Popped in for lunch this afternoon thinking it would be as good as when Lynn and Russell were running it. Unfortunately not, things have changed. Ordered a couple of drinks and lunch, when my lunch arrived it looked okay but when I started to eat my sausage and onion sandwich it was stone cold and served with cold chips. After two mouthfuls I brought this to the attention of the landlord who promptly took it away, I didn't ask for a replacement. When it came to settling the bill I said I wasn't prepared to pay for the cold food that I hadn't eaten. The first response of the landlord was 'I am calling the police' which I said I would be quite happy with. After a while he presented me with a bill £10 for a jacket potato and £3 for two flat soft drinks. Needless to say I just paid and was then told not to come back! Not the way to treat a local who has been using the pub for 40 years - we have no intention of going back or recommending it to anyone we know. Not sure where the Christmas spirit was but definitely not in the Rose & Crown, very disappointing attitude.

Popped in here today to see how the new landlord shapes up. He seems like a very pleasant bloke & his staff were friendly. I had a delicious Sunday roast & a couple of pints & shall be returning in the very near future.

A really lovely country pub with a good range of beautifully kept Real Ale and superb home cooked food which is run by a landlady who really understands the traditional values of an English pub.
I found the Men's toilets and washing facilities spotless and my wife reported that she had never been in a better appointed Ladies.
Important details but often found lacking in other Pubs.
Despite the fact that I live 5 miles away, I have made the Rose and Crown, Upper Farringdon as my adoptive local and I cannot give it a better recommendation than this

Lovely pub in a quiet village; you'd never find it if you didn't know it was there. Garden out back with a few tables and seating inside for food. I've been here a few times; not yet had any food but I here It's quite good.
Only let down by the soft drinks from the snake being £4 per pint. This of course procludes bringing any kids or designated drivers. I guess the target audience is: ale drinkers, living in Upper Farringdon who don't have any kids.

Lovely rural pub with something for everybody. As I only went for the beer I can't say more about the food than that it looked and smelled great, but I can tell you that the beer was great. A couple from Tripple fff (Moondance and Pressed Rat), the obligatory Doom Bar (what does anyone see in this bland brown rubbish except a nice name?), Goddards Fuggle Dee Dum and Thwaites Lancaster Bomber, which was great to see so far South. All were in lovely condition (except the Doom, which I didn't try because, even in perfect condition, it is almost devoid of character) and it's obvious that they care here.
It's worth searching out.

Nice little pub, some well kept local beer with 4 engines on,some of the usual culprits,Alton,Hogs & Ringwood all in good condition.
Trying to push the food just a bit too much......are you eating are the words at the bar & are you gasping for beer......both a little too OTT, for me..at midday Sat.
No bar snacks, full meals...only.
Nice garden, well kept, didn't eat here, just too pushey and although the bar area is cosy the dining area is dated and too formal for a rural pub.!

Lovely Pub in Upper Farringdon, have real ales FFF range, sataff very friendly had a lunchtime meal. I selected the lunchtime offer very nice the chips were soggy! Too pricy for lunchtime, cheaper to go to the deals they have in Alton town. Will go again

Excellent pub.

Nice area to eat and a nice bar as well, food and beer were very good.
What I liked most was how friendly the service was.

Well worth going out of your way to visit

We went on Saturday on the local bus tour from Alton, a very warm reception from the land lady and her staff, the pub looked very well looked after and a lovely homely feel to it. excellent variety of local beers and superb food. Definitley Hampshire's best kept secret! we will certainly be back.

Found this pub from the Good Beer Guide. The entry was well deserved. We received a very friendly welcome from the landlady and the two staff on duty. On the food side there was a good selection of light snacks - we enjoyed a couple of freshly prepared baguettes. The beer quality was excellent - I enjoyed Triple fff Alton's Pride. The pub has a pleasant garden. Highly recommended.

Several years since I dined at this pub. A nice looking pub that hasn't changed much but is under different ownership. First thing waitress told us was that the there was only one chicken kiev left on the specials, and this was at 7.15. Ordered wine and the rump steak. The young waitress brought the wine but there was no offer of tasting. The bottle was left on table and not poured. The steak arrived. Good points being very hot plates and an excellent steak cooked medium rare as ordered. But.... the chips, described as home made, looked like badly cooked oven chips. They were soggy and probably the worst I have ever tasted - my local chippy does much, much better. Also on the plate was one tomato and one mushroom plus a few onion rings. 14.50 and very poor value. Still feeling hungry opted for the Farringdon cheesecake. Asked waitress if it came with cream or ice cream. She replied 'I am not sure but I don't think so'. I enquired if it would cost more for a scoop of ice cream and she replied Not sure but it probably would'. Anyway the (5) cheesecake turned up in a ramekin. Totally overpriced. Compared with similar pubs the food is overpriced and not what I would call good value for money. I shall not be returning.

visited a few times now, beer always in excellent condition and the place has had a much needed over haul in last few months, although not particularly now inkeeping with its location with somewhat random sways of cloth and novelties. Landlady very friendly but wont take criticism, be prepared to wait a long time if you are disappointed as we were with our meal.

Excellent pub. Great big open fire and a load of well kept ales. Alton Pride was superb. Extremely warm welcome from the landlord/lady. Would recommend it unreservedly.

Impressed by the menu that is ever changing, all local stuff and beautifully prepared and presented. I went for the Rack of Lamb. We organised a great evening there on Saturday and they did us proud. Its getting very popular but the atmosphere is really great. Definitely the best pub around Alton area.

Very friendly pub, tucked away from the main road masses. Beer excellent condition - tried Courage Best for the first time in years, Bowmans Swift, TEA, and London Pride. Food also excellent. Will be back to work through the menu. May have to walk over to justify the food and beer.

A very good pub, with helpful friendly staff.
I went there for the jazz (on the last Monday of the month). It was a great evening of interesting tunes from the Riverside Jazz Band.

Found it in the Good Beer guide, we tried a few of the real ales...Lovely all of them! Very cozy welcoming place. Food was brilliant, great menu we settled for a really good bowl of homemade soup, and local sausages and mash and red onion and port chutney... amazing. Couldnt fault it. A great pub. Village is very "chocolate box" and quiet surrounded by beautiful countryside. We walked to Jane Austens house after lunch.

Great evening out with friends. Food was fabulous, try the Cod in homemade beer batter, but you have to be very hungry it was enormous. sgt majors apple pie and custard, real winter specials. Staff are very friendly nothing too much trouble. We stayed B&B and walked off dinner the next day.

Had the best Sunday roasts EVER in a pub! 10/10. A perfect way to spend a cold Sunday afternoon by the fire, (and they have the sunday papers). Essential to book, we only just got a table. It seems the whole world knows about this place, even though its a nightmare to find. Very reasonably priced, very friendly efficient staff. Great selection of Ales, we tried them all! Will be back in the summer as the garden has fabulous views.

Had heard about this place numerous times and decided to take some friends for dinner,,,, we were not dissapointed! A lovely atmosphere, fabulous food and great staff. The ales were perfect and the wine list extensive. Dont tell too many people though, we want to keep this one a secret!

If your looking for a lovely country/village pub with food that is above the average, this is it!
Not a single chav or oik to be seen, to spoil the atmosphere. Staff are all very friendly and good selection of beers (local and further afield)
This is a hidden gem of a pub.
Lovely garden in the summer, and live Jazz and bands now and then.
