The Greenwich Union, Greenwich

Beers still good, level of kids now reaching critical level, even on a friday or saturday evening and braying, pretentious adults can get really irritating especially if you are crammed into the smoking area at the bottom.

Not sure what all the comments about the bar staff are about, I have always found them really friendly and tbh if your dumb enough to buy a pint 5 mins before closing you deserve a rude comment when you think you can spend as long as you like drinking it AFTER they have closed, especially when there are numnerous pubs only a couple of mins down the road open till 1 or 2.

The Elusive Camel, Victoria

Rubbish, full of asshats, didnt even bother going in when I saw the pub had security on the door at 5pm!

St. George's Tavern, Victoria

Should be rubbish as it possesses all of the unholy trinity of very cheap booze, 'pub grub' and 'traditional' furnishings, but is actually a good laugh, especially downstairs.

Can be a bit of a rush at lunch as it doesnt seem to occur to them that most people in the area only have an hour for lunch and as such they should get a move on in the kitchen, but when you can get some drinks in there for over a pound cheaper than normal priced pubs I couldnt care less.

The Princess of Wales, Blackheath

Quality selection of beers, many of whic hyou wont find anywhere else in the vicinity and a pretty cool boozer overall, though it can get a bit rammed.

It is a bit pricey, but still a good laugh even if the evening can usually be relied on to be spoilt by the laziest selection of bar staff I have ever seen. Even in the afternoon when there are only a couple of people at the bar it can take upwards of ten minutes to get served as the stand around chatting to their mates.

Their workrate has to be seen to be believed and is still unbelievable when seen.

The Lost Hour, Greenwich

I've changed my mind about this place since I am now in there at least two or three times a week.

The beer is still pretty poor both in terms of selection and temperature (only bother with Grolsch or Stella) but the food has definitely improved. OK, it's junk food but it is good junk.

The regular events they run their now, like Jack's quiz on a monday night are great fun, and mean there's more to do here than sit and drink.

The new pool tables are a blessing as the balls actually run true now, whilst the permanant water feature in the gents is interesting, if rather annoying if you're wearing baggy jeans!

Also now the uni students are back most of the chavs stay away which is great.

PS I think they actually mopped the floor a couple of weeks ago so no danger of leaving your shoes behind when you go for a wander

The Guildford, Greenwich

Further to my earlier comment about the extortionate price of Stella, I was in there for a cheeky beer just before closing time a month or so ago and my mates gf asked me what I wanted. I asked for a Hoegaarden and you can imagine my embarassment when she was charged more than four pounds!!!!

Seriously it was 4.10 or something... for the Big Mac of White Beers!!!!

The sooner this place turns back into a proper boozer and does away with the smug middle class couples that populate it the better.

The Wheatsheaf, Vauxhall

Quiz is back on which is awesome and seems to be doing pretty well.

Food may have got better but the bar snacks still suck. They need to get bigger bowls for them!

The Wheatsheaf, Vauxhall

Unfortunately the pub quiz seems now to be on a hiatus of indefinite length. Here's to hoping that it will return. God knows why the new owners chose to get rid the main draw on a thursday evening!

The pub has now been re-decorated, at last!!! but now it looks just like every other pseudo gastro pub in London. That being said, the food still is pretty good, though not as good as Sandra's, but has now jumped in price so much that one has to question its value for money.

The Guildford, Greenwich

Since when is 3 a decent price for a pint of Stella when you can get six cans of the stuff for a fiver in the off license up the road?!?!

That being said, I'm glad that godawful sign has been painted over! Yay!!!

The Tap 'n' Tin, Chatham

Best pub in Chatham, the ideal counterweight to the rest of the chav filled places in around the high street. Great music and many different floors always ensures a great night. Best selection of bar snacks too that I have ever seen.

The Two Brewers, Rochester

Great pub, always go there when I come home to see my mates. Very small but space always seems to open up for a seat in no time at all. Reasonable selection of beers. A nice pub overall.

The Fine Line, Clapham

Erm... if you dont want to go to a pub packed with people on their way to a cheesy nightclub then dont go out in the middle of Clapham on the weekend. Seems obvious to me. Still a nice bar.

The Greenwich Union, Greenwich

Having been living down the road for a couple of years and coming in here regularly my opinion of this place has changed somewhat.

I'm not sure about the comments on the quality of the food. If you want restaurant quality food then dont go to a pub basically. I'm also getting tired of the tediously middle class, increasingly middle aged crowd who frequent this place. Granted they dont stay late but as this is pub is so small please dont bring your children, we who are paying for alcohol would like a seat.

On the topic of alcohol, the beers are on the whole good, the white beer is better than hoegaarden and the majoprity of white beers you would find in a pub but the IPA is one of the worst beers I have ever tasted. I have to respect them for having the balls to try to produce a mainstream ale with a high alcohol content but this is just awful, it tastes of Super Ts with a nasty alcoholic aftertaste that doesnt encourage repeat drinking. Gets you wrecked nicely though!

The Wheatsheaf, Vauxhall

The pub quiz is now a little earlier, starting at 7pm from 23rd feb NOT 8pm

The Clachaig Inn, Clachaig

Awesome pub and well worth the walk. Has the most enormous pool table I have ever seen along with a huge range of single malts and a varied selection of scottish bitters.

19 Sep 2005 18:28

St Christopher's Inn, Greenwich

This is one of the worst places in Greenwich. It is open late so occasionally needs must but it is awful. Firstly it is the only pub I know in Greenwich that charges to get in, but the police are there with resonable regularity due to the actions of certain members of the clientele.

Has a big screen TV which is better than the Auctioneer's.

19 Sep 2005 18:21

The Tiger, Denmark Hill

Rubbish. Awful traditional pub trying to cash in on the trendy bar explosion in Camberwell with a few 'cool' beers. Avoid.

19 Sep 2005 18:15

Red Star Bar, Camberwell

This used to be pretty good 5 or 6 years ago when it was basically a club and held regular garage, house and DnB nights - even if the atmosphere was a bit heavy. Unfortunately now it is just a cheesy bar playing eighties music and the like (presumably 'ironically'). There are much better places to go after 11pm than Redstar.

19 Sep 2005 18:14

Funky Munky, Camberwell

Only been in here a few times but was impressed by the music (the usual disco / soul / funk) but at least it was mixed well which made all the difference. The furniture is a bit odd and uncomfortable (my girlfriend wont go in there because of it) but I have always enjoyed myself.

19 Sep 2005 18:12

The Castle, Camberwell

One of the best bars in Camberwell. Although the music seems to be getting increasingly louder to the point where it is now impossible to hold a conversation after 9pm on a friday, this is a very nice bar to drink in, especially on a random mid week session.

The food is excellent and is prompt even when the place is busy. When it is quiet the bar staff often take your order at the table which is a good thing as there is a large range of comfy sofas throughout.

Gets busy but seems to be used by most as a post 11pm pub so it is quite easy to get a seat even around 8-8.30, or so it appears to me.

19 Sep 2005 18:10

The Fox on the Hill, Denmark Hill

This pub, though resondingly awful holds a special place in my heart as the place where everyone from the 2000 year at KCH and beyond meets up for the annual Paddy's day session. The quality of food has gone downhill, but the pub is big and generally quiet so it is a decent place to go with a large group of friends to avoid the crowds in Camberwell.

19 Sep 2005 18:06

The Grove, Camberwell Grove

Good pizzas and decent if expensive and uninspired beer. Was a favourite haunt un my uni days and the cocktails ensure a good night is had even if the place does get ridiculously busy.

19 Sep 2005 18:04

The Cube, Camberwell

I dont understand how this place makes money, there is never anyone in the bar. Was better when it was a mexican restaurant.

19 Sep 2005 18:02

The Fine Line, Clapham

Pretty good for a main stream bar. The food is very good and presented well. Being a fuller's bar you can at least get a pint of Pride in their if you dont want lager and although it gets very busy at the usual times the air conditioning is top notch so it doesnt get too uncomfortable.

19 Sep 2005 18:01

The Guildford, Greenwich

This pub is right round the corner from me and I think it is the most tedious bar I have ever been in. If you are not immediately put off by the pompous and pretentious pseudo-dictionary definition of their self-coined phrase 'Bistronomique' that hangs gaudily above the door then you are beyond help.

Dont let this immodest self-praise fool you, this is no gastropub. When I first moved into the area about two years ago the food was reasonable but has gone downhill so rapidly I would not go in their again. Just because you serve rocket in a hamburger does not make you a gastropub. The beer is a little different but no more exciting than anything served in a traditional pub and if you needed further confirmation that this is little more than a middle class Weatherspoons take a peek over the garden wall at the families enjoying the garden.

19 Sep 2005 17:57

Richard I, Greenwich

Pretty nice. Next to the Greenwich Union and as far as I could tell essentially the same but a bit bigger (and with different beers obviously).

19 Sep 2005 17:47

The North Pole, Greenwich

This pub is awful, second only to St Chris's for Chavs. This place is done up like it is a set from a third rate RnB video (complete with microscopic VIP room ffs!) The beers are alright and are different from your bog standard pub but just the same as any over priced bar round leicester square, though I have heard good things about the food. However, DO NOT order spirits in there, they gave me the most woefully short measure I had ever seen when they thought I wasnt looking!

The clientele is awful. Basically designer chavs (Think Lacoste, Chaps, etc). Last time I was in their was a woman in with one of those small little rat dogs like Paris Hilton's got - and she blended right in. I mean if that doesnt underline the type of wannabe bar this is I dont know what does.

All that having been said it is not a bad place to go and watch the football without having to put up with a crush.

19 Sep 2005 17:45

The Greenwich Union, Greenwich

Wicked pub. Can get a bit cramped when busy but serves good food and a nice range of original beers and lagers.

19 Sep 2005 17:41

The Lost Hour, Greenwich

Awful pub. OK its cheap but its cheap because the beers are rubbish. This is basically a weatherspoons that is trying to be 'hip' or 'cool'. The food is junk and has often been served to me burnt. Gets packed for the football, with students and young chavlings as it has a projection tv. Unfortunately this Projection unit is awful and hindered by the fact that the sun shines through the windows onto the screen on clear days mean you get a really washed out picture almost all the time.

Does have TVs behind the bar though which I suppose is a plus.

19 Sep 2005 17:40

Bar du Musee, Greenwich

Very nice bar, great place to go for a good session. Quite expensive and doesnt do pints so that keeps the chavs out. Havent had the food but you have to wait to sit out the back until the restaurant has finished so only really worth going to after 11pm.

19 Sep 2005 17:37

The Wheatsheaf, Vauxhall

I like this pub. It's nice and spacious so its comfortable even when pretty busy, it's got a good selection of beers, lagers and spirits and very nice homemade food on a vary regularly changing menu at pretty resonable prices. A pool table provides further diversion and two big TVs which show all the football are well placed to incure a good view for all.

The best bit about the pub is Duncan's weekly pub quiz (thursday 8pm), at which i have had more fun than at any other quiz. It's based on a bingo format, dont worry he explains the rules every week - its easy - you have a sheet with five groups of five boxes numbered 1-25 randomly. Numbers are drawn at random and you put the answer to the question in the correct numbered box. First person to fill in a group of five correctly, shout 'OI' and have them checked by Duncan wins. Ties are decided by whoever is closest to the answer in the tie break question (eg How long is the British coastline?).

This means there is always an element of luck to it even if you know all the answers so that means there are no quiz hustlers present, just people out for an enjoyable evening. Look out for specialist rounds and picture rounds (occasionally colour photocopied at no extra charge).

Please note: If you are new to the quiz please feel free to shout out 'OI' at any time especially if less than five questions have been asked. Wittier individuals may even like to try to beat Duncan to it by shouting 'OI' just as he is about to ask the first question.

Duncan's relaxed attitude means it's much more about an evening out with your friends than a serious quiz - though the questions are pretty taxing. Don't bother learning capital cities, but rudimentary knowledge of the career of Pete Doherty should see you through. Failing that, for any geography question answer with a place Duncan has lived in for a 1 in 3 chance of success, and you could walk away with over 50 and an armful of T-shirts by Kent-based designer Shepherd Neame.

Keeping with the relaxed attitude the quiz never starts at the advertised time (8.00pm) so dont worry about being late, and you get plenty of time for a nice drink which is all part of the fun. In fact, given the exponentially increasing delay each week as we, 'wait for a couple more people who are coming', current NASA research predicts the quiz scheduled for the third week of January will in fact start sometime in August 2416.
