please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Agree with montie49... decent enough pub aimed at family dining... He's also spot on regarding outside seating, which is pretty non existent in St ives. Front of the Sloop or plastic glasses on the beach best bet... Back to the Lifeboat though; great views and the actual lifeboat launched whilst we were there... The full range of St.Austell ales, including Hicks (HSD) which you don't always see..

Didn't mind it in here really.

The pub is very pleasant inside and geared up for food in a big way.

Location is of course great but like nearly all the pubs in St. Ives it rather frustratingly lacks any outside seating.

7/10

Family pub with emphasis on food and catering for larger groups, Can get very busy at peak times during the year. Food is nothing special. Beer selection is reasonable.

Good late night pint of Tribute tonight and even better covers set from "High Voltage"!

Very dissapointed, aslisted as children and dog friendly,
however last Sunday, was rudely kicked out by a rude female for bringing our fully Trained Pub Dog, into the premises.

Suggest that you update your website details and train your staff in the art of good manners

You are giving pubs a bad name, never mind your paymasters.

Great pub, great staff, great entertainment and fantastic food! Even when really busy the staff are helpful in finding you a table. Watched the match manu v chelsea on halloween there. Missing that man with the great smile :)

Large pub with 4 well kept cask ales. Staff very friendly and knowledgeable.

not a "bad pub" but the beer does not seem as well kept as other local pubs, more of a family pub with an emphasis on food, we didnt try the food but the fish pie looked massive and very tasty, so id guess more of a family food pub than a pub for the ale enthusiast, quite noisy with erm, larger drinking types, big TV screens and make sure the bar staff know you are the next in line to be served, when we went two larger swilling pigs decided to push in, and despite my protests the bar staff did not have the spine to serve me first.

I really don't see why some people bother to give an opinion on a place that clearly isn't specifically aimed at them. This pub is very obviously predominantly a place for families throughout the day with good food and good beer. If you dont want to see kids in a pub then why not find another one to sit in? There would probably be some fault to be picked there as well I don't doubt!
I am a regular visitor to st Ives and I have two children of primary school age. We look fowards to visiting this pub everytime we are in the town, because the staff are always very efficient and helpful, the food is always to a good standard, the st austell beers are always very well kept, our children never present a problem and the views top it all off.
I have also been to St ives on a stag night with my friends and found myself spending an evening in this pub (child free) dancing to a very, very good ska covers band. The staff had managed to transform the pub atmosphere from 'family friendly' to 'night time adult hotspot' seemlessly, to the point that it would have been easy to think I was in a different bar altogether.
My favourite part of this pub is the many lazy sunday afternoons I have spent there with familly and friends watching the football. It's the only place in town to have real sky with real english commentary. That with a good carvery and a pint is me sorted for the day!
I can't really think of a bad thing to say about this place, it ticks all the boxes for me!!

Had a pint of Proper Job which was fine. The food was okay. The interior was covered with large screen TV's which I'm not a fan of. I agree with the last comment regarding kids - a child was screaming its bloody lungs out when we visited (one lunchtime). Why are kids allowed in pubs??? More a family orientated venue and a noisy one at that.
Jonnysaint - 28 Nov 2010 09:28
Long time ago we enjoyed an excellent band here with many pints of Proper Job to cool the ears. Last visit found it to be occupied by pushchairs, burger & chips, a smell of stale cooking oil and nappies (and no drinkable ale) Music advertised was Sat night karaoke. Sad.

A good sized pub overlooking the bay, and appropriately named as its just a couple of doors down from the lifeboat station. The interior was all a bit of a mismatch, with the ceiling being part painted and part wood panelling which seems so popular in these parts, the walls a mixture of (more) wood panelling in various colours, painted plaster and exposed brickwork and the floors being partly wood (yet again) and partly some late tiles. There was a pool table as soon as you get in, and a few plasmas dotted around, although usefully these were relaying live images of the band on a recent visit.

The band in question were a decent heavy metal act called Sinpusher with a full on drum kit and a vocalist that reminded me (visually) of Ian Gillan. Very impressive, although whether this is par for the course, or due to the St. Ives festival that was on this week Im not sure.

Beers on tap were all from the St. Austells stable, with their Tribute, Proper Job, Tinners and a very pleasant HSD, even if they did elect to serve it through a sparkler (I thought that was what happened up north?). Ciders were Cornish Rattler, and, unusually in these parts, Blackthorn.

if st ives had a wetherspoons then this is it, cheap food (both quality and price) other reviews are right - its full of kids! Loads of staff propping the bar up chatting. Beer pretty good but not very "atmospheric" - awsome views. Has band nights on Friday and Saturday which draw a crowd. If they didnt rely on refrying frozen food then this could be a much better place.
londonsteve - 21 Apr 2010 16:57
good looking place. a bit on the pricey side for drinks though, cheaper pubs in town. child frendly, better than sloop for kids
staceybeerlover - 17 Feb 2010 14:48
I found the many brightly chalked blackboards somewhat distracting. But the Tribute was excellent and the location is exceptional. Beer in hand, through the window, on incoming tide, a seal looking into the bar. Bar staff friendly enough but not really engaging...so the seal went round to Porthwidden

rubbish food
Foodiefood - 24 Oct 2009 14:38
went in twice in recent stay in st ives had a good pint of hsd on the first time (my friend who worked for a short while in st ives 35 years ago) was talking to one of the bar staff about going in the pub all those ago and the young barman spent 20 mins talking about it is now and st ives in genral
forestwood - 15 Oct 2009 15:05
I used to like it but now its a creche
Went in this week and it smelled of puke. Why do people take their kids to a pub when they are just babies
THEY SHOULD BE ASHAMED BUT ARE TOO THICK TO CARE!!!!!!
adamisboozingasusual - 26 Sep 2009 22:20
I agree with pretty much everything RogerB says. Cavernous, largely charmless and vaguely spoons like in feel, The Lifeboat plays on its location to the nth degree.

Beer quality was rather erratic during our visit: A watery, flat pint of Tribute contrasting with a decent pint of HSD (if a little cold).

As a plus, the young male barstaff were friendly and efficient and very tolerant of large family groups. However, even as a parent visiting with my two daughters I was aware that the noise and bustle might be too much for some.

A convenient, functional pit-stop whilst on the front, but not a place to linger.

This characterless harbourside seems to have sold its soul in the name of tourism with plenty of luring food deal boards outside but lacking any real warmth, charm or intimacy inside. The hugely expanded interior seems to have a more space, more customers approach where numbers are more important than aesthetics or comfort. Multi screen TVs come at you from all angles and the pool table is openly exposed and too much of a focal point. The whole place is just a bland, dull mismatch of dcor and furnishings with little attempt to make anything particularly attractive. On the plus side, the window seats command good views of the picturesque harbour and the 3 St Austell Ales (Trinute, HSD and IPA) were decent enough and a bit more varied than some of the other St Austell pubs I encountered on my travels. Its also a bit too family friendly for my liking with screaming kids never far away. Its position means it will always attract people but in my opinion there are far better and more charismatic pubs in the vicinity.

RogerB - 19 Mar 2009 13:56
have used this place a few and as usual with the st austel pubs beer was allways well kept, i've not seen any of sharps brews on offer in there, HSD is st austels premium stregnth brew
vinnnie - 8 Oct 2008 12:34
Large sea-fronted pub. Real Ale kept in good condition. Only pub I found with Sharps' HSD on tap. TV is an intrusion. Live Music on some nights. Menu seems to be standard pub fayre - didn't eat at this venue.
normality2000 - 28 Sep 2008 16:51
Beer is OK, food is poor quality and obviously aimed at tourists. Often full of children, which may or may not be a good thing, depending on your point of view.
daveinbrum - 21 Sep 2008 20:16
A nice pint of Tribute and a smiling face welcomed us.
Didn't eat as we were in a rush. The menu looked ok. Toilets ok

cornwalltour2008 - 23 Jul 2008 15:06
From the outside, this appears to be a traditional Cornish fishermens pub, which it probably was originally, but the Lifeboat has undergone several unsympathetic extensions to create one large and somewhat claustrophobic room. That said, it is comfortable, the barstaff were friendly and the draught St. Austell beers (HSD, Proper Job and Tribute) were excellent. Although we didnt eat here, the food looked good and seemed to be being served quickly.
steve2905 - 15 Jun 2008 04:49
To be honest I wasn't expecting much from this place given past experiences of pubs in the middle of tourist traps BUT very pleased to be proved wrong. Well kept beer and very good food. Yes there is a big telly but the sound was well down and not intrusive. A band was setting up as we left but I'm not sure if it was for the afternoon or evening trade.
REVERENDBAZ - 9 Jul 2007 16:07
What a pity that since January's refurb the dreaded TV has taken the bar over. Sunday afternoon and Cahooty who were booked to play were cancelled so that footy and rugby could be shown.Full volume on the Tv competing with piped music and from where I stood very little interest in the game.I hope this isn't the shape of things to come, all the way from London hoping to see the band too. Ho hum. Beer was still good, though food finished at varying unpublicised times.
steve52 - 13 Mar 2007 11:29
like most of the st austell pubs the beer was well kept and the food was good,I'm sure there are some crap boozers in St Ives but I've yet to find one
vinnnie - 9 Feb 2007 13:26
Caught this one during a local music festival and saw two excellent bands in one day whilst enjoying a few pints of "Just the Job". Does this really come from the St Austell Brewery? Lovely beer in good condition.
One or two staff a bit uptight but Landlady and the rest very welcoming. Be interesting to see the place out of season.

Nice friendly service and comfy pub to drink in. 8/10

Spent a wonderful winter weekend in St Ives, much of it in The Lifeboat Inn. Great food, reasonable prices, excellent pint(s) of Tribute and live music on Friday nights and Sunday afternoons. Good atmosphere and friendly welcome from the gorgeous Debbie (I think) and her team. Make sure you visit it if you're in St Ives.
steve52 - 19 Jan 2006 11:21
very busy, the blonde barmaid is lovely, looks like marilyn from home and away
knackerbag - 27 Oct 2005 23:25
Lovely St austell house on the Harbourfront. Good food menu, if a little expensive. However, theview more than compensates. St Austell HSD and Tribute available and well kept as well as local 'Legless But Smiling' scrumpy from Callestick near Perrenporth.
ahscum - 30 May 2005 11:04
A nice place for a drink and a bite to eat. Has scrumpy from a local producer on handpull too!!! NICE!!! Friendly service and a lovely view over the harbour.
