The Three Guineas, Reading

Big pub. Part of rail station. Lots of ales. Not many ale-drinkers. The newsagent inside the station sells cans...

The Alehouse, Reading

A fantastic pub. The only truly decent ale pub in Reading. Rude staff, you say? I have always found that if I'm pleasant to people they will extend the same courtesy to me. In fact, as the beers change so often (they recently had their 4000th guest beer) I rely on the advice of the staff as to what to drink. They have always been charming. And I've never had a bad pint either.

The Blue Posts, Soho

Proper London boozers are now rare. For this reason, one should enter The Blue Posts as if visiting a museum. This also alleviates the guilt associated with spending an entire afternoon quaffing Guinness.

The Free Press, Cambridge

Perfect if you are, or aspire to be, a non-smoking, non-mobile-phone-using, corduroy-wearing off-duty copper. Or Rory McGrath. Having said that, good beer and good food.

The St Radegund, Cambridge

If you've never visited this pub; don't. You'll spoil it. A magically eccentric grotto of fine booze, the St Radegund is something of a comforting constant in the pine-and-pastel pub plague sweeping the watering holes of the Western world. My only concern about the place is that its life expectancy is linked to that of Terry the landlord's liver.

The Eagle, Cambridge

Indeed a decent pub but, in my opinion, mainly on account of the building itself. I must admit I haven't visited the Eagle in some time due to my preference for smaller pubs. When/if in Cambridge centre, my personal recommendation would be to visit the St Radegund and/or the Champion Of The Thames (both on King St).
