Ship Inn, Middlestone

This is a pub as pubs were meant to be. Great atmosphere, even better beer, and the most friendly welcome you could want,

Its not a GASTRO pub or a pub that thinks its a restaurant and charges silly prices, its a PROPER pub for people who want a drink and a chat and maybe some food and want to have a relaxing time enjoying themselves,

Its a real pub. FANTASTIC

The Drunken Duck Inn, Barngates

Visited in November 2012. The beers were great if a touch expensive, especially as they are brewed on site.
The meals were the most STINGY portions I have ever had, though the quality was good. The waitress said they were starters, though the menu did not.
Otherwise the lunch menu was very limited.
They obviously cater for one time visitors prepared to be fleeced. Avoid it if you are a hungry walker looking for value. I won't go back again

Derwent Walk Inn, Ebchester

Called in May 2012. A real Jennings pub with 4 real ales, all from Jennings and those tried in good condition. Meals were quickly served, well cooked and generous. Friendy service. Not a high class restaurant, just a good pub and very popular

Bridge Inn, Grinton

Called in in November 2011 to a friendly greeting, a warm open fire and 4 great real ales. The meal was probably the best bar meal I have had, and good value.
Just as a country pub should be

The Crown, Coniston

Called in September 2011. The beer was good but limited in choice. Good range of food on offer and was quickly served and tasty. Could be the best pub in Coniston

The Sun Hotel, Coniston

Called in September 2011. The beer tried (Taglag) was great but the choice of food at lunchtime was very poor . A shame, but we left to go to the Crown for a good meal

Ye Old Elm Tree, Durham

Called in September 2011 and had two excellent pints. The York Guzzler kept its head perfectly and the Idle Dog was superb.I can't understand the comment from July unless the poster dislikes beer. Maybe I'm the below average clientele he describes, but I know a good real ale.The prices are amazing value too!

The Kirkstile Inn, Loweswater

Visited again in July 2011. Surprisingly quiet but I'm not complaining.

The beers were all great as was the food. Still keeping standards high

The Watermill Inn, Ings

I returned here in May 2011 after being impressed in the past. How it has fallen. I was served 3 beers and all had no condition and one was undrinkable. The barman thought it funny!!

If you like a good pint dont come here. They even managed to ruin the Grasmoor from Legendary Ales.

This place has gone to the dogs

Bank Tavern, Keswick

Always has the FULL range of Jennings beer always in GREAT condition, and a couple of others. A good range of food and good service . The best pub in Keswick for me, Well ahead of the overrated Dog and Gun

Bishops Mill, Durham

Lots of beer pumps but few beers.Staff got REALLY nasty when I commented on this. The must have the rudest bar staff in Durham. There are far better places in the city. Avoid this one if you want a pleasant drink.

The White Horse Inn, Kings Meaburn

Called on a Friday while the world cup was on and they were VERY busy, but still made us welcome and provided great meals quite quickly. Beers were great. Really enjoyed the visit.

The Crown Inn, Manfield

A real country pub as it should be. Real ales always great. Been to a few specials nights and food is always good and service excellent. Worth seeking out as its a bit out of the way, but one of the best for beers.

The Ridley Arms, Stannington

Real ales good but overpriced. I had to chase the barman to find where my meal was after an hour, while the place was almost empty. The chef was standing chatting. When it eventually arrived it was almost inedible and would have been sent back if I hadn't been starving. The so called garlic bread was a soggy, oily piece of bread, almost cold. Just drive past. It's awful.

The Swan, Heddon on the Wall

Called a couple of times late afternoon, July 2010. Open for meals from 12.00 onwards and real ales from Wylam brewery not cheap but well kept. Carvery veg overcooked but other food good, service pleasant and staff helpfull

The Mardale Inn, Bampton

Phoned in advance July 2010 to ask if they served lunches. When we arrived at 12.15 the place looked run down and in darkness. There was only 1 beer on the pumps and the barman told us that he wasn't open yet and was "cashing up".

He asked us to come back in twenty minutes.

We continued our walk and won't go back. This was the least hospitable place I've ever visited. They obviously don't want customers.Country pubs need help to survive but this one probably needs to close.
