I remember going in here in 1961 and had my first pint of Guinness.
Went in recently and although a very friendly and welcoming pub there was no real ales, only a load of the modern keg type variety. OK if you like that sort of thing but I don't.

Belhaven Black Scottish Stout and the murky grey rooftops of the Tulse Hill skyline. There's synergy right there.

A very decent pub. Now the indentikit lazy gentrification signpost that many other pubs in this part of town have become. A very good range of beers and decent friendly service.

Visited on a Saturday afternoon. Reopened at the end of 2014. Nice pint of Belhaven Black Scottish Stout. Reasonable if not remarkable range of ales on tap, mostly local London offerings. Nicely stocked bar for spirits and cocktails. Welcoming feel - not over poncey and avoiding out-of-the-box shabby chic. Mixed clientele with some toddlers amongst them. Dining area and outdoor seating out back. A nice feel to it.

Reopened with a new coat of paint. Pubs are thriving at the moment.

Closed down and boarded up. Another pub closed in this depression.

Local pub with lots of room even on a weekend. Good service.

Its another cavernous pub with an old style feel to it.
Last time I was in here years ago it felt like a definate locals haunt, was quiet on a wintery early Dec Sat afternoon visit.
Nothing unlikeable, would pop in and return.

Went to the tulse hill tavern for mothers day for dinner which was excellent big hearty portions and all home made and they had a special price for the day top marks for cooking i must say the new landlords are pulling out all the stops to get this pub running and looks like they might make it

I visited The Tulse Hill Tavern during the world cup in 2010 and I was appalled at the attitude of the staff. I have since found out that it changed hands in July 2010 and there has been a considerable change since!
The atmosphere has changed completely since the last time I went in there. There is all new bar staff and management in the pub which are much more friendly. The football was being shown as well as the rugby and the horse racing, it is clear that the staff do there upmost to keep everyone happy.
I stayed for a sunday roast dinner, and it was delicious! A good home cooked roast dinner which was enjoyed with friends whom all also enjoyed there meals to and agreed that the it was diffiently value for money at under 8 a dinner for the size if it no one can complain!!!
The beer was fresh and crisp and by far the best pint in the area!
It is clear that the new management are doing a great job and all are welcome!
Lovely afternoon!

I decided to visit the Tulse hill tavern In march. My first impression of the pub was not good and from there it only got worse and worse. After walking through the door I was applauded by the smell of the pub (It was the smell of what I would imagine a dead body to smell like), I decided to stay despite the smell and have a drink and this was my first mistake. The manager of the pub (A small man with serious attitude problem) greeted me with what I would only describe as a look of hatred and this look was shared by the other customers of the pub I would assume these were the regulars he then grunted at me what would I like and took my money he then returned to the side of the bar he was at when I entered the pub and continued to flirt with a young blond woman. I was ignored after my few attempts to make conversation so I decided to drink up and leave however I stayed because I had to meet a friend

After that the manager then walked off to talk to a young woman with black hair (probably his daughter) and continued to ignore the customers. After he returned he continued to scratch at his crouch ignoring the customers I finally had enough when my glass had been empty for over 15 minuets and i was still being ignored it was obvious I was not welcome.

overall this pub really lets itself down their is so much potential for this place but the rude ignorant excuse for a manager is clearly making no attempt to fix the pub. So I personally will go somewhere else to drink and let the man neglect his job I wont be returning so long as it is under the current management.

finally I do not like giving a review without a positive so the only positive I can think of for the Tulse hill tavern is that it sells alcohol. If you want a drink I suggest buying it from a local shop and drink at home or go somewhere else.

FYI Jedi_Clem

The new landlord is doing what should have been done ages ago!!!
Oh yeah pub not for strangers, well guess what it should be friendly and welcoming and that's exactly what the new guy is trying to do, change the image of the pub, no more scambags and drug dealers so stragers like myself can enjoy their paints without being intimidated!!!
It's only since he took the pub over I am not affraid to set my foot in there, and if there is a slightest problem he is dealing with it straight away!!!
So for your (looser) and your likes information if you don't like the way pub is run at the moment go somewhere else and let the man do his bloody job!!!!

If you are looking for a sociable & friendly atmosphere this is the wrong place for you.

It's one of the few pubs within the local area that has a big screen and shows sky sports, it also has a beer garden so it should be a great place to go on a sunny Sunday for a couple with some mates. Don't be fooled! The pub always smells horrible from the minute you enter and if you decide to go to watch the football you will be treated, as I was, to 100 decibel recitement of such chants as "<EPL FOOTBALL TEAM> ARE SH!T, <EPL FOOTBALL TEAM> ARE SH!T AND YOUR MUM IS A F*CKING DOG!"

It's not just the fact that the place smells, the patrons are loud chavs, it's incredibly dirty and dingier that a middle eastern brothel... oh wait, it is!

AVOID!
tommillion - 21 Apr 2009 14:54
Characterless large pub with pool tables and large screen for football. No real ale available at time of visit, but the locals are all lager swilling chavs anyway.
nobbythesheep - 2 Nov 2008 14:28
this pub comes into it's own on a sunday afternoon when the football is on and alot of locals turn up supporting various london clubs (arsenal, chelsea, spurs, palace), the place is full, those that have come in large groups end every sentence with 'you c_nt', if you strike up an exchange you might even recieve this privilege yourself, a good time is had by all

best pub for football in tulse hill

Well, I'm a regular visitor and I'm not over friendly, very drunk or the least bit scary. It's not the Ritz, but Tulse Hill isn't Mayfair. Remarks about staff and landlady are wide of the mark. They are friendly and helpful. Pub has NOT changed that much since last landlord left. Garden is actually better. Perhaps last poster saw it at night. As for the bogs, they could be better. But I watched landlady up to her armpit clearing the gents WC on a recent Saturday night, so staff do care. Not a fan of the Hart (don't like the beer or the way my feet stick to the carpet although I take the last remark back if they've had new carpets in the last 12 months) and like to hear myself think, so the Railway is out.

Ok so I'be been away for a while. just two short years. I've been in this pub recently and what a difference. Not a good thing. Two years ago I used to go in with my mates of an afternoon and stay till we couldn't drink anymore. The landlord was a great guy from yorkshire. His missus was a lady from New Zealand, and she fed us, cleaned the loos for us, and they spent time with us, played pool with us, put on live music for us and the customers. They thanked their customers for their custom with everything they did for the pub. They transformed the garden and were just good pub people. You wanted to go in, and the weirdos were great. The landlord and his missus put frebies on the juke box and just looked after you. Now, its dirty, the loos (ladies) are gross, the garden is not what it was, the bar staff are rude and don't acknowledge you. The landlady doesn't seem to want any custom. I still pop in cause I live across the road, but its just for that first quickie. Then I go to the railway or the white hart, or into town.
Avoid. Its no fun anymore.
hurumj - 28 Aug 2006 21:53
This pub is OK..Iv been to better, but i suppose its alright if you fancy a quick drink after work or something. Entertainment wise i think they could do better ie kareoke night on saturday...you can have a laugh at all the people who think they can sing but really cant but nine times out of ten theres only a handfull of people who turn up before 12. The bar staff are ok along with some of the other locals, but ur guaranteed to find a werdo sitting in the corner talking to themselves. The best thing about this pub is the bear gardens (front and back) relaxing in the sum with a drink in my hand is my kind of afternoon.
anonymous - 7 Jun 2006 16:26
Hmm. Very odd place really. I've been here a couple of times now, once in the evening, and once during the day. The evening visit involved a few games of pool. The usual rules of writing your name on the board are there, although the locals can spot a new visitor a mile off and ignore their names. I also don't recommend beating them at pool and staying on the table too long - one guy in particular looked pretty menacing when I won.

The beer is fine, although as Rich66 points out they don't seem to chill them very well. And the staff are crazy. Not in a 'haha, you're hilarious' kind of way, more in a 'sweet Jesus, does Springfield hospital know you're missing?' kind of way.

They also cook free food in the afternoon, so the next time a tramp asks you for money, buy him a ticket here instead. He'll definitely feel at home, I promise you.

Avoid.

womble54321 - 23 May 2006 11:08
i didnt think pubs like this still existed inside the m25! locals are either over friendly, very drunk or scary. im off to the railway where i can get a decent meal and pint for under 10 in a hassle free environment. does have useful carpark
annonymous - 19 Feb 2006 19:53
repeatedly i have tried to enter this Pub. Exterior decorations say enough. The punters and staff are like a mad max film. Their is no regard for maintenace or upkeep. The local health and safety board should get involved. KEEP AWAY. If you must drink in tulse hill then the railway kitchen and bar is the only decent boozer in the manor
anonymous - 6 Feb 2006 20:26
At first glance quite scary. Agree with most comments about locals initially. But...being a local myself, and through perseverence, have found this a friendly and decent boozer. Bar staff are very friendly particularly the landlady and the welsh blonde barmaid. A lively local pub living in the shadow of the newly revamped gastro wannabe - The Railway.
anonymous - 2 Feb 2006 21:29
I made a point of popping in for the first time as they advertise in London Drinker magazine. The place is much as described by other people below. My pint of London Pride was well kept but wasn't chilled. As I would normally have to break a journey to go here it wasn't really impressive enough to make me do that in future.
Rich66 - 11 Jun 2005 11:26
This is a warm and welcoming pub, or was. The landlord and his mrs have left and it is just not the same. I miss the teatime sandwiches, or the way that they were. The same friendly people are there, just not as often. I will still pop in for the good memories, but not as often.

Ended up in this place late on a Saturday night a few weeks ago enroute to a house party, and I quite enjoyed it. Two people have already mentioned the phrase "rough around the edges" and that is very true, probably for the pub and the people. But everyone was friendly and easy-going, noone gave a monkey's about the bags of off-licence we were carrying, the ales were good, the jukebox decent enough, and it was serving late.

I must have been enjoying myself because I normally hate karaoke, but I was even smiling at the ramshackle one in the back room.
travis - 14 Sep 2004 17:33
Although I can see why some people may find this pub unfriendly, that is more a reflection on what people are used to in London these days. The Tavern is a locals pub which is a bit rough around the edges. People who go there, go there regularly and know each other. I tend to go there when my father comes down to stay (as it's his sort of pub) and when I fancy a few quiet beers with a mate. Although I don't know the locals, they are friendly enough. The bar staff are good, they have a reasonable selection of well-kept guest real ales, the beer is cheap (1.80 a pint for London is a bargain) and the landlord is an interesting character.

Basically, if you want a dull All Bar One clone, go to The Railway nearby. If you want a pub with a bit more character, the Tulse Hill Tavern is the one.
Ziggy - 14 Sep 2004 17:08
This has to be the best pub in the world, welcoming and fun, a little rough round the edges though. The landlord is an amzing old hippy.
