I first experienced 'real ale', though it wasn't called that then, at the Hand in Hand on Wimbledon Common back in the early 70s. It was a freehouse then and sold only beer (straight from the barrel - no pumps) and country wines. It didn't have a spirit licence. Youngs took it over shortly afterwards and it remained a second home for many years. I think pubs are an essential part of our social fabric and need to have decent beer, good customers and affable staff. Sadly, getting all three together seems to be becoming harder - but certainly not impossible. BITE is a welcome resource in finding the best (and avoidng the worst).

The Red Lion, East Bergholt

Visited for lunch last week (having found on BITE). The pub is charming, the staff were great and the beer was well kept, with a reasonable choice of ales. The food was very good. I had a ham ploughman's. There was plenty of home cooked ham, the bread was superbly fresh, and the salad great...for about 5. Can't speak highly enough.

The Grey Horse, Sunbury on Thames

As a Friday night regular, I can only apologise to FrankDS for any apparent rudeness! I'm sure none was intended. As I recall, it was brass monkeys then, so whoever left a coat lying around was probably too cold to notice their behaviour. There is a nwe heating system (and new kitchen and other improvements..thanks to new landlords). Do come back Frank...

The Admiral Hawke, Sunbury on Thames

Let's go back then...

New themed restaurant for Sunbury

Food lovers in the village will welcome a new gastronomic experience at the Admiral Hawke. This exciting new concept is a restaurant with a pool hall theme, no doubt inspired by the cool character played by Paul Newman in The Hustler. To add to the ambience, the owners have introduced a genuine pool table to the centre of the restaurant and a cast of extras, seemingly cast-offs from Grand Theft Auto 4.

The menu is packed with pool hall themed dishes, such as rack of lamb, pot roast and cue-cumber sandwiches - or try a little English mustard on the side. Whatever you choose, you can be sure this new restaurant has balls.
