The Cricketers Inn, Westcliff on Sea

Weve visited a couple of times recently and were disappointed with the beer quality, unusual for this pub ,historically a good real ale outlet. It seems there are some new staff members there ,maybe the Manager needs to educate them !!
We didnt try out the Thai restaurant.

The Southampton Arms, Gospel Oak

Magnificent !!
We puposely visited this time at midday to get some seats,a good move.
We were greeted by friendly bar staff and an old The Rolling Stones vinyl album was playing in the background, set us up nicely for the day !!!
Beer and cider selection almost too good to be true in what is a drinking Oasis in this part of London.
I ended up sampling all the ciders, well, rude not to really !!
Ok this is very much a"what you see is what you get type pub",but the atmosphere was brilliant ,just typing this makes me want to return there right now.
This is one of my favourite pubs in the country.

The Milestone, Rochford

Picture doesnt do the pub any favours at all,its quite neat and tidy.
This pub has improved over the last year or so,and so has the beer quality,Bass now seems to be the most popular ale there.
Normally there are up to four ales available, and good value.
Live music is popular at weekends.
Worth a visit.

The Marlborough Head, Rochford

Recently visited for their beer festival, good selection,of ales but poorly attended, a cider festival to be held there in July,we will certainly attend.
However the owners have two large dogs who are allowed to wander around or sleep anywhere in this small pub, care is needed when eating, and carrying drinks.
However this is a fine old pub and on a sunny day the secluded beer garden is a good idea.

The Castle Inn, Little Wakering

Latest management seem to be doing a good job, guv'nor friendly.
Extensive food menu and decent real ales.
Very much a locals pub, busy on our last two visits, but it isnt easy to visit by public transport,a driver is required,.
Fullers London Pride is recommended there.

Golden Lion, Rochford

A while since we visited, must admit was disappointed ,the pub ,which we appreciate is 16th century building,is however in desperate need of a clean up/refurb.,as the saying goes "first impressions" !!
Beer was ok,and seems to sell well, which we guess is the main thing.

The Crooked Billet, Leigh on Sea

Has recently been awarded the local CAMRA groups pub of the year,an accolade it deserves, beer selection is always very good, and reasonably priced , normally Thornbridge Jaipur is available ,worth a visit just for that excellent ale.
Staff in the main helpful and efficient although a barmaid on our recent visit did give the impression she 'd rather be elsewhere, she could well be now, that aside if in Leigh Old Town this is a must check out pub.

Horse and Groom, Rochford

Revisted last Friday ,same comments as 6 months ago really,an unsavoury bunch there , we asked around ,it appears many of these "people" are not welcome in the surrounding pubs.We moved as far away as possible and did manage to drink some good ales in there .
We noted this pub is in the current CAMRA Good Beer Guide, hope any of CAMRA's heiracy dont chose to try this pub out on a Friday evening !!

The Golden Lion, Prittlewell

Visited Saturday, definately appears it will never open again, shame really it was a nice old pub ,think there are flats above ,so i would imagine the whole place will eventually be converted . Back in the last century good real ales were sold there.

The Spread Eagle, Prittlewell

Tried to visit on Saturday ,but the pub is currently undergoing a refurb and is shut,it certainly needed a big clean up,it was very shabby, hopefully when it reopens the real ales will also be improved.

The Rose And Crown, Rochford

Our first visit for a while, the pub has improved ,its much more tidy now,and landlady welcoming ,the two beers we drank ,Brewers Gold and Sharps Special especially were in good shape ,worth a visit.

Horse and Groom, Rochford

We visited on a friday recently ,one corner was taken over by what appeared to have been a crowd of drunken builders, lots of bad language and shouting, felt sorry for some respectable diners there, landlord seemed totally oblivious and spent most of his time outside smoking. However some decent beers served by a very pretty and friendly barmaid.

The Cricketers Inn, Westcliff on Sea

Has just reopened after a refurb, the outside now has pea green walls, very strange and the pub is now called The Cricketers Beer and Wine Warehouse.Part of the pub is now given over to an ambitious Thai Restaurant ,bearing in mind the wide selection of restaurants in this area we wish them luck.
There are now 9 handpumps and 7 were in use, the ones we tried in good shape, although expensive, there is also an extensive selection of bottled beers and ciders now.
Bar maids friendly and service good.Worth a visit.

The Borough Hotel, Southend on Sea

Friendly comfortable pub with an eclectic mix of clientele, best beer pub on the seafront, definately underrated,on our recent visit Courage Best ,Skinners Cornish Knocker and Theakstons Old Peculiar all in good shape, landlady clearly doing a fine job.Well worth a visit. Incidentally also an excellent juke box if thats your thing.

The Victory Inn, Ashingdon

Visited recently, popular locals pub ,management seems to be changing, probably a good thing as pub is popular for its food but the place is dirty and toilets terrible, needs a refurb, however the three cask ales were fine although rather expensive.

The Last Post, Southend on Sea

Use this place quite regularly and it appears the current management have things under control now,bar service has improved and staff are polite and friendly ,although sometimes in the evenings the place is busy and a wait to be served has to anticipated.Has won SE Essex CAMRA best improved pub award this year.Held an excellent beer festival recently ,all ales in good shape.I have visited many "Spoons" pubs around the country and would recommend this one .

Golden Lion, Rochford

Good unspoilt pub ,currently CAMRA pub of the year apparently, beer in good condition although unremarkable,on our visit during the day we had to wait to get served whilst barmaid finished her cigarette outside, however we intend to visit again.

The Cider Bar, Newton Abbot

Visited last week,WOW what a place , a cyder haven, selection of cyders mind blowing, spoilt for choice , particularly enjoyed Suicider, and Sams Medium, had to purchase some take aways. Staff knowledgable and friendly towards both visitors and locals. We will be back .

Horse and Groom, Rochford

Nice pub ,excellent choice of real ales in top condition, some very rare to the area, we are told the cellarman orders the beers,he is to be commended. Previous comments re the landlord, yes he does come over as a little miserable.

26 Oct 2011 11:55

The Front Bar, Falmouth

Popped into The Front last week whilst on holiday in Cornwall,a brilliant pub, excellent choice of cyders and ales and at reasonable prices ,staff were friendly and knowlegable ,thoroughly deserves the CAMRA awards its received.
Possibly one of the best pubs i have ever visited.

26 Oct 2011 09:57

The Blue Boar Hotel, Maldon

Visited this excellent historic pub yesterday evening, the gravity Farmers beers were on top form, and reasonably priced,i can fully understand why this pub wins many awards especially from CAMRA.
Just one critisism ,the pub dog appears to dislike all customers especially those who have their own dogs with them, this needs to be addressed,we left earlier than planned.
