The Red Lion, East Bergholt

Visited for lunch last week (having found on BITE). The pub is charming, the staff were great and the beer was well kept, with a reasonable choice of ales. The food was very good. I had a ham ploughman's. There was plenty of home cooked ham, the bread was superbly fresh, and the salad great...for about 5. Can't speak highly enough.

The Grey Horse, Sunbury on Thames

As a Friday night regular, I can only apologise to FrankDS for any apparent rudeness! I'm sure none was intended. As I recall, it was brass monkeys then, so whoever left a coat lying around was probably too cold to notice their behaviour. There is a nwe heating system (and new kitchen and other improvements..thanks to new landlords). Do come back Frank...

The Admiral Hawke, Sunbury on Thames

Let's go back then...

New themed restaurant for Sunbury

Food lovers in the village will welcome a new gastronomic experience at the Admiral Hawke. This exciting new concept is a restaurant with a pool hall theme, no doubt inspired by the cool character played by Paul Newman in The Hustler. To add to the ambience, the owners have introduced a genuine pool table to the centre of the restaurant and a cast of extras, seemingly cast-offs from Grand Theft Auto 4.

The menu is packed with pool hall themed dishes, such as rack of lamb, pot roast and cue-cumber sandwiches - or try a little English mustard on the side. Whatever you choose, you can be sure this new restaurant has balls.

The Red Lion, Shepperton

I previously posted a negative, but honest, review of the Red Lion. Went back a couple of weeks ago and hardly recognised it. It was busy, the atmosphere was very pleasant and the beer was fine. Don't know why there was such a difference, but I would definitely go back.

The Greyhound, Weston Green

Really nice, old fashioned pub. Good ales and a good laugh with the staff. Had sunday lunch the other week and it was very good. Apparently does great crab, but I took my own! Recommended

The Red Lion, Shepperton

Always a bad sign when a pub has TV on several screens all showing BBC2 for no apparent reason, with the sound out of synch. Apart from Jeremy Clarkson echoing around the bar, there was no atmosphere. Beer OK, staff indifferent. Shame, because it looks to have potential.

The White Horse, Sunbury on Thames

For the sake of clarity Canadason (who was visiting from Canada!) was referring to the Grey Horse, not the White Horse - although there is nothing wrong with the White Horse

The Admiral Hawke, Sunbury on Thames

We ate here a few times recently and the food was very good, although the eating area got a bit hot during the summer. The beer was fine and the staff friendly and efficient.

The landlord has found some great new beers from a brewery Twickenham (Twickenham Fine Ales). Twickenham Original is a really decent bitter, but there are some new ones on sale now which are worth trying - Advantage and as seaonal beer called Autumn Gold. I'm sorry a previous reviewer found the pub cliquey, I guess it could seem like that, but its really only because there is a big regular crowd who know each other. Give it a bit longer next time..

The Jubilee, Sunbury on Thames

I have to say I'm surprised at some of the negative comments. I live near to the Jubilee but don't use it regularly. But on the occassions I have been there, it has been very pleasant. I've not had a bad pint and the locals have been friendly. Good TV for Sky sports. I would say that the only thing the previous gushing review (anonymous...not written by the Governor then!) missed out was that it is 5 minutes from the beach and has an excellent view of the Grand Canyon. No, this is a decent pub.
