The Red Lion, Wheelton

Don't know why I bother. Enjoying the first decent weather for about seven years, I decided to have a leisurely stroll along the canal to Wheelton. Having enjoyed a couple of pints at the local canal-side pub, I then walked into Wheelton village to have a pint or two in the Red Lion before catching the bus back in to Chorley. NOT A CHANCE! Pub shut with a "closed until further notice" note in the window. Did an about-turn and went back to the canal as at my age I can't get a mortgage to go into the other nearby pub.

The Dressers Arms, Wheelton

At 3.35 for a pint of Taylor's Landlord, I will be giving it a miss on my next visit to the Wheelton area.

Never seen it open.

Lord Nelson, Croston

A real drinkers' pub. Believe they pub bands on at the weekend, but where they put them in a rather small pub I don't know.

Good (but pricey) beer. Nice outside area.

The Wheatsheaf Hotel, Croston

Seems to be closed more than it's open these days.

The Black Horse, Croston

Excellent village pub with bowling green and boules pitch out at the back. Worth a visit.

Nothing to write home about.

The Ramblers Bar, Penrith

As with the previous poster, walked from the camp site in Patterdale to find it closed for a private function on the 17th July! Therefore, zero from me too.

The Patterdale Hotel, Patterdale

Good beer. As for the atmosphere, it is ideal for anyone of a certain age who is nostalgic about the past, as the whole place has a 1970s feel about it.

Sams Bar, Chorley

Cheap, cheerful, but only sells keg.

The Queens Arms, Chorley

A boarded up eyesore in one of the most strategic parts of Chorley town centre.

The Malt 'n' Hops, Chorley

Used to be good when a Free House. Went downhill when Beartown bought it, mainly due to unsuitable licencees.

Has been closed recently, but due to reopen soon. Let's hope they get it right this time.

Nice to sit by the canal on a warm day and enjoy a very good pint of Coniston Bluebird, or one of the other seven real ales on offer. Avoid the "beer garden" out the back - it's like a brewer's delivery depot with a couple of picnic benches squeezed in amongst the empties.

Good (but overpriced) beer. Frequented by lawyers who, before the yuppy era, would probably have been gamekeepers.

Has reopened, but haven't been in there yet.

Well, that's that then.

Brother and sister-in-law went last Tuesday night. Not only was curry night not on, but the place was in darkness with a "For Lease" sign at the front.

Sun Inn, Bassenthwaite

Went in here three times last week while camping nearby. Only went in from 9:30 onwards, so all the diners had gone. Without the diners, I thought it had a good village pub feel about it. Beer was good and staff friendly - the landlord was even seen out at the front filling water bowls for customers' dogs!

Dog and Gun, Keswick

Called in here last Monday night while camping nearby. Never again. Beer was excellent. However, wondered why at about 10:50 the pub emptied. Soon found out when, after being served last orders at 10:55, at 11:05 the landlady started complaining loudly to the bar staff that she was ready for her bed. Sorry, luv, but if you want to be in bed by five past eleven you shouldn't serve customers at five to!

A great pub - when it works properly!

Turned up one night over the last festive season and they had run out of real ale. Only a couple of days' ago, I caught the bus for the three mile journey from Chorley to enjoy (or so I thought) the curry night - curry and a pint for a fiver - only to be greeted by a notice on the door that the kitchen was shut due to sickness.

On the other hand, when everything is working properly, the food is superb and good value and the beer is second to none. If you decide to visit, make sure you telephone ahead to make sure there aren't any problems.

Without my own negative experiences, I wouldn't hesitate to give this pub full marks. However, because of the disappointments I have had I can only mark it down.
