user reviews of The Standard Inn, Rye

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Possibly more of a restaurant than a pub although they had hood local ales on including an offering from the Three Legs Brewing Company. Food isn’t so cheap but we got round that by ordering starters and sides – great chips, cabbage, a crab hotpot and sourdough toast. The building, like almost everywhere in Rye, is pleasant indeed.

Three or four local ales on, in good condition. It's on the high street so seemed busy with tourists and families. Staff were efficient but it didn't feel much like a "local".
Nice enough place, fairly smart, decent food and still fine to have a beer and not eat. (I was on holiday myself so can't comment on how it used to be back in the day!)

The Standard has has undergone a major refurb and now offers B&B.

When we visited on a Sunday afternoon, the place was packed, with what looked like a few regulars at the bar, a handful of dogs and a lot of families eating. Food is now a big feature of in the Pub and what I saw looked good prices seemed sensible (for Rye) too. I had just the one pint of Farmers ale as there was nowhere to sit or for that matter stand, without having to move and let people by. The Farmers Ale (which I hadn't had before) was fresh tasting and well kept. A nice pint and it was selling well.

The refurb is of a high quality its an attractive place, if a little formulaic but I do miss the old Standard and its eccentric clientele. It was dark, grubby but had a character you just don't find anymore.

This place used to be the heart of Rye, but the Landlord has moved on. Shame.

Really nice pub with good beer and good food. I had mussels and a pint of Hastings Best. We were going to stay in the Ship, but that is definitely overrated - more like a restaurant with the usual w*****s you get in pubs like that. There is also a lovely beer garden out the back, but the weather was a bit off to enjoy it.

I have visited most of the pubs in Rye, but this has to be my favourite, even though its not mentioned in any of the 'Guides'. A genuine back street boozer, cosy and comfortable, great beers, an really good atmosphere. Next time I'm back in the town I will definitely call in.
happy_wanderer - 26 Feb 2012 16:57
Almost exactly the same experience as The Beefeater had below. Scores 1/10 for - errr - location I suppose. Go to the Ship for exemplary service.

Popped in for a quick drink and found it to be the sort of place to linger in. Only 1 beer on draught, which was unknown to me and I can't remember its name but it was a light summer ale and was in good condition. The pub appears to be popular with dogs and their owners and the food looked good. Will stay longer the next time I am in Rye.

I recently moved down to the area and took a few friends into Rye for the evening. Whilst this pub looked appealing from the outside we went in and noticed what I can only describe as a crust down the outside of the beer taps. That along with a pungent smell of cleaning products put us off ordering a pint.

It maybe a good pub but I wasn't prepared to take my chance with this one as I was concerned the inside of the lines were as filthy as the taps

Recently moved to Rye and this has become the main pub of choice for a few drinks. Friendly locals and bar staff, Slightly shambolic in an amusing way - wine list consists of two - red or white! Food is reasonable pub food (not that it matters overly, this is after all BEER in the evening). If you're looking for sophisticated drinks on your weekend away from London then forget it but if you want a beer in pleasant surroundings then I would recommend it - My wife and dog also highly recommend their open fire!

Although we were among the first customers that evening, there seemed to be some things on the short evening menu that they didn't have and there was some confusion about what they actually did have. After ordering, we waited 35 minutes for our meal to come. I had soup which was way too salty. My husband's meal was a very small pie and half-cooked chips. When the waitress came to take our plates she asked if everything was OK. I explained why it wasn't but she just said 'oh'., no apology, no discount, which made me wonder why she'd bothered asking in the first place. One to avoid.

Maybe I was unlucky, but my experience was completely at odds with the many favourable reviews.
After entering, I was left standing without service, even though the only other customers were three young men of little more than the legal drinking age. The similarly callow barman was too engrossed in sharing some private joke with them to respond to the arrival of a paying customer.
The delay enabled me to register the jungle rhythms thumping from the loudspeakers, the preponderance of lagers over real ales and the general absence of the ambience one would expect to find in an old pub in one of Rye's celebrated cobbled streets.
So I went out without ordering and went down the hill to The Ship Inn, where the pleasant barmaid promptly pulled me a splendid pint of Harveys.
I would advise discriminating visitors to the Standard to take a few seconds to size up the place before committing themselves to an order.

If I have one complaint about The Standard it is this - You have a job to get in as it's so packed, which tells it's own story. You can here the cheery atmosphere float down the pavements and it adds a warmness to your welcome here, a happy crowd in a happy pub.

Harveys was very good too, will be back.
MisterX - 26 Apr 2010 03:36
This is a fairly small, traditional pub at the western end of the High Street. Low-ceilinged with wooden partitions, this was a warm, welcoming pub on a cold winter's night. Three pumps, serving Harveys, White Brewery Chilly Willy and something else which I couldn't identify, but appeared to have mead in the name. The Harveys was good.
The pub was heaving on my two visits. Of the three pubs I visited in Rye this was my favourite and certainly the most popular.
holbornboy - 3 Feb 2010 22:23
The Standard is somewhere Ive always included on my Rye pub crawls. Whilst on my last visit, I branded them as average, this time Im going to knock them up to 7/10, if only for the fact that they (usually) have an obscure ale on, and that the epically bosomed young ladies behind the bar dont do much to conceal their charms (!)
MankyBadger - 15 Nov 2009 11:17
Was there recently and although not busy the service was almost non existant. One of the worst pubs in Rye for service.
hopbine - 29 Dec 2008 15:18
was in there on friday....fantastic bar staff and great harveys......
cranfield - 24 Nov 2008 14:59
Great, unpretentious local boozer with young friendly staff who seem to enjoy being there.
Beats most other pubs in Rye for its traditional atmosphere and lack of 'down from London' front that is ruining a lot of the other hostelries in this town.
Superb Harveys too!
adrianboult - 14 Sep 2008 16:18
A nice pub with a friendly landlord and barstaff. Some decent beers and great food (the best ploughman's in Rye).
Folkey - 29 May 2008 12:08
A good un-spoiled pub which has improved greatly since a management buy-out in 2007. Harvey's bitter usually available, and a couple of other guest beers. Very much a younger person's haunt in the evening, lunchtimes are quieter. Food is good, but the service can be a bit slow. Anyone wanting fast food, naff chrome furniture or London-style faux Victoriana should avoid it. Those of us that like a proper, slightly eccentric, friendly (very)old pub will find it refreshing (no pun intended). The landlord (Jonathan) is a real one-off, very theatrical, charming (and a friend of Dorothy's!).
gruntfuttock - 23 Mar 2008 20:26
A pub with a limited but well kept real ale selection, friendly bar staff and good food.
mikecterry - 10 Feb 2008 22:21
Well, it's not a bad pub. There's a good choice of ales.
But it's not *good* either. And bearing in mind you can see "The Bell" from the front door, and could throw a stone and hit the "Pipemakers", there's a lot better pubs very close by.
MankyBadger - 11 Nov 2007 20:08
Very impressed by the smoking shelter that actually keeps you dry. Harveys is good and staff were friendly. All in all a nice little pub.
anonymous - 2 Jul 2007 12:03
Great to see that the tables have been stripped and polished (not sticky any more), toilets being rennovated and a fully operational smoking shelter in readiness for tomorrow's ban!
anonymous - 30 Jun 2007 17:26
Used to love this pub but since my last visit a year ago,its become more like a dysfunctional youth club .The tall, rather disturbed-looking bar"boy" who was on during my visit appears to be a sociopath and was drunk, rude and annoying, more interested in showing off to his inbred mates than serving anyone.Whats wrong with adult bar staff?Harveys was good however. Definitely not for grown ups, although the restaurant out back apparently has a good reputation,if you dont mind wading through the retards to get there, that is.Depressing.
parsons - 19 Jun 2007 15:32
Visited on a Tuesday evening. Although the beer was OK, I would have preferred the barmaid to stop talking to her friends and cleaned the dirty sticky tables. Background music drowned our conversation. If the kitchen is as dirty as the pub, I certainly would not eat here.
pissedasanewt - 21 Feb 2007 18:56
the best pub in rye by far but whats going on with the toilets??? maybe its a medieval theme or they are listed or something? they cant be like that out of choice?
anonymous - 18 Dec 2006 21:38
Very overpriced food of an OK sort of standard, seems to be a bit of a theme locally? maybe all the publicans are trying to fleece the tourists?
townvisitor - 25 Oct 2006 09:13
Agree with Oldsod, went in there on a monday night and it was packed, everywhere else in the town was practically deserted .Young sort of studenty crowd in there.
TSW - 24 Oct 2006 19:20
I like this pub. It's one of the few in the area i do like. The food was awful, but they've now implemented a fresh menu which incorporates better-than-it-was food at quite an expensive price for what you get. Haven't tried the 'resturaunt' out the back as it's a little pricey and you have to go for one of the set menus.

What I do like however, is the pubs ability to be busy most nights of the week. A lot of youngsters seemingly meet there and subsequently it can be somewhat rowdy at times... but there's nothing offensive, and you can often get a pint of Harveys. One of Ryes better pubs.
Oldsod - 19 Oct 2006 00:49

Really nice old pub, not full of tourists. Had Bombadier, Harveys & Archers on tap, also good reasonably priced food.

doug_g - 30 Aug 2005 20:10
A very old building which remains a traditional pub with decent real ales, dart board and pool. Popular with locals of different ages. Music on Wednesday evenings. Lots of tourists Sunday lunch times. Rather hidden away patio at the back which is a good spot for an early evening drink in summer. Much improved since new landlord in 2004.
D.Bookless - 1 Apr 2005 11:58
A very nice little pub, good beer and a good atmosphere. Agree it is a locals haunt but find this to be quite nice too. New landlord is an improovement on previous owner as someone else said!
anonymous - 21 Jan 2005 19:07
Unimpressed with the ale. Alright but nothing to write home about. Certainly an improvement from it's previous owner, but as aforementioned, a bit of a "locals haunt" and although nice, not the most welcoming of places. 5/10.
Alex M - 11 Oct 2004 18:26
New owner/landlord from mid Nov but appears still to care for the ale on offer. Bit quiet when we called in but may have been due to it being early evening (6pm) on a wet Saturday
lout_from_the_lane - 28 Nov 2003 12:08
Decent real ale from the Old Forge brewery.
Bit of a locals haunt but a good atmosphere. Pool table out the back
