The Bag O' Nails, Bristol

Gone are the days of Cherubim, and Seraphim, in what was once nicknamed the chapel of Rest.
These days its more like a Greek Palace, with a Red headed Goddess behind the Bar, and the Beer tasting like gold. 9/10

The Three Tuns, Hotwells

Great Ale ,as said before. However with the amount of keg craft beer on sale, and the coming of Brewdog in Bristol, does this not cast the mighty shadows of Apocalypse and Armageddon on Cask Beer, can this irrepressible force be stopped before Cask Beer just becomes a festering yellow spew.

The Post Office Tavern, Bristol

Lovely pub , nice landlady, boring choice of Beer

The Bridge Inn, Bristol

Yes a great little pub, usually has four Ales on usaly one from Bath Ales, perhaps not for the Dark Beer connoiseur as much as those prefer their Beer Golden.
One word of warning look out for a bloke that laughs loudly, screams when he talks, and looks like Dr Who.

Christophers, Bristol

I think if this is the same pub, that used to be the Prince Ruperts then its closed

The Eldon House, Bristol

Usually about 4 beers on with strong Bath ales choice in relation to choice, although the choice usually has at least one suprise.Overall not bad

The Cat and Wheel, Bristol

Choice pretty much the same as when Blackthorn was here, although they seem to alternate one of their Beers . Prices pretty cheap. Bar and Lounge.Sky telly.

Colston Arms, Bristol

Popped in here on a sunday a couple of weeks ago, as said before, good pint of rev james, excellent sunday lunch at a very reasonable 6.50.

The Hillgrove Porter Stores, Bristol

A great Bristol pub, and well worth the steep climb for the decent pint of ale you'll get up here.
Always a great choice of beers, and a real cider and real perry is usually on as well.
Price ,well as the fat Train conductor, sorry fat Beer Badger says , like the climb a bit steep , but they do a card for discounts off their own products.
Food is served here, obviously you'd have to check the times.
If your a visitor to Bristol, and want a great view across the city you won't do a lot better than this pub.

The Golden Guinea, Bristol

Never Been to this pub before.
Only 2 of the three beers were on, one was something pretty standard the other was wickwar cotswold ,the name escapes me ,as has been said before a tad expensive at 3.10 , that said the quality was very good.
The pub also sells a local cider which I shall try on my next visit.
Food also i have to say was pretty good.

The Cotham Porter Stores, Cotham

I use this pub on a sort of 3-4 times a month basis and have been for the last three or four years, mainly because i'm more of an Ale drinker than a Cider drinker.
The pub has changed quite a bit over the past year the manager has changed, and all of the former Bar staff seem to have gone ,and in there place seems to be a list of listless teenage girls who really don't know much about the product they're selling , although thankfully Teresa sometimes appears.
A few of the customers have gone ,sadly including one of the outstanding charachters of the pub Wilf . Despite the sad loss of Wilf and others , there still remains some great charachters, and the people here are really nice, I love the social mix you get, students locals etc etc. which you don't find often in Bristol.
I don't agree with Blackthorn that the charachter of the pub has been lost by refurshment , the red and White Decor was a disaster agreeably, but before this half the seats had been chewed up and the place looked like it was going to fall down , so something needed doing.
The name Cotham Porter stores, perhaps a rare silly point from probably the most thorough regular reviewer in Bristol on bite , remember porter also would apply to the hillgrove, which admittedly does sell some porter, but quite a large variety of other drinks as well.
But Blackthorn if you can find me a pub that only sells Porter, please tell me i'll be there.
Also if the likes of Blackthorn, the Beatles 38 and others want real ale, there are loads of great ale houses round here , the green man ,the hillgrove, the robin hood the highbury, whilst another real ale pub in the area would be great does it have to be this pub.
On my last visit, a choice as usual of about four or five ciders, nothing unusual your cheddar trad heritage etc etc , although Broadoak perry was on as well . The guest I think is weston's organic and has been for some time , I like this drink ,and there's nothing wrong with it but if your going to have a guest why not change it round now again landlord.

The Cornubia, Bristol

A nice little tucked away pub with outside seating outside.
An interesting as said before selection of beers, again 3 or four beers sampled.
Probably not as many dark beers as I would have liked in the choice available to be honest , though ok you pander to your regular customers not to someone who comes in now again, and again this is only personal preference not a critiscism.
My main critiscism is like Dandilus most of the Beer was flat.

11 Jun 2011 13:38

The Royal Oak, Clifton

As has been said a very boring unimaginative choice of real ales.
One real cider Black rat.
Staff efficient.
Ok but certainly would not be my first port of call in this area.

6 May 2011 08:57

The Berkeley, Clifton

Situated at the top of park st .
This spoons neither has the quality or choice of say the Berkeley or the knights Templar, quality may be asomething to do with the turnover they were selling their ale at 1.50 the other week.
Always seem to have a problem with the temperature in regard to real ales.
cider is not the greatest choice either, and food was a bit mank

The Victoria, Clifton

Suprisingly not reveiwed for about a year, possibly because what other accolade can you add
As said this is an extremely good pub
It was having a festival last week, quality was spot on.
As said before small but lovely pub.
Essential pub to visit if you visit Bristol.

The Bag O' Nails, Bristol

The latest news i've heard , Luke Daniels was in the 3t up the rd the other day, and advised some of the locals that he was hoping this pub would be opening in May 2011.

22 Apr 2011 15:47

The Hope and Anchor, Bristol

In someways its a pity that this is well known as a food pub , as this pub sells great beer.
There is always always a large and varied choice of Ales.
Ale quality exceptional? yes I think so.
By the way the food was pretty good as well.

22 Apr 2011 15:43

The Three Tuns, Hotwells

One of Bristol's great pubs.
A real serious rival to the seven stars .
Most of the Beers are changing, Arbors Brigstow seem to be regular though.
Quality exceptional.
Bar staff seemed to be very knowledgable of the product they were selling.

22 Apr 2011 15:36

The Quinton House, Clifton

A really nice little tucked away pub.
food was good.
Ale choice was a little uninspiring, and I have to say on this visit my wickwar bob was a bit below par.

22 Apr 2011 15:28

The Highbury Vaults, Bristol

A pub at the top of st michaels hill , if you don't fancy the walk a number nine bus will get you there.
A youngs pub with a few guests a large range, if again somewhat limited.
I had teignworthy reel ale.
I wouldn't say i was a regular in this pub , but the Kingsdown/cotham area in Bristol is as good as anywhere for real ale and this pub is a must if you decide to visit the area .
The quality of ale is always good in this pub.

16 Apr 2011 08:45

Red Lion, Clifton

Closed when I visited last week , and looks to have abandoned .does anyone have news on this pub.

16 Apr 2011 08:33

The Orchard Inn, Bristol

The best cider pub in Bristol by a long way with a very large choice.
All of the ciders i tried were very good , that included Parsons choice.
I Think cider , especially dry is an acquired taste so , whilst there is nothing wrong with it.It may not suit everyone's palette.
Beer range is better than a lot of pubs , and although I did not try it on this visit ,quality has always been good in the past.
Food is the sort of food , choice, and quality that a pub should sell.

16 Apr 2011 08:29

Horts, Bristol

A youngs pub , but with a few guest beers that included one from Teignworthy and one from Yeovil ,stargazer.
The latter was readily supped , and I also had a youngs special.
Quality was good in fairness.
A large if somewhat limited range.
Prices not exorbitant , but you can get cheaper beer in town.
Large pub with pool table.
Has a bit of a city centre feel to it.
There are better pubs than this in town , but you could do a lot worse.

16 Apr 2011 08:09

The Bank, Bristol

A pub with up to four real changing real ales on.
Quality of the beer was pretty good last visit.
A pub where there always seems to be something going on.
Something here also for you Apple lovers.
The food is very good.

16 Apr 2011 07:21

The Bristol Fringe Cafe Bar, Bristol

This pub unfortunately has an established image of opening, and closing again reasonably rapidly.
There were two beers on , when I visited , otter, and Tribute , the quality of the latter drinkable , but only just.
As said before plenty of handpumps not being used.
Based on this visit has the overall feeling of a pub that is going to close again. PLEASE prove me wrong.

16 Apr 2011 07:01

The Shakespeare, Redland

This isn't the easiest pub tofind , but worth a look as said before.
More of you may have been to the Clyde. The interior is very similiar to the clyde , but is a lot smarter.
The pub is divided into halves one side mainly for eating, but you have to go into both bars to see the full rage of Ales.
They had four Ales on two from ringwood one from wychwood, and Banks Bitter.
Had the stong one one from ringwood, and the chocolate flavoured one from Wychwood, quality was good in both cases.

16 Apr 2011 06:47

The Commercial Rooms, Bristol

I was in here last , and there was a quite a lot of the crowd you'd expect to see in BSB , which I had walked past ,and was absolutely empty.
Good range of beers had deep shaft ,from a forest of Dean brewery.
Quality was excellent.
Interior not bad but lavortaries could do with a bit of tlc.

16 Apr 2011 06:33

The Seven Stars, Bristol

No nonsense real ale drinkers pub , with an ever changing range of beers.
Had a festival on when i was there, think the theme was shropshire.
Bar staff who seemed to have a good knowledge of what they were talking about , especially the one who looked like a viking .
Will visit again especially as they seem to have a number of dark beers.

The Jersey Lilly, Bristol

Is beginning to look a bit run down ,
A shadow of what it was a couple of years ago , a choice of 3 beers , the quality of my adnams was below par , the place was very unatmospheric ,and frankly I couldn't muster enough courage to have another one.
