Popped into this pub on world cup match night 7:30pm and surprised to see only 3 drinkers in watching the screens Pint of Youngs served in Traditional Glass tankard - Impressed But badly poured by inexperience staff, a quarter of the pint was head, when asked to top up, I was wrongly informed that the pint mark was to the top of the dimples !!?, asked to see the manager, who stated the same but reluctantly topped up to the full pint, left the Grove after that pint,I guess drinkers vote with their feet walked down to "The Hermits Cave" busy pub (100+drinkers)cheaper beer, more variety & served correctly by professional staff jk68 - 22 Jun 2010 10:59
Ah the Grove, what a pity. Soulless, but with nice bar staff. Drinks are alright. Place always empty. Bring back its previous studey incarnation with the great pizza oven, the BRB. They were lovely (and there's no where else in SE5 that does them that I know). It was the only pub in SE5 with a consistently good atmos which a civilised human would want to go to for a fun feeling. declan88 - 15 Feb 2009 19:36
Popped in after a visit to King's College on Wednesday for various tests, finally allowing the medico Vampire to withdraw quantities of my good British blood! Swear they must be selling it off to lesser mortals? Anyhow, thought it best to quickly restock and thought I'd wander through to the Grove; haven't been there for 30 odd years. However, firstly how sad to see the decline of a once, busy, but clean community such as Camberwell. The Green looks run down and grotty; Peckham road a slum. Believe you me Camberwell and neighbouring Peckham were once truly lovely places to live and grow up. Now just victims of scum culture that Liberal/Labour Southwark council appear to think acceptable for the future. And yet there is still some hope and areas of pleasant vistas to enjoy; Camberwell Grove! Lovely Georgian houses running upto Dog Kennel hill, that give Richmond, Hampstead & High gate a run for their money. And at the near end the Grove tavern still. As an old Wilsonian (Camberwell Grammar) this pub was the lunch time haunt of many of our masters at lunchtime & those of nearby Mary Datchelors; the former moved to Wallington in 1975 and the latter, now being transformed into executive homes I noticed. The girls at Mary Datchelors were always elegant and ladylike: and always a treat for school boy eyes. The youngest now must be middle aged? The Grove always represented those good standards of Englishness that many of us still miss. So having popped in the day after the heavy snow fall the other day, I was pleased to find a very pleasant, clean and friendly pub still. Okay the decor was in my belief, too modern for this Georgian building, and therefore in danger of dating quite quickly in the near future; it was pleasing. And typical of the brash new wave of Youngs new decor developments across our Capital city. I was served by a most pleasant and pretty young graduate girl called Rachel; and the few pints of Youngs drunk were enjoyed I must say. A pub that I would certainly recommend visiting. anonymous - 5 Feb 2009 12:58
The big letdown with this place is the little fat grey haired owner, he always seems to have a chip on his shoulder and gives the place a bad vibe. This place has a high turnover of staff (probably due to the fat controller), foods not up to much and overall does not deliver a good experience. eaststreetclown - 18 Jan 2009 14:54
