Orlandos at the Buffers, Scholes

This place has improved dramatically since becoming more of a restaurant, but still maintains the original pub feel throughout. The expansion into a previously under-used room with the addition of a number of tables helps keep the diners from the drinkers, but those who wish to can eat in the pub area as well. This pub has previously been owned by a number of landlords who have not exactly given the place a great name for itself, but the atmosphere since Orlando arrived is absolutely brilliant. Well set up to cater for smokers, a kids' play area, pool table, and good drinks on offer. I am happy to call it my local.

The Pot and Glass Inn, Durham

A nice Black Sheep pub with a carvery. The staff were very accomodating; we arrived just as the carvery was finishing, and the vegetable warmers had just been turned off, but they were turned back on again for us, and the meal was lovely, even though the carvery had probably been sitting out since it started. The beer was good, and prices weren't bad either - around 7 or 8 quid for the meal, and 2 a pint.

The Walkabout, Durham

A good bar with a huge dance area once the sport is switched off and the DJ steps up. A wide range of drinks at good prices, and cheap entry for the late night session too. Often offers student deals as well as catering for the locals. It also has a fair attempt at food, so it works both as the start and end of an evening, though probably not both at once.
