Orlandos at the Buffers, Scholes

This place has improved dramatically since becoming more of a restaurant, but still maintains the original pub feel throughout. The expansion into a previously under-used room with the addition of a number of tables helps keep the diners from the drinkers, but those who wish to can eat in the pub area as well. This pub has previously been owned by a number of landlords who have not exactly given the place a great name for itself, but the atmosphere since Orlando arrived is absolutely brilliant. Well set up to cater for smokers, a kids' play area, pool table, and good drinks on offer. I am happy to call it my local.

The Pot and Glass Inn, Durham

A nice Black Sheep pub with a carvery. The staff were very accomodating; we arrived just as the carvery was finishing, and the vegetable warmers had just been turned off, but they were turned back on again for us, and the meal was lovely, even though the carvery had probably been sitting out since it started. The beer was good, and prices weren't bad either - around 7 or 8 quid for the meal, and 2 a pint.

The Walkabout, Durham

A good bar with a huge dance area once the sport is switched off and the DJ steps up. A wide range of drinks at good prices, and cheap entry for the late night session too. Often offers student deals as well as catering for the locals. It also has a fair attempt at food, so it works both as the start and end of an evening, though probably not both at once.

The Water House, Durham

Exactly what you would expect from a Wetherspoons, ie good cheap beer, and good cheap food. The range of guest ales isn't always great and consistency is a bit of an issue, but I suppose that's why they're guest ales.

Due to its location close to the only good clubs in Durham, this is a great place to begin a Durham night out. Well worth a look in.

The Colpitts Hotel, Durham

Good pub, what you'd expect from a small Sam's house. No Sovereign (for those of you that way inclined), but the OB is good.

The locals are generally OK in there, though once one of the pub quiz questions was 'whose is this phone number?' - it turned out to be one of the couples who always propped up the bar! I don't know the real intention, but it felt to me like they were less keen on the students being in there. However, some students can be less mature than others. In each case it is the minority affecting the rest of the people, who jsut want a good, cheap pint.

It can get very smoky in the bar area, but there is a (very) snug area at the other side that tends to be less so.

The Swan and Three Cygnets, Durham

A great pub, but probably better to be outside, as it's a bit dark inside (as already mentioned). However there is plenty of seating outside (I have honestly never seen any problems with people on the tables outside), and the grassy area at the back is great in summer.

Beer is usually as expected from a Sam's house, i.e. cheap and good quality. Sometimes I think the students that work there could do with more formal training on pulling a pint properly (not a jibe at any particular bar staff, or indeed Durham students, since I am one myself!).

Overall - well situated, well priced and one of my favourite pubs.

Varsity, York

Always a good place to begin a night out in York. Expect exactly the same as a normal Varsity, but with a nice outside area. Plush seating to relax in, plenty of tables to eat food, and at reasonable prices, too.

Josephs Well Tavern, Leeds

A brilliant venue. Looks smaller on the outside than it actually is - it has an underground music venue that is almost always playing some quality live music, from local bands as well as a few bigger bands.

There is ample seating both near the bar and in separated areas away from it.

Beer is cheap and tastes good. The atmosphere in here is always good, definitely worth the walk out of town.

The Dry Dock, Leeds

Beer is average, but cheap. I have not been in on any day other than a Tuesday, but it's still the normal Scream prices on other days.

However, not your normal Scream pub, I might add...

Definitely worth a night out to see for yourself.

New Inn, Durham

A great place to drink. Drinks are fairly cheap, food is cheap, always arrives quickly and is just right. There is some outside seating, which is very helpful in summer.

It can get rather busy at times, but I have never seen it too bad. Staff are courteous.

A great place for lunchtime/afternoon drinking.

The Angel Inn, Leeds

A top quality pub, definitely worth walking round in circles for a bit trying to find it...

I have only been in on a lunchtime, and though it is uaually quite busy we have always managed to get a seat. The food here is top notch, and the OB is great (though always served in the short, fatter cylinder glasses, which is unique).

I think describing the location is a spoiler - half the fun is finding the place - and it's worth it!

The Angel and White Horse, Tadcaster

An excellent pub, has served me and friends well over the years. It has always been worth a short bus journey to get to a pub with such a good atmosphere, and at such cheap prices no Yorkshireman can resist. It's always good to point out that your favourite pub appears on the beer mat of your favourite pint, too..
