user reviews of the Olde White Rose, Bilston

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Couldn't agree more with a previous post, came here a few years ago when it was in the GBG, this time seriously run down. Only two ales on Holdens Golden Glow and Wye Valley Butty Bach. It was strange that a random customer asked me if the beer was ok, even before I'd tasted it!

Looks like it should be a good pub from the outside, inside it`s quite a large place, traditional wood floors, olde décor and large bar. Couple of real ales on which was in decent nick. regulars seemed friendly enough for a Sunday afternoon. Worth a visit if your in the vicinity.

Went last night ... the pub is a shadow of its former self

Only 4 guest ales on last night, we had the abbott reserve which I must say was kept well

German and Belgian beer taps have now gone

A very loud disco was playing which seemed really out of place

There were very few patrons, seemed more huddling outside the front door smoking.

What a shame as I used to love this pub and previously rated it 9 on here

I've been less than impressed with this place in the past but fair does, the RCH Old Slug I had in here the other night was the best I've tasted for a long time, and one of the best pints of any beer I've had recently.

Luckily there were few people in as there was only one serving behind the bar - it's always understaffed. It's a lot cleaner than it has been though. The owner tends to let the pub run down before spending money on it rather than keeping on top all the time. It's still inconsistent but when it's on form this is a pub worth visiting.

This pub was far better than I expected, with 11 beers and a couple of real ciders in the fridge. Last weekend the beer range was Herok & Howells Festival Ale, Greene King Old Golden Hen & IPA Reserve, Theakston Old Peculier, Holdens Black Country Special Bitter, Sarah Hughes Dark Ruby Mild, Slaters Retro Red & Top Totty, Craftons Binary Geek, RCH Santa F and Beowulf Dragon Smoke Stout. The 2 Westons ciders were Old Rosie & Traditional Scrumpy. This pub seems to serve all manner of people. During the day, it has a fair few local drinkers and people coming for the carvery at the rear. On some evenings, it becomes a live music venue. There is accommodation too. The locals and the staff were all very friendly and service was prompt. A beer festival had been held the weekend before our visit. Well recommended and handy for the Bilston metro stop. I must also recommend the fish and chip shop opposite the metro stop. The chips were the best I've tried in years.

I have been in this pub before but my friend hadn't so we jumped off the tram and headed for it. It advertised 11 am opening but at 11.40 the doors were still shut so we moved on to The Trumpet. On the way back we noticed it had now opened but as time was short and the beer range - while extensive - didn't offer anything really exciting, we moved on. (Greene King seem to be getting their beers into quite a few free houses in this part of the country). Another day perhaps?

The only real quality pub in Bilston. Best selection of real ales in the area by far. Good food, not fine dining, but if you like good pub food at a reasonable price, and freshly cooked on the premises, you'll like this and has a good carvery. Lacks entertainment but otherwise a well run honest pub
DesiC - 20 Mar 2012 10:18
Nice enough town cente pub with a few ales on. Had a pint of Greys Bitter but as pointed out, they do seem understaffed at times.

Not so much a review as a piece of advice. If you're two minutes walk from a gig venue it might be a good idea to check what's on at said venue. That way, when a well-known band who always fill the place are performing, you can have more than one staff member serving. Then you might not have a queue three deep at your bar, resulting in many of them going elsewhere after waiting 15 minutes to gets served.

Stepped in to be greeted with 12 real ale pumps, all full! Pity I was a few beers deep already having been up the road, as this could definitely be a good session pub to try a whole selection of beers! The one pint of Golden Hen I did have was very nice indeed. They also had the carvery on where I got a good fill of food for not too much money. Definitely will go again when I'm in the area

Went in today.

Busy, thriving and a good selection of ales on. It seemed a bit hit and miss. Some really good, some average, and a couple really poor.

the food we ordered was quickly served, but being honest, not the best quality. OK for cheap and cheerful it soaks up the ale but presentation was a bit lacking and it seemed to lack any real taste. On the whole not bad but nothing to really sing home about either.

I live the Rose, its got character and it doesn't pretend to be anything other than a boozer. No frills, no airs no graces. If you want spick and span then this really isn't the place for you, but if you want a rough and ready midlands boozer then this should be right up your street.

On a side note however, friends of mine stopped in the recently opened hotel annex part, and to say they gave it good reviews is understating. Apparanlty its superb so if your in Bilston and looking for somewhere to stay, this is the place. From all accounts you won't be disappointed....

Used to be one of the best pubs in the Midlands - sadly on the slide recently.
Food has gone seriously downhill since the previous chef left.
The only good thing going for the pub are the two very enjoyable quizzes - General Knowledge on a Tuesday and Entertainment on a Wednesday, which are very relaxed and laid back.
Would be great if the owner could turn things around.

Visited here twice this week. Once prior to a visit to the Robin and then via the Metro pub crawl. On both occasions the beer could have been better. Pity.

The olde white rose is a permanent beer festival and they offer 10p a pint off for card carrying camra members.
They always have 12 different beers on.
Last night (Saturday night) I chose Brewdog Paradox and I only had half as it was a 10%er - in superb condition too. I then went for Palmers Tally Ho - another dark beer and that too was in excellent condition.
The missus had a half of Fullers Summer Ale was again in fine fettle.
I love this pub and can't wait to go again.

beerychris - 3 Oct 2010 11:01
Went in last week and was pleasantly surprised.

Cleaner.

Better beer.

Staff looking hygienic.

Credit where credits due.
tiptonred - 1 Oct 2010 20:41
12 ales as mentioned previously including Ironbridge, Bewdley, Big Lamp, Marble and somewhat strangely Fullers. Carvery was excellent and good value. Beers tasted ok to me. Recommended.
GuideDogSaint - 5 Sep 2010 18:06
Visited yesterday lunchtime. Pretty busy with many customers dining from what looked like a reasonably priced menu.

12 beers on ranging from 2.45 to 2.60. Tried 2 which I could omly describe as OK rather than good. Possibly doesn't get enough thoughput during the day?

Service a bit slow but, as I said, it was pretty busy.

Strangely, the pub at the front was extremely hot and stuffy whilst the room at the back (complete with sacks of spuds and veg - don't they have any storage room?) was freezing.
cheshirecat - 14 May 2010 09:36
One of the best pubs for real ale in the Black Country, the beer range and quality is fantastic, with often up to 12 on and frequently several over 5%
for example Thornbridge Jaipur IPA on my last visit.
There is a small discount on your pint if you show your camra card when ordering.
Posh the pub ain't, but the carvery (thur-sun only) is absolutely superb!
Can't believe average rating of only 7.
Pub can be very busy, close to metro and bus stations.
Andythebaggie - 3 Dec 2009 08:41
Great selection of ales (12 i think) featuring several of the usual suspects locally but also some rare finds. Rammed on a saturday afternoon about 4, which meant the only place to stand or sit was the room at the back which was full of cauliflowers, a warm damp room full of culiflowers, not the best aroma to enjoy a tasty ale with. if you're passing while on the meto or going to the Robin it's well worth a visit.
mattyboy - 19 Nov 2009 10:18
Visited as suggested before a gig at Robin2. Lots of blokes of a certain age had the same idea and a quiz was also about to start, so very busy. Hardly anyone was eating but lots of cask beer was being supped. The Salamander Tatooed Lady was impressive.
Unfortunately the guy behind the bar overcharged me for my second pint which left a bad taste[excuse the pun]
saddler - 5 Nov 2009 21:26
The pub is basically one long room, with food served down the far end and the pub and bar by the entrance. There is also a cellar, where folk and other music nights have been held. Its often busy, so the service is functional rather than friendly and the food is fine.

I dont think it is as dirty as others have made out. gillhalfpint hits it on the head when she says it could do with a bit of a spruce up, as it doesnt glow like a kid after Ready Break, but talk of rats is unfair, i think.

The choice of ales is excellent, along with Theakston's MILD, always means we visit this place. The MILD is consistantly good, sadly, not all of the other beers are. Last night was an example of this, but in general they are very good.

Whilst i would rate this pub higher than cannockchaser has, he is completely right, as far as i am concerned, in the fact that it should score even higher.
Archivist - 20 Jun 2009 13:00
I dread to think what the supposed hotel is going to be like if the state of his pub is anything to go by....

Rumour has it the rats have even left its so dirty.

p1sshead - 18 May 2009 00:03
If you are visiting the Robin2 for music, then drink here beforehand. A mini - beer festival is guaranteed on any given day - 12 real ales on offer on my last visit, including bitters, milds, porters, microbrews and some 8% Fullers product that should have come with a danger sign on the pump clip! The carvery also looked bostin'!
dableywolf - 26 Apr 2009 22:06
This pub has to be the best in the area. OK it could do with a bit of a clean up, but the carvery is one of the best I have ever been to for heaps of tender meat and loads of veg superbly cooked. The price is so very reasonable too for the amount of choice. On to the ales and what can I say. At this visit we stayed longer than planned as the choice was great, and all in tip top condition. One to stop off the metro for any time.
gillhalfpint - 8 Feb 2009 12:15
What a strange place.

If first impressions were anything to go by you would turn around and walk right out the door. Grotty would be an understatement. I dont know who does the cleaning but a P45 would perhaps be the owners first action.

The staff were friendly enough, but a little bit of attention to personal appearance wouldnt go amiss. Bar staff isnt so much a problem, but the staff in the kitchen should make more of an effort,. Especially when they are serving on a carvery.

The beers.. What can you say.. the choice is stupendous. I've only seen a choice like this in one other pub. If you cant find a drink you like in this pub you wont find one anywhere. The real ales are all satisfactory. Not the best I hasten to add, but certainly ddrinkable. THe prices are a bit high, but in this current climate thats the way it goes.

This pub does have charm, and could definitely be the top pub in the area. Just the owner needs to pay a bit more attention to cleanliness and hygiene. A lot more attention in fact.

This pub is wonderful, or could be wonderful if the owner would improve his standards of cleanliness and appearance.

His standards with refards to what he offers is exceptional. His standards with regards to the qualify of what he offers and cleanliness are to be quite honest, severely lacking..

I will rate this pub 6/10. It could be a 9 if the owner had higher standards.
cannockchaser - 21 Oct 2008 15:30
If you are visiting The Robin, get in here first for a cracking selection of beers.
LickeyEndBooze - 9 Sep 2008 18:22
This pub doesn't look much outside and to be honest it could do with a bit of a clean-up with a mop and bucket of Flash. However, try not to let this put you off, the pub is friendly with lots of local characters in abundance. There were 12 real ales available when I visited and I found myself staying much longer than I anticipated - slurp. Would definately return. A 30 mins journey from Birmingham Snow Hill to Bilston station - the pub is a 3 mins walk from the station.
as025 - 10 Aug 2008 22:47
Nice big pub with a massive selection of beers.I usually go for the Theakstons mild which is class.Dr's verdict - worth catching the metro for.
TheCasualDoctor - 21 Jul 2008 20:59
I was recommended the Olde White Rose as a great pub for beer and food as I was attending a gig at the Robin 2. My first impressions were favourable, nothing fancy, just a straight forward pub. I ordered a pint of lager, keenly priced at 2.40 and relaxed in the homely surroundings.
I decided I liked the pub and went to the bar to order food and another drink. As I tried to pay I was told that they could not accept Scottish bank notes, having travelled from the west of Scotland it was all I had. I explained to the barmaid that Scottish notes were also pounds Sterling and no different from English ones. She said it was the boss who had stipulated that she could not accept Scottish notes.
Scottish notes are widely accepted all over the UK and this was the first time I had encountered this in years. As a point of law it is true that Scottish notes are not "legal tender" in either Scotland or England, it is also the case that English notes are not "legal tender" in Scotland or anywhere else but England.
In Scotland we would never refuse your English "not legal tender" notes so why should Scots have to put up with this English sectarianism.
I am extremely disappointed in this pub and everywhere else around Bilston my Scottish notes were welcomed without a second glance. Maybe time this pub dragged itself out of the dark ages!!
PurplePenguin29 - 12 Dec 2007 14:13
Excellent choice of beers, I could have stayed in here all night.Handy for the Robin round the corner (where i was heading).nice pleasant surroundings
Tippler - 11 Jul 2007 02:17
One of the last pubs I visited on a recent crawl of the area, but I couldn't miss it out as there is always a good choice of real ales on. It was packed to overflowing, but we got prompt service and the beers were excellent.
gillhalfpint - 6 Jul 2007 11:38
How about employing a cleaner ?

anonymous - 21 May 2007 04:23
that man is worng about the pub the food is great it it good for the money 4.95 for 3 slices n 5 slices 6.95 5 veg as well as roast, new n mash all fresh not frozen go there try it ont your self
pub_lover_78 - 20 Jan 2007 23:43
This pubs not as good as it used to be which is a pity because it used to be the best pub in the area.

I suggest they tidy the place up a bit and get the old chef back. The carverys OK, but recently its dropped off alot.

Its still a good place to drink but not as good as before and the foods really gone downhill. The owner needs to get back on the ball...
midlands_drinker - 13 Jan 2007 11:01
If you think prices are high here you should try the Welly in Birmingham...no no no am just kiddin (Both pubs are excellent). You will not get a better choice of ales (especially in terms of quantity) anywhere else in Wolverhampton. To be fair I reckon the average price of an ale there is 2.15. Landlord John keeps the pub well supplied with many different Ales! If you're a CAMRA member you can get 10p off per pint of Real Ale. My mate Andy goes there reguarly and saves literally pounds every year! I agree with the comments about the carvery, though I would advise anyone thinking of going there on a Sunday to get there EARLY - well before 1pm as it gets ridiculously busy! Go there in the week though and you're sorted!
JJINTHEPUB - 11 Nov 2006 12:37
One of our very favourite pubs in the area.

Yes it sometimes can be smokey but not as much as it used to but isn't too bad as my Dad (a reformed smoker - so you know what that means!) likes it.

Food is extremely good, both the carvery and menu meals are really good value and very filling.

The staff are always friendly and helpful and will give advice on the beers (unless really busy).

It has also recently been redecorated.

Great Quiz NIghts, Entertainment and usually at least one beer festival a year (not one this year as the owner purchased and refurbished the Port n Ale in Great Bridge).

As regards the beer prices mentioned by one of the earlier reviews, most beer prices are around 2.10 a pint but obviously as in many pubs it depends on the price charged by the brewer or wholesaler and some are more expensive than others.

Nevertheless a great local pub.

crosswordqueen - 30 Oct 2006 10:53
More grub than you can eat for a fiver
go back for more veg, 3 slices of meat like three steaks

smoky, poor surroundings, a bit grubby, a desert in an oasis
no jukebox, plenty of groups drop in, good local support
Always busy, quiz nights and entertaiment.

Always friendly, brilliant selection of beers, so much so we travel from birmingham regular, just to get a good nights beer

As stated before Kwak on draught, sometimes Leffe Bruin, wheat beer, belgian beers, trappist monk in a stick of beer.

An all round good CAMRA pub and a well deserved review. 8.5 out of 10

crseel - 28 Aug 2006 12:07
great pub, great guest beers, not too pricey. not tried the food but it seems like a well balanced good value menu. really nice friendly people in there. recommended
diamondflamer - 10 Aug 2006 17:15
Finished off our Birmingham mini MILD trail by jumping off the tram in Bilston to see what was on offer here. No MILD this time but they had Eastwood & Sanders 1872 6.5% Porter. 2.50 a pint so only had a half, I thought it was the cut that flowed through Bilston not the bloody Thames.
Stus.search.4.mild - 25 Jun 2006 23:00
Friendly biker's pub with huge range of beers. Easilly
accessible by public transport -- a must for any Black country crawl.
Uncle_Dunkel - 26 Feb 2006 19:58
Great pub close to Bilston Central on the Metro with good selection of beer styles. Good food reasonably priced and beers sampled were 2.10 a pint, very cheap compared with the London prices I'm used to. Punters and staff friendly. Enjoyed the visit and will call again when next in the West Midlands.
canastajim - 28 Jan 2006 22:31
What a fantastic place!! I went to the Robin 2 last night to a gig and was just walking down the road and came across a nice looking pub. When I went inside............Aladin's cave!!! 12 beers on handpull with some reallu unusual ones too. Belgian and German beers on tap including Kwak which I have never seen on tap before, and more wines and spirits than you could mention. The food sounded really nice too with a fantastic range and prices that were really reasonable. Beers start at 2.00 and don't go that much above that with 10p a pint off for CAMRA members that show their membership card! Shame I was on the bike. Now,.......... what times do the trains run to Bilston?
DoctorWu - 10 Oct 2005 13:14
A Camra award winning pub, it boasts up to 10 real ales on at any one time. Smoky bar by the door leads all the way down through 2 rooms to a beer garden. Plenty of seating, with friendly and knowledgable staff. People come from miles around to sample the ale, helped by being just by the entrance to the Metro and bus station. Becoming famous for it's carvery which is on every night and all Sunday afternoon, the portions are huge and the rest of the menu is very well priced and caters for all sorts. Try the chicken combo for 6, easily enough for 3 normal people. A popular pub that is well known with real ale drinkers in the wolverhampton area.
