This is a real pub. Amazing.

The Harveys and the Dark Star were well kept, the food was good and the service friendly.

Part of it is given over to dining but you can also dine in the bar where there are real people who just come in for a drink and a chat, just like pubs should be.

How refreshing to be among people chatting about football (a subject I have no interest in) rather than children running around and being a nuisance.

They do let children and dogs in and it can get quite busy.

After taking a rest over Christmas and the New Year, the weekly quiz is moving to Wednesday. The first quiz of 2012 will be on Wednesday 18 January.

Thursday night is quiz night! £2 per person, with 50% going to St Catherine's Hospice. First prize is a gallon of beer (donated by the pub), second prize is £10, and there is a Rollover Jackpot awarded every four weeks to the team that accumulates most points in that period.

If you think you know what connects Edinburgh, Dover and Edinburgh, if you can remember which team was undefeated in the 2010 FIFA World Cup, if you know when you're in the Rhubarb Triangle, then you should join us on Thursday! And if you visit the quiz as a result of reading this, let me know (I'm the quizmaster) and I'll buy you a pint!

The Black Horse now has a 3rd real ale on (Harveys Sussex, Fullers London Pride & Dark Stars Hophead) along with a proper flat Westons scrumpy cider. Beautiful pub, had a great lunch and one too many of the Hophead's whilst sat enjoying the sun before staggering off on a long country walk home.

An honest country pub - no horse brasses or farm implements hanging from the ceiling. Beer good but not a huge choice. Food superb. Yes there is a bit of a wait but thats because everything is cooked to order. Yes it is a pricier than most others but then you do get what you pay for. If I do have one gripe its that the refurbishment didn't reach the toilets. I appreciate that its an old building but they could be so much nicer.
