Gastro-do to death.

Was one of the grungiest and most revolting boozers In town when I were a lad. Made you glad to be alive.

Wouldn’t touch it nowadays though. Not a single long haired geek throwing beer at you when you walk in. Where’s the fun gone?

Can’t even mark it. No longer a real pub so 1/10

had a great meal in here with family,

was sick over the table but everyone was so nice

Agree with some of the comments here, seems that its a over priced pub grub type place with no real atmosphere, unless there is a band the sun shines etc. Overpriced, overated, not a pub IMHO.

Don't be fooled by the pub sign and the sign that says this building belongs to "Chelmer Pubs". This is not a pub and if you have the audacity to treat it as such & go in just for a drink, expect to be banished to the draughty marquee attached to the side, with the gawdy, soft red lighting, as were when asked where we could sit. Unless the one table available to non-diners is free
Tried the Guinness and the Old Golden Hen and both were awful
A snippet of all that is wrong with pubs in this day and age

Re-Opened.

Been a couple of times .Refurshed to a very high standard. If you expecting it to be anything close to the old Bay Horse then you will be very surprised. Its clearly now a gastro pub and less a drinking establishment (like it was well known for before) obviously a lot of money has been spent renovating and updating and it works well. Food was great too, there were 16 of us and everyone enjoyed their dishes. Staff were professional and friendly. Food was very reasonable priced (15 for 2 courses) great selection of wines too. There is also a very nice outdoor decking area now too. The strangest thing about this pub is the Fruit Machine that is still there next to the bar area, which look and feels out of place!

Weird place this - full of rockers and old school bikers and goths but I just weirdly love it. Despite all the people who look like they have walked out of an Iggy Pop gig circa 1989 it has a great atmosphere and if you get bored you can always count the body piercings on display. Have never seen any trouble here although the other week early on a Saturday night the bouncer would not let me enter by the side door and I had to go through the front which was weird as there was about ten people in there. overall though, excellent!

I was kicked out of here over 10 years ago for filling a novelty water pistol (Squirty Bird) full of stale bitter and sparying a few barmaids. They generously allowed me to finish my pint before going and therefore earned my greatest undying respect. Good crowd, old decor, only a short walk from the institution that is Mr Ram's Kebabs.

Reasonable pub to listen to a bit of rock/goth, cheap (if poor) beer, and some entertainment in the form of daily druggy rows.

Nice pub just outside of the town centre. decent drink prices, and a jukebox full of rock music.

Not a bad place for a drink, the building has a lot of character, and the atmosphere is generally good. In Summertime you can sit outside and chill in the beer 'Garden' but....

Stay away from the food...

Excellent pub for the rock/alternative/student crowd. Cheap drinks but well kept. Building has character. Absolutely superb jukebox set loud enough to hear properly. Apparently hosts live bands too. Good friendly crowd. Bar staff very helpful and quick.

Was there for halloween, good music, ok priced drinks compared to other places out in essex.
pool table was a good way to make the night fly by.
might go back if i am ever in chelmsford and bored.

its pretty obvious that the people who have posted have only ever been there once. Its not run by 'lezzas' and they got a new chef so get it right

This pub is an ideal place to go for locals and people who are into Hard rock 'n' roll. It now has a pool table which has attracted a lot of people. Specailly on a friday. Great pub i like it!

The pub is unusual of decor, but not bad for a cheap lunch and an expensive beer. Excellent support from some of the locals for live music, but the manager (Jay Bentos) is not one of the best!
P.S. Mouldy baps are not just on the menu!!!!!
Arthur Askey - 7 Apr 2004 19:54
The Bay Horse may not be to everyones taste, but they do support local music. Each month there is a jam night which encourages local acts to perform, recently there have been some great acts, although it is still hit and miss its worth perservering for some gunine musical talant.

It's not a bad pub, but watch out for the food. I had a burger there and when it tasted a bit funny, I turned the bun over and found that it was mouldy!. I took it back and complained and they said "oh sorry, i'll get you another one!!!" No thanks love!
Matt Rawlingson - 22 Jan 2004 03:10
It's Ok, the offensive fella has gone and is now run by a couple of lezza's! Top tunes, and the place has been redecorated to black, rock/goths and alternatives only!! Happy days!!!!
Wom - 28 Nov 2003 16:19
THE BAR MANAGER IS RUDE AND INTOLLARABLE AND THE PUB IS GOING DOWN HILL FAST.

This pub is very friendly and has a good atmosphere and it's got tasty but cheap bar food. They even have giant jenga and connect 4 on mondays, what more could you want!! Good jukebox selection with mostly alternative tunes.
