The worst 'pub' I've ever visited. Rated accordingly. Long and dingy.
First time to Letchworth to see a friend +we stopped in here on a weekend afternoon. One of our group was in a wheelchair +had no bathroom facilities. The landlady made us feel so very unwelcome +was hostile when we asked about accessibility needs.
I agree with the recent comments- if you don't know the staff they essentially stare at you until you leave. Seemed to be an injoke between the landlady +her foul-mouthed female staff members (they were c wording every other sentence which is fine if that's your bag but there was a child in the pub) +they were clearly laughing at us.
Cannot believe this place gets any business at all! Really felt uncomfortable.
NB- the pub is filthy. Seen cleaner festival toilets. One saving grace is that it appeared to be just drinks (I darent ask otherwise).
AVOID. There must be anywhere else someone could go!

Ales generally OK but nothing special. Always feel it's a "local bar for local people".

Personnally I don't think it would be such a shame for this place to be demolished, the landlady permanently looks miserable and makes no attempt to make non-locals feel remotely welcome, great business philosophy eh...

The place is a dump it has really gone down hill the toilets have no disabled access they are dirty and often out of order they take ages to repair them. The food preparation is disgusting theres no hand washing by the staff and preparation and serving is done on the same surface. Their is no food hygiene certificates for any of the staff on display !!!! the storage of the food is by the fruit machine and bought from Morrison's down the road. It you want to see a real well run clean pub with good food then you need to walk about two minutes down the road to the GLOBE

I pop into The Arena Tavern now and again as it is pretty consistant. It does not try to be anything other than a basic pub and there is certainly nothing fancy about it. I have never had a problem with the service and feel comfortable drinking in here either as part of a group or alone.

Not sure as to when or indeed 'if' the Tavern will get knocked down. It would be a real shame if that happens as I know it's a big hit for Letchworthians like myself.

I'm completely aware that this pub has been home for many a good night and also very popular with regular pub-go'ers but I've never actually had a good experience in there.

Personally, I find the staff rude and snooty like a lot of the locals. Please don't get me wrong, i'm aware it's a good pub to have in Letchworth because of it's alternative lifestyle and refreshing difference, but my friends and I have been banned thrice by the most difficult of landladies (for doing absolutely nothing - just sitting near something which may have happened to warrant someone getting barred) who seems to have a terrifying hold over the punters. Whenever I go in there I get the same looks as you'd get if you were to walk into a random house on Christmas day and urinate all over the tree and presents.

There is also a lot of hostility conveyed by the regulars if you seem to be a stranger to the place. I lived at the back of the pub for about two years and never got a 'hello' or 'goodbye' when I walked in/out of there. Honestly, most of the customers in there look like they've just got off the train from Brighton after walking through a hemp and tie-die market, buying everything in sight. You'd think they'd be nice and friendly. Are they bollocks.

Anyway, apart from my main view/rant, it is a good little spot to have the pub and would be a real shame if it was knocked down.

Can anyone confirm whether the Tavern will be knocked down to make way for the improvements? My understanding was that the improvements were going to centre around 'The Wynd' area of the town centre, which would leave the pub untouched.

Visited here after the Letchworth beer fesival closed its doors. Its an OK pub with run of the mill ales. Its small and dark. A better choice if you are already in town and fancy a pint rather than going to one of the large chain pubs around.

Good beer, but very small and smokey especially on band nights when a lot of the customers might be a little less than 18!

Great pub for brewing it up, food not too great, live music used to be very eclectic but now mostly limited to dodgy emo bands, sometimes good though, and loud. Very friendly, good atmosphere, far less idiots than other pubs nearby, but going to be knocked down at some point, no doubt to be replaced by some souless theme pub.

Best pub in Letchworth by a distance, very welcoming good mix of people, be a crying shame when it's torn down as part of the "improvements".

I have great memories of nights out in this pub when I was a teenager, and although I rarely go here since moving out of Letchworth when I do its always a good night. The best pub in Letchworth Town Centre, friendly staff and regulars.

Great pub, really friendly staff, live bands on Thursday night which is the only place in Letchworth if you prefer a bit of rock music instead of dance.

Oh and its not full of chavs!!!

Most popular nights Thur-Sat get in early as it fills up by 10!
