user reviews of the Walkabout, Embankment

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Just been here absolutely shambolic dump two staff on, with less than the IQ of an Aussie flip flop between them.

20 minute wait for two overpriced pints served in nasty plastic glasses, first and very definitely last visit. Now in a proper pub The George on the Strand.

I just got back from Walkabout just now, and my only thought is "fucking hell"! I am around for the worst bar ever. In all of this vast world, of all the bars there have ever been, and all the bars there ever will be, I can safely say that I was around for the worst of all time. What a time to be alive!

You lot must be the only bar to ever be too scared to back up your own prizes in a pub quiz. Every other pub I've been too will let you spend the fucking bar tab you've won on the night. Not walkabout though, they're happy to let you book a few weeks in advance for a few hours slot in which you can spend it. Scumbags.

As soon as you use such phrases as "Terms and Conditions" and "Small Print" to debate a fucking pub quiz prize you know you've gone too far. Not only that, but it said fuck all about not spending the bar tab on the night on the small print, so you're not only scumbags but also lying scumbags.

Also, the terms your bumfluff manager used to convince us of your strategy were absolutely appalling. "If we make you come back another day to spend your bar tab, your more likely to spend some extra money on top of that, so we'll make more".

Oh brilliant, I was worried that your bullshit policy was completely nonsensical, but now I see that it was so you could squeeze even more money out of your customer, I guess it's fair enough. You're customer relations are superb.

You can forget me or any of my friends ever spending a penny in your shit establishments ever again.

Also, fair enough your deep fat fryers being down; these things happen. But not telling your customers when they order a burger meal that they can't get any chips, instead giving them a tiny dish of lettuce for no discount is yet another scummy thing to do. Sums up this shit hole. Profit first, customer a distant last.

(ps, I've been a British Soldier for nearly twenty one years, and the last person I expected to speak to me like that was a Polish bouncer ("bounce being the operative word) on my own turf.....) Nuff said, avoid this dump.)
greg1 - 5 Apr 2014 23:46
Went with the missus to watch the rugby and was hoping for a warm "Aussie welcome".......A big fat polish bouncer on the door insulted us by trying to take the piss....about turn, and out the door. My first and last visit to this hole......
greg1 - 5 Apr 2014 23:41
I went to this pub on Sunday afternoon for a pint. It was really busy - I was told that this was unusual. Loads of TVs on the walls for various sports. I didn't think this was too bad. It's a place for watching sport on TV or nipping into for a pint (it's along the Embankment). Expensive, but then all Central London pubs are IMO.

This was my first visit here. I don't know how I never noticed this place before.
hertsboy - 9 Apr 2013 11:43
Went in here just before midday last Tuesday 22nd May. My Two friends and I were the first (and only) customers. Staff were still preparing bar!. Typicall walkabout, bare floors TV and Fruit Machines everyhere. I would imagine this place (like other Walkabouts) are packed during Sporting Events and at Night. Notice as we went in said ALL Beers 2:50 a Pint, so we opted for good old Vicoria Bitter (VB), and was promptly charged 4:25p for a Stubbie. Needs people for an Atmosphers, will leave this Bar to the younger Crowed in the Evenings and plump for a more Traditional Pub in Future.
Bitter_Man - 26 May 2012 13:09
Highly recommended. Never any trouble, good selection of drinks, still cheaper then most other places, polite bouncers, good crowd, 50/50 male to female ratio. Good music, mixture of chart, hiphop and cheese. Always have sport on the big screens and if there is a major tennis/golf tournament on, they will often leave the screens on throughout the evening. Also play MOTD on saturday. and Tvs in the toilets. Basically it is a sportsbar that turns into a night club. Sportscafe in Haymarket should take note!

Only downside it it used to be really cheap (1.50 for vodka/redbull) but prices have doubled in the last 2 years. This is a pity because it used to be a cheap place with a great atmosphere, away from the bright lights of picadilly/mayfair/leicster SQ. But now its expensive, the edge has been taken off. Guess this is a perfect example of the recession. Have shut down a few bards (leicster sq, islington) and doubles the prices in their popular ones.

Very average cover bands, who sometimes kill the atmosphere.

Cheap(ish) drinks + good DJ + MOTD + girls = WIN
godson - 4 Sep 2011 15:52
Not a pub. Its a chain aussie bar, and its awful.
janatan - 3 Mar 2011 15:54
not a good place to watch the Ashes, especially if you an Ossie...LOL
Kyer1 - 24 Aug 2009 13:18
not as bad as many walkabouts. you will get hassled by bingo winged aussie girls but its a good size and never feels that busy. not a bad option for an afternoon skiving work to watch the cricket
westyw9 - 10 Aug 2007 16:55
Cavernous, characterless dive.

There is one redeeming fauture - if you're in there of an afternoon, there's a good chance you'll see mice.

beardhorse - 9 May 2007 15:37
Absolutely totally and utterly bloody horrible place.
Cleversaz - 7 May 2007 16:42
OmG People this club i've been too a few times its not my scene at all when they have live bands emmm fridays are a little better but the music is not good at all quite old and finally the bouncers are the rudest people i've ever come across thay are rude and arragont you cant even trip in there without getting trown out!!!!
xdx - 18 Apr 2007 17:26
rather good for a walkabout pub.
cheap beer for the location.
good for a bit of speed drinking
but wouldnt want to spend all day in there.
becks007 - 12 Feb 2007 19:57
Popped in here on a Sunday lunch time expecting Your usual Walkabout crowd, very suprised!!!!! Beer was good, music wasn't blasting out as in your 'normal' Walkies and the clientele were 'normal' too! Will venture in again, but maybe not during the nighttime hours so as to not spoil My opinions of this pub.
DirtyPanda - 9 Feb 2007 07:05
A bad pub. with bad people. Toilets is stinkking bad
anonymous - 6 Feb 2007 18:00
Why don't people just have Sky Sports piped directly to their brains, save the bother? Sheesh. At least I know where I don't want to go.
anonymous - 4 Feb 2007 22:02
Re "Anonymous" comment 6 April 06 and others, to make a complaint, contact Regent Inns plc, 77 Muswell Hill, London, N10 3PJ (020 8375 3000). Also buy a few shares and make yourselves a nuisance at the AGM!
stevet37 - 10 Dec 2006 19:28
Avoid this chain like the plague - responsible for refusing entry to a young lady who was wearing a hat to hide her hair loss due to her treatment for leukaemia. Disgraceful.
anonymous - 10 Dec 2006 19:19
Good pub for the sports. Nice in the afternoon for lunch. Decent service considering how rammed it can get. Not the best when the band etc starts as it gets to loud and it seems people aren't ready for a band that early in the evening. Never really had any problems with the bouncers but I have heard of others that have.
Chav_man - 20 Jul 2006 09:35
I used to frequent this bar occasionally on Saturday nights and always enjoyed myself. The atmosphere was normally decent and the music nearly always good. However, the bouncers can be difficult, it can take an age to get served and when its finally time to pay, you won't necessarily be too impressed with the prices. All in all, this place is okay. I have one or two niggles with it, but other than that, its recommended.
HTM69 - 13 Jun 2006 13:47
Good pub during England football matches, otherwise, just average.

The highlight would be one red head bar staff with enourmous fun bags.
Hard_pork - 20 Apr 2006 12:39
I've just read the previous 33 reviews of this place and agree with the majority of them. This Walkabout (like the rest I suppose) was loud and packed but overall we all had a great night. It was just the little things which were annoying - being sent outside to take a phone call, surly and agressive bouncers (the ones inside, the door staff were OK) and toilet attendants who really think they deserve a quid just for handing you a piece of paper towel. The drinks were normal for this kind of place and the prices didn't seem too astronomical, although that might have been because I was too drunk to care by then... Anyway, I'll give it 6/10 because I've been to far far worse!
kingston_toon - 13 Mar 2006 16:32
I'm not surprised to read the reviews below. I've been here on several occasions because of convenience of location, but for no other reason. It's a terrible, terrible place, and I absolutely defy anyone (ok, maybe not an Australian) to argue otherwise. The beer is expensive, poorly kept, and the choice is laughable. The bar staff are surly, and although I'd like to say the same for the bouncers, I'm not going to flatter them - is there really any need to ask me to go outside to use my mobile when it's pouring with rain, and the music inside is so loud I couldn't hear myself, let alone the person on the end of the line? Apparently it's not allowed in the foyer. I asked why and was threatened with being thrown out.

Don't go here. It's designed for obnoxious people, so unless that's you, walk past this place and find one of the many preferable options in the area.
womble54321 - 24 Feb 2006 15:34
I was in the Walkabout last night, having a lovely evening with my girl friends, dancing, enjoying the music, atmosphere and needed to go to the toilets. After coming out and walking down the passage way back to my friends, I was suddently gripped by these two bouncers and they literally threw me out the doors. I was absolutely shocked, and asked them what was wrong - to which they replied, 'You too drunk'! I was so angry for them accusing me of being too drunk when I was behaving perfectly normal, I certainly was not making a name for myself, out on the pull, or getting my 'tits' out like some people would do and I most certainly was not too drunk. To increase their ostrich brain mentality, I asked them very nicely to please let my friends know and to get my coat! It was icy cold outside and snowing. All I had was a pair of jeans and a top on. They refused point blank and told me that if I do not get out of their face, they would call the police! They were aggressive, holding me tight and shoving me around. I actually could not believe what they were doing. They left me stranded, I had no money, no warm clothes and my friends had no idea what happened to me. No wonder girls get raped and murdered because it is pr*cks like these guys that have half an ostrich brain to even think of doing something like what they did to me. I hope you idiots read this and remember, it's us that go their that pay for your jobs and perhaps you should pay more attention to what your job should actually be (protecting people) instead of being egocentric, self absorbed morans. I will never ever go back their again, that place needs a reality check and so do those horrible, horrible, nasty, mean little boys dressed in coats to big for them!
anonymous - 28 Jan 2006 19:43
Situated on the Embankment next to Temple tube station, this is a much larger establishment than its Covent Garden equivalent. The drinks are standard fare but expensive even for this area. The interior is bright, soulless and lacking in character. It has the usual array of TVs mainly for sport but basically has nothing special to make you go out of the way for, a bit like most Walkabouts really.
RogerB - 18 Nov 2005 12:38
most of the reviews for this are out date...

i was there last night...

we had a massif crowd about 30 people...so not much mingling with the neutrals... generally the punters was friendly...the bar staff was friendly...funny and efficient...no probs with bouncers...it seemed that they were almost not there...

Music was alright...Dj did play a wide range of music....to suit everyones needs

had a moment where posh snobby gits were being dikheads... a girl behind was dancing with her man...she kept bumping into me...doing it on purpose...then she waved me to go away shooo shooo...i was liek U WOT? her bloke looked away....he werent gettin involved...chicken shit.... then she made a L sign and called me a looser....haha yea right wat ever darling.... i werent moving...

then a random weird thing happened... bouncer came n gave me a chair...lol weird....sorry m8 im str8!!

7/10

I've been to the Temple Walkie about 10 times in the past six weeks, but am pleased to say reality has kicked in and I doubt I'll be going back. The bouncers are 50/50 - the ones who speak English and are on the door are usually good, but the monkey thugs inside are rude and more agressive than most of the male patrons! The bar prices go up and down depending on the time and how attractive the person serving you thinks you are - obviously the higher you rate, the cheaper the drinks (we've experimented by sending different girls to the bar to check!). The floor is disgusting and the lady in the toilet is rude to anyone who doesnt tip her yet by 10pm hardly any of the toilets have got paper in the them and usually the odour of vomit is strong, so why the hell does she expect a tip?? The music though is normally really good, and mostly the people I've met there are pretty easygoing, so if you don't mind the staff, you should have a good night.
anonymous - 14 Aug 2005 11:49
When I was in London a few months back we walked apst this walkabout in the day n thought oh my thats big and as we love walkabout so much in Lincoln we decided to go there that night. Got charged a really stupid amount even though it hadn't gone the time when the price was to go up to that, but never mind we had no trouble with the bouncers from what I can remember, so so many different nationalities tourists etc in here coz its an international chain isnt it, there was a band on a really good band and we pulled some lads from Westham and then their chavvy girlfriends came with their huge earrings and tiny skirts. we shit ourselves but they were the first sign of chav we saw all night.
Also met some american who had his tattoos done by Spider Web in 'Nam, but that's not for here.
Holly87 - 17 Jul 2005 16:37
I've been to this place quite a few times, both on Fridays and Saturdays. Last time was a week ago. Saturdays are better as there is live music. The bands are usually great. I've never eaten there, so cannot comment on the food, but the drinks are slightly pricey (as they are everywhere). The DJ is also great and plays a little bit of everything. Great place to meet people, dance and have a nice time. The best of the chain. Strongly recommended.
Dory - 27 Apr 2005 13:43
I agree with the negative comments about this place. Was watching the marathon yesterday with my girlfriend and thought this might be a good place to stop off for some liquid refreshment. After waiting ages to get served at the bar (only two bar staff on -good planning guys) we decided to head upstairs to the roof terrace (after all, there was a poster on the wall inviting punters to enjoy a drink in the sun or something). As i went to go up the steps at the back a bouncer forcefully grabbed my arm and then started babbling something in broken english about not being allowed to bring my drink outside. I won't bore you with the details but suffice it to say i was sufficiently annoyed to leave the place after one drink. It irks me when you go innocently go somewhere for a drink and through no fault of your own you have to deal with being jossled and spoken to in a rude manner. In addition, if you are going to work in a job where communication is key then I'd have thought a basic command of the English language would be a necessary pre-requisite. Clearly not the case at the Walkabout! One to avoid.
anonymous - 18 Apr 2005 13:14
This is the worst pub I have ever been to in my life! The bouncers have no brains, big muscles, and an ego thats big enough to fill a train car. They kicked me out saying I was causing trouble all night (I had only been there for 5 minutes!) The toilets smell, their is one of those annoying attendants in them, the beer is flat, the floor is disguisting, and the music sounds like a disco at an old folks home. This is London, not Australia, so please don't try to be something your not.
anonymous - 1 Feb 2005 17:30
The bouncers in here are the worst of the worst...I was told off twice by the same bouncer...and I didnt do nothing!!! he also seemed to have his special area on top of the stairs...I was certainly not welcome there...dont know why??? Complete idiot! the floor was dirty and full of broken class...cut my finger and ruined my boots...other than that I had a good night (maybe because i was in the company of some good friends??)...the music wasnt too bad either!
IvyIvyIvy - 15 Jan 2005 16:49
I had the unfortuniate pleasure of experiencing this Pub on Saturday night and can only confirm the arrogence of the bouncers. We arrived around 7.30, ordered food, first mistake I didn't think it was possible to make crumbed fish and chips taste so bad but burnt fish pieces and soggy cold chips is not a winner. 2nd mistake was my wife dancing in a spot where the bouncer likes to stand!!!! Which we didn't know until we were pushed aside by the bouncer and it all happened before Midnight a night spoiled and a place to stay away from.
bobandterri - 10 Jan 2005 10:18
If you think you've seen it all, go to this place. A huge waiting lounge of a bar with absolutely no redeeming features whatsoever. Aggressive and inattentive staff (who wear t-shirts saying "if you are drunk, you are out" - charming!), terrible service, random prices which go up and up the later it gets - generally a very uncomfortable and unpleasant experience. It no doubt needs bouncers because of the people it attracts - not sure that employing people more cretinous than the clientele to be the bouncers is particularly sensible though.
K - 14 Oct 2004 13:46
I cant believe how agressive and arrogant the South African bouncer was at the walkabout, all because I was using my cell phone in the lobby. It a real shame cause it wrecked part of the evening. The bar staff were fantastic.
ac_gregory - 8 Oct 2004 18:10
I am never going again thanks to the bouncers! Had exactly the same experience as the other reviewer, as did my mate about three months ago.
AVOID!!
debbie - 20 Sep 2004 13:14
every time I'm in London I always go to WALKABOUT It's the best pub I've ever been to!!!music - fantastic, drinks - cheap, people - very kind. Go there and you won't regret!!
marta - 19 Sep 2004 17:53
Great place on a Saturday night if you just want to have a few beers, chill and hear live music. Beware though that your shoes will be trashed as you walk through the the quarter of an inch thick of tacky syrupy goo on the floor.
Nick - 7 Sep 2004 15:56
Still a great pub, but agree about the bouncers. They seem to think that they are the most important people in the world and their job is to stop people having fun.

Still i guess you cant have everything - just a shame though as their behaviour even seems to intimidate and upset the bar staff.
anonymous - 7 Sep 2004 13:36
Good music, Good girls and Cheap Tequilla. What more can u ask for... is that TVs in the toilets lads? well guess what... its got those too!!! It is the ideal place to go for a good night out dancing or getting pissed.
J T - 4 Feb 2004 12:35
I was there a few days ago on the 8th January and it seemed the busiest place at 11pm in London. Bar wasn't full or anywhere near being full but there was plenty of girls on the small dance floor. Have a meetup on the 22nd so may just tell everyone to go there seems like an alright place.
DeeInLondon - 17 Jan 2004 08:23
Yes - bouncers are utter f*ck-wits, I should know as I got smacked in the gut by one! - Would I go back... hell yes! - Loads of dirty birds and a great atmosphere - just steer clear of the gorillas at the door.
Ben - 16 Jan 2004 17:19
Fantastic venue for watching sport - saw the England vs Turkey game, England vs Samoa and Rugby World Cup final here. The atmosphere was superb and Aussies and English mixed very happily after the game. The singing after the World Cup Parade was great as well. Loads of attractive and very nice girls in here. Food is cheap and tasty only minus point are the beer prices but they do serve snakey. Overall best pub i have been to in ages with lots of happy memories.
anonymous - 11 Dec 2003 14:27
This Walkabout had everything in place for a dire evening - overcrowded, cheesy music, binge drinking - but I pulled a lovely tall girl, making it a great night. Gutted that I didn't get her contact details...
Ruby - 8 Oct 2003 12:37
I went there on a friday night and the place was booming...although i can't remember much
Namz - 5 Aug 2003 10:21
There is nice Tucker here but the bouncers are bloody galars!...everything else is Faired Incom...Good'ay sports
Bruce Koala Kangaroo - 22 Jul 2003 17:32
Its great...cool...happening man...can't get enough... I am sit there all the time! p.s. I'm the 3rd bar stool from the entrance xx
Colin - 22 Jul 2003 17:20
I hate this place. Later on in the evening they turn the beer taps off and force people to drink bottles. The worst part about it is that they LIE to you and tell you that all the beer barrels are empty - yeah right!
Dont go near the place!
S - 2 May 2003 11:13
It's fine until being a woman you need the toilet and get felt up by the butch woman who works in the womans toilet. NOT a very pleasant experience - and will I go back - forget it.
anonymous - 18 Feb 2003 08:38
I agree, the bouncers are tossers and there's a severe lack of fit women.
Steve - 12 Feb 2003 16:01
Bouncers are complete power tripping tossers! Watch out
anonymous - 14 Jan 2003 15:01
Make no mistake this place is full of juankers! Most people only go once to this place. It's part-owned by some Rugger Bugger.
Adrian Yorke - 7 Oct 2002 23:58
It's closed down - reopening as a Walkabout Inn according to sign in the window.
Chris - 2 Oct 2002 17:40
