The Commercial, Herne Hill

saw this place loads when coming out of herne hill station and thought it looked cool. finally made it there and wasn't impressed. we had reserved a table and yet someone was sitting there which was embarrassing when we had to get the staff to ask them to leave. having sat down, we discovered the seats were far too low for the table and we were gonna be eating. we were moved to a corner but this was far too dimly lit. we eventually moved away ourselves again. the food was okay, but for what they're charging it should have been great. i had southern fried chicken which was dullsville. i really thought the coating would be zingy and full of flavour. far from it. thin fries were aneemic in colour and needed 10 more mins at least in the oven. very pricy gastropub-style food but for what they're charging should have been so much better. Staff very sullen. And they also adopt the serving two people at a time system at the bar which irks me. Just show one customer your full attention at any given time. Could have been so much better.

O'Neills, Sutton

only 1 member of staff serving four customers. the barman was trying to serve more than one person at one time which i think...ultimately slows things down. but there ya go. The Brooklyn Lager had previously been out ...and i was informed again that it was ..out. When I complained that was the 2nd time it has been out...i was informed it had actually been taken off the menu totally. Why still have the beer pump uncovered like it was still on the menu then? seems pointless..and getting peoples' hopes up is stupid. my friend ordered the boarburger and paid for it. then a waiter came to the table and told us that was out too. he didn't offer the 95 pence change once my friend ordered a different meal. we were later informed that they'd had very little deliveries since the bank holiday which was quite a few days ago now. the 95 pence was not offered back.. the portion sizes for the irish stew were pitifully small for £8.50. we complained about this and were told by staff this was the standardized portion and that other customers had moaned about it. The manager dealt with our complaint brilliantly and refunded one meal. She was amazingly helpful and very effective. a good end to rather an average, frustrating experience

i got charged 11.85 for 2 diet cokes and a bottle of bulmers. later i discovered they'd given me large diet cokes without me asking for them. i emailed the manager and he didn't say he was going to address this with the staff. i agree that this place is an overpriced tourist trap. beware

came here on fri 8th 2012. staff not interacting with the customers at all. just talking amongst themselves and not asking anything of the people paying their wages. food desperately overpriced. 14 for fish and chips. 12 for burger and chips. Used to be a lot cheaper. You would think in the recession that they would try a bit harder.

this pub is a rare gem in the context that it has a delightful interior with many tucked away corners and nooks. it feels like the kinda place that has still not been discovered by the soho elite, whoever they may be. the thing that lets this place down tho is the staff. attentive only to the regulars and very slow in response when waiting to be served. there is an air of aloofness and arrogance in the air and this is a great shame. Good, but could be superb

gone downhill big time. previous comments re:- lack of landlord are bang on. you can wait ages at the bar. they are always hiring new staff and the new staff are usually awful. i applied for work there myself but they refused me due to lack of experience. the food takes ages and is overpriced for what it is my friend ordered a burger. it turned out to be spicy and moroccan in style. this is not what she ordered. Seems to be a vibe of "yeah, this is going down the pan, but who cares"

this pub has really gone downhill. it takes AGES to get served at the bar nowadays. just forever. if they know you, you're fine. if like me, you're not one of the special few then bad luck. the bar staff are very rude and non-observant. i was there one day where the barman served one person, looked at me....got an empty crisp box , broke it up and then eventually decided to serve me. the beer is very expensive and sometimes seems to be more than four quid for pint of kronenbourg ! there seems to be a really bad vibe at the pub now, compared to the old days where a massive group of barstaff were only too eager to serve you. the general vibe from the staff seems to be "don't blame me, its not my fault". I watch the football on the big screen there and the commentary is never loud enough. many times, you have to ask the barstaff twice before the commentary is loud enough to hear above the general hubbub of the pub. Sometimes they have no commentary on at all until you ask for it. One day I was there and they changed the channel over in the middle of the football MATCH to the rugby without even ASKING anybody. needs attention and care. could be so much better.
