user reviews of the Old Stables, Fontwell

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

I agree, whole heartedly, with the previous contributor. A return visit, after a year or so, produced a very nice but pricey (3.30) pint of Orkney Red MacGregor, only spoiled by the accompanying food. Where on the first occasion the food had been fast food but acceptable, this time it was still fast but far from acceptable. How quickly standards go downhill and accelerate. We needed to eat early, around six oclock, hence the second visit Beer In The Evening OTHER PUBS NEARBY dont serve food before seven, My choice of Smoked Chicken, Bacon and Avocado Salad, with crisp cos lettuce, baby spinach, plum tomatoes, croutons and honey mustard dressing for 8.95 was most unwise and the poorest value for money I have ever experienced. There were four tiny pieces of chicken and avocado, no more than a rasher of bacon, a few oily croutons, a mushy tomato, all on a bed of baby spinach and coated in poor quality dressing. No lettuce at all. This was rectified when drawn to attention, which produced a bowl of lettuce off-cuts certainly not crisp cos lettuce. If my partners chips had not been reheated in the microwave, I would be astounded. It was disappointing to see so many customers arriving later, when they would have been so much better off at other local pubs, - they could do with the business and would not take advantage.

Only go if you are dying of starvation & the Little Chef & Burger King on the other side of the A27 are not your thing!
Staff are helpful but poorly trained & don't know one coffee from another.
Food is seriously below average, even for the prices.
Dull, dull & unexciting. A pub for people with zero imagination. West Sussex is full of beautiful, genuinely old pubs serving good straightforward pub faire. This is a poor imitation.

This is a fairly new pub in the grounds of Fontwell racecourse (junction A27 and A29). Once inside you could be fooled into thinking it is years old with brickwork and beams, wooden tables and old style furnishing. Beers and ales are great, not overpriced and the food menu is good and varied. Very busy on race days and in summer months but a great find on a long journey. Large pub garden for sunny days but traffic noise from main road can get a bit much.

We stayed for the weekend in the adjoining hotel / motel / lodge.

Despite being part of a chain ( Innkeeper's Lodge ) which has every potential to be as bland as Brewer's Fayre, etc. this is really rather good. Decent food, and good ale - plus very friendly staff.

Our 12 month old daughter loved it, and we went made to feel like outcasts because we had brought her into a pub.

Handy for Fontwell racecourse if that sort of thing floats your boat.
