user reviews of the Hammersmith Ram, Hammersmith

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Yes, I agree, Baronloft! I popped in yesterday afternoon to see what a mess they might have created- & I wasn't 'disappointed'! Hideous, ghastly, rubbish etc don't begin to do justice to it? I just went into the loo before risking asking for a pint, having clocked all the appalling 'improvements'; went to the bar to register my disappointment; yet, by then, didn't have the 'courage' to ask how much the beer had gone up! I expect Special is about £4.50 now? The only upside was that the gents' loo door had been oiled, apparently, so didn't squeak & creak so much, & was a bit more easy to open! Sad, sad, sad...Bring back The Builders, in which I used to drink in the 80s! Also, it is shameless of Young's not to credit on the pumpclips that their beers are now being brewed by Wells? Neither Special nor Ordinary is a patch on what I was brought up on from the 70s 'til recently.

Obviously re-decorated by the same 12 year old that has destroyed The Tabard !

Baronloft - 22 Sep 2016 16:15
The Ram is closed for refurbishment for 2/3 weeks more, I believe!
renzarov - 27 Aug 2016 10:59
My husband and I had a meal here last week. Never again! 2 out of 3 advertised ales my husband wanted were "off". The wine selection was mediocre and my white wine was not chilled. The menu was unimaginative but nevertheless the food was ok. The staff were disinterested and seemed more interested in gossiping behind the bar than serving the customers. However, the most off putting aspect of this pub is the poor attention to cleanliness and hygiene, especially in the toilets, which were very dirty and smelly.
Thames11 - 17 May 2016 17:10
£4.85 for rubbish Winter Warmer...
renzarov - 12 Jan 2016 11:50
Decent enough Youngs pub without being anything special, well kept beer but £4.05 for a pint of Youngs Blond ale? Seems a bit steep to me.
beershot - 2 Jun 2015 17:40
To avoid bloating up with beer at the forthcoming Kate Bush concert, I went for a red wine. Please dont revoke my BITE membership. It was a first offence. Suspicions raised when one bar man told the other to use the other bottle. Suspicions further aroused when Charged 6.95. All aleviated on imbiming... It was delicious.
Mappiman - 7 Sep 2014 19:33
Returned here after 3 years away, to find it has gone downhill. Staff indifferent, and several ales unavailable. Menu homogenised - the usual fish and chips/burger/pasta range. very much in need of a paint job.
artieleblanc - 22 Sep 2013 15:36
I was sent a free pint voucher for my birthday (Weds 3 July), so took advantage, & went down from Ruislip to the pub in mid-afternoon. The staff were excellent, as was my Hake fish pie (£5 lunch special). I've been drinking there for about 35 years- it used to be The Builders!-, but have not eaten before. This has to have been the happiest couple of hours, 2.45-4.45ish, that I can remember for a long time! :-)
renzarov - 6 Jul 2013 10:30
Best pub I've been in to in ages..Good food, great music session, lovely guiness
mont62y - 17 Mar 2013 13:41
seemed an okay pub when we visited recently. obviously must have visited on a good day going by the previous reviews. beer was fine and staff polite.
ng10 - 9 Aug 2012 15:11
My wife and I went to this pub in the evening of 1st Aug, what a mistake we made! They had a music night (if you can call it music) we ordered food and it was was undercooked, the bar staff were not interested when we complained, they were more interested in drinking shots from the stock behind the bar (unless it was there own stock) and yes the staff was drunk, where was the manager?

We will never go back to this pub again, do not recommend it to anyone.
LondonTrav2 - 8 Aug 2012 14:53
Messy Youngs pub, which seems inexplicably popular. As a former local, I could never understand the appeal of this place.

Poor selection of drinks, disinterested staff, unwelcoming seating arrangements, and nothing to really make this pub stand out at all apart from a break from High Street shopping perhaps.

elegiac_stanzas - 7 Aug 2012 12:27
Manager phoned to say our table booking, from weeks before had been cancelled, "because they shouldn't have let us book a table on St Patrick's day" whilst the website still had "book your spot to get the best views ...of the rugby" on it. Confusing at best and the late notice forced the cancellation of a friends meet up. This is now a boycott pub for me.
bozjones - 18 Mar 2012 10:41
Friendly service, really nice pub, definitely one to visit.
kevj - 25 Feb 2012 14:52
Cracking pub - went for a pre-Apollo gig drink and meal last night. Very friendly staff, and food not your ordinary pub fare - the venison pie was very rich!
I'm guessing the background music is themed around whoever is on at the Apollo - last night was largely Mark Knopfler and Bob Dylan.
Will definitely be going back.
turbohorsebox - 20 Nov 2011 21:29
Really nice pub and the staff are very good. Food is very nice and the selection of drinks is good. It's popular whatever the time of day and extends back a lot more than you'd think looking at it from King Street. Well worth a visit for a few drinks.
W_Lucy - 23 Oct 2011 18:54
Warmly welcoming staff who treat customers as human beings. Enjoyed our drinks. Didn't eat, but will return as the menu looked good. Well done!
artieleblanc - 25 Sep 2011 19:41
First pub on the crawl due to bad planning and tube engineering works meaning we had to do the crawl in reverse order.. Actually turned out to be pretty good. Food was excellent and good portion size and reasonably priced. Friendly enough staff. Next pub on our list (should you want to follow us) is the Hope and Anchor

R.Swipe - 16 Jul 2011 16:59
Nice pub. Good range of beers. Best pub on King Street.
Had good memories from the place when it was the Builders Arms.
papamike - 30 Jun 2011 19:39
My only gripe about this otherwise decent establishment, would be one or two of the inebriated "friendly" locals. Especially mr "hey man, hey dude" fellow who insists on sidling up to you and alternating between being insulting and ingratiating. His friend insists he's had a hard life, which is fair enough but this is not a branch of the samaritans.

Lively pub, good staff.
E1_Norton - 7 Jan 2011 12:45
My parner and I spent new years eve in this pub and what a night we had! Rory and his team were perfect hosts and the free food/buffet was delicious. The free glass of bubbley at midnight was much appreciated. We were made to feel welcome and we could see Rory going round the pub making sure that everyone was having fun. We live in Barnes but I think that The Ram is going to be our 'local' in future. Well done all of you.
ddawnyy - 1 Jan 2011 11:11
Was there on Saturday. Excellent staff, helpful and polite. Good vibe, nice clientle. Food looked god but we did not eat. Recommend highly.
bozjones - 7 Nov 2010 18:12
Nice decor & atmosphere. Service is shockingly bad, beer & food good quality but very expensive.
Stoned_Moses - 6 Feb 2010 16:58
Decent enough pub which is quite nice inside. It has a small area at the back in which you can sit outside, though I wouldn't call it a garden exactly. If you want a good drink and you can't be bothered to walk more than a couple of minutes from Hammersmith Station then this is a good place to head.
C.B - 24 Sep 2009 16:57
Lever is correct. Two staff, one was talking to the only other person at the bar, while the other was serving him. We stood for fully two minutes before walking out, and it was only then that they tried to serve us. Got my own back though; used their toilet for a poo one day and didn't buy a drink.
fulhambob - 25 May 2009 23:56
A very friendly and comfortable pub with good Youngs on offer. One of the better establishments in the area.

Will certainly go again.
willesden_seadog - 9 Mar 2009 19:56
Apart from the barmaid who didn't understand who's next at a quiet time, this is a cracking little pub after the ale-less establishment we'd stumbled upon just down the road. Stepping out of a cold, polluted city street into this place was just bliss on a dark winter night.

The Young's Bitter and the Young's Winter Warmer were excellent but the Special was not so good.

This place is definitely on the list for any pre-Hammersmith Odeon (Apollo) nights out.
Lever - 26 Nov 2008 20:05
Some of the best Youngs in London here. First pint I ever had was in here aged 13 and, 13 years later, it's one of my favourite locals. Youngs and Pride both excellent, decent wine, occasional gig sessions and professional staff who sometimes border on being friendly. Outside area for smokers has tables, chairs and heaters. A real winter pub and a complete mix of locals.
willale - 16 Oct 2008 22:53
Without doubt one of the best pubs in Hammersmith, although this really isn't saying very much. The rustic interior is pleasantly soothing, the staff are friendly and, being a Young's establishment, the beer is excellent. I often escape to here in my lunch break and it always does the trick.
kestrel - 22 Sep 2008 22:04
Excellent pub. Obviously very popular, when we visited there was a (well attended) quiz night soon to start at the back and some Hash House Harriers setting off from the front. The Special was good and I was told by the brother-in-law that the Ordinary was well up to scratch as well. The staff were extremely attentive - all-in-all we had a very good evening.
Trequites - 29 Aug 2008 21:32
Still good and not really changed since the day they knocked down the division between the front and back bars and made it all one. As others have said one of the few decent pubs around here.
rainlight - 29 Apr 2008 12:33
Really nice comfortable and friendly youngs pub, had a really great tasting pint of winter warmer here last week, 8/10
fat_beer_badger - 16 Mar 2008 17:01
Me and my mate went to the Hammersmith ram last night it a really nice place.

Andy23 - 15 Mar 2008 18:06
I had a few pints in the Ram on the Thursday before Good Friday and it was surprisingly quiet, especially as Hammersmith seemed quite busy.
I hadnt been to the Ram for about 7 years, but it was as I remembered it and is still one of the few pubs in Hammersmith that I do not have to be dragged into kicking and screaming.

If you are unfortunate enough to find yourself gasping for a beer in Hammersmith you should check out the Ram, or better still get on a bus and go somewhere else!
Strongers - 11 Apr 2007 18:13
Just what you would expect from a Youngs town-centre pub - nothing too exciting, but a well-maintained establishment with reasonable beer...
rpadam - 13 Dec 2006 22:59
Nice bar, good beer, great staff. One of maybe 3 decent Hammersmith bars.Give it a go.
MavicChen - 12 Nov 2006 19:38
A great pub with lovely, friendly staff. It could do with better ventilation as there's a thick smokey haze across the place by six o'clock on a Friday, but other than that, it's a nice pub.
shdn - 11 Nov 2006 15:57
great place for men with beards
fulhambob - 10 Nov 2006 12:32
Not bad, but used to be better. Good ale mostly (result of Young's merger and change of landlord). Good, troublefree pub with a nice mix of clientele. A place for friends to meet, eat and drink. Drinks a tad more expensive, presumably to deter the Wetherpoons drunks.
redmond - 15 Aug 2006 16:11
This is the best pub on King's Street, but frankly what's the competition?

The beer is fine, the pubs reasonably clean and tidy, and the food was okay the one time I tried it.

If for some reason you're shopping on Kings Street (the Primark being its sole attraction) and you fancy a pint try this place.
Sparky1 - 25 Jul 2006 12:01
A favourite of many norwegians in London. Superb food, clean, and a manager who can be both strict and forgiving. The bunch from Elverum will return!
Norwegian - 3 Jun 2006 03:21
A good selection of youngs real ales and well kept. Nice food, had the homemade steak and kidney pie, my friend had the sausage and mash. Would recommend. Good freindly service and a very clean pub. Check it out.
Realaleforum - 10 Mar 2006 13:31
thys is best pub in london
manager is ................amazing
staff is the best
sebastian_B - 9 Mar 2006 18:34
This is with out a doubt the best pub i have been in on King street.
anonymous - 3 Mar 2006 10:51
I agree whole-heartedly with marius, best pub I have been to in Hammersmith (I have only recently moved there). Now we are in a so-called 24 hr drinking society, decided to check out pubs open past 11pm after a night out in the city. William Morris was shut, the chavvy place opposite was open but some chav thug wanted to 'end me' in the toilets so left before I died laughing.

Walking home, saw the Ram was open & went in. Warm, relaxing atmosphere. It's open to 12 every day but the landlord told me they have a license until 1 Fri & Sat with live music occasionally.

Will be checking this out again.
BeerGuru - 12 Dec 2005 16:12
Great friendly bar with superb service. The beer is just right and,as has already been stated, compared with the majority of Hammersmith bars,a little oasis. 10/10 for helping to keep Hammersmith from sinking into chavsville altogether.
mariusmaxtible - 29 Nov 2005 18:35
I agree with comments from Mr Raffles. Not Much to choose from in Hammersmith with most of it being real rubbish. This is a nice pub with good beer. Average age 35+ and no chavs. Will go again
anonymous - 24 Nov 2005 21:31
After many yesrs of avoiding this pub (believing it to be another in the almost unbroken run of shit Hammersmith bars) I finaly went in on Saturday. A great surprise. The cider was fantastic, the staff were beyond efficient and the general atmosphere was more than pleasent. Along with The Salutation, this pub gives a glimmer of hope to the dissilusioned residents of Hammersmith.10/10.
Mr.Raffles - 14 Nov 2005 16:47
If you dont like blues music then dont go in this pub. Went in this pub a few weeks ago and it was packed from wall to wall, i have never seen so many people in this pub, but it was great. some fantastic live music. The landlord even went round giving out sandwiches. A nice change. Beer still to expensive
Realaleforum - 21 Oct 2005 21:46
Nice Little Pub, with great beer. I think the previous comments are a bit harsh but each to their own hey ! Proberbly the best pub on king street along with the salutation.
anonymous - 20 Oct 2005 14:51
I dropped in here for some food before heading to the Apollo and I'm afraid it was the worst pub food I have had in a long time. 4.50 for a jacket potato that came served on several large lumps of lettuce core. The sandwich with dry tortillas and more lettuce lumps was pretty awful too. I most certainly wouldn't recommend eating here but otherwise it seemed like a nice place.
anonymous - 20 Sep 2005 16:24
A word of advice don't eat in the Ram.....5 for a chicken burger, made with a small, reformulated chicken piece that would not look out of place in the frozen value section of Asda. This is served with a generous portion of old salad with these dodgy huge genetically modified tomatoes and onions which lack taste. The chicken fillet is tiny and served in a huge bun...all of this tastes awful....the chips are extra!

I have eaten at the Ram on three occasions now....that's it no more.....I'll be popping into Benjy's (next door)....next time I'm looking for a lunchtime bite to eat. On each visit to the Ram the food has been off poor quality....I shan't be eating in the Ram again!
anonymous - 16 Sep 2005 14:37
Some great blues duos.
oak_cliff - 26 Aug 2005 14:17
I thought some of the comments about the staff were a bit harsh. From what I have seen, the staff here work fairly long shifts, carrying crates of drink, continually serving customers (many of which can be difficult or rude), are always friendly, welcoming and polite, and have very few opportunities to rest, as they are always doing their best to ensure that there are sufficient bottles of drink, clean glasses and that customers are served ASAP. Whilst I have to confess the music may not always be to my taste, I find the drink and food to of good quality and reasonably priced, and the staff are always pleasant and professional. The pub has a relaxing atmosphere, which is just what you need after a hard weeks work. As for my rating of this pub, different music could get them a 10.
anonymous - 14 May 2005 15:38
Great stop off before going up to the Carling Apalling(sorry Apollo ?)...
W980501 - 15 Apr 2005 11:21
Nice change since the last time i was in this pub, although the beer is a little overpriced, but then thats a youngs pub for you. The surroundings seem much fresher and the staff very freindly. Good place for a quite chat with freinds unless its a live music night. If you want cheap drinks, fighting, vomit and a quick shag then go to wetherspoons.
Realaleforum - 30 Mar 2005 18:58
Decent, pleasant, quiet and reasonably priced. If you want a good chat with a group of mates, without being disturbed by dickheads and slags, this pub's ideal.

A good place for business meetings or just a quiet drink with a group. Shame the beer garden isn't bigger.
CheekyShepherd - 29 Mar 2005 00:14
Hey live music is back!!!Good foot tapping atmosphere. All should check it out!!!
anonymous - 16 Feb 2005 14:00
This used to be one of the great Hammersmith pubs. Not any more, its really hit the sawdust. It has all the atmosphere of a tram shed without the trams. When it was called the Builders is was full of locals and characters with a separate saloon and public bar. There was terrific homely food and a lovely Labrador dog that hoovered up any food that got to the floor.

There is so little trade that the bar staff are bored witless and have to be broken from their huddles to get served. If you leave your drink its whisked away in seconds. The Morris down the road has taken all the customers away. Its time for some special offers and a decent pub dog and anything to keep the staff from going senile. Youngs brewery can surely do better than this. Any compensation - the beer is still good.
Watcher - 2 Feb 2005 16:29
Nice pub, good choice real ale served well.bar staff always cleaning the tables, nice atmosphere.
jono194 - 14 Jan 2005 15:39
Good real ale range. Attentive staff, checking the beer quality. Ordered a sandwich, which was nice but I thought a little too pricey. Nice atmosphere. Staff keep tables clear and clean. Definately worth seeking out, handy for gigs at the Apollo.
Simon - 21 Oct 2004 14:07
I second Chris's comments - If you want a crappy bar, go to Edwards - This is a pub, and not a bad little one at that.
TheGP - 21 Sep 2004 13:52
Been there a couple of time. Friendly place and excellent beer.
Leslie - 21 Sep 2004 10:23
That's because it's a pub, not a 'bar'. At least it sells decent beer (Youngs in this case. If it isn't your scene, don't go there. I shall, though.
beeronaut - 21 Aug 2004 09:02
I agree with the anonymous comment below its overloaded with elderly people and children out when they should be home it is slightly overpriced personally I think there are nicer bars in hammersmith that you can go to?
Molly - 21 Dec 2003 15:29
its full of old dudes and 12 year olds
anonymous - 11 Dec 2003 16:15
Pricey! With no just cause. But I like it becuase it's got those Hogarthian style cartoons on the wall which on reading them seem to make no sence at all.
Good for: Getting pissed with a friend, again a Sunday night be best.

thenationofjames - 5 Dec 2003 14:23
Returned for a visit after a couple of years absence (don't live in West London anymore). Pub still pretty good with reasonably-kept beers. Food is good and there is a non-smoking area at the back. Staff seem a little unfamiliar with the tills but maybe they are new.
Graham - 1 Dec 2003 11:06
Nice pub but I got fed up of spending an entire evening asking for my short pints to be made into full ones.
EricB - 24 Oct 2003 11:42
does the job- v comfy pub, good staff. if you need ouside air there are tables in an alley at the side.
millym - 26 Jul 2003 21:04
Nice boozer, better than the grim Wetherspoon up the road. Costly, but does good Young's beers.
Darryl - 18 May 2003 01:14
Traditional pub.Offering a combination of trad and contemp food.A must for Real Ale drinkers. An eclectic mix of the population at large.
Happy Person - 13 Jan 2003 20:28
