The Somerville Arms, Leamington Spa

I enjoyed calling in to the Sommerville arms but was probably expecting a little more. The atmosphere was quiet, although I probably went on the wrong night. The so called wide range of real ales turned into a list of the usual suspects which was a bit dissapointing. I have to admit when I left I couldnt find anything better. I feel Leamington is a beer desert and if the sommerville put their mind to it they could really clean up. Just my opinion.

Old Mint, Southam

This was once a fabulous pub with a wide choice of quality ales. Unfortunatley although the atmosphere is still good it has lost its old appeal and is now another pub destined to mediocrity.

The Norman Knight, Whichford

The wizard brewery made this visit rather special. Excellent beer with friendly staff and a good stop for fellow walkers.

The Little Lark, Studley

An impressive and popular village local. The bar staff were very friendly and food was excellent. The beer range was not very extensive as the guest had just run out. Still it was a very good pub a well worth popping into.

George Hotel, Kilsby

A impressive building standing just off the A5. The range of ales were rather predictable and boring although the food looked very good. Friendy staff add to a good locals atmosphere.

The Church End Brewery Tap, Nuneaton

A bit off the beaten track and even when you get there its still down a little lane.It looks more like a football changing room than a brewery tap but besides the lack of atmosphere the beer is impressive. I enjoyed it but still prefer a traditional pub.

The Butchers Arms, Priors Hardwick

Lets first say that this is a top quality restaraunt. Unfortunately it pretends to be a pub. They have a very impressive wine list and an excellent menu. But nobody knows a thing about ale. It reminds me of the Park Lane Hilton where I had a fabulous meal but they could only manage a bottle of Becks. Someone who appericates food and wine should also appreciate ale. They have this wrong. I have now found a number of top London restraunts that appreciate quality speciality ales and they could show the Butchers arms a thing or two. What about some speciality bottled beers next time Im there? A bottle of Chimay Grand reserve retails at about 12 a bottle and would be a great alternative to the creamflow on offer. Just my opinion.

The Broom Tavern, Broom

A very impressive building with a lovely feel to it. The staff are friendly and welcoming. Beers were rather too main stream and could have been more imaginative.

The Anker Inn, Nuneaton

A very friendly atmosphere with pleasant bar staff. Didnt try the food but it looked very good. The beer choice was a little unimaginative but this is a good pub well worth a try.

The Victoria Inn, Rugby

The last time I was in The Victoria it was quiet with very bland beer and a grumpy old landlord who asked me to leave. I honestly couldnt belive the difference when I popped in last Wednesday. Ten yes ten beers were on tap along with some mind blowing perry. The place was heaving and everybody seemed to be having a good time. I enjoyed the Atomic ales which I had tried to get at the Alexandra Arms! This must be the most improved pub I have been in this year!!

The Bear, Long Lawford

A typical modern estate pub. Friendly staff and a good mix of clientele. Unfortunately the beer was very mediocre with a dismal choice from Charles Wells.

The Golden Lion Inn, Easenhall

The original pub still retains a wealth of original features although the addition of a huge new hotel/restarant have rather spoilt this village inn. The ale choice was limited and of course creamflows and largers are now more the norm. They did have one or two exciting ales in the old bar the last time I was in.

The Merchants Inn, Rugby

One of the best pubs in Rugby A very good atmosphere coupled with a good selection of ales make this well worth a visit. Friendly staff even if one or two had no idea what they were selling. Food good especially the Sunday roasts.

The St Thomas Cross, Rugby

A very friendly pub just out of town. Good grub and a noisey darts team add to the atmosphere. Sport is shown on a regular basis. The beer choice was a bit mediocre for a supposed free house could do better in that respect.

The Squirrel Inn, Rugby

A true little gem. No good if you are 6ft 6 or more!! Beer selection good considering the size of the pub although very pricey for some guests. 2.60 for a 3.6% mild is a bit OTT.Friendly couple who run the pub make everyone feel friendly.

Seven Stars, Rugby

A decent drinkers pub with a good if unimaginative range of beers.Very opressive before the smoking ban but now much imporoved.

20 Nov 2007 22:28

The Alexandra Arms, Rugby

A nice little pub near the car park. Pleasant landlord and good staff make this a welcoming pub. Add to this a sensible chice of real ales and its very own brewery and you cant go too far wrong.
