The Bridge Inn, Amberley

Almost 2 years since our last visit here and pleased to say the standard of food and drinks are as good as ever. and the staff friendly and helpful as before.

The George and Dragon, Houghton

Third visit to this pub. The pub is cosy, clean and welcoming and the selection of beers is good. The food is in the average price bracket for pubs and has a good selection of fish, meat and veggie options. The food was well presented, good size portions and speedily served. If I had to be picky it was being somewhat rushed to make a choice from the menu and being asked twice during the meal if everything was OK. I prefer to be left while eating and complain if I feel I need to. These points aside I shall return again, can't wait for the cold weather as this pub will be really cosy during the winter.

The White Hart, Pulborough

Visited on a Friday evening with great expectations but were soon let down. We managed to get served with drinks at the bar and were pointed toward a table. No offer to show us which table though. Service was abysmal and the male who eventually came and took our order was more interested in yakking to people he knew. The food was reasonable but a bit pricey. I had to hunt down a waitress in another part of the building to order sweet course.
The only thing worth going to this pub for is the view from the old bridge.

The Lord Nelson, Norton Sub Hamdon

This is a warm friendly pub in an unspoilt Somerset village. The staff gave a warm greeting and offered a good choice of ales from the bar. The Lord Nelson could be better described as restaurant/pub more than pub/restaurant. The food menu offered great choices with a specials board as a bonus. Food was A1 in taste, quality and quantity and priced very reasonably... so good we went back the next night as we were staying locally.
The only critisism was the noise from a group who arrived 'well plastered' on Thursday night and spoiled the atmosphere of the place.

The Slug and Lettuce, Chichester

Great place for midday lunch and menu is extensive and good value and portions very good. Staff very polite, efficient and attentive. Can get very busy lunchtimes so large groups would be safer making booking. I believe in the evenings it becomes a "town centre style pub so probabaly noisy and busy.

The Barnham Bridge Inn, Barnham

The tattiest exterior of any pub I have ever seen. Someone with the foresight to create a decent restaurant here as well as the bar sales could build up a decent trade given time and the effort to attract the right sort of customer.

The Bridge Inn, Amberley

We were greeted by a warm friendly welcome on a wet lunchtime... Nice choice of ales although I went for a draught Guinness and my friends were on soft drinks this visit. There was a great food choice , and the seafood lasagne and chicken and leek pie from the specials board lived up to expectation. We had passed on the starters and went for the high calorie puds. Tis country pub is definately one to stop at... we will be back.

The Plough Inn, Kingham

What a great find in a small Cotswold village. Friendly, inviting pub catering more for meals than bar trade but this does not detract from the fact is a great place to drink and eat. They serve a great pint of Hooky ale and the food is to die for with amazing specials. The prices are slightly up on the normal pub/restaurant range but is great in quality, variety and value and by no means over the top. We were on holiday and trying various dining options but the Kingham Plough was so good we dined twice during our week in the area. Don't bypass this village or you will have missed some of the best food in the Cotswolds.

The Swan Hotel, Arundel

Booked a table for 6 for a Saturday night.. Bar and restaurant were very busy which was a good sign. Staff cheerful and helpful. The meal was faultless and well priced with all the main meals apart from specials being under a tenner. Good selection of real ales and a great pint of Guinness. None of our party had any negative comments and the pubs on the list for a return visit soon.

The George Inn, Eartham

Oh dear.. this used to be such a great find in the midst of the country. This pub used to be famed for its food but no more. It was virtually empty when we called in for lunch and a look at the menu told us why. The beers and wines are great but apart from a burger the food was way over the top pricewise for midday lunch.. The garden could be nice but had dog mess round the tables on the lawn. If they get a grip with the food side of the business they may survive the recession.

The Coach and Horses, Clapham

As pub has now re-opened with new licensee my visit was with trepidation. However, we had a warm welcome from bar staff and the new "credit crunch" menu was an absolute bargain. Fresh sliced ham, egg and amazingly crisp chips for myself and three tasty bangers, egg and chips for my companion. No plastic packets of sauce either but real pots of mustard. Rest of the menu looked great. Bar and restaurant get top marks; when the beer garden, childrens playground and flower beds get tidied up the pub will get 9+ from me. Staff said the outside was due to get done shortly.

The Black Horse Inn, Byworth

To find this "real" old fashioned country pub you will need sharp eyes and a good map. Set in a real country village the initial appearances are deceptive. Walk into the brick and woodbeam bar but don't trip on the ancient uneven wooden floor. Posh tablecloths and bright lights there are not, scrubbed antique tables are the order of the day. Good food, beers and wines and a warm welcome are waiting. The menu is varied, and a specials board is up for main courses and puds. Prices are at the upper end of pub meal range but worth every penny. Check out the web site for sample menus which are as good as thay sound. We went for lunch and rounded off the afternoon with a stroll round the village and footpaths.

The Murrell Arms, Barnham

The true British pub, and even better now it is non smoking.. Quaint, old fashioned, real fires, low beams, great Fullers cask beers/ales and try the bacon hock and crusty bread or a curry. Not a large menu but great value meals. Large pub garden for children to play in and covered seating under a grape vine beside pub. Worth a visit just to examine all he curios hanging on the walls and beams.

The Old Stables, Fontwell

This is a fairly new pub in the grounds of Fontwell racecourse (junction A27 and A29). Once inside you could be fooled into thinking it is years old with brickwork and beams, wooden tables and old style furnishing. Beers and ales are great, not overpriced and the food menu is good and varied. Very busy on race days and in summer months but a great find on a long journey. Large pub garden for sunny days but traffic noise from main road can get a bit much.

The Gribble Inn, Oving

The quality and variety of beers cannot be faulted and the pub interior is fantastic, rustic with log fire.. Unfortunately the food lets the pub down badly. My calves liver was undercooked, the mash looked, tasted and had consistency of packet mash and the veg selection was overcooked, limp and looked eeb worse. It was well overpriced for a basic lunch. The 2 curries for 10 board outside should have sounded a warning, always a sign of a pub desperate for customers.
Come on Gribble, sort out and the food and you could be on a gold mine...
