2011 09:09

The Star, Petworth

Stopped in for lunch on the way to somewhere else and was very pleasantly surprised. Nice clean little drinker with a reasonable range of ales and friendly, efficient staff. Unfortunately as I was driving I can only comment on the orange juice (very nice as orange juice goes I suppose). Food was very good. Standard pub menu plus some nice looking specials. Good sized portions too. If I had to be Mr Picky then the toilets although clean could do with a refurb - brighter lighting and some cheerier decor would work wonders. Definitely coming back.

2 May 2011 09:00

The Bothy Bar, Fort Augustus

Really more of a restaurant for the tourist trade than a pub but quite pleasant nonetheless. No complaints about the beer, the food, the service or the surroundings. Would certainly come again.

30 Apr 2011 07:57

Ben Nevis Bar, Fort William

A very good evening involving haggis, Dark Island and Talisker all served by friendly and efficient staff in pleasant surroundings. What more can I say?

21 Apr 2011 09:30

The Ingram Bar, Glasgow

Went to Glasgow on a day trip and was looking forward to haggis and a pint of 80/-. Disaster - the place has closed down. The agent's board says it has been re-let and it looks like the builders are in but I couln't see any indication of when (or if) it might re-open or in what form. Such a shame.

21 Apr 2011 09:26

Royal Oak, Edinburgh

Absolutely brilliant. Lovely staff and a really great crowd - a mix of locals and tourists just in for a superb evening.Apart from the booked artists you can just go in and give 'em a song. They even got half a tune from me and that won't happen again in a hurry! If you are in to folk this place is unmissable and be sure to by the CD.

21 Apr 2011 09:21

Sandy Bells, Edinburgh

Only dropped in for a swift drink and to check out what time the live music started but overall impression very good. Friendly staff and a good crowd. How often do you see a guy go out for a smoke and leave his wallet to guard his pint? Not where I live anyway.

21 Apr 2011 09:12

The Beehive, Edinburgh

Appears to be a chain pub and as such has a corporate rather than an individual personality. Beer and service were OK but food a bit iffy. On the positive side the portions were generous and what we got tasted fine but it seems that when busy the chef loses it. For example my fish and chips arrived without some of the advertised items and my wife's veg was virtually raw. There are better pubs within yards.

21 Apr 2011 09:06

The Grenadier, Hailsham

A step back in time to when I first started drinking and all pubs had dark wooden panelling and a carpet that was fitted on VE day. I loved it!!! Very nice pint of Harveys Old and although the menu is very limited (at least at lunchtime) the value for money can't be beat. Three main meals with drinks for less than 25 - another blast from the past. Pubs with character should be treasured before Mitchells and Butler destroy both them and our very souls.

6 Mar 2011 08:26

The Duke Of Wellington, Shoreham by Sea

A smashing little boozer with an absolutely brilliant range of beers, lagers and ciders and a nice friendly crowd both sides of the bar. BUT in a pub barely larger than my lounge the amps arn't required and certainly don't need to be turned up to the pain level. I'm afraid the volume spoiled my visit.

28 Dec 2010 23:05

The Barley Mow, Selmeston

Hadn't been for a while and in my absense the place has had a bit of a refurb and some new owners. Glad to say the standards haven't dropped and if anything the food is better than before. Not overstruck on the Hepworth Old but the Hophead was very good. Nice people running the place too. Won't leave it so long 'till my next visit.

4 Dec 2010 20:54

The Cock Inn, Ringmer

Another splendid lunch. What more can I say?

21 Nov 2010 10:32

Black Horse, Nuthurst

An honest country pub - no horse brasses or farm implements hanging from the ceiling. Beer good but not a huge choice. Food superb. Yes there is a bit of a wait but thats because everything is cooked to order. Yes it is a pricier than most others but then you do get what you pay for. If I do have one gripe its that the refurbishment didn't reach the toilets. I appreciate that its an old building but they could be so much nicer.

26 Oct 2010 08:23

The Partridge Inn, Singleton

A real gem accidently found on our way to the Weald Museum. Couldn't fault any aspect of the place. The roast partridge (Had to have it really) was superb as was my wife's venison stew. The normal menu is fairly bog standard but the specials board is the star of the show. Yes it is a bit pricier than most but you definitely get what you pay for. We were there at lunchtime but I would imagine that an evening meal there would be something really special. Just wish it was closer to home.

10 Oct 2010 17:25

The Halfway House, Rose Hill

Couldn't agree more with the previous comments. I've always liked this one and the new people are doing a grand job.

18 Sep 2010 22:43

The Stoneham, Hove

Due to open on 7th October as The Stoneham Pub and Pizzeria (Good grief!!!). Never much fancied the place before and I doubt whats been done to the place will change my mind.

16 Sep 2010 12:49

The Ship Inn, Lymington

Made a return visit this weekend and found it better than last time. Definitely leaning more towards being a restaurant but you can still prop up the bar if so inclined. Could have done with a few more chips to go with the excellent battered fish and the Old Hooky was a tad too cold but otherwise first rate.

14 Sep 2010 16:32

The Green Man, Ringmer

This is one of those that I've passed by a thousand times and finally tried and wish I'de tried sooner. The beers are mainly Greene King which are not my favourites but the Morland bitter was very palatable. The menu is fairly bog standard but the quality is good and the portions are hearty. Will definitely return.

28 Aug 2010 23:54

Lamb Inn, Ripe

The sign said open at twelve. So we waited, and waited. Then we were joined by others who waited too. They may still be waiting. We on the other hand went elsewhere.

28 Aug 2010 23:50

The St Pirans Inn, Holywell Bay

Excellent drop of Tribute and a very pleasant lunch. My fish and chips was superb. The lunch menu is not as extensive as the evening one but we all found something we enjoyed. Interior a little dark but on the hot sunny day of our visit it was most welcome.

3 Aug 2010 22:51

The Smugglers Den Inn, Newquay

Super country pub/restarant reached down a narrow lane (Oh how I hate driving down those). Standard pub menu supplemented by some interesting specials. All very pleasant and reasonably priced. Skinners, Tribute and Doom Bar of which the latter slid down a treat. Service was a little slow but that just left time for more beer especially as I wasn't driving back.

3 Aug 2010 22:45

The Driftwood Spars Hotel, St Agnes

Wow. This one was a real find. Not only St Austell and Sharpes but also eight of their own brews. After a pint of St A's 'Proper Job' I switched to Lou's Brew (5%) and have to say it was the better pint. Food very good and generously served by friendly and efficient staff. We were there the same week as the previous reviewer but I can't recall any charge for the car park. Definitely coming back as there are still 7 of their brews I haven't tried.

3 Aug 2010 22:40

The Cobweb Inn, Boscastle

Pubs in tourist spots should always be approached with caution but this one is pretty good. We had lunch in the bar but there is also a carvery and a family room. Couldn't fault the beer and the food and service were pretty good too. The local drunk and the grumpy git referred to below were nowhere to be seen.

3 Aug 2010 22:33

The Pheasant, St Newlyn East

Not very pleased with our visit. Arrived at just before twelve and went in to the deserted bar. Barman arrived a few minutes later and said they were not yet open. OK
Sat down at one of the tables that didn't have a reserved sign only to be moved by said barman to another table in a dark corner of the bar. He then removed the menus we had taken from the bar and replaced them with a very limited lunch menu. I also was not overstruck at having my party addressed as 'You guys'. In fact I found his whole attitude a bit offhand. After glancing at the aforesaid meagre menu we decamped to another hostelry where we received better service and a warmer welcome.

22 Jul 2010 15:09

Salutation Inn, Tynemouth

Seems a bit touristy which given its location is hardly surprising. Nice refuge on a very hot day. Service good and the menu looked promising but like every other pub around this part of the country finding a decent ale amongst the ice cold lager taps isn't easy. The 'Sheepdog' (4.7) was the best I could find and to be honest I've drunk better session bitters. I assume that the plethora of flags is for the footy rather than permanent decoration.

25 Jun 2010 08:07

O'Neills, Newcastle

A welcome refuge from the World Cup. Nice pint of Guiness (as you would expect) and the food is not bad and very reasonably priced. Watch your change though - they slipped me an Irish fiver which has been a devil of a job to get rid of. Apart from that no complaints about the service.

25 Jun 2010 08:00

The Morpeth Arms, Pimlico

Quite a pleasant riverside pub with an excellent range of Youngs' beers plus Bombadier. Food not at all bad - really enjoyed the Fusion Platter. A nice change to my usual menu choices. Staff friendly and efficient. We were in about six so it was mainly the after work crowd but everyone seemed happy enough.

18 May 2010 14:55

The Gallery, Pimlico

A bit surprised to read theswe reviews. We had a pleasant early evening meal here. Nice pint of London Pride and a well cooked steak served by polite and friendly staff. Quite a young crowd in which meant it was a bit raucous but nothing to get het up about. Happy to come again.

18 May 2010 14:48

The Poets Corner, Hove

Yes the new name is a bit 'trendy wine bar' but the refurb is pretty good and hasn't destroyed the original feel of the place. The array of Harveys beers is certainly impressive and I too hope that will continue. The folk club is back in residence and is a brilliant evening if you ignore the naff new chandalier in the function room!

5 May 2010 17:24

The Yew Tree, Arlington

Passed this one a few times at the weekend and it was usually packed. Finally an opportunity presented itself to call on a Wednesday and it was still so popular that even at just gone twelve we got one of the last tables. Very good country pub and I can't really fault it. Our meals were well prepared and generously served. The beer (Harveys Sussex and Hadlow) was well kept and the service was friendly and efficient. Highly advisable to book as even arriving early won't necessarily get you a table.

5 May 2010 17:15

The Great Oak, Petersfield

Part of the Whitbread 'Table Table' chain although to be honest there's no difference between them and any of the Mitchells and Butler lines. The beer (Tetleys Smoothflow) was pretty foul and there was no sign of a decent guest ale. On the plus side the food wasn't bad and the service from our waitress was excellent. The place is really just there to service the Travel Inn next door or to provide sustenance for those passing through as the location (next to the petrol station and in the shadow of the A3 flyover) hardly makes for a evening out.

5 May 2010 17:07

The Beachy Head, Eastbourne

It used to be a Brewers Fayre but is now an M & B Vintage Inn so at least thats an improvement. (Actually changing from Brewers Fayre to a chemical weapon test site would have been an improvement but thats bye the bye.) Anyway, food, beer and service are about par for the M & B course but the place could do with a refurb and it would have been better had the heating been turned on. Incidently don't go in after a hard day and sit in the corner nursing a drink or you might be mistaken for a jumper.

27 Mar 2010 16:26

The Lydiard, Swindon

Its actually a Beefeater on the trading estate rather than a real pub. The food wasn't too bad but needless to say 'healthy option' is a foreign phrase to this organisation. Service was slow due to there not being enough staff. Another couple of bodies would have made all the difference. My big beef (excuse pun) was the beer. The 6X tasted watery and had a head like that Boddingtons shite. Hardly a good advert for Wadsworth bearing in mind that their brewery is only a few miles up the road and some people might have thought about taking the tour until they tried this abused brew.

22 Mar 2010 13:18

The Westbourne, Hove

Forget the Aldrington. This is now one of the best pubs in this part of town. Nice atmosphere, good beer and a very good menu - especially the burgers! If the new look Eclipse (renamed The Poets Corner) turns out to be rubbish I may well shift my allegiance.

5 Mar 2010 07:55

The Duke of Devonshire, Eastbourne

Another M & B chain pub and as such shares all the good and bad points of the breed. Actually it is almost identical to the one next door but apparently aimed at a younger clietele - hence the extensive cocktail menu and no locks on the toilet doors. Come to think of it - its almost the same as all the other pubs in this part of Eastbourne (or to use it's old Roman name - Wannabebrightonium)

3 Mar 2010 14:09

Trevor Arms, Glynde

I think the kickboxing champ might have taken too many kicks in the head - LEwEs is spelt with two 'E's. Actually I thought they had stopped cage fighting in LEwEs as it frightened the budgie!

7 Feb 2010 08:42

The Stadium, Hove

Complete change here. Its now the Atlas pub and restaurant. I used to drink in here about 35 years ago when I was building a house round the corner and remember it pretty much as the other reviewers have described. Might give it a try in its new guise.

The Badgers Watch, Peacehaven

Well, made a return visit and have to admit that when its not too busy its not a bad place. Certainly the best Vintage Inn that I've been in so far. I've given it the highest mark not because its exceptional but just to raise its average score which I feel is too low.

30 Jan 2010 17:32

Trevor Arms, Glynde

Well, shocked and stunned by the last two reviews! Having driven past the place many times finally gave it a go and found the experience a pleasant one. Food good, ale well kept and staff friendly and helpful. I'm also glad we arrived early as the place filled up pretty quickly after twelve and the other patrons seemed happy with what they were getting. Will definitely be coming back.

18 Jan 2010 08:19

The Poets Corner, Hove

Latest news is that it has closed for refurbishment. I'm told it will reopen in the new year with a new manager and a new name. It was pretty good before so I'm hoping for the best.

17 Dec 2009 08:46

Falcon Inn, Cloughton

Another prime example of how to run a country pub. Immaculate condition - especially the garden. Beer, food and service all top notch. You will need to keep a look out - the turning off the main road is easily missed and the signage is a bit understated. Well worth a visit on the way to Scarborough.

6 Oct 2009 07:55

The Church House Inn, Rattery

Its all been said for me. We had a brilliant lunch here - food, beer and service all first rate. Didn't try the Otter but the Jail Ale was very palatable. One tip - the menu is good but the specials board is the real star.

20 Sep 2009 08:44

The Halfway House Inn, Kingsand

Returned this year and can confirm that the menu IS good - the scallops were a real treat as was the Doom Bar I washed them down with. When I'm old I want to be one of the locals on the bar stools musing upon life. These two villages are really blessed for pubs!!

14 Sep 2009 19:02

The Globe, East Looe

I'm inclined to agree about this being the best pub in town (although I've yet to try all the rest). Its close enough to the centre of town (and the car park) to make it easily accessible but still far enough out so that it doesn't get packed at lunchtime. The Doom Bar was superb and the lunch (Sunday roast) was excellent. We don't usually eat in Looe when visiting but I think that will change having visited here. Proper job!!!

14 Sep 2009 18:53

The Black Sheep Brewery, Masham

Went here for lunch as the bar at Theakstons doesn't do food. Very good lunch helped down with a couple of pints of Riggwelter. Needless to say the beers are very well kept. Still can't answer the great question that must puzzle the universe - is Riggwelter better than Old Peculier. I will just have to keep gathering evidence.

6 Jul 2009 08:40

The Black Bull in Paradise, Masham

Yes it is a bar attached to the visitor centre but as it does all of the things pubs do (apart from food) then it must count if only for the excellent quality of the beer. Needless to say all the ales are Theakstons and I couldn't find one I didn't like. Note to all pubs in the Brighton area - any of these brews would make brilliant guest ales and earn my undying gratitude. Further note to Sainsburys - they all come as bottled beers too.

6 Jul 2009 08:34

The Queens Arms, Litton

Difficult to fault in any aspect. Superb location, great local beer and excellent food all served up by a warm and welcoming staff. Not a huge menu but we were all well pleased with what was available. The beer deserves a much wider audience. This place is what country pubs should all be about.

2 Jul 2009 17:45

Black A Moor Hotel, Ripon

Looks nice and the staff are friendly. Beer is good although a premium bitter would have been appreciated. As for the food - the menu talks the talk but the chef don't walk the walk. My chops were tasty enough but for 'garlic butter' read 'swimming in fat'. My wife's veg lasagne was a few sad veggies under a half inch layer of semi melted cheese which flopped on to the plate like the aftermath of a failed liposuction op. Could do soooo much better.

29 Jun 2009 16:08

The Punchbowl, York

Definitely the place to go if you are hungry!! The large fish and chips is very large indeed and the rest of the menu looked pretty good too. Nice drop of Black Sheep bitter and regularly changing guest ales. Efficient service from friendly staff. The diet is certainly taking a bashing this holiday!

28 Jun 2009 16:08

The Angel, York

The previous review gives a fair enough description although I found the beer not at all bad. The unused pump now has another Black Sheep beer on it. The food is good and generously served although the presentation is a little old fashioned. We all enjoyed our meals and would be happy to return.

28 Jun 2009 15:59

The Ancient Mariner, Hove

Haven't been in since it was the Rutland but certainly intend to go again. The Sussex Giant was a treat although a couple of degrees colder would have made it perfect. Didn't eat but the Sunday roasts looked pretty good. Wondered why they chose the name until we realised it is actually on the corner of Coleridge Street - get it. All right please yourselves.

26 May 2009 09:04

The Jolly Sportsman, East Chiltington

Rather more restaurant than pub.Not cheap and the portion sizes are a bit on the small side. Can't fault the actual place - the garden and covered patio are especially nice. The beer is good as is the food and the staff friendly and helpful, but if you are looking for a good hearty pub feed then this is not the place.

26 May 2009 08:59

Terminus Hotel, Eastbourne

Very nice town centre hostelry with excellent Harveys and good generously served food. The menu, however, is nowhere near as 'extensive' as the signage would have you believe. Has the look of a locals' pub which is always a good indicator (and cetainly more inviting than the the chav palace next door!)

11 May 2009 08:19

The Green Dragon, Marlborough

My recommendation for those staying at the Greene King place over the road but who wish to avoid their beers and food. Superb drop of 6X and good food reasonably priced. Nice untouched town centre local. Long may it continue.

23 Mar 2009 08:17

The Berwick Inn, Berwick

First visit in a long time and an enjoyable one. Nice drop of Pedigree and good food at reasonable prices. If I was going to be picky the place is probably due for a bit of a makeover but other than that - no complaints.

15 Mar 2009 12:46

The Jack and Jill Inn, Clayton

My last visit was a bit dissappointing. The food and beer were still good but the prices have taken a hike. The Harveys seems to have been replaced with beers from the Hammerpot Brewery (new one on me) so I played it safe with the guest ale (Spitfire). I can still recommend the place but you can do at least as well elsewhere in the area.

5 Mar 2009 08:11

Bibendum, Eastbourne

Have only been to a reception in the function room which was pretty good. Nice food and polite (although inexperienced) staff. Did have a drink in the main bar - the sofas, continental beers in the cooler and the cocktail menu all scream trendy wine bar but overall not that bad - I've drunk in worse!!

18 Feb 2009 08:52

The Aldrington, Hove

Finally tried the place after living here for nearly 30 years and was impressed with the improvement. Will give it a proper review under its new name - it doesn't deserve to have the Aldrington's rep hanging round its neck like a dead albatross!!!

31 Jan 2009 07:53

The Commodore Hotel, Bournemouth

I've stayed at several Old English Inns and have to say this this is one of the better ones. The hotel part is clean and comfortable though we did find the En-suite rather claustrophobic. In fact it was so small that the basin had to be fitted in the bedroom!! Drinkwise? Well it is Greene King and I'm afraid Abbot (their so called premium ale) doesn't stand up to most other breweries session bitters. As for the food - the sight of two catering supply trucks delivering rather gave the game away but I think the trick is to order something that can't be microed or boil in bag. For example my duck breast was excellent whereas my wife's risotto was distinctly 'packety'. If you really can't face it then Salvatores half a mile up the road will see you all right.

25 Jan 2009 12:41

The Ship Inn, Lymington

I like the Howards Way reference of a previous reviewer - I thought of the Onedin Line when I saw the locality!! Yes it is very yachty and touristy but in January most of the customers seem to be locals. Managed to find London Pride hiding amongst the ice cold lager taps and it wasn't bad. Neither was the food or indeed the service. I agree that it is more restaurant than pub but that is the way of the world especially when M and B get their hands on a place.

25 Jan 2009 12:29

The Sussex Ox, Milton Street

Hadn't been for a while and glad to say that I'm still impressed. The menu now leans more towards game and locally caught fish which is fine by me - my duck was excellent. Fans of the Ox burger needn't fret however - its still there and managed to defeat my father in law!!! Good on yer.

18 Jan 2009 12:45

The Seven Sisters, Seaford

A pre-Christmas family gathering and lunch last Sunday only served to confirm my previous comments. This is a superb little pub which manages to tick all the boxes. The only fly is that I hear the owner wants to move on. Please everybody - tell him he can't - his steak and kidney pie is too important to lose!!! Seriously, having just read the latest comments on The Oystercatcher only convinces me more that we need good independant pubs like this.

12 Jan 2009 08:19

The Poets Corner, Hove

After living in the area for 28 years finally gave this one a try as they were having a folk night. Wish I'de gone there years ago. Excellent pub. Harveys Sussex, Old and Armada on the pumps. Didn't eat but I gather the food is pretty good. Decent crowd and friendly staff. There was football on in the main bar but it didn't impinge on either the other bar or us oldies upstairs listening to Peter Sarstedt. Who knows - I may even try the Westbourne next!!!

10 Jan 2009 09:03

The George and Dragon, Houghton

Lovely little country pub with brilliant views over the downs. The rear terrace would be the ideal place to spend a summer evening. Can't comment on the beer as I was driving and was on the OJ. The food, however, was very good - not gastro but excellent pub fayre with all the old favorites well prepared and served. Will most definitely come back.

29 Nov 2008 08:47

The Badgers Watch, Peacehaven

Its an M and B Vintage Inn and so shares both the good and bad points of all the others. Building and location are excellent, food, beer and service are adequate at best. I'm sure head office will be flattered to have the place called a gastropub and I'm sure they have pretentions in that direction (provided it doesn't cost anything). I now tend to avoid Vintages in high season as too many customers highlight the shortcomings of the organisation and even complaining to head office won't change anything but might get you a free dinner! Won't be going back for a good while as apart from the Brewers Fayre in Newhaven there are many better food pubs in the area.

28 Sep 2008 08:49

The Half Way House, Portslade

I thought we were in for a comeback when the builders moved in, but no - its now the 'Waggie Tails Doggy Day Centre and Grooming Parlour' and that is NOT a new trendy wine bar name!!!!

22 Aug 2008 08:07

The Admiral McBride, Plymouth

Looks like I had a lucky escape here as we didn't like the look of the menu and went to the Navy instead. If the foregoing comments are true no wonder the Pilgrims sailed away!

12 May 2008 10:48

Navy Inn, The Barbican

Excellent quayside pub with good beer and food. Given its location I was amazed at how cheap the food was given its quality (and quantity). Enjoy this one while you can as its proximity to the marina makes it a prime chain pub target if the landlord ever decides to sell.

12 May 2008 10:45

The Ship Inn, East Looe

Pubs in tourist traps are often a bit iffey with regards to service and quality but this one is OK. Nice drop of Tribute and good food reasonably priced and well served. Fairly quite for a Bank holiday week which suited us if not them.

12 May 2008 10:37

The Halfway House Inn, Kingsand

Last pub on the Black Prince procession route so I had to give it a go. Would you believe that two of the beers were more local to my home than here!! Stiil everyone seemed happy enough and I haven't had a pint of Gales HSB in a long time so no real complaints. Don't know about the food but the menu looked good.

12 May 2008 10:15

The Rising Sun, Kingsand

Had a drink here on the day of the Black Prince festival. Still no Doom Bar but I'm getting a taste for IPA now. Didn't eat but the food looked pretty good.

12 May 2008 10:00

The Devonport Inn, Kingsand

Lovely seaside pub but no Sharpes Doom Bar! Still the IPA was a very acceptable substitute. Mega crab sarnies and my companions ham sandwich and cheese ploughmans looked equally good. Nice atmosphere though I think you might need a peg leg or a parrot to feel really at home.

12 May 2008 09:54

The Edgcumbe Arms, Cremyll

Spotted this one from a boat in Plymouth Sound and thought it looked promising. Another good decision!! Four St Austell beers. I tried both Tribute and HSD - both well kept and slid down a treat. Good food with both a menu and a carvery, the latter very popular with the locals. Nice drive to get there but watch out as the car park entrance is easily missed.

12 May 2008 09:47

The Old Inn, Widecombe in the Moor

It was good last time I was here and has improved since then. Good beer and food (Roast beef was excellent)served by an efficient and friendly staff who were not at all phased by the bank holiday crowd. A credit to the village.

12 May 2008 09:41

The Kings Head, North Chailey

Finally decided to give this place a try even though Greene King ales are not my favourite tipples. Pleasantly surprised however - the Abbot was well kept and very drinkable. Food was slightly variable. My meal was excellent but my wife said her beef casserole had a distinctly 'Ready Meal' quality. Given that they are advertising for a chef may well be the reason for the compromise. Friendly staff and any pub that has a cat will always get my vote. Will certainly return.

21 Apr 2008 11:51

The Regency Tavern, Brighton

Can't coment on the atmosphere as my visit was on a quite Tuesday lunchtime. Found it to be a comfortable refuge on a cold Spring day. Nice pint of Bishops Finger. Food is 'pub grub' of good quality and generous portions - must try the burger next time. Table service - nice touch. Staff friendly and attentive. Certainly a cut above the crap you get in Churchill Square's food hall.

26 Mar 2008 09:45

The Prince of Wales, Tunbridge Wells

Nice little town centre boozer with Harveys and Flowers on tap.Food is definitely in the Pub Grub category and the service could be quicker but it is good and all freshly prepared. The fact that it was full on Saturday lunchtime when the shopping mall food hall is within five minutes walk says a lot to me. Signs advertising Kareoke and Quiz Night suggest this is a popular evening haunt for the locals. Good on it!!!

16 Mar 2008 10:23

The Red Lion, Avebury

This is probably the only pub with a web site warning people about it. Google Aoid the Red Lion Avebury if you want a laugh!

11 Mar 2008 15:04

The Oystercatcher, Littlehampton

It appears that there is another side to Vintage Inns which belies their projected public image. You might care to look at mine and others experiences at the Golden Galleon. Regarding food orders I believe that when busy any order which requires some attention gets pushed to the back of the queue in order to speed throughput. If any of you out there have had similar treatment at the hands of Vintage Inns then write to Mitchells and Butlers managing director - address is on their web site.

25 Feb 2008 09:13

The Newmarket Inn, Lewes

Only just occurred whilst having a look at my old witterings. If Justgoodbeer always found the place closed how could he say if the pie was microwaved?

20 Feb 2008 16:41

The Swan Hotel, Alton

Quite right - it is a hotel so I'll dispense with that aspect first. Clean, comfortable rooms, polite attentive staff who could come from Mars for all I care. Reasonable prices. Always happy to stay at this or any other of the Old English franchise.
Pub bit. Not so good. Greene King ales are not the greatest in my opinion and there was not even a decent guest ale so I was stuck with Abbot. Menu is hearty with pretentions to gastro which the Greene King central kitchen can't really pull off. You won't starve but it won't rock your world either. There is fortunately a decent Italian place just up the road. Breakfast is a rather sad buffet affair with crusted scrambled eggs, undercooked bacon and 'Tiger Tank' sausages (skin virtually impenetrable!!) Definitely needs work on the catering side hence my low score.
Incidentally all credit to the lads at Central Tyres for getting the Rev out of the s*** late on a Saturday afternoon.

12 Feb 2008 09:02

The Castle, Pevensey Bay

Friendly traditional local with a loyal band of regulars. Nice pint of London Pride and the food was brill!!! Wondered why it took so long to come until we figured out that the regulars had put in their orders well before twelve (knowledge is power as they say). Definitely going back because I want to take on the all day breakfast!

4 Feb 2008 09:29

The Horse and Groom, Horsham

beer and the food is exceptionally good value but don,t expect gastro - just good honest nosh. Obviously a sport and drinkers pub and judging by the fact it was almost empty on a Saturday lunchtime I guess in only comes to life in the evening or when a match is on. Far better than the other two places we looked at. Definitely on my list for a break when undergoing retail therapy in Horsham.

13 Jan 2008 13:42

The Seven Sisters, Seaford

Had lunch here a year or two back and could only describe it as average so when I heard we had booked a family lunch there I was a bit concerned. Turned out to be totally unfounded - this place is a little gem. Warm, friendly, good beer and food - not gastro but top of the range pub fayre reasonably priced and good portions. Didn't have the pie (unusual for me) but it did look nice so I will be going back.

11 Dec 2007 13:02

The Tiger Inn, East Dean

Made a return visit last Saturday and oh what a difference! The thick old walls which keep out the summer heat turn the place into a meat locker in November and the open fire in the bar area just isn't up to the job. Nice pint of Kings Horsham but the food was dissappointing - my meal was warm rather than hot and whilst my wife's was hot it was (in her words) only OK. I can remember rave reviews for this place once upon a time - what happened?

19 Nov 2007 14:53

The Kings Head, Wimborne

Welcoming and comfortable establishment in the middle of a nice little market town with a dire traffic problem - the floral tributes on the pelican crossing said it all for me.
Extensive menu with some nice specials but 'healthy option' is something that happens elsewhere. Beer disappointing - either Greene King IPA or Morland Speckled Hen although I think the latter may change periodically. They might not welcome drunks but judging by the racket at closing time they are not averse to producing their own.

25 Sep 2007 17:03

The Halfway House, Rose Hill

Yet another pleasant lunch - food and ale remain consistantly good.

25 Sep 2007 10:17

The Old Plough, Seaford

Went there for a family lunch and was quite impressed. Nice town centre boozer with good selection of ales and good food to match. Menu fairly extensive with all the pub standards. Generous portions and very reasonable prices. Happy to go again - might see the cat next time.

20 Aug 2007 09:44

The Cock Inn, Ringmer

Stopped for a loo break a while back and determined to pay a proper visit. Booked a table and got 'flu the day before. Finally made it last Saturday and it was worth the wait. Nice drop of Harveys and very good food. Bar area a bit cramped but the restaurant is light, airy and comfortable. Definitely coming back.

6 Aug 2007 09:23

The Roseland Inn, Philleigh

Nice little rural boozer but nowhere near as good as it's web site would have you believe. Food prices are silly (5 for soup, 8 for a crab sandwich) - evidently they are playing on their Michelin rating, but given that Cornwall is pretty well off for decent pubs serving good food at reasonable prices you won't be missing much passing on this one.

10 Jul 2007 11:28

Lifeboat Inn, St Ives

To be honest I wasn't expecting much from this place given past experiences of pubs in the middle of tourist traps BUT very pleased to be proved wrong. Well kept beer and very good food. Yes there is a big telly but the sound was well down and not intrusive. A band was setting up as we left but I'm not sure if it was for the afternoon or evening trade.

9 Jul 2007 16:07

Punchbowl & Ladle, Feock

No complaints about this one. Good food, local ales and efficient and friendly service. I would imagine that it gets a bit hectic at weekends especially in the holiday season which might detract from the atmosphere but thems the breaks.

9 Jul 2007 10:06

The Grapes Inn, Falmouth

After a boat trip up the river where the wind proved colder and brisker than expected I felt in need of comfort. This place provided
a - a warm welcome
b - St Austell Tribute
c - Steak and ale pie with chips
A life saved!

9 Jul 2007 09:58

The Star and Garter, Falmouth

Excellent establishment overlooking the harbour with local ales and superb food - at last a pub chef who knows how to treat scallops!

9 Jul 2007 09:51

The Ingram Bar, Glasgow

Excellent city pub. Got a pint of Deuchars and sat by the window and watched the world go by. Only a pipe of baccy would have improved it but of course that ain't allowed no more. Haven't eaten there but the menu looks good.

14 May 2007 10:48

The Aldrington, Hove

Not been in but from the outside the refurb is finished and its been renamed 'The Wesybourne'. Remains to be seen if its enough to stop the annual summer mass streetfight.

16 Apr 2007 14:04

The Sun Inn, Marlborough

I haven't been to all the pubs in town but I wouldn't be surprised if the previous review was right. I wasn't particularly keen on the Ramsbury which was all that was on at the time but I couldn't fault the sarnies. I sort of wish that we had stayed here rather than the place up the road.

27 Mar 2007 09:58

The Drove, Newhaven

"I can't believe I went and did that stupid shit again" (Puke by Eminem.
For him it was remarrying Kim.
For me it was eating here.
Slow, inept staff whose attitude seemed to be that I was there to serve them. A mistreated pint of Spitfire (this should be made an arrestable offence) and variable food. My companion's curry was OK (presumably made off site and brought in) but I've seen better steaks on my cat's bum and there is more to grilling a tomato than scorching a raw one. The only saving grace is this one is better than the one in Cardiff.

5 Feb 2007 13:32

The Schooner Inn, Southwick

Met up for a drink with an old mate just after Christmas. We were the only two customers in the place and there was a definite air of hostility though thankfully not directed at us. Very good draught Guiness but after one we decamped to Carlas just up the road.

3 Jan 2007 17:16

The Drum Inn, Torquay

Whatever your opinion of Vintage Inns may be, you can't fault them for location. I just about know the M and B menu off by heart but the food is good and service friendly and efficient. The St Austell Tribute was very good - I could have camped down for the afternoon but the family had other ideas.

12 Dec 2006 13:39

The Swan Inn, Falmer

I first went in this place nearly 30 years back and then it was a real student's pub. These days there are better bars on campus. Not what I would call a village pub - the decor is a bit bland and I'm told the food isn't up to much. My pint of London Pride was shot so full of CO2 that I'm convinced this place is a major contributor to global warming. I give it another 30 years and then try it again.

12 Dec 2006 11:05

The Tiger Inn, East Dean

Been meaning to try this one for some time and I wasn't dissappointed. Excellent food and ale coupled with friendly service. Mrs Revbaz not overstruck on the stuffed animals and even less on my joke about how fast the tiger was going when he hit the other side of the wall. On nice days get in early as this is a popular area for walkers.

10 Oct 2006 16:40

The Village Inn, St Martin

Jersey Pub of the Year 2005 according to the sign and I can see why. Excellent food, ale and service. Not had a pint of Directors that good in a long time. Oddly though no local beers. In fact I didn't manage to get a pint of 'Mary Ann' all the time I was on the island - hmmm.

20 Sep 2006 12:33

The Anchor Inn, Storrington

Been past it a few times and finally took the plunge. Very pleasant indeed. London Pride, Anchor and Spitfire on the pumps and comfortable bar and restaurant areas. Fairly standard menu supplimented with some interesting specials and all nicely (and generously) presented. One for the list.

21 Aug 2006 09:27

The Red Lion Inn, Shoreham by Sea

Lovely cool refuge on a hot day. Impressive array of beers and a lovely old building. Food a big let down - chain pub quality at premium prices. Don't know about it being a coaching inn though. I grew up in Shoreham and was always told it used to be the town motuary at one time. Could do so much better.

7 Aug 2006 09:38

The Hare and Hounds, Kingskerswell

Quite impressed with this one. Large bar and dining area with a carvery and salad bar. Otter and Bombadier beers and an extensive menu. No complaints about the food or the service but I imagine that it gets a bit hectic at the weekends.

12 Jul 2006 13:46

The Coombe Cellars Devon, Coombe in Teignhead

Spectacular location right on the river which largely makes up for the fact that its a Brewers Fayre. Very popular but a sod to get to down narrow lanes. Staff seem a bit more mature than the usual run of BF adolescents which means the service is good as opposed to annoying. Don't waste your money on the 'Surf and Turf' - if thats what a King Prawn is then it must be a bloody small kingdom.

12 Jul 2006 13:38

The Pig and Whistle, Littlehempston

Always a favourite when we go down to Devon. Otter bitter(4.5) and Princetown Jail Ale (4.8) and an extensive menu beautifully prepared and presented. Sunday menu restricted mainly to roasts but the portions are generous - my beef came with two sorts of potato and six other vegs. Table service provided.

11 Jul 2006 14:08

The Old Plough House Inn, Duloe

Attractive and comfotable country pub with Sharpe's Doom Bar and two local ciders on tap. Excellent menu BUT the food service is poor. The pie ran out after two people ordered it which suggests it was the tail end of the weekend batch rather than freshly made. Our order took over 40 minutes to arrive despite the fact that one dish was scallops (3-4 minutes to cook?) and my wife's Vietnamese chicken was obviously microwaved. Other customers who arrived after us were fed first as presumably the effort of serving a dish outweighs when the order is placed. Sort your life out please!!

11 Jul 2006 13:57

The Old Inn, Widecombe in the Moor

I've had some dodgy experiences in pubs situated in tourist traps so I entered with some trepidation - totally unfounded. Superb establishment serving well kept Badger and excellent food. I can definately recommend the steak and ale pie. Quiet when I was there (mid week) but I imagine it can get very busy.

10 Jul 2006 13:59

Ensign Ewart, Edinburgh

Quite agree - I was the only Brit in the place apart from the landlady. Slighly curious menu - never encounted an Italian tosted cheese sandwich before, but quite tasty and served with plenty of salad. Nice drop of beer served with a smile.

22 Jun 2006 11:41

Ye Olde Smugglers Inn, Alfriston

Pleasant enough but could be so much better. Like other pubs in tourist spots I think there is a touch of 'captive audience syndrome' Beer fine and food OK but the menu is almost back to the basket era and everything comes with chips. If you are visiting by coach then you're stuck with it but if you come by car then there are much better establishments a short drive away.

15 May 2006 10:02

The Halfway House, Rose Hill

The first time I came here they had an unusual and slightly exotic menu ie ostrich. These days the menu is more staid but the food is good as is the beer. Could have done with another body behind the bar as even though the place wasn't even half full I must have waited the best part of ten minutes to get served and the barman couldn't remember more than one drink at a time. Even so we had a pleasant time and fully intend to come again.

3 May 2006 14:38

The Farmers Inn, Scaynes Hill

What with this place and The Sloop its a wonder anything gets done in Scaynes Hill. Well run welcoming establishment with good beer and better food.Highly enjoyable visit.

20 Mar 2006 13:32

The Half Way House, Portslade

I'm sure it's rating was well deserved but its now closed and boarded up.

28 Feb 2006 12:13

Bull, Ditchling

Agree completely with the foregoing comments. Food is excellent - a cross between 'hearty' and 'gastro'. A bit pricey compared to others in the area but worth it for a treat. The bar with the open fire is very dark - we needed the candles to read the menu! The place fills up fast - virtually empty at noon and packed by one. There were people waiting for our table when we left and others waiting for our car space outside. Very enjoyable experience.

21 Feb 2006 09:25

The Jack and Jill Inn, Clayton

Smashing country pub with regularly changing cask ales and an excellent menu. Their pies are particularly worth trying. Same owners as the Royal Oak a couple of miles up the road.

The Eight Bells, Jevington

Looks like its all been said for me. Incidently, if you notice any similarities between the menu here and the one at the Barley Mow its because the same chap owns both. As he also owns the Ram at Ripe I fully intend to check that out too.

The Sussex Ox, Milton Street

Can be tricky to find but worth the effort. Recently changed its emphasis and moved a bit towards 'Gastro' as opposed to 'Family'. Cosy bar area with open fire and a separate restaurant looking out over the downs. Harveys is the staple bitter but I believe the other two cask ales change from time to time. Food is very good and generously served. Warm welcome.

The Ancient Mariner, Hove

Refurbed and renamed "The Ancient Mariner". Haven't tried it since the change. Used to be a reasonable local boozer.

The Golden Galleon, Exceat

The comments on this place fall into two distinct categories. First there are the nostalgia whines bemoaning the fact that the place is now M & B which I can't help and secondly there are those who have received poor treatment of which I recently was one. I took my complaint straight to M & B's head office and to their credit the response from both the Galleon and M & B was positive and encouraging. My last visit was a real pleasure. This site is great for a good honest bitch but if you want something to change you have to take it to the man.

The Golden Galleon, Exceat

What were the chances that they would hack off the one person who has ever posted a good word about the place? Well they have and I won't be going back in a hurry. The gory details are set out in the two page letter of complaint dispatched to M and B's head office.

The Morning Star, Shoreham by Sea

Sorry folks - drove past it last Saturday and its boarded up. No idea if there are any plans to reopen.

23 Sep 2005 15:33

The Lamb Inn, Hindon

Rather more restaurant/hotel than pub/inn. Had a very nice meal there and the beer was pretty good too. I only wish I had spotted the five shelves of single malts before I started on the brandy. Damn!!!

19 Sep 2005 16:38

The Newmarket Inn, Lewes

Its back! Its been a pub, a restaurant, a Little Chef and shut for quite a while but its now been refitted and reopened. I'm impressed. Decor a little bland but comfortable. Heart sank when I saw the array of eurofiz taps but there are three cask ales. Food very good and generously served. (The steak and ale pie is a real slice of pie rather than a dollop of casserole with an applied puff pastry lid.) Staff friendly and eager to please. As Arnie would say - I'll be back.

14 Sep 2005 16:27

The Kingfisher Inn, Shillingford

Don't be put off by the somewhat austere outside appearance - this place is a real gem. Cask ale, comfortable rooms and superb food. Owners are the epitome of friendly hospitality. Definitely going back. Giving it 10/10 because the ratings don't go any higher.

5 Sep 2005 13:33

The Head of the River, Oxford

No problems with the staff but this place charges like a wounded rhino! Fifteen quid for two drinks, a sandwich and a bowl of soup. On the up side the beer was excellent but on the down side the soup looked like something Oliver Twist would have turned down. Unfortunately don't expect any changes as the location draws punters by the hundred.

5 Sep 2005 09:39

The Oystercatcher, Littlehampton

Its a Vintage Inn so its pretty much the same as all the others. Good food and friendly attentive staff. Beer not quite as well kept as others I've drunk in. Pretty thatched building with nice garden and plenty of parking.

22 Aug 2005 09:15

The Kings Arms, Winkleigh

I first came here in the early 70's when the owners were starting to provide pub food as we now know it. Subsequent visits in the 80's, 90's and this year have seen the pub grow and the standards rise. Real ales, local cider (from about half a mile away) and excellent food make this one a must. Parking a bit tricky at peak times and the old village has quite narrow street so the pub can be elusive unless you know your way around. This is the only 10/10 I will ever give.

22 Jul 2005 13:49

The Williams Arms, Wrafton

Given that the chef won 'Pub Chef of the Year' in 2003 I couldn't fault the food although my impression of the specials is that they are primarily competition winners rather than a reflection of local tastes. The only cask ale is Bass which seems odd given that there are several excellent breweries in the region. Staff efficient but slightly offhand. Given the high standard of Devon pubs this one doesn't stand out as much as it might if located elsewhere.

22 Jul 2005 13:40

The Old Smithy Inn, Welcombe

I can't really add to Sue's comments except to tell this little tale. My wife ordered tagliatelle and after a while the chef came and apologised for having no parmesan. When my wife said she was glad because she is on a low fat diet he then offered to make the pasta sauce without cream but with Italian ham to make up for the cream's absence. I'm not saying this happens all the time but it does illustrate the attitude of the staff towards their customers. Make sure you visit the pottery next door but watch the steps in the garden as they are a little steep.

19 Jul 2005 13:47

The Ship Inn Hotel, Porlock

13th century inn with a nice atmosphere and friendly staff. Real ales including Cotleigh's Barn Owl with which I was particularly impressed. Not an extensive menu but they do a hearty Sunday roast. You will, however, have to go easy on the free nibbles if you want to do it justice.

19 Jul 2005 13:35

The Grampus, Ilfracombe

NICE PUB SITUATED IN A TYPICAL NORTH DEVON COASTAL VILLAGE REACHED BY A LONG NARROW ROAD. THICK STONE WALLS AND SMALL WINDOWS PROVED THE IDEAL SOLUTION TO THE SCORCHING DAY WHEN WE VISITED ALTHOUGH THERE IS A GARDEN FOR THE MORE SUN TOLERANT. REAL ALES INCLUDING A 10% BITTER TO CELEBRATE THE ANNUAL GO-KART RACE (DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT IF YOU DROVE DOWN). EXCELLENT FOOD INCLUDING FRESH LOCAL FISH AND SEAFOOD. HELPFUL AND FRIENDLY STAFF.

18 Jul 2005 13:56

The Old Station House Inn, Kentisbury

'COACHES WELCOME' AND 'CARVERY' ARE SIGNS ON PUBS WHICH CAUSE ME A LITTLE UNEASE. VISIONS OF HORDES OF BLUE RINSERS DRINKING ORANGE JUICE AND LEMONADE OR CAREWORN PARENTS FEEDING JASON AND SASKIA WITH CHICKEN NUGGETS. WELL IT MIGHT BE LIKE THAT AT THE WEEKEND BUT NOT WHEN I WAS THERE. A LARGE AIRY BAR AND ADJOINING CARVERY WITH PANELLING, OLD FARM IMPLEMENTS AND RAILWAY PRINTS (STEAM RAILWAY JUST DOWN THE ROAD). AS YOU MIGHT EXPECT THE BEERS ARE EITHER EUROFIZ OR LCD (SEE MY PROFILE) BUT THERE ARE TWO REAL ALES AVAILABLE. QUALITY OF FOOD VERY GOOD WITH EVERYTHING PREPARED ON THE PREMISES WHICH MUST BE HELL FOR THE STAFF WHEN THE COACHES HIT TOWN. BEST TO VISIT WHEN ITS QUIET. STAFF FRIENDLY AND EFFICIENT.

18 Jul 2005 13:41

The Cricketers Arms, Berwick

Midsomer without the murders! This is everyone's image of what an English country pub should be. Low ceilings, cask ales, cottage garden and great food. Very good menu and wine list supplemented by some interesting specials including vegetarian. My only moan is that there wasn't a low fat dish (apart from fish) on the day of my visit which meant my companion was a bit stuck for choice, but on other days this could well be different. I have this dream about going back for the crab salad with a glass of Chablis. At weekends either get in early or book.

30 Jun 2005 17:02

The Berwick Inn, Berwick

Tried to have lunch here about a month ago. Turned up just before noon but no signs of activity. One or two staff arrived a few minutes later but could not detect any cooking activity. The sign that used to read 'Food served all day, every day' has had the 'all day' bit painted out. A pity if they have restricted their activities as I recall the food and ale being very good.

23 Jun 2005 16:47

The Barley Mow, Selmeston

Very good establishment indeed. Had a brief flirtation with brasserie cuisine a while ago but has now fallen back on it's real strength - high quality pub food and well kept beer. Can't fault the portion sizes either. Friendly efficient staff and excellent facilities. Advisable to book at weekends and public holidays.

21 Jun 2005 09:46

The Black Horse, Cherhill

After being ignored in the Red Lion, Avebury, my wife and I resolved to stop at the first pub we came to. The druids must have been smiling that day. Airy comfortable bar, excellent food and ale. Not sure if I really needed the curly fries with my ham ciabatta (especially as it was a very generous size to start off with) but Mrs Reverendbaz was very impressed with the fresh strawberries. Definitely coming back and happy to recommend.

16 Jun 2005 13:26

Ocean Park, Cardiff

A Brewers Fayre pub and it does it's owners no credit whatsoever. The local ale (Braines) OK but not to my taste and the food is poor - tastless and badly prepared. My 'well done' steak was bloody in the middle and my wife's pasta was welded to the plate it was microwaved on. At the next table a customer was complaining about the lack of meat in his cottage pie. The Brewers Fayre website has a banner that reads 'Can't be bothered to cook?'. Looks like they followed their own advice. This place does no favours to the Travel Inn next door.

14 Jun 2005 11:52

The William IV, Brighton

My two 'must do's' when coming to Brighton are breakfast from the burger wagon in Churchill Square and lunch in the 'Willy'. Actually I've been using the place on and off for about 30 years now and I love it. A typical town centre pub in the traditional mould. Friendly staff, excellent draught Guiness, a smashing place to sit and watch the world go by. Pub rather than restaurant menu - sandwiches, bagettes etc but all fresh as a daisy and nicely presented.

14 Jun 2005 09:56

The Golden Galleon, Exceat

I'm glad to say its got it's act together since 2004. I've eaten here two or three times this year and the food is very good for both quality and quantity. Never knew it had it's own brewery but with Harveys on draught who cares. If you want to know more try the Mitchells and Butler web site under Vintage Inns.
My only real quibble is that you can't book a table and at lunchtime the place fills up fast.

13 Jun 2005 13:35

The Five Bells, Chailey

Excellent food and well kept beer in comfortable and friendly surroundings. A little pricier than others round here but not enough to put you off. Not an extensive menu but I always regard this as a good sign - better to do a few things well. Lack of a chicken dish on the day of my visit was a surprise to me and a disappointment to my wife and the candles would be better suited to the evening rather than Saturday lunchtime but overall a pleasureable experience.

6 Jun 2005 12:54

The Angel, Hindon

Stayed a couple of nights this May. Room warm, clean and comfortable. Good beer. Good traditional Sunday roast and a cooked breakfast to die for. Evening menu a bit limited but this may have been due to the two course promotion on at the time. Attractive building and surroundings. Staff friendly and helpful.

3 Jun 2005 17:03

The Red Lion, Avebury

I visited this pub in May 2005 and although it advertised food being available there was no evidence of it even at 1 pm. I couldn't even ask as despite waiting for 15 minutes in the bar no member of staff appeared.
