user reviews of the Blue Boar, Poole

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Methinks cellarbuoy must have strayed too far from the Quay.

The prices are in keeping with the area, I know I'm slightly biased having lived in Chiswick for 15 years, but the Fullers beers are well kept. I'm usually in once or twice a week.

It's a pub for the discerning drinker - the cellar bar, open Friday and Saturday nights (and for rugby matches) caters for the Quay circuit overspill.

Still one of the best town centre / the quay area pubs. The London Pride and Seafarers are always in great condition. Most staff I've dealt with seem fine. Must have been someone's off day when previous reviewer visited. A shame.
Old_King_Cole - 11 Nov 2014 21:29
High prices and short measures, miserable staff. worth avoiding other than it stays open later than other pubs at weekends, at least a noisy downstairs bar does.
cellarbuoy - 30 Oct 2014 18:15
Fullers pub but had Seafarers on also which was superb for a lower ABV beer. Decided to have several, then the Big Boy Mixed Grill - I couldn't eat it all! A plate of good quality food at an excellent price. And a real fire!
Also much military memorabilia, which could take quite some time if you wanted to study it all.
The other punters in there were a bit clicky but that aside, a stonking pub! Absolutely worth the visit... and again the next night...

A decent Fuller's pub. If you're there on the right Sunday evening, don't miss the quiz.
16jamesdoc - 28 Aug 2012 10:43
Nice pub, and friendly staff. Pity it's Fullers, though - I live in London and if I want to have London beer at London prices, I can do it just about any time. And there was no Chiswick on offer. But good for a quiet and relaxing drink, if that's what you want.
paul154 - 30 Sep 2011 15:15
Took my family and a friend there on a particularly cold winters evening, for a drink. Two roaring log fires and friendly, welcoming staff helped to create what I perceived to be a friendly atmosphere. Lots of nautical paraphernalia adorn the walls. Definitely worth a visit.

Best pub in the area by far! There is constantly a good friendly atmosphere no matter who is working which is something most establishments fail to realise is a basic requirement for a good pub! The beers are always of a fantastic standard along with the vodka..it is obvious that Aimee rules the roost which adds to the well run family atmosphere. The food is fantastic with locally sourced ingredients and a true home cooked meal....no chain pub micro meal here!! Prices are in line with the area but the quality much higher. I would advise booking a table as with deals like 2 pie meal deals for 10 on wednesdays from the new forest bakery seats fill up fast, if ever you wanted a true good quality friendly english pub that ticks all the boxes than this is it i only wish i had more time to frequent this establishment!
IBANGMYOWNDRUM - 22 Dec 2010 20:29
Nice old fashioned pub with Fuller's, which is slightly unusual
for the area. I particularly appreciate the jazz nights on the cellar

HMS THRACIAN do you still have the Ships Bell
My Brother Stephen de Carteret was ,Drafted off to crew the HMS Thracian (D86)which had been captured
By Imperial Jap Navy ,Nippon Forces in Hong Kong 15Dec 1941 off Lamma Island and subsequently scuttled by being run aground Round Island in Repulse Bay
On the evening of the 16-17 Dec 1941,Salvaged 10 July 42 repaired and placed in service of the IJN, on the 25 Nov 42 as a patrol Vessel No 101 Reclassified on the 15 March 44
as Special training ship No 1. taken to Yokohama ,
She Returned to the R.N.Oct 1945 HMS THRACIAN was found at Yokosuka, near Tokyo after the occupation of the area in August 1945. An unsuccessful attempt to scuttle had been made and she was lying alongside a jetty where she was recovered by .
Steve in the party from HM Destroyer UNDINE in December 1945. One surprising feature was a Japanese centimetric radar fitted aft on a special mast structure and it is reported that she had been used as a Trials ship for the successful LONG LANCE torpedoes, but the ship was clearly in poor condition. She was placed on the Disposal List at Hong Kong and sold in 1946 for breaking-up locally. Miraculously the Ship's Bell survived her service and is now held by the Public House BLUE BOAR" at Poole, Dorset.
Steve was part of the theCrewcrew which was to return HMS Thracian to her home port in Hong Kong. Steve died on the 26 Sept 2010

Went into this establishment on Sunday. There is obviously a Royal Marines/Military heritage with the pub, with memorabillia and cap badges everywhere. But it certainly isn't a squaddie pub.

The prices for the beer are on the highish side, but not out of kilter with other quality beer pubs in the area. The Pride was excellent. I suspect that those complaining about the prices are used to the slops and adulterated rubbish available at certain "Chain" pubs in the area.

When I went in there was a welcoming quiz on, with a format very similar to the one run at the Darby's Corner. The main difference being the Blue Boar had a lower cacker count, and the clientele looked relatively civilised. Certainly no blarting kids, and knuckle marks left in the carpet that you sometimes get at the Darby's Corner.

The staff were polite and amusing, and they bought out lovely roast potatoes at the quiz half time.

I suppose it does appear a bit middle aged and cliquey. But, it was much more welcoming than the DC, pity no Tanglefoot, though.

Thought we give this place a try and have to agree with 2BFrank. The ratio of men to women was about 50 to 1! Nice civilised clean pub but prices absolutely horrendous. Avoid!
LadyEleanor - 7 Mar 2010 12:50
Good real ales but the prices are a complete rip-off. Best avoided unless you've got money to waste. Suspect this may be gay-orientated as very few women frequent this place and the clientele seems to be exclusively male in the 40/50s age group.
2BFrank - 28 Feb 2010 13:35
Great real ales to be had here, but fiendishly high prices are reflected by the normally near-empty state of the pub. Surely it would be better to lower the prices and fill the pub?
Meerkat1960 - 7 Oct 2009 16:11
Consistently good condition London Pride and some interesting guest beers. They had fantastic Okells Bitter on recently.

A relaxed well-run neat and tidy place with a good layout. It has a nice setting back away from the Quay and the High Street but still easy to get to.

The only very slight negative can be the too-loud fast-beat music which seemed to be aimed at a younger crowd who I've never seen in there - perhaps they can either turn it down (or off) or put some classics from the 60's 70's and 80's on. Well worth a visit.
Old_King_Cole - 15 Sep 2009 19:46
Recently paid the Blue Boar a visit after hearing it has new tenants...wow what a difference! the pub is clean, tidy, excellant beer, and seems to be a family run establishment, it has a warm and friendly atmosphere and the new tenants are always there for a chat..unlike the prevous ower!!! remcommened to all. By far the best thing that has happened to this pub since Jim and Shela, good for them!
bigdave123 - 7 Apr 2009 12:28
Seeing as cageyjoe asked, Nick the Guv'nor returned to London to turn round a Market Taverns pub, the Stamford Arms. As far as I know he's still there.
TiaMariaJim - 23 Jan 2009 13:48
Not a particularly interested party Mapwizard, I just dont like to see a perfectly good pub being slagged off as part of someones personal feelings about the landlady. I did say in my post that I hadnt found any of the problems that bigB mentioned.
Nurke - 24 Dec 2008 08:19
So what happened to the self-proclaimed 'Guvnor', Nick?
anonymous - 18 Dec 2008 04:15
As a very frequent visitor to Poole - and its pubs - I would confirm that originalbigB's comments are accurate about the Blue Boar's staff and their habits. It is noteworthy that Nurke - a seemingly interested party - makes no denial.
mapwizard - 8 Dec 2008 13:26
I dont find any of the problems that originalbigB mentions below and I would say that given the number of reviews that he has written, he has a personal vendatta against the landlady and is using this forum as a place to vent his feelings, this is not what Beerintheevening is about. I have asked the admins to look into this and the post by GayleRoss, which is just a direct attack on the landlady.
Nurke - 8 Dec 2008 13:15
unfortunately the horrid self obsessed nasty piece of work anna has taken this pub on in the last 3 or so months. over the years ever since the kellaway empire built this pub i have always enjoyed spending time here. those days however are gone. awful atmosphere 16 year old girls swearing shouting barking and bellowing from behind the bar, thats if your lucky enough to see them as the majority of time the bar is completely unattended while the whole staff team congregate outside to smoke cigarettes and hang out with friends. the customers sadly have dwindled away probably due to the broken heaters.its a sad shame what a few months can do to what was once a friendly fun enjoyable place to come
originalbigB - 29 Nov 2008 20:58
Absolutley Marvelous pub....Great staff, Great surroundings, and what an improvement from how it was this time last year. The cellar bar is amazing with a great atmosphere, and the main bar looks clean and well kept.
Good Job!
louise757 - 4 Nov 2008 01:01
My God the thing that manages the Lord Nelson works here, Horrid!
GayleRoss - 30 Sep 2008 13:55
we payed a visit to this character packed pub on sunday afternoon after a very good recommendation. my family and i decided to have the 2 course sunday lunch. the food is outstanding completely home cooked and excellent value for money. unfortunately we found the blonde lady/girl serving at bar was quite unwelcoming and dare i say a little rude. however, the pub in itself is stunning and with the standard of food we will be returning.
jonmoore - 6 May 2008 21:44
Marvellous. I just hope it doesn't get as crowded as the Market Porter so I can continue to enjoy my pint in this lovely place.
pxk99 - 13 Apr 2008 20:57
Well it looks like Londons loss is Pooles gain. The Guvner certainly knows his stuff, he has injected a new leese of life into the place that will certainly bring me back. I agree with "whippit" that Fullers arn't my faverite beer but the quality in this place is great.
This is a cracking boozer, with a great feel to it & I can only see it going from stregnth to stregnth.

soothpark - 23 Mar 2008 13:03
This pub is getting better and better.

I don't normally like Fullers ales, but I'm undergoing an epiphany due to this place. The 'Discovery' is beautiful.

Staff very nice and welcoming too.
man_versus_horse - 7 Mar 2008 00:23
Nick was called the guv'nor during his time at the market porter borough market, because he is the consumate pub landlord (al murry fans go and see him).
I am sure the blue boar will be the perfect stage for Nick, my favourite landlord.
Dejaz - 19 Jan 2008 23:00
Once again the Market Porters Nick has moved and has now bought the lease of this unbeleiveably unique pub in the old town, It is ram packed full of nautical memorabilia and has a hidden gem in its basement!!!
Go down there and check it out. although the ales are supplied by fullers they are all in excellent condition and the staff are a delight. Well worth a visit to seaside
whippit - 16 Nov 2007 15:29
Nice pint, pub clean, almost has a managed house feel about it.
nonetheless a dam good pint of ale. well worth a visit.
davidashford - 29 Sep 2007 23:15
Best pub in Poole by a mile.
PWA - 15 Jun 2007 21:35
I was in Poole for work and popped in yesterday. The place was quite busy at lunchtime. I had no idea what were good/bad pubs in Poole but I was lucky and picked a good one, spending a pleasant 30 minutes over a well-kept pint doing the crossword.I didn't eat but the food looked good at the adjacent table.
A pleasant, calm pub with a friendly staff. The radio was off, SJC.
Ordinary - 23 May 2007 12:28
Excellent pub, making yet another choice of beer available in Poole.

Fullers is a real brewery, with tradition and it tastes as good now as it did when I first tried it in the 1970's.

Dave_Jon_n_Bob - 7 Jan 2007 10:45
This is a brilliant pub, the best in Poole by far.

Brilliant staff, great atmosphere when its busy and excellent in the winter with the fires burning. (Questionable christmas decor though... WTF singing snowmen...??!!)

To SJC... if the local radio is a problem, the bar staff are really friendly and extremly helpful, i'm sure if it was bothering you you could just ask for it to be turned down a little rather than making issue out of it!!

Sells:

London Pride
ESB
Discovery
HSB is on all the time

Chiswick bitter is also on tap

Guest ale changes every so often but its generally Fullers stuff now...

Largers include

Kronenberg
Carlsberg
Grolsh

and they sell Guinness extra cold

dont forget cider...

Scrumpy on tap (the clear one not the cloudy one)
Strongbow
Magners (bottle not tap)

ALL of the spirits (even shots!!) are sold in 35ml measures - BARGAIN!!!!

Despite now being owned by a chain this is still a proper pub not a converted hell hole like many of the chain pubs now...

Pay it a visit, you'll be pleased you did :o)
anonymous - 29 Dec 2006 00:57
Doesn't sell the full Fullers range. Went in to sample Fullers London Porter and they don't stock it !!!!!
david1972a - 22 Dec 2006 20:28
Poole has too many pubs. This one, however, although empty at 5pm on a Monday, has potential. It is very clean and tidy and the Fullers ESB was good. Where are the customers? Does it make a profit?
dorsetknob - 10 Oct 2006 16:59
Nice pub marred by bland offering of Fuller's beers and the inane racket from a local radio station played through loudspeakers on a Saturday lunchtime. Fullers are becoming slaughterers of choice.
SJC - 30 Jul 2006 21:50
Now owned by Fullers, so a better range of real ales and friendly service. Also two great pubs (Angel and Queen Mary) very close by.
anonymous - 8 Jan 2006 17:44
Had a great pint of Cottage Southern bitter when I was in there recently. Place was virtually empty however which was a shame but the explanation probably lies in the fact that there was a squalling brat present shrieking at the top of his/her voice. Would like to have stayed longer but wandered over to The Angel instead.
johnkn7 - 24 Aug 2005 22:21
