The Ypres Castle Inn, Rye

Was once one of Rye's best. Very odd new staff. Steep steps preclude all but the fittest from getting to it (from either direction). Pleasant setting.

The George Inn, Rye

The considerable character that The George once had has been swept away by over-zealous new owners. What a terrible shame! You only have to look at the new signs outside to know - all lower-case and not a capital letter to be seen; "the george in rye". The bar has been extended, and would grace any bland hotel-chain clone. Oh, and they've painted the outside in a suitable shade of grey.

The Bell Inn, Iden

A very good village pub, with excellent food. The previous landlord kept half the large garden when he sold the pub in 2007, and has built a house for himself.

Black Horse, Nuthurst

A really good, small, very old village pub, in a very pleasant setting. I've been using it since 1974, and the atmosphere is still as good.

The Horse and Groom, St Leonards on Sea

Definately the best pub in St Leonards (though that isn't saying much), and almost the best in the Borough of Hastings and St Leonards (which is). Harvey's bitter is un-failingly good. The landlord and staff are friendly enough, and it's a real "local" with negligible passing trade. The restaurant next door (St Clements), owned by the pub, is very good indeed and there's an interconnecting door between them.

The Standard Inn, Rye

A good un-spoiled pub which has improved greatly since a management buy-out in 2007. Harvey's bitter usually available, and a couple of other guest beers. Very much a younger person's haunt in the evening, lunchtimes are quieter. Food is good, but the service can be a bit slow. Anyone wanting fast food, naff chrome furniture or London-style faux Victoriana should avoid it. Those of us that like a proper, slightly eccentric, friendly (very)old pub will find it refreshing (no pun intended). The landlord (Jonathan) is a real one-off, very theatrical, charming (and a friend of Dorothy's!).
