The Jolly Boatman, Newhaven

Now changed hands, Francis and family have gone to Spain.
New Landlady very friendly, seems as if she was not told about the pubs usual activities, so jazz not regular at the moment.
Still the same sort of choice for beers, which is a good thing, I hope it stays that way.
The only downside was the removal of the lace curtains, giving the place the look of a goldfish bowl.

The Pond, Brighton

Reading the previous comment, I can only say that it has not been done up in the 3 years since robamy visited, it is a dreary place.
My wife popped in for the singing, and was charged £2 for half a shandy, and she was told that Mark, a long time bl**dy good barman, had been sacked by Pat, the boss/owner, for having time off with an upset stomach.
Only Hophead on, the other ale being undrinkable.

The Montreal Arms, Brighton

Bring back Ali, the place has not been the same since she was sacked for having a cold.

The Freebutt, Brighton

Now closed again, looks permanent this time.

The Gardeners Arms, Lewes

Good range of beers, and that is where the positive side ends.
Glared at by customers when you enter.
Two females behind the bar, the one that seems to know the business always away somewhere, and the other, "Oh, I suppose I'll have to serve you then" I'm sure I've seen her in a sit-com somewhere, maybe Julie Walters in that antique shop.
I wondered why people started leaving about 10 to 11, I soon found out.
At 11PM on the dot, the shouting started, they both became very rude and obnoxious, the pub was empty by 5 past 11, including us.
As a member of Camra, I've enjoyed going to this place in the past, but will not again until there is a change of management.

The Horse and Groom, Brighton

Since my last posting, this place has gone way downhill, the decoration is tatty, bar staff that don't seem to really care whether they serve you or not, but then the "guvner" is only ever seen playing with his laptop, the place is empty all week, only has a few in at the weekend when there is an overloud tuneless band playing.
And now the Harvey's best has gone up to 3.50, way over the top for a run-down, back street pub.

The Woodingdean, Brighton

Closed, now an auction house.

Neptune, Hove

Overcrowded little place, could not get a drink because of the bar huggers refusing to let anyone in, in spite of the barmaid desperately trying to serve me.
I'll not revisit there until they change their policy, and keep one bit of the bar vacant for service.

The Reservoir, Brighton

Only started using this place a short while ago, very pleased with the friendly staff, they all make you very welcome, and the beer, must be amongst the best kept I've tasted for a very long time, the pipes are cleaned, not just rinsed, between barrels, and not as most in the area will say "I wash the pipes once a week, whether they need it or not"
I'm told that the beers might go up by 20p per pint next month (February or March), this will still leave all ales below 3.

The London Unity, Brighton

Changed hands a while ago, James has gone, and the pub went with him, now has unfriendly staff, beer quality dropped, but prices gone up, last time I was in there, only one ale, and one lager, "guvner" always outside smoking whilst people waiting at the bar.
I will not be visiting again until someone new takes over.

The Gardeners Arms, Lewes

Best pub on the ale trail, in fact with real pubs like this, who needs an ale trail.

The Plough, Plumpton Green

Very friendly staff, pity about the quality of the beer, especially as the only had Harvey's best on.
Huge pub, completely empty, bit obvious as why.

The Horns Lodge, South Chailey

Beer off, unfriendly bar staff more interested in chatting than serving, no real cider unless you paid 5 to go into the garden where they were having a festival.
Pity really as they had some very good live music that I would like to have stayed and heard.

The Bull Inn, Mockbridge

Where does the previous poster drink?
Harveys and Pride at 3.15 is only slightly above average for this part of the world. admitadley I can get Harveys best at 2.60 in a Harveys pub, but that is not normal.
4.75 is right for pint and a half if the pint i 3.15.
Lovely people, very friendly, and I bought a pint at 2.90.
Visit the pub and form your own views.

The Jolly Boatman, Newhaven

Can't really improve on the last comment, a year later, still the best in Newhaven.

The Horse and Groom, Brighton

"Uninspiring range of beers"? Doom Bar, Summer Lightning, Timothy Taylor Landlord and finally Harveys, uninspiring?
Good crowd, bar billards, a pub to enjoy!

The Foundry, Brighton

Nice place, good beer, but why the change of name?

1 Sep 2010 01:18

The Druids Arms, Brighton

Good staff, nice prices and late nights.

1 Sep 2010 01:15

The Cinque Ports, Seaford

Too many customers for the one new seemingly untrained bar staff, nobody getting what they ordered

1 Sep 2010 01:11

The Basketmakers Arms, Brighton

Bit expensive, and whilst I was there, they changed three ale barrels, and did not even flush one of them.

1 Sep 2010 01:03

The Stag Inn, Brighton

Changed hands yet again, bloke fron Northern Tavern, pub no better though, only Master Brew, 3.7 OG 3, disappointing taste, seem to remember many more taps the last time I was here.
Don't think I'll bother to revisit until it changes hands again, probably not long, can't understand a brewing company not selling it's brews in it's own pub.

21 Jun 2010 15:26

The London Unity, Brighton

Recently changed hands, very friendly bar staff and "guvner", and the beer is clean again.
A TV free pub, lots of live music, oh, and did I mention the clean full pints?

21 Jun 2010 01:29

The Battle of Trafalgar, Brighton

Probably a one off, but during my visit on Wednesday 16th, after I was served, the barmaid started sneezing into her hands and sleeves, then going on to pour pints without washing her hands, I could not understand the other customers not saying anything other than "bless you" or "poor thing, have you got a cold?" I obviously only had the one drink before leaving, and will think twice before using it again.
