user reviews of No.1 Kew Road, Richmond

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

I'm not sure what made me finish off an evening in Richmond here last night. But I did and my fellow drinking partner and I consumed an Aspalls cider each! Pride was the real ale. A private party was in full swing in the upstairs bar, whilst the downstairs bar was fairly quiet. Not recommended.
blue_scrumpy - 4 Apr 2016 20:42
Doesn't get any better. Drinkers were packed in upstairs this time, with diners downstairs. Doom Bar was the only ale. Drinks were pricy. Convenient for the station and as a meeting place. But has very little else going for it. Wouldn't have bothered, if I wasn't meeting people.
blue_scrumpy - 7 May 2014 20:06
Went here for a family get-together, which was just as well because it meant we didn't mind the shockingly slow service too much because it gave us a chance to chat. The staff were pleasant although they tried to say we had a reservation for drinks, not to eat (does anyone or anywhere want reservations for drinks?) but eventually accommodated us upstairs which was much less noisy than the ground floor. The food was OK but there are plenty of places around that do better. Wont't be going back.

Unfortunately, we always seem to end up having our work Christmas do in Richmond. Last year this place was called the Bull and we popped in for a while. It was nothing special then. This year it is now imaginatively called One Kew Road and we ended up having lunch here and then spending the rest of the evening here. During the day, it's primarily an eating place. But during the evening, it gets much busier with office workers in suits flooding in. Didn't think much of the attitude of the bar manager. Although some of the other staff were pleasant. 2 ales were on - Ubu & Pride. Aspalls is the cider. Not a place I would return to unless I'm coerced. I wonder what it will be called this time next year.
blue_scrumpy - 18 Dec 2011 13:30
Now appears to be closed, not sure if its re-opening or not. No great loss either way!

This is truly an awful dump. Being close to the station, I have popped in once or twice over the years after getting off a train. Other than at weekends there is never more than half a dozen customers, and yet it always takes 5 or 10 minutes to get served. Often there is nobody behind the bar at all - the staff seem to like hiding in the kitchen whenever possible.

When you can get served the tap lager is undrinkable. Either they buy in cheap past it's sell by date stuff or they never clean the pipes (probably both).

Friday and Saturday night is a no go. It has always been a meat market and I did go there in my younger years, but I wouldn't go near it now. Very young clientele and a fair number of punchy little chavs who think they are "gangstas". Ridiculously agressive bouncers (I have been pushed around when I was walking past the place with no intention of going in). Walk past it after 10.00 pm and it looks like a scene from a documentary about broken Britain - couples shouting at each other, girls puking up their WKDs, little gobsh*tes in baseball caps threatening to shoot each other.

Saddest thing is they have the cheek to put up signs alluding the the place's past as a live venue (the Stones used to play here and they still had bands and comedy on up to the early 90s).

The fact that places like the Red Lion get so much hassle from the council, and yet places like this remain open is a travesty.
dingdangdo - 23 Feb 2011 11:21
I knew The Bull when it was Edwards and went back a couple of times recently. When it was Ed's it did exactly what you thought it would, provide cheapish drinks, half decent music and a fight at the end of the night with a chance of a brief encounter. I went a few months ago on a friday when it was the bull i found the place was a little better, music was great and dj was friendly and gave shout outs, beer was ok and we generally had a good time. Then we went back on a friday a week ago and it seems that the place has gone down hill very fast, stroppy bouncers, chessy crap music and a miserable feeling to the place. The bar staff look generally harrassed and unpleasant, seems there is no management of the crowd or staff. We used to throw a bit of cash across the bar before, will be avoiding now at all costs, what has happened to this place??!! If you are going out in Richmond avoid it at all costs, unless you like attitude and crap music.....
generallyhappy - 23 Dec 2008 19:48
awful
markinuk - 14 May 2008 12:20
I take it you like the place then caja!!!!!!
giveusabeer - 23 Mar 2008 09:25
The bouncerd think they can be complete dicks and get away with it..... if you want a decent evening don't visit this place...........
caja - 23 Mar 2008 02:44
BAD place don't go there
caja - 23 Mar 2008 02:42
CRAP don't visit

caja - 23 Mar 2008 02:42
ITS SHIT
caja - 23 Mar 2008 02:41
DON'T GO THERE
caja - 23 Mar 2008 02:30
REALLY RUDE BOUNCERS THAT ARE JUST UN-EASONABLE...... DON'T GO THERE... EVER
caja - 23 Mar 2008 02:27
bad bad place
caja - 23 Mar 2008 02:24
This pub, now called The Bull is the worst establishment I have ever visited. Just not worth going to, rude staff and not a pleasanr atmosphere.
caja - 23 Mar 2008 02:23
This is the worst pub ever. I used to occasionally put up with the shit service and crappy decor because it was the only place you could get a cheap drink but the other day they served me a jack daniels and coke without any coke in it. When I complained they said there was probably too much coke but that was my problem for not asking for only a little bit. However I dont need to ask anywhere else and to my knowledge a normal jack daniels and coke should actually taste a bit like jack daniels. The manager was incredibly rude about it and said it wasn't his problem if my tastebuds had changed. I won't go back again.
kll - 12 Jan 2008 17:58
Not sure why everyone is so negative... since it's been The Bull I've found it much better, I work about 100 yards away from there and it's GREAT value for lunch and after work stuff. Every time I've been there later in the evenings I have found no problems with the "chav crowd" that allegedly exists. The decor is a little crazy but not offensive and there are nice compfy sofas too :)
kindatheartuk - 7 Jan 2008 12:10
Went there on a wet Monday and the place was empty. No real ale so had to drink Amstel. Decor dark and dull.
Matthew_of_Ham - 24 Jul 2007 17:05
The kind of place that's fun if you're really drunk, but you have to be very very drunk to enjoy it
blink - 24 Jul 2007 12:32
now called the bull and been given a coat of paint inside. thought i would try out last saturday to see if it had changed from the scum hole that was edwards. but no its a "new name, same crowd" full of chavs from the sh*t towns around richmond and plastic gangsters from the ghettos posing and on the look out for girls. Police did two routine patrols inside when i was there. Some say it should be closed but Its good in a way because all the scum go to this bar leaving all the other places in richmond for the normal people. Just try and avoid walking past at clsoing time as there allways trouble.
kmannj - 21 Jul 2007 12:38
Hurrah! It's now been rebranded as "The Bull" and is a different concept inside, kind of like The Bear in Twickenham. Hopefully they'll get better door staff, bar staff and clientele now...
I_Love_Rugby - 7 Jul 2007 09:55
ive only been here a couple of times and didnt think it was THAT bad until my last visit on friday...my boyfriend and me and a few friends went there and spent the best part of 400 , only to be asked to leave for absolutely no reason!!!! my mate and her boyfriend were manhandled out the pub and when the police got involved as they were passing, the bouncers couldnt and wouldnt give an explanation as to why we were asked to leave....COZ THERE WAS NO REASON, THATS WHY!!!! we wont be taking our custom there again as we feel both the bouncers and the staff reckon themselves and have serious attitude problems towards customers..
maxibubs - 13 May 2007 13:08
awful place. full of 'kids' and and there was me thinking this was richmond and I pay alot to live somewhere nice- obviously wrong if this place is anything to go by!! Rude female bouncers, far too much of the 'attitude', god knows why?!! full of kids sharing drinks rather this could be a place where adults go and spend rather alot more. Police van permanently outside now seems to stop the fights at closing....well...almost. Edwards ruins Richmond, but then if you dont mind going for a boogie, its the only place down that end (unless O'Neils?), just hold onto your wallets, phones, handbags (my mates bag was stolen and my phone) and if you dont mind being groped by a 12 year old- have a ball!!!
anonymous - 16 Apr 2007 21:11
LOL at some of the comments poster! Yes this place aint great we all know. You do get silly people looking for trouble in here, it can get stupidly rammed packed so getting to the bar is a nightmare. But its free to get into, you can have a good dance on its tiny dance floor and you can always chill out upstairs if downstairs gets to you. Avoid if you dont like crowds of youngsters and worried you might get into bother!
MystiKaL - 16 Apr 2007 16:40
Just read all the postings and thought them to be really funny!!!
I worked at Edward's for about 10 months in 2003 and i didn't think it was that bad but by the sounds of things they have gone to shit very quickly. Thats what happens when i leave the country!!! ;)
Might have to drop in next time im in london.
anonymous - 13 Apr 2007 05:57
bouncers a complete nightmare, I work in Richmond and live here too and dont expect this sort of place here. Used to be an adults place didnt it??....funny..more like a youth club!! AVOID AT ALL COSTS !!! Unless you want your coat/wallet/bag stolen, get into a fight, get barred for no reason, get groped by a teenager.......but I cant imagine you do!
anonymous - 30 Mar 2007 16:03
A bit poor really, useful as a meeting point during the daytime, but the pub's got way too high opinion of itself. You simply cannot charge those prices for what is, effectively, the station waiting room.

Of the two venues near the station, I'd reccomend O'Neills. At least they don't pretend to be anything other than a boozer.
ye73812 - 24 Nov 2006 21:06
Great if youre a girl!

..not so good if you are her boyfriend. My girlfriend got chatted up twice times by two men of the lowest and most unchallenging intellect - whilst I twiddled my thumbs (they were much bigger than me). Another Richmond venue that is O.K during daylight hours but one that can attract trouble after dark. I catch a bus at the stop over the road and I always wonder how many fights will break out at closing. Police who cruise past the station operate the 'turn a blind eye' policy for the drunk gangs on the street so maybe its the same for Edwards regulars.

But don't let me put you off, 'very successful business women' come here don't you know? And there are 'so many different people':
ones from the football terraces, ones from the building site, ones with England football shirts.... you'd be 'pathetic' and 'sour and pathetic' to make judgements about the place. As long as you accept that it is an Edwards; hell, you can forgive it anything! Just ask Algis100:

"it's an Edwards so what do you expect.."

anonymous - 3 Aug 2006 19:05
This pub makes me angry. Full of the "ASBO" generation oiks from Feltham, out to get bladdered and have a ruck hoping that the so called posh surroundings will rub off on them and lend a bit of "class" to their miserable little existences. Best avoided at all costs.
Bebber - 3 Aug 2006 18:24
Pretty lame place, but then thats to be expected I guess. A friend of mine had their jacket stolen there too...maybe there is a conspiracy afoot...
slacker - 5 Jun 2006 13:53
never had any problems here but have never had a good time either really! my mate got his coat stolen here tho!
Nialljm - 30 May 2006 00:25
Yes it's cheesy, yes it's full of p*ssed teenagers and sexual predators, yes the music is of a very dubious quality and the dancefloor can get sticky. But it's an Edwards so what do you expect...
The doorstaff have to be commended as the politest on the planet however and the fact that it's opposite O'Niells raises it several notches in desirability when it would normally be languishing where all the other Edwards in the world languish, i.e. crappy pick-up joints.
Regardless of your personal success in the world of business, you could have a good time here, you could have a bad time here. The closer you are to 16 though, the higher the probability of the former.
In general, average.
algis100 - 26 May 2006 10:28
i think for anyone to label people as a whole in a place full of so many different people is pathetic and judgemental not that this has anything to do with it but i'm a very succsessful business woman and for you to label me as one of these pikey chavs is quite comical. its what you make of the evening, your not ment to sit back and judge the place if its that bad were glad you won't be coming back in there. i myself think its a nice place to have a drink have a dance and meet new people, and miserable people like half the people on this website giving it a bad name take your custom else where i.e back home because quite frankly your comments and sour and pathetic.
lightenup - 26 May 2006 09:34
jane, i ive just read your comment and i DON'T know what your talking about!!! i was there all weekend with my girlfriend and all the customers were really nice people, i would feel more than happy to let my mrs go there with her girl mates anytime and i would'nt worry one bit if she was in edwards......WE LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!
tim1 - 10 Apr 2006 23:50
Ive just had a fab weekend in edwards, the door staff were so friendly to me and my girlfriend, they even opened the door as i walked in. the plaCE was packed with a great atmosphere and music was spot on. we had few cocktails which were really nice. even the toilets were clean and tidy, i was served really quicky by a really friendy bar maid. I totally love the place and cant wait to go next week end!!
tim1 - 10 Apr 2006 23:43
What a dump! If you want to be sexually assulted.. by a man or woman.. then this is your best bet.

TeddingtonJane - 24 Mar 2006 17:17
Went here last night, as there isn't really anywhere else to go in Richmond after 11, apart fro O'neils! Was far, far too packed. Waited nearly half an hour to be served, thanks to an ignorant, thick, slow, rude, miserable American twit of a girl behind the bar. Seriously whoever employed her needs their head testing!!
anonymous - 19 Feb 2006 18:53
I went in here a couple of months back. Was a Friday night and absolutely choca-blocka with youngsters and people who love to boogie. Was difficult to get to the bar downstairs without someone dancing in your face or groping your bum (or maybe trying to pilfer your wallet!)

Was slightly quieter upstairs and far easier to get served up there! A couple were in the corner about a hotel room away from fornicating with each other!

On the whole it's one of the best Edwards (even though I despite the franchise. It's a promiscuous pub for promiscuous people!)
CheekyShepherd - 27 Jan 2006 12:32
Right, the time has come to stand up and defend Edwardos. It may be a dump but after the introduction of the police vans outide its a happy dump.
I have NEVER experienced any trouble and ive been here a number of times in the past 6 months - although theres 2 reasons for that. 1) The late license 2) The size of the que for O'Neills

I for one will still see Edwards as a decent option on a friday night
sharpe - 19 Jan 2006 12:50
You know it's time to go home when the thought of going to Edwards for a late one enters your consciousness ! An awful dump ! How do they keep their licence ?
anonymous - 14 Dec 2005 00:04
Better than what for Gods sake ??? A blight on the town......where do the people come from ?
squatter - 15 Nov 2005 10:30
Getting better.
Aphex_twit - 10 Nov 2005 17:16
dump, full of pikey scum. Only go if you cant get in anywhere else and you want a late drink. leave at least half hour before closing to avoid the chavs comming out pissed looking for a fight
anonymous - 19 Sep 2005 20:27
Edwards exists for one single reason; to sell as much over-priced lager as possible to late-night pissheads. That's all there is. Everyone's been to clubs like this - queuing outside behind a shivering girl in silver hotpants, the surly Neanderthal bouncers smug behind the goatees on their fat faces. Inside packed to bursting in clear breach of every fire regulation known to man, the carpet sticky with drink. Later, the bright lights of throw out time and the aggressive shouting of the bouncers to drink up a bottle the staff served you 8 seconds before. Outside, several fights in the street and a van full of coppers giving chavs a last chance to avoid a night in the cells. It's a dump, and it knows it, but why would they care? It's rammed every weekend. If you're sober enough to think twice you're far too sober. Strictly for the pie-eyed.
DaveMere - 12 Aug 2005 13:41
It was recently my birthday, and I had taken my (Out of towner) friends to some lovely places in Richmond, by which they were thoroughly impressed! Unfortunately we were due to meet people in Edwards Later...I was dreading the moment I had to reveal to my friends the ugly, crass and cheep side of my home town.

They were understandably gob-smacked. We left after 3 minutes.

Im not posh/rich/up myself, but do think Edwards lowers the tone in Richmond. Even the local Student bar (The Lot) is 100 times nicer. If you want a cheep night out...go there instead, or just don't come to Richmond.
anonymous - 11 Aug 2005 16:28
went here saturday night and had a great time, other than the fact theres barely room to move on the dancefloor it was a wicked night!! but then again im probably 1 of the "pikey chavs" you all go on about! well in mine and my mates defence we go out to have a laugh and that to us is getting smashed, being loud and dancing all night and if that makes us a "pikey" or a "chav" them fine cos we have at least we know how to have a good time and aint got our heads stuck up our own arses!!!!!
TIA_MARIA.1 - 1 Aug 2005 14:20
Fake Burberry, fake gold chains, attitude. You get the picture.
MrG - 23 Jun 2005 09:20
yer man is right... hate this place....
tonyso - 21 Jun 2005 11:34
Chav, chav, chavvy-chavvy, chav, chav....

Oh my god, how does this place stay open? Their solution to a recent cracked window pane was to put a poster over the glass. Genius! The bar service is not terrible, but the general attitude of the punters is just shocking. Everyone is looking for trouble!

Full of scum, most of whom should be sterilised before they bring any further scum into the world. Probably conceived in the bathrooms here!
I_Love_Rugby - 21 Jun 2005 11:05
Avoid if you would like to remain human. My friend was thrown out(alledgely she was given 4 warnings but I was with her must and have missed them, all of them)with no explantion and excessive force. She was pushed by the female bouncer through everyone, without a reason.
anonymous - 30 May 2005 00:34
good night if ur close to being paralletic n don't know any better!
Not keen on the bouncers refused one of my mates entry with a driving license... isn't worth the hassle! Now i know where all the rude boys n slut whores r on fridays!
Camrur - 24 Mar 2005 18:32
Burberry heaven! It's totally Chavtastic. In the same league as a Yates's bar. I think you get the picture...
pinot - 24 Feb 2005 17:44
Not so great...just another Edwards..with more of the types you'll get at a normal Edwards. The music is depressingly bad. I used to go here when i was younger (probably one of the girls the earlier posting by lsd was talking about). Its only good if you are that young frankly and cant get in anywhere else. Boys seem to be checked for id more than girls...surprisingly!
amumd - 10 Feb 2005 15:43
Not only the female bouncer is an assault on my senses but as a woman I feel threatened every time I wonder onto the dance floor NOT only because of the amount of CHAVS that promptly offer themselves to grind around me but for the fact that if I leave my bag or drink unattended for 5 ms i may have to walk home as it all WILL get taken!!!! THE WORST PLACE I HAVE EVER BEEN BY FAR.
yasmin - 28 Jan 2005 15:47
My money and HAIR CLIP got stolen! The music and atmosphere is out of this world. Worst place I've been to in the World! Truly awful!
mia - 26 Jan 2005 08:30
Hello Ppl!

No.1 THURSDAY is NOT advertised as an RnB night actually and we have a strict music policy to go by sent from head office, if you want real RnB DON'T GO THERE coz you won't get it!

No.2 As for the chavs and co that come in, sorry but we can't stop that! it hurts me to say that but thats how it is! RICHMOND ppl stay out in Richmond and stop these ppl messing up your town!

No.3 Staff hiding in kitchen, not when i'm in there! some ppl just expect service as soon as they walk past the building, better off in old men's pubs!

anonymous - 24 Jan 2005 15:04
GREAT PUB FOR HAPPY PEOPLE ESPECIALLY ON THURSDAYS, HOWEVER IT'S ADVERTISED AS RNB NITE AND GOD KNOWS WHAT THE DJ PLAYS. THE STAFF ARE GREAT AND THE ONLY SPOIL SPOTS ARE THE YOUNGER PATRONS WHO GO BINGE DRINKING AND MESS UP THE OUTSIDE. BIG UP TO THE SECURITY, GARETH ET AL. STEVE/MANAGER - PLEASE FIND A DJ WHO PLAYS REAL RNB :-)
Dogfather - 14 Jan 2005 00:04
Truly nasty. The worst service in Richmond. On a quiet night you'll be lucky if you can even find someone to serve you (the staff all hide in the kitchen). The beer (even the lager) is regularly off. On weekend nights its full of chavs from Kingston and local posh schoolgirls looking for a bit of rough. Also has the most humourless and moronic bouncers I've come across for a long while.
lsd - 31 Dec 2004 11:32
steve the manager is a legend! from ur old side kick flash!
wonderboy - 10 Nov 2004 13:22
Are they tring to break a world record of how many people they can fit into such a small place?...I'm never going back there!
Adrian - 11 Oct 2004 09:15
When are the cops going to do somthing about the shite flowing out of this place at closing time. Pissed girls & boys fighting & spewing all over town. Clean up your act Edwards, you are the cancer that is ruining this fair town.
MJ - 26 Sep 2004 22:27
Oh dear. Horrible club-pub with more luminescent paint than a road sign print shop. Typical no trainers door policy and a vast range of techno-coloured drinks. Reasons to go: Pick up a shag. Reasons not to go: Everything else.
Zod - 16 Sep 2004 16:49
Anyone who goes into Edwards surely knows the soulless hellhole of a joint that they are entering. Basically a knocking shop, playing extremely bad music with overpriced drinks and shallow patrons.
TheGP - 10 Aug 2004 13:57
its a wicked place!!!!!!!! especially on a thursday night coz its divas night
charlotte bett - 29 Jun 2004 17:09
Thnak God that miserable looking female bouncer has gone. We come here to enjoy the weekend now to be given deathly looks by female bouncers. Management its a thumbs the place feels much more welcoming now S...... has gone!
Miranda - 3 Jun 2004 22:39
the best place in the world. have a wonderful time there for my birthday... staff were helpful and polite, and i'd go back any day
sam - 17 Dec 2003 22:52
Bull and Bush was wicked place years ago. Will even forgive Skins who nicked my lovely Harrington jacket while I was strutting my stuff on the dancefloor. I froze all the way home to Kingston that night and was furious for weeks after. Alas all good things come to an end welcome to Ikea Pub full of people wearing River Island and Top Shop uniforms.
Where's my coat? - 8 Dec 2003 16:23
Not bad for an Edwards bar although not the best London one.
Some of the staff have real attitude especially the one's originating from the southern hemisphere. If they dont approve of the english behaviour what are they doing here????
Paulina - 6 Dec 2003 15:41
Since the refurb this place has really improved I would now recommend it to anyone. Had a great night last weekend and will be there again soon.
Babs - 23 Oct 2003 11:14
Clean, bright, spacious and efficient, just like McDonalds.
So not really a place for the over-20s, but probably ideal if you want a brill evening falling off your trolley in a wiked place...
Loz - 19 May 2003 17:09
Alternative for those people who don't fancy queueing for O'neills. Expensive for drinks but that never stopped me getting off my trolley!?
Taz - 17 Sep 2002 13:13
