The Prince of Wales, Caversham

A proper pub and a good cross-section of punters. Young, old, male, female and even a great fat, sweaty, Reading fan who looked like Penfold. There was even a man wearing wellies. Beer was good. You know it's a quality pub when an older chap feels comfortable taking his dogs in.

Alto Lounge, Reading

If you like a pint filled with strange white Debris then the Alto Lounge is your place. The three of us all enjoyed the challenge of trying to scoop out the unidentified sludge (it was in the bitter and the lager) and it made for excellent conversation. There was great speculation about what the white bits were but the barman was confident it wouldn't kill us if we drank it.
When we switched to bottled beer we were disappointed that our conversation turned to more mundane subjects.
I am going back but am taking a sieve next time.

The Moderation, Reading

Not sure if the Moderation is a pub or the Bangkok branch of Laura Ashley. Lots of Buddhas, leopard print and orchids. Some nice sensitive chaps were enjoying rugger whilst reading the broadsheets. Jumpers round shoulders and doing crosswords. I ordered a pint and spent half an hour being utterly baffled. I still am. Probably a great pub if you are Laurence Llewelyn Bowen.

Fox and Hounds, Caversham

Imagine enjoying a lovely cold pint of golden ale ( brewed by the landlord) on a lovely hot day.
Now imagine trying to enjoy it whilst being stared at by a bunch of lager quaffing, intimidating youths whilst being deafened by the jukebox.
I feel comfortable in any pub but I was out of my depth in the Fox and Hounds. If I was wearing a stab vest and had some pepper spray I may have savoured my drink instead of gulping it down to end the experience as quickly as possible. The great shame is the beer was absolutely first class yet the visit left a bad taste in my mouth.
I wish the landlord well but making this place desirable will take an enormous effort.
