Ounce & Ivy Bush, East Grinstead

I'm not a Wetherspoon fan but this pub exceeded expectations. Amazing variety of Surrey Hills ales along with Doom Bar and a good choice of cider on pumps. The Ranmore was amazing. Probably the best Wetherspoon's I've ever been too

The Feathers, Merstham

Had Sunday lunch the week after Mother's Day with our Mum's. The beer was excellent, the staff were attentive & friendly and the food was amazing. Downside was that the pub was cold but this was sorted when we asked for the heating to be turned on. I used to go this pub years ago and it has changed for the better

The Arkle Manor, Betchworth

Went to the Arkle Manor for my leaving do for 8 people. The restaurant manager was extremely rude as we had not booked and told us that we had to eat in the bar instead. There were 3 bar staff behind the bar but only one was serving. The other two were stacking cups and filling up peanut jars. Finally a surly barman took my order and after that ignored all the others waiting for a drink and to order food. The end result was that we waited ages to get a drink and the food was served eractically

The Parrot Inn, Forest Green

Hey Fullbelly we have friends that love this pub and held their wedding there so had no option to go back BUT as much as we enjoyed their day, the same problems are still apparent. So please do not make me out to be a malicious person. I hate this pub because it can not get the balance right and the staff are unprofessional. I have been to 6 weddings there and each time the day is fraught with problems. I also know some of the locals and have experienced aggressive behaviour between them and against outsiders drinking in the pub . Come to the pubs around Rusper and see the difference

The Parrot Inn, Forest Green

I really hate this pub, overpriced food and drink. The service is totally crap. The only saving grace is that it's a lovely building

The Railway, Crawley

Just love the Railway.. Only have a few guest ales but the food is to die for.. Such a brilliant pub with friendly staff and regulars.

The Cherry Tree Inn, Faygate

Hey Skyhii I warned you, not a great pub. Love the Lamb

10 Nov 2010 19:32

The Lamb, Rusper

Can't fault this pub. Great ales and fantastic menu. The food is all sourced in Sussex or Surrey. I love the Royal Oak for the ale

Bar Med, Crawley

Love the live music but not a place to rate the beer LOL!!

The Parrot Inn, Forest Green

The Parrot could be goldmine but sadly not a good pub. The staff are rude & indifferent to people waiting at the bar. The Stowford Press was disgusting as was the guest ale which was cloudy and sour. The food was extremely disappointing considering the price. I agree with properpubover that the food was incredibly salty and I honestly do not know how they have achieved a Michelin star. I agree with the problems with the locals not allowing people get to the bar. We gave it another chance after such a bad evening with a local called Trace or Lace who started a fight in the bar. Just don't expect this behaviour from a pub that has a Michelin star. Personally I would never go back

The Royal Oak, Rusper

Went for a drink tonight even though quite a drive for us. Lovely kept beer and cider. A total gem of a pub and so deserve their CAMRA award. No chilled bottled beers, a true ale drinkers pub. Good luck Sara Keep up the good work

The Royal Oak, Rusper

Good on Sara for sticking up for her pub. We haven't been there since she took over but we will visit soon.

The Cherry Tree Inn, Faygate

Not impressed by this pub. Beer ok but nothing to write home about. Really annoyed with the menu as it states everything is homecooked which is a total lie. Most of the starters are bought in and our roast was served with catering roast potatoes along with frozen veg and yorkshire. Sorry but that's not homemade

The Crown, Capel

How I agree with Simonkey7. Yes the landlords are doing their best to make this a village pub but the 'regulars' are destroying a good thing. I'm not an incommer, my family have lived in the village for over 70 years. As I have said before the majority of the regulars are not locals and are extremely rude.

26 Jun 2008 21:15

The Stepping Stones, Westhumble

Enough said Trev, you are a walker and expect free facilites where ever you go, Do you live in the country?? Sharon is not rude, they are fed up with people using their car park when they don't buy a drink. There's a car park at the station if you want to go for a walk but hey you have to pay for that.

26 Jun 2008 21:09

The Plough, Coldharbour

I know local people that have told them about the bad reviews for the pub and were told to F@*k off. This pub is goldmine so why doesn't they install a water fountain outside so the cyclists and walkers can get their free drink. Sadly the cyclists and walkers are not spenders but they expect the free use of the facilities of a pub. I can understand why she gets angry but I think she should be able to identify the genuine customers. Before all the cyclists and walkers start a hissy fit, I ran a very sucessful country pub for years and can assure you that the majority were not valued customers.

26 Jun 2008 21:03

The Abinger Hatch, Abinger Common

Visited the Hatch during the Abinger Fayre. Was shocked that the bar was almost empty when in previous years you had to wait ages to get a drink. Toilets still don't flush and the bar is dirty. How the mighty have fallen

The Plough, Coldharbour

Whilst I agree with supporting freehouses, I feel that Wonderkind is missing the point. I have visited the Plough several times solely because of the micro brewery but each time we have encountered blantant rudeness from the landlady and extremely poor customer service from the staff. The landlady is pushing good business out of her door by her attitude so why should people support this freehouse. There are far more welcoming freehouses in the local area where our custom is appreciated. By the way I am not Freddie or any other banned customer

The Parrot Inn, Forest Green

Been to this pub many times and agree with the negative comments about the staff and regulars. The wine is extremely expensive and not that great. I have also been to functions which have not always been great, beware if you are seated in the conservatory during winter as it's freezing in there. Food is overpriced. There are far better pubs offering good reasonably priced food, a warm welcome and friendly service in Surrey.

13 Mar 2008 16:05

The Royal Oak, Holmbury St Mary

I agree it's lovely pub but it's so short on seating and there is always a queue for the Ladies on busy nights. Can take a while to get served sometimes. Nice to sit outside on a summer's evening.

13 Mar 2008 15:46

The Kings Head, Holmbury St Mary

Go to this pub once a month after shooting clays and always have a great time. Really friendly atmosphere. A real country pub selling local beers served by great staff. Highly recommended

13 Mar 2008 15:31

The White Hart, Crawley

Beer okay, food okay, bar staff okay but really rude bully boy Irish manager who treats his staff appallingly. Went in just after Xmas and witnessed a member of staff walk out after he continually picked on her for no reason. He creates a really nasty atmosphere so we won't be going back.

12 Mar 2008 13:22

The Plough Inn, Ifield

Local pub for us and what a gem. Friendly staff, well kept cellar and great food. Worth a visit

12 Mar 2008 12:52

The Royal Oak, Ifield

This is one of my local pubs and I have to say that it is probably one of the worst in West Sussex. The staff are horrible and the place always seems to look untidy. Was really shocked to see the manager prepare a Birthday party buffet with smart price Asda food!!!

12 Mar 2008 12:43

The Lamb, Rusper

Started using the Lamb last year and have always had great food & service. Everybody I have recommended it too feels the same way too. Good range of beers which are well kept. The customer service is brilliant and nothing is too much trouble. I am disappointed to read the comments about the opening times. This is an out of the way country pub with little passing trade. The Plough in Rusper however has a lot of passing trade so it would make sense for them to open all day.

12 Mar 2008 12:39

The Abinger Hatch, Abinger Common

Can't believe how expensive this pub is now for both food and drink. Used to love the Hatch but it's too expensive.

12 Mar 2008 12:23

The Stepping Stones, Westhumble

Went for a meal last Friday and still can not fault this pub, the food was really good. Roger and Sharon are wonderful hosts, the beer is well kept and there is a good choice. Can't understand why there is such a problem with the pub be closed at 4.00pm as this is quite normal with country pubs especially when there is limited passing trade.

12 Mar 2008 11:13

The Crown, Capel

Went once again to the Crown on Bank Holiday Monday as it was our friends choice. Sorry try to objective but it is still the worst pub I have been to. My friends told me that they do not upset the bar hogging horrible regulars as they have been intimidated by them in the past. It took 43 minutes to get served and by that time we were so angry we left. How can a publican allow such a horrible bunch to intimidate the rest of the pub.

The Lynd Cross, Horsham

Fourth visit to this pub and really can not fault it. Cheap well kept ale and really goo d food at a very good price. Used to get a bit annoyed at the amount of pensioners hogging tables at lunchtimes but today got really peeved with the amount of students sitting at tables with one drink between six. After a word with the manager, the majority were asked to leave. As such, I can not fault the management who reacted in a very professional way to free up tables for Other than this, it's great pub with polite stff and excellent service. Love the curry nights - absolute bargain. Well recommended

The Stepping Stones, Westhumble

Took advice from friends that this pub is a little gem. Absolutely fabulous Sunday lunch and cheap as well. Can't fault the bar and waiting staff as they are so friendly as well as being so good at what they do. Well kept real ales but sadly lacking on good cider. Only downside of the day was a very rude female cyclist who wanted a portion of mayo for her picnic in the pub garden yet she didn't even buy a drink. The manager told me that they have major problems with walkers & cyclists using the facilities especially the car park and yet do not spend a penny in the pub. Shame on the walkers and cyclists as you are ruining a fantastic pub by your obnoxious attitude and disregard for the pub. I sincerely recommend this pub so visit it soon, you will not be disappointed.

The Hen and Chicken, Southwater

Have been to this pub twice this week as it's such lovely place to go. The owners & staff are so friendly and welcoming. The toilets, bar and restaurant are spotless and well furnished. The food is the best I have had in West Sussex and the portions are huge. Maureen's homemade grub is to die for. A little oasis with great ales such as Horsham & Spitfire but the best is the wonderful cider. This pub is well recommended so worth making a special journey, you will not be disappointed.

The Gipsy Moth, Croydon

Lovelylady, we met some friends there last week and couldn't agree more. The manager and staff have changed. Customer service is not apparent, we were ignored so many times waiting for a drink that it ended in an argument with the agrogant barman who told me that he wasn't serving the part of the bar I was standing at. Our food was served on a cold plate and the potatoes were rock hard and probably off. The four steaks varied in size and were not cooked as we had asked. Loads of unsupervised and screaming kids were running about. One kid even took chips off my friends plate. Total chav city, avoid this pub with a wide berth

27 Jun 2006 20:23

The Royal Oak, Rusper

We love this pub, it's like something out of a timewarp. It's an old fashioned quaint pub that hasn't been refurbished for years but that just adds to the charm. Great Badger ales, friendly atmosphere and attentive staff. Has a sort of Fawlty Towers feel about but so well worth a visit. Recommended

26 Jun 2006 18:36

The Crown, Capel

Met friends at this pub this evening after hearing old manager had left. The bar was almost deserted yet the service was crap. Still not a nice pub to drink in. In fact comes second to the Plough at Coldharbour for rude staff and a really bad atmosphere which is saying something as The Plough is probably the worst pub in Surrey. Don't bother wasting money until you are sure new management has settled in. Horrible pub

23 Jun 2006 19:40

B52's Bar, Horsham

Had a leaving do in this pub last friday. OK bar, nothing great to say about it especially as they had limited stock of draught and bottled beers. Staff indifferent who ignore customers. Sick of being abruptly told to move by waiting staff bringing food through to tables outside. Very dangerous overhanging shelf above the settee in the bar ara. Wouldn't go back unless I have to. Not the best place in Horsham to go

23 Jun 2006 19:33

The Abinger Hatch, Abinger Common

Had a drink in this pub by accident. We had read the reviews and wasn't sure but how right the majority are. We were served by a lovely girl called Verity who served everybody in turn. We loved the atmosphere so much that we decided to eat there as well. The food was well presented and excellently cooked. We met the female chef who was delighted we enjoyed our meal. We finished with the largest cheeseboard we have ever had with a great choice of cheeses. Wish this pub was in our village as it's one of the best we have been to. Would recommend this pub to everyone.
