user reviews of the Lass O'Richmond Hill, Richmond

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Visited late on Sunday evening but found it rather unwelcoming. A forgettable pint, without much condition (can't remember what it was). A few staff wandering around but the evening's mess was still everywhere. Must go back another time. We were staying locally and it was the first time we had been back there since 1975 when it was totally different in character - a proper local.

Had lunch here yesterday, food was fine and reasonably priced for pub grub. Specials seem a bit dear, 26 for a steak. Had a lovely pint of Twickenham's Naked Ladies, great to see Young's including local beers. Decor is fitting and service was top notch, will definately be back, hopefully to have a session and watch the rugby 8/10.

A good pub for several reasons. You can sit and drink beer at the front, eat informally along the side or more formally at the back. I've done all three and will do all three again. Cosy, welcoming and lively.

Wonderful atmosphere but the staff can be too intrusive interrupting your conversations and privacy by asking if you have finished your meal quite often and trying to take your glass away even when you have not finished yet.

Why is that necessary, it is a pub should be more easy.

It is over priced but still that is not as annoying as the service and the fact that the menu is quite limited.

Constant Irish music some evening in the week can be a bit too much.

Visited just after Christmas. I found it to be expensive, Pint of bitter, Large glass of Shiraz and a bowl of nuts, 12.10. Nice pub but too expensive.

Not a beardy real ale drinkers kind of pub but plenty of choice of ales on the taps.
Not sure if it was just because it is Winter but it is very pleasant inside - a nice warm fire and I found the service to be excellent.
Food was very impressive for what is essentially a gastropub but as previous comments have mentioned maybe a bit too pricey... Came to 70 for 2 with no wine or dessert (just 4 beers) but still is a place I will return to.
Very nice part of town to go for a walk afterwards too with Richmond Park and stunning views from Richmond Hill nearby.

Just got home from spending the evening in front of the roaring log fire and had to post a comment here!

I have lived in the area for years and have seen the ups and DOWNS of the Lass. Glad to say this is the best it has ever been. 8 well kept real ales and a fantastic range of Whisky's including JW blue label by the glass! Although 19.50 per glass is a little expensive!

Food was fantastic and the staff couldn't do enough for us. The big fridge of meat makes the mouth water and the steak certainly lived up to the hype. The waitress was very helpful and even helped us when we asked for different dishes to the menu.

Can't wait to spend another evening in front of the fire with a Winter warmer and would definitely recommend!

Not a beer drinkers place at all. Poncey and food orientated.
nickthefish - 11 Feb 2010 19:59
Quite a pleasant place to sit inside with a pint in the Winter months -if you can find a seat that is, as half the place is given over to diners and the menu is somewhat on the pricey side.
The service however is slow at the best of times, as they seem far too busy serving over complex food.

Sorry, I've been popping in here for several years now. Sadly last nights food deserves very negative comment.

Accompanied by a vegetarian, I was embarassed by what was presented to them as a meal; a saucer sized dish containing approximately 1/4 inch of cheese sauce with two pieces of artichoke and some diced butternut squash, this in turn supporting a huge bubble of air which was enclosed by a piece of over inflated "puff" pastry. This, nearly 8.00 "pie" was accompanied by a few meagre slices of sweet potato.

This portion size and content was not very satisfying to an adult appetite. Does whoever prepares the menu for this establishment think that vegetarians don't eat the same volume as the rest of us?

This meagre attempt at adequate catering for vegetarians focused my attention on what had been presented to myself, I had ordered the 8 oz Rump Steak with chips, tomato and mushroom @ 9.80; that's exactly what I got; one solitary meagre sized mushroom and one half of a grilled tomato all accompanied by about 8 - 10 chips.

I looked at my other companions plate, they had ordered the grilled gammon and their vegetable portions / garnish was no different.

We duly complained to the waiting staff, who were both very polite and sorry about our disappointment. They did agree to pass on our comments to their Chef and they did offer us dessert, one of us is diabetic, so we chose to pay and leave.

Enough is enough, these three (supposed) main courses and three drinks cost us the best part of 40.00 (including tip), yes we left a tip, after all it wasn't the waiting staffs fault.

It seems to me that Richmond is becoming over subscribed by the influences of the large Pub Company's policies where the ethos is to homogenise the pub culture by supplying their customers with the occasional easy chair and a "National Trust" themed decor with very little else, all of tis at over inflated prices!

When I expressed my viewpoint on their companies pricing to a staff member, a polite comment was made "yes but this is Richmond Hill". Implying perhaps that we ought to be prepared to pay a litlle bit more for eating in this location.

Living in Richmond, I fail to see how this fact should affect pub prices, for a 4 or 5 star hotel yes but a pub No!

A pub is a pub and Richmond is full of them and if the management of this establishment are in any doubt they should look at the number of "covers" they had on Saturday evening! When we left at 8.30 pm. this establishment was half empty.

Whoever is in charge of all of this, could you please get it right.

three extensive menus (large main menu, lighter snack menu, and a specials sheet) AND a daily fish board could be whittled down to one really great menu which might help with the speed of service as they seemed to struggle with quite a simple order (1 burger, 1 jacket potato) during a quiet period.

couldnt fault the staff though - very knowledgeable and friendly. and the 'large' glass of wine is ENORMOUS!
.sweeney - 8 Aug 2008 16:54
Courage Best and Bombadier available, and extensive wine list. Wide selection of food dishes all the way from top of the range to the lightest snacks; reasonably priced, quickly served and high quality. The tragedy is that this would be the perfect place to combine with a walk in Richmond Park (Richmond Gate is just one block away) if it weren't for the severe parking restrictions in the pub's own car park, enforced by a third party organisation. Appparently you only have to walk up the street and back, and you're clamped! As a result, on a Friday lunchtime the huge pub car park was almost deserted, and the pub was really quiet too. If you want to walk into the park from a pub, try the New Inn at Ham, or the Ham Brewery Tap.
Trev - 25 Jul 2008 17:37
does well combining restaurant with a pub atmosphere: cosy in the winter, decent menu and beer
mozzzzzz - 17 Jun 2008 12:13
As has been mentioned this has been re-furbished as a gastro-pub, however the front part still has a pub feel and it has been rather tastefully done. Very comfortable armchairs and lots of them. The current 5/10 rating is way off - should be higher. Nice for a quiet drink on a Sunday night - didn't sample the food so can't comment.
discerningdan - 3 Mar 2008 18:57
Great pub/restauurant thats brilliant in the wonter, given the warm and welcoming atmosphere and open log fire! Food was excellent - could have more beers available, but the ones they do have are well looked after non the less. One of my faves in Richmond at the moment.
Scottmal - 28 Dec 2007 14:28
Little Chef? Beefeater?
Thought we would give it a go since the re-vamp, but sadly very disappointed. Hadnt even finished the starter when the mains arrived, had to practically clear our own plates away to make available space. Followed by, over cooked Fish, under cooked chips! Not good for the standard pub meal!
Boring and bland!

anonymous - 26 Oct 2007 23:21
Clean. Quiet.

The interior looks like it has been refreshed recently. Appearance no different from any of 5,000 other pubs.

London Pride not available, Bombardier passable.

Seems mainly orientated towards meals. I just fancied a steak, but the prices for the main means are excessive, so I passed.

Magellan - 16 Oct 2007 18:29
Post-refit, this is really a restaurant, not a pub, although it does have three (standard) ales on tap. You notice that all the recent reviews relate to the food, not the drink or the pub atmosphere, because you wouldn't go there for that.
beeronaut - 1 Jul 2007 18:22
I like the atmosphere of this pub and the food is edible, though nothing amazing.

If you have an aversion to kids then do not venture in here for Sunday lunch - you have been warned!
sem07 - 14 Mar 2007 13:57
I visited this restaurant last Sunday & it was fanastic. The food was absolutely exceptional, We all ate from the specials board & the food certainly was special. The only downside was our server (anna) who along with many others in the industry beleive they are the best when in fact they now nothing about customer service (loose the fake smile) & arguing with what I can only guess is your poor boyfriend in Polish rather than English does not make it ok to do so in front of customers. all the other staff were brilliant & could not of looked after us any better. We will definetly be back soon. Well done & a special thanks to the chef
jadecheddars - 16 Jan 2007 15:35
Food good although not outstanding, but a very plesant Sunday afternoon nonetheless.
couldwehaveaneel - 28 Oct 2006 11:16
I went there with my husband and a couple of friends on Sunday. We wanted to show the friends what a great place this was - we both have fond memories of great food and service. But how we were proved wrong. Since I was there last (a couple of years ago) it has swiftly gone downhill. The food was still great but it took about an hour to arrive, and they had run out of most roast dinners. Trying to get any member of staff's attention took about 20 minutes on average each time. And then they had the audacity to over-charge us! The cheek. I will not be rushing back. Yes to Jason!
brionyot - 4 Oct 2006 15:53
maybe somebody should ask Jay first if he wants this job back.........
lady4 - 2 May 2006 16:34
going going & nearly gone, this is a restaurant & not a pub however this place glistened above all the rest not so long ago wether for a beer or a meal. I still dine hear regularly however it is going down hill fast ever since a member of staff called Jason left. If the company that owns this establishment knows what is good for them they will hunt Jason down & get him back (fast). Now it is run by polish people & the managers are (exscuse my language) a shower of s**t. No one smiles anymore & they just want there 5 an hour, no one is motivated or cares for the customers. My petition starts here, please put your name & location & "yes to jason" & I will print & forward to their company

YES TO JASON

Crap staff, over priced everything. No atmosphere at all.
Merlot - 31 Mar 2006 19:08
I would say that the food was OK and reasonably priced. It also has a really nice feel. But the management! They are consistantly so rude. It wouldn't be unusual to stand at the bar when nobody else is waiting to be served and have to wait 10 minutes to be acknowledged. The landlady is very surly and has complete inability to smile - she really makes you feel uncomfortable. I've gone back on a few occasions to give them the benefit of the doubt - hoping that they've just had a bad day. Unfortunately it's always a bad day in there and I can't be bothered any more...
pinot - 18 Jan 2006 09:35
A terrible place. Dark, stuffy, with an unpleasant smell which I can only guess is coming from the old manager's remains under the floor somewhere. If the staff can speak English, they will probably be rude to you. Usually, the staff outnumber the clientele by two to one and yet it can take upwards of ten minutes for the bar-staff to even acknowledge you. Overpriced beer and 2.50 for 15 or so olives? There are three or four tables in the beer 'garden' which is actually a cracked and battered car-park. Aggressive ginger-haired type who is the current manager, who unless you are over 50 years old and buying a three course meal will not even grace you with a smile. I actually witnessed someone getting thrown out because they ordered a dessert with a pint of beer, but refused to order a main meal first. Please burn this place down and start again. Ye gads.
Rayzer - 17 Jan 2006 16:43
An eating pub rather than one to go boozing in. Fairly quite and sedate when we went but the food and service were beyond reproach. A good no smoking area and it is generally clean. An extensive menu but a little more expensive than some other for food, but the quality is good.
PubReviewer6 - 25 Oct 2005 18:02
I remember this pub when it was the Old Orleans, and it was indeeed, a pub. Good beer, mixed drinks and fun staff. Now...not so sure. A bit pretentious.
carmeng - 14 Jul 2005 09:49
Does seem to be more of a restaurant than a pub, but the food is good, the real ale was well kept, and while the music may be too bland, the decor makes for a good meal. Staff was a bit slow, but an overall good experience if you are having a meal.
Mr.Matt - 20 May 2005 04:20
I've been going to this pub for ages and I still get treated rather rudely by the bar staff, especially the manager. No matter how much money you spend in this pub (or "restaurant"), if you're under 40 you're likely to get a frosty reception. Double that if you're a student.
zoo - 4 Apr 2005 18:36
The Lass O'Richmond Hill is more a restaurnant than a pub, and as a restaurant it excels. Though pricey, the food is excellent. They serve the best pub steak I've had in London, and the other meals on their extensive menu are equally superb. However if you're not eating there's little point in coming here; it's true that the service is not great, as most of the staff wait tables. There's not a great selection of beer, and the music is quite the blandest of easy listening jazz. Verdict? One to take your Mum to when she visits, but go elsewhere for a pint.
DaveMere - 18 Mar 2005 12:33
A delightful pub with all the charm you would expectfrom a wonderful area. I felt a bit uneasy when i walked in but i was soon made to feel at home. A member of staff called Jay looked very busy but went out of his way to look after as I made it clear it was my first visit. the food was excellent & the staff were very professional yet friendly. If you visit & feel out of place track down Jay & he will surely help you, he obviously cares very much for this pub & its customers. many thanks ill be back
argyle - 2 Mar 2005 18:33
The miscellany of smells emanating from the 'posh nosh' they serve there made me want to gag. One member of staff allocated to bar duty. After ten minutes waiting alongside 5 or 6 other punters I'd had enough and so left. It was Sunday and it was busy, like I'm sure they knew it would be. I shall not be returning. A sham
Good for: Groups of teetotal, patient, hungry posh people.
thenationofjames - 25 Feb 2005 14:01
A lovely atmosphere. Really good food. The staff however are as miserable as anything, which really ruins an almost perfect 'country' pub.
pinot - 24 Feb 2005 17:47
celebrated my 50th Birthday here.Food and atmosphere great, and fast service too.
Highly recommend it.

Lovely, cosy, friendly, great, love it!
Jane - 17 Aug 2004 12:51
Have and will continue to recommend this pub to all i meet. The Lass is a very friendly and warm pub. The food was exceptional with the best wine to match. My thanks to the staff.
Andy - 12 Aug 2004 17:38
went for a meal last night & could not beleive I had not known about this place before. FANTASTIC. The food, wine, service all amazing & I will surely be returning this weekend. I have finally found somewhere that deserves my hard earned cash.
The manager (Jason) was so welcoming & enhanced our evening with his wonderful pub & staff. Please visit if you have not done so you wont be dissapointed.
albert finney - 11 Aug 2004 15:52
food is great- atmosphere is very nice. Manager is a complete nightmare--That is unfortunate because the place has all the key ingredients for complete success. Would happily frequent once management is replaced.
jan - 6 Apr 2004 15:07
Things started well, but went rapidly downhill. Had lunch here during the week. Pleasant atmosphere. Candles lit (unusual during the afternoon, but nice). Unobtrusive classical music playing. Food very good (though they forgot to put the anchovies on the Caesar salad). After a while the music changed: to screechy jazz. We politely asked a staff member to turn it down, but he said he couldn't. When asked why, he first said it was because others in the bar might want it on. There was only one other table occupied, so we asked them. They were more than happy for it to be turned off. He still refused, then saying the Area Manager insisted on having it on! He refused to even turn it down, even though we pointed out that it was causing distress. His manner was confrontational. Had he been amenable, we would have given this place a rating of 8. Perhaps he was afraid he'd lose his job if the Area Manager dropped by.
Angie - 17 Mar 2004 16:48
What can I say food is out of this world, and one of the best wine lists i've see in a pub.... Did wait about 35 minutes for food one Sunday afternoon but the place was packed-no spare tables, the landlord informed me that after 3/4 o'clock is a much quiter time to eat - and it was....

Now my first choice for comfort food and wine by the open fire on a hung over sunday afternoon, what else do you need!

Well done!
Colm - 26 Feb 2004 15:38
Went there for lunch on Sunday. Even the customers' kids were well-behaved! The food itself was simply amazing. And we only waited about twenty minutes for food. I just love the smell of log fires on a wintry afternoon. Ten out of ten. :)
Briony - 10 Feb 2004 12:57
Having loved and frequented this pub for many years I am afraid to say that it seems to have a new manager/landlord and completely lost the plot. They were rude and refused to help out - as well as throwing my husbands birthday cards into the fire. I loved this place but will never go back!
Megan - 6 Feb 2004 15:48
Imagine a cosy old-style pub and this is it. Beer is good, food is good - specials menu is good for variety. We waited 1 hour for food but it was Boxing Day - but the food was good. No views nor beer garden of any size. Great venue forg a cosy evening with friends, or, a weekend lunch venue for food with the family.
anonymous - 8 Jan 2004 09:58
A wonderful cosy gem in the heart of Richmond Hill, the pub serves high quality fare and the atmosphere is warm, friendly and laid back. Perfect for a quiet informal dinner with friends or family.
Gaynor - 30 Dec 2003 17:40
Nice pub, food nice, sort of place you'd take your parents to.
Richard - 17 Nov 2003 12:50
The best food on the Hill. The Roebuck might have the view, but The Lass O'Richmond Hill has the greatest food - and puddings...
N Danielsson - 30 Oct 2003 09:17
Great food, great atmosphere - a real country pub in London.

Staff are fantastic!

Very warm and cosy so best suited for winter weather.
