The Peacock, Tower Hill

Last Pub of the night, but what a find, shame we never crawled the other way.

This place certainly ticks all my boxes. Lovely, humorous staff, topped off with a gorgeous little Aussie girly. All fully capable of communicating in English and serving with the minimum of fuss, and a smile, despite the late hour. Seems it opens later than anywhere for miles. Even staff from other pubs where coming here after theyd closed, now that is a good sign.

Beer to die for, and yes JohnBonser, you really dont see Ringwood much around here, not Bath Gem, which as a Guest was only 2.70. The Landlord has apparently just received his notification for the 2010 GBG too. Though he was initially missing, when he did appear, with his charming girlfriend, he made a point of warmly greeting locals and visitors alike. Being a real ale fan, I watched as he converted some foreign tourists to ale, allowing them to sample each in turn, explaining where they come from and what made them different. It was a pleasure to watch.

To summarise, this is a great place and Id hazard, not only for a late drink (could kick myself for not going earlier). Top Landlord (and Lady), excellent staff and service, even to the unknown and undoubtedly the best pint(s) we had drank all night. It was worth missing the train how for, but they even took time to ensure we avoided the scamming taxis outside and arranged a proper licensed mini cab for us.

11/10 for all their efforts. It was a pleasure to drink there.

Hennessys, Tower Hill

This could be so much better. It seems to wander along thinking it has a right to take money for being there. It is a lovely building, inside and out, with the exception of the gents. The owner seems to have spent money on the fixtures, sadly, the same cannot be said of the staff, who are worse than useless if your face isnt known. There again, given the way they kept their beer, I guess they have nothing to be proud of. Bordering on the worst pub in the area and given the amount of bad places we visited, thats saying something!

The Cheshire Cheese, Tower Hill

Mixed feeling having read the previous reviews. All in all though, just passable beer, dirty, and I won't even go on about the toilets. I consider the Inspectors comments only slightly harsh. I doubt I'll visit again.

The Ship, Tower Hill

Lovely, though tiny place with a great atmosphere, shame about the cleanliness. The Manageress is a little star though, and I did find out about the ties. Apparently theyre a charity thing; customers have donated (mugged for, so one said, smiling) the ties and it appears they will be sold off for donations, Her favourite tie, should you choose to purchase it, will come complete with a photo of her, wearing just that, nothing else. Lovely idea, though itd be nicer with a much younger barmaid. But great to see proper pubs still thrive in the City. A great pint too.

Ye Three Lords, Aldgate

Tiny little place that doesnt take much to looked busy. Staff I fear are there to be looked at and as decoration are useful, but thats where it ends. The Youngs was undrinkable on my visit,. A lovely place that could do with someone sensible running it, instead of the fat, goby, drunken madam who seems to be in charge. I didnt see the lecherous Landlord, but can certainly believe he exists happily in these surroundings.

The Still and Star, Aldgate

I have to agree with Quinno. Totally underwhelmed by this place. Dingy, dirty, with beers that are standard and barely passable. The staff seem a waste of time too. I suspect it had got such a high score due to the staff or management logging on (Disco comments of 19 Jul bear this out).

All in all, Id have a half if waiting for a bus, but certainly wouldnt go out of my way.
