Go out of your way to find this pub. It's in a perfect setting and has great beer from its own brewery. I can't comment on the food, but it looked like a popular eating, as well as drinking, stop. Roodeye - 25 Sep 2008 13:18
Quite simply the best steak and ale pie ive ever had, it also came with lots of superb gravy and at a good price too. The ale was good and the melbreak bitter reminded me of a top notch home brewed beer. Great scenery too. Tykemal - 18 Sep 2008 19:54
This review is for the 3 times that we went last spring and summer. To start I will say that the food and beer are both very good and more of a restuarant quality rather than pub food. However on every occasion that we went there was one problem or another. Firstly, why are there 2 seperate queues for food and drink. The first time we went I did not realise this as it is not obvious and having queued for 15 mins to get a drink then had to queue again for 15 min for food only to be told that the lunch menu stopped 10 mins before!?!? I have seen someone who only wanted a drink get in the wrong queue and was made to queue again. We instead ordered a snack and were sitting in front of the fire (surprised no one else had grabbed this seat) when a member of staff came over and started throwing things on the fire causing the ash to come back over our food. Our complaints were ignored. Second time, having found a table the both of us queued seperately and left our bags and coats at a neatly at our table. When we finally got served we returned to our table to find that staff members had removed our stuff to lost property and seated another couple at the table. We had no apology and the bar manager actually said we were lucky as they were going to throw our stuff out and not to leave it lying around again. Third time, this time we were with friends and were able to leave stuff at the table while we queued seperately. We just ordered a sandwiches but asked if we could order dessert afterwards, even though it would be after the lunch menu had finished - we were assured that this was fine and was what most people did. Our sandwiches took almost 1 1/2 hours to reach us. After we finished them we went up to order dessert only to find that the bar manager from our second visit was now working and that we couldn't have any dessert as it was to late - this was despite the fact that a group of 6 had ordered dessert only 15 mins before. Eventually we persuaded him to let us have dessert, the manager was constantly telling us how lucky we were - infront of lots of other customers. When I said that we would not be coming again he said that there was nowhere else nearby to go so we had no choice and that the owners would agree with him if we complained. He then followed us out saying that we were no longer welcome there. The attitude of the staff and the bar manager in particular is the worse I have ever seen and we won't ever be going back there. It was not just us that I have seen him be rude and arrogant towards but other customers as well particularly if they get in the wrong queue or want to order food and drink. I did write a letter of complaint but never heard anything back. I guess they do have a monopoly as they are the only pub for miles but they shouldn't treat people like they do. I don't know if this particular bar manager is still there. There was an article in the local paper recently that supposedly had all the staff and he wasn't in it. But I am not taking the risk. thewrongtrousers - 24 Jul 2008 14:07
Absolutely excellent place. Delectably delicious beer (mostly own-brew) and very pleasant place with fast/courteous service. Food was good when I last tried it but only had beer this time (17th July 2008). Highly recommended. wppclarke - 19 Jul 2008 22:47
