The Birkbeck Tavern, Leyton

I decided to visit this excellent pub following some reports in the internet, prior to which I never knew existed, as it is an out-of-the-way location.

I understand that it has been bought by another pub company who plan to retain it as a community pub, so it's once uncertain future has now been secured.

My visit to the Birkbeck Tavern was an excellent and enjoyable one, the pub has lots to offer despite it's location behind Leyton tube station, and across from St Patrick's cemetery.

The two bars are in need of a little makeover as the décor and furnishings are a little dated-but clean.

There is also a little area between the two bars which houses the pool table and also one of the sets of the pub toilets.

the other sets of toilets are at the end of the main bar either side of a feature fireplace and staircase to the function hall upstairs.

There is also a digital Jukebox on the wall behind the staircase facing the bar.

The bar staff and regulars are all a friendly bunch, and there is never any trouble.

One of the pub's best facilities is it's well kept beer garden, there seems to be regular live music and a lot of charitable events.

I enjoyed my visit so much ,that I promised the staff and regulars that I would do all that I could,to promote the pub, that's why I am writing this comment.

The Birkbeck Tavern is one of Leyton's best kept secrets, but to get there turn left out of Leyton tube station, walk a little down the street, you will come to a set of steps on your left, go down these, at the bottom turn left, and follow the road around, after a couple of hundred yards, you will come to the junction of Langthorne road on your right(The Birkbeck Tavern will be visible on the left hand side about 100 yards up, walk up Langthorne road, after 100 yards you will have arrived at the Birkbeck Tavern.

Larkshall, Chingford

I returned to the Larkshall after being away for five years,I had tried to visir during that time bur I could'nt fint it,as it is set back a fair distance from the road and is separated by a tall hedge.

The pub has much to offer it has two bars the front main bar, where there are several Tvs showing sky sports and a back bar which also has an upstairs mezzaniene area, accessed via a steep spiral staircase.

There is a standard Digital Jukebox, and several quiz machines and an ATM Machine.

There are at least 3 woodburning stoves which give out a lot of heat, and some of the best outside pub areas in Chingford, complete with Adventure playground for children.

A nice pub to visit especially in the summer.

3.Excellent Beer Garden at the back

The Old Maypole, Ilford

I had the recent pleasure of re-visiting the old maypole recently, and the pub,it's staff and it's facilities continue to impress me. i.

A couple of years ago the pub underwent a complete refurbishment into a Sizzling Pub and resteraunt, the pub is now divided into two zones, the main area is the sizzling restaraunt, where you can order some really succulant dishes such as their excellent steaks, cooked very nicely and very tasty indeed.

This part of the pub allows families to eat with their children there's pleanty of seating and is a very extensive area there is also a fully enclosed Beer Garden out the back,as well as an outside drinking space at the side.

The other part was the former Pool Room, and this is the general pub area-you can also eat food purchased from the sizzling menu here as well-this area has more seating, plasma TVs for all the sport etc,Two Pool Tables,a Darts area and a newly installed"Top of the Pops"Digital Touchscreen Jukebox-select any top 40 hit going back to 1952 and more.

I once was a regular at this pub when i used to work in the area-since my redundancy, and over the years i have seen many changes it was once a Mr Qs,an Arena pub and is now a Sizzling pub and restaraunt in the mid 90s there seems to be one thing that remains the same, that is the old Maypole continues to be run by Ray Claydon and his family,he has been here throughout all those years though I still pop back to the old maypole now and then just to see how everything is with the pub.

Another thing i forgot to mention is that they have a monday club(Including Bank Holidays)-Where you enjoy drinks such as Carling and Carlsbery at only 1.79 a pint.!!.

The Jobbers Rest, Cranham

I recently visited this pub,Nice, clean and well kept,However the pool table and jukebox have long gone, together with the neglected decor, this pub is now totally unrecogniseable of it's former self, there are newspapers for customers to read, nice food is served and there is a nice Beer Garden out the back together with a nice conservatory area-there is also live music at weekends.

The Bell, Leytonstone

Following recent visit to he Bell,I found the pub staffed by two friendly barmaids, who made me feel very welcome,Lots of Plasma TVs around showing the football etc-Two Pool Tables and a"top of the pops"Digital Jukebox where you can play ay top 40 hit going right ack to 1952.

All in all a nice pub to consider visiting whenever you're in the area.

The Heathcote, Leytonstone

Been to this pub about 10 times since first discovering it,Nice friendly clientiele and staff.

It is a large pub-a fair walk or W15 Bus ride from Leytonstone tube station(Central Line)-Comprising a Large Restaraunt area to the front,On the left hand side is the Lounge area which leads to a games area wth two Pool Tables and two dartboards, plus a table football game, this area is also served by a recently installed, excellent Touchscreen Digital Jukebox, where one can play any top 40 song going back to 1952 !.-Beware however if there is football being shown you wil be unable to hear your songs as the football takes priority over music, indeed there is a notice displayed on the jukebox which explains everything-out the very back there is a nice Beer Garden.

Upstairs there is a nice Live Music venue/Function Room.

The, Gants Hill

I have been here Several times, the time before last I met Darren, the Venue's Owner together with his large Rodesian Ridgeback Dog which,I at first, felt very intimidating as I thaught he would go for me as soon as I stepped inside the venue,However Darren reassured me that he was very friendly so I was no longer afraid-and even managed to stroke him !.

That said, this place has a lot going for it,dispite the it's small size ,the fellow customers and staff are all a friendly bunch, and there is always a selction of Real Ales(Which seems to be steadly increasing),also for lager drinkers there is a large selection of Draught Lagers served from Ice cold fonts.

At the front of the premises is an outside Drinking Area, but until recently you could only smoke out there, but some local issues have now been resolved with the council to allow customers to drink outside in what is the Venue's only outside space.

There are Live Bands at the weekend as they manage to squeeze into a small area that is set aside for them.

There is also room for a Pool Table and a"Top of the Pops"Touchscreen Digital Jukebox-Where you can play any top 40 song going right back to 1952,and much more !.

Thee is also Several Plasma/LCD TVs dotted around the venue on which to enjoy the football or some other favourite sport.

One of the Venue's Downsides is that they do not currently do food,(I have already mentioned several times that this is not a big place-maybe not big enough to have an Operational Kitchen),however from time to time the bar staff go around with plates of Sandwiches,so this is at least something.

It is also worth mentioning that they are doing a loyalty card scheme-recieve an Orange Loyalty card and have it stamped every time you buy a drink(Between Sunday and Thursday up to 31st August)When you have 8 stamps you will recieve a free pint !!!.

And finally one of the smallest Gents Toilets a venue could possibly have.

All-in-all a very nice place to g, very nice Owner, people who work and drink there, and it's not to far away from where I live so its handy for me too !!!.

The Robin Hood and Little John, Brentwood

I had visited this pub Last year, and have continued to enjoy it,it had been my 4th visit as I do not live in the area,All of my visits have been enjoyable ones and this pub has become one of my favourites,This seems to be a pub to enjoy in the summer months when the weather is warmer and the evenings are lighter
due to it's excellent outside facilities.

Inside doesen'nt dissapoint either,it is staffed by some lovely friendly Bar Staff, the fellow customers I've met there seem to be very friendly too-other inside facilities include Open fire,a Pool Table in it's own area,a seperate Darts area up the opposite end of the Pub,I had previously mentioned about the Digital Jukebox on one of my previous comments-However on last year's visit found one of" Sound Leisure's" flagship Digital Jukeboxes installed, this new jukebox allows one to select any top 40 song going back to 1952,"plus much more"-as quoted on the screen !!!.

It looks like I'm planning a return visit to this, one of my all time favourite pubs soon, maybe there will me more suprises in store for me when I get there !.

The Lion, Potters Bar

Small little"local" on the edge of potters Bar,Two small bars-Lounge Bar with open fire,Background Music and TV,Public Bar used to have a pool table but this has now been taken out,Plasma/Led TV showing the football etc there is also a Digital Jukebox on the wall, but not switched on at the time of my visit.

Small Heated Beer Garden, and nice toasties available at 2.00 each.

The Cask and Stillage, Potters Bar

The Ship, Chelmsford

I visited last Tuesday,Great Jukebox-play any top 40 track going right back to 1952.

The Wheatsheaf, Chelmsford

Following my return to chelmsford,I came to check out all that's happening with all of my Favourite Pubs,The Wheatsheaf is certainly no exception,I returned fo find a very nice barman, very friendly and attentive, and answering all my questions about the pub cheerfully.

When I was Last here the Wheatsheaf was a Qs pub,but is now been de-branded,yet all the friendly atmosphere and magic remains of it's former self.

The pub's Video Jukebox, has been upgraded and can now play any Top 40 Audio track going back to 1952-as well as any top 10 Video going back to 1980-it is also worth noting that all credits are free Mon-Fri 4-7pm.

The only downside I can find is the price of a pint here is now 3.10-for Fosters or Carlsberg,But i have found that is the going price for all the Pubs in Chelmsford as a whole.

It has,nt put me off visiting again,I'll be back soon !.

The Fleece, Chelmsford

After some years away from Chelmsford,I visited the Fleece recently and has now been renamed The Golden Fleece,As it was when I used to visit it back in he early 90s,it was then my most favourite pub in Chelmsford with a very friendly Atmosphere, for a time it had been simply called "the Fleece"but it's name has recently reverted back to it's full title.

Today the Golden Fleece has live bands 3 days a week, starting as early as 2pm in the afternoon-when I visited it was on a Tuesday,so no live bands for that day, they open for Breakfast every morning from 9am.

Another thing I noted that there was a disabled customer in a Wheelchair visiting when I was there and the Staff brought his Drinks to his table for him, this indeed goes a long way with me-superb helpful friendly staff !.

The Bay Horse, Chelmsford

Currently undergoing a major refurbishment, soon to reopen as a Gastro pub/resturaunt.

The Mill Hill, Acton

Very Friendly and welcoming Pub,just 200 yards up from Acton town tube Station,

I was made to feel wery welcome by two friendly Barmaids who were also very attentive.

This pub has a lot of facilities inside it but looks very deceptive from the street,it is shaped like a triangle, and the front bar,you enter in first is the smallest, this has a central bar and several plasma/LCD TVs showing the football etc,

Moving down the central corridor,Which houses the Pub's toilets and private areas, such as the Offices, there is a huge back Bar,complete with upstairs Mezzeniene area containing 3 Pool Tables and 3 Dartboards,on the ground floor these is an extensive Dining Area and a large Bar -which I was informed is never used as the Mill Hill does'nt seem to get busy enough to justify opening the Back Bar-All drinks and food have to be bought/ordered from the front Central bar !.

Also in the Back Bar there are more Plasma/LCD TVs showing the football etc,and there is also a Latest Touchscreen Digital Jukebox where you can play any top 40 hit going right back as far as 1952(2 Consoles, one in each Bar).

In the very back there is also an attractive Beer garden complete with outdoor TV.

This was my first visit to the Mill Hill, and for a such a nice friendly pub with so much going for it ,I have felt it was under patronised,Let's try and bring peope back to the Mill Hill-(Turn right out of Acton Town tube station, the Mill Hill is 200 yards up on ste same side of the road-Also the E3 Bus route passes the Door !).

That said maybe more people Will now frequent the Mill Hill,I'll certainly be Back.

The Prince of Wales, Ilford

This is the Second time I Have had to write a message about this fabulous Pub,it is without doubt, one of the best in London.

As Ever,Very friendy and Attentive Barmaids See to a customer's evey need,Such as turnng up the Jukebox when one puts money in and Chooses from a selection of over 30,000 songs-in fact this Digital Touchscreen Jukebox allows you to choose any top 40 song going back to 1952.

You can always guarantee to find a warm welcome from staff and regulars alike. A friendly atmosphere awaits anyone who goes there. The recent improvements to this pub are great and the beer garden is out of this world! Get down there and see for yourself!!
